At 39 years old Pete Rose becomes the 3rd Southern League player to reach 3000 hits(Aaron, Pinson). Rose had a nice 1977 season, hitting .320+ and is off to a great start in the first 40 games of 78. Will be interesting to see how many more seasons he has left in him.
Zack Greinke picked up his 200th victory. Zack is 35 years old. Van Mungo has the most Southern League victories 260, Greinke may be able to get there. Was shocked to see that Baton Rouge signed closer Mariano Rivera during the offseason. They already have Aroldis Chapman as their closer. They put Rivera in the setup role to start 78. One heck of a bullpen, but still rather shocking to see. |

I've seen the same thing in my 48-team random debut league. A few years ago, one team had two of the top four relievers in the league in Brad Lidge and setup guy Steve Hamilton -- so in the offseason, they signed both of the defending Reliever of the Year award winners in Tom Henke and Dick Radatz, as well as Dave Smith, Bill Caudill, and Gary Lavelle. Hamilton was coming off a season with a 1.20 ERA and 0.75 WHIP, yet couldn't even make the 25-man roster.

Well, the injury bug just keeps finding Willie Horton. He didn't make it till June in 1978 and this time he will miss 6 months.

Shoot, that is horrible news about Willie. Pre-Fidrych, Willie and Aurelio were certainly two of my favorite Tigers too. And I always loved Gates Brown. But that might have been just because his name fascinated me as a kid. Oh, and Mickey Stanley. But that's probably a bias I have towards great fielding, light hitting outfielders. And a bit later LeFlore. Soft spot for speedsters too! Plus LeVar Burton playing him in the T.V. movie helped. A favorite portraying another favorite. And you know, then Tram and Whitaker. Etc. etc. The Detroit Tigers certainly helped me survive childhood, even when they weren't very good. |

So I did end up expanding the Southern League prior to the 1979 season. Added two team to raise the number of teams to 14. League now has 2 seven team divisions, divided into North and South. Division winners and 2 wildcards make post season. 162 game schedule. Teams face the teams in their division 20 times. Face out of division teams 6 times.
The two expansion teams are the Little Rock Diamonds and the Pensacola Rattlers. |

June 1980. Well, Pete Rose just reached 3400 hits. He needs just 10 more hits to become the all-time hits leader, passing Hank Aaron. Pete is also inching his way towards his 600th career double. Pete is 41, so based on real life, I'm guessing he has maybe 3 season left in him.
Zack Greinke now has 240 wins. This puts him second on the all-time wins list, behind only Van Mungo, 260. Last edited by David Watts; 11-05-2018 at 11:23 AM. |

Call me the commissioner from hell. As noted above, I decided to expand my league prior to the 1979 Southern League season. Well, I wanted the expansion teams to struggle in the beginning and take some time to become competitive. So, I let the existing teams protect 30 players prior to the expansion draft. Ugh! I'm thinking that may have been too many.
Late August of 1980 and the Pensacola Rattlers are sitting at 22-100. Can't remember their record in their inaugural 1979 season, but it was awful. Thinking maybe I should have only allowed teams to protect 20-25 players. Ugh! The other expansion team, the Little Rock Diamonds are a more respectable 40-82. As can only be expected, the wildcard teams are going to come from the Southern League South division. 20 games against the Rattlers is like Christmas come early. |

Well, they should get some high draft choices for a few years.
