June 18th, 1877 - Cincinnati Reds Bankrupt - Disband

June 18th, 1877 - The Cincinnati Reds announced today that they are out of cash and are disbanding. The Reds are 9-5 and just 3 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Stockings. Chicago wasted no time following the announcement, and immediately signed former Reds players Charley Jones and Jimmy Hallinan. League size is now even smaller with only 5 teams remaining. Charley Jones adds to an already stacked White Stockings team of all stars, and it seems that they are bound for a second straight pennant.

July 1st, 1877 Standings

July 1st, 1877 - Cincinnati survived their stretch of games without Charley Jones, winning 4 of 6. Meanwhile, Jones didn't play a single game for Chicago, as there were no games on the schedule. Boston and Cincinnati maintain pace behind the White Stockings at 2 1/2 games back each.

July 3rd, 1877 - Newspaper Reporter Plays Second for Louisville

July 3rd, 1877 - The desperate 1 and 21 Louisville Grays showed just how desperate they actually are today. With second baseman Bill Craver unable to play due to an unspecified injury, Grays manager Jack Chapman went to the press box and asked reporter John Haldeman if he could fill in at second base. Haldeman complied and quickly put on a uniform.
Haldeman went 0 for 4 at the plate with 1 strikeout, but he did perform admirably at second base, making 5 plays without an error. It remains to be seen how Haldeman will cover his own performance at press release time.

August 1st, 1877 - Standings

August 1st, 1877 - The Chicago White Stockings Maintain a 1 game lead over the Cincinnati Reds. It's a miracle that the Reds are still in existence, and here they are vying for the pennant.

August 25th, 1877 - Battin and Blong Banned in St. Louis!

August 25th, 1877 - Starting pitcher Joe Blong and third baseman Joe Battin of the St. Louis Brown Stockings have been banned from the National League for reports of throwing games. The pair were named by gamblers in both St. Louis and Chicago as being willing to throw a game. St. Louis has played Chicago 4 times in August, and has lost the last 3 matchups. It wasn't specified which game was thrown, but the duo will not be returning, and the National League appears to be showing zero tolerance towards throwing games.

September 1st, 1877 Standings

September 1st, 1877 - Scandals, bankruptcy and general disorder seems to have impacted more than one team this year, and the White Stockings have taken full advantage as they maintain a 4 1/2 game lead over Boston, with a magic number of 10. It's going to take a minor miracle for either Boston or Cincinnati to get back in the race.

September 27th, 1877 - Chicago White Stockings Win Second Straight Pennant

September 27th, 1877 - Without taking the field, the Chicago White Stockings clinched the National League pennant, thanks to Boston defeating Cincinnati 2 games in a row. There was certainly some doubt about the strategy of replacing Al Spalding with George Bradley, but Bradley has pitched a career year with a 1.65 ERA, and Al Spalding has batted .311 while playing first base. What a day for the city of Chicago, a city that only a few years back was engulfed in flames.

March 15th, 1878 - Season Predictions

March 15th, 1878 - Season Predictions

Boston Red Caps Boston has made two key acquisitions in the offseason, bringing in second baseman Jack Burdock (.284) from Brooklyn and right fielder Jack Manning (.313) from Cincinnati. Catcher Pop Snyder (.234) also arrives from Louisville. Boston pitcher Tommy Bond had a 2.26 ERA last season. George Wright, Ezra Sutton, and Jim O'Rourke are the 1,2 and 3 hitters, and Boston, as usual has a very competitive team and has a legitimate shot at winning the third pennant in team history.

Chicago White Stockings The White Stockings have lost several players this year, and though there are still some all-stars on the team, the second half of their lineup is quite weak. Rookie left fielder Frank Hankinson will bat cleanup. Cap Anson and Al Spalding are excellent at the plate. Starting pitcher Terry Larkin arrives from Brooklyn, where his ERA was 2.75 last season. Expect the White Stockings to have a winning record, but they have too many question marks and weaknesses to get their third pennant in a row.

Cincinnati Reds Rookie King Kelly will lead off and play third base for the Reds. Deacon White arrives from Boston to play second base. Charley Jones and Lip Pike return. Cal McVey, catcher, and Joe Gerhardt are solid additions. Billy Geer is a questionable acquisition, as he hasn't played in two years when he batted .177 for the New Haven Elm Citys. Will White pitched 55 innings for Boston last season with a 2.29 ERA. Overall, the Reds look very strong this season, and if their pitching holds up, they could be fighting Boston for the pennant.

Indianapolis Blues Right fielder John Clapp (.314) and promising rookie pitcher The Only Nolan are the two bright spots on this otherwise mediocre to abysmal new team. The Blues will struggle all season and will be fighting to stay out of the cellar.

Milwaukee Grays Like the Indianapolis Blues, the Milwaukee team has a few bright spots and prospects, but will not have a winning record this season. Rookie Abner Dalrymple (left field) may be the next sensation, and shortstop John Peters batted .326 for Chicago last season. Rookie pitcher Sam Weaver looks average at best. Rookie catcher Charlie Bennett shows some promise. Beyond that, there isn't much to see here.

Providence Grays By far, the Providence team is the best of the new franchises this year. Rookie pitcher Monte Ward features solid control with a good fastball and curveball. Lew Brown (.300) is one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Left fielder Tom York (.275) has seen his average dip two seasons in a row since his career performance of .410 in 1875, but he remains a solid veteran. Dick Higham missed last season, but he batted .386 in 1876 for Hartford. There are a few weak spots on the team for sure, but anticipate at least a third place finish for the new team from Rhode Island.

June 1st, 1878 - Standings

June 1st, 1878 - What a confused picture we have after one month of play. Milwaukee played Indianapolis 7 times in May, but they also played Cincinnati 6 times and had 1 game vs. Providence. Nonetheless, the Milwaukee Grays are the early leaders.

July 1st, 1878 Standings

July 1st, 1878 - The Milwaukee Grays have fallen to earth, and now it's the Providence Grays who have taken the lead, followed closely by Boston, Chicago, and Cincinnati. This has been a wild race so far...we'll see who emerges as the season progesses!

July 10th, 1878 - Lip Pike Released by Reds, Moves to Providence

July 10, 1878 - The Cincinnati Reds have released Lip Pike, choosing instead to go with the younger Buttercup Dickerson in left field. Pike was promptly picked up by the Providence Grays. Pike will bat cleanup and play right field for Providence. At 33 years of age, Pike is on the back end of his career, but he is still batting .285 with 3 homeruns and 23 RBI's this season.

August 1st, 1878 - Standings

August 1st, 1878 - Providence remains atop the National League, no thanks to Lip Pike. Since arriving from Cincinnati, Pike is batting .205 for the Grays. Chicago and Boston have struggled as of late, while the Milwaukee Grays are on an 8-2 run and have improved their record to .500.

August 14th, 1878 - The Only Nolan Kicked Off Blues Team

August 14th, 1878 - Despite having an excellent season on the field, Indianapolis Blues pitcher The Only Nolan has been a problem off the field this season. He missed today's game and told management that he was at a funeral. It didn't take management long to find out that he had been out drinking instead.

"It wasn't an easy decision," said manager John Clapp, "The kid has a lot of talent, but he also has a lot of maturing to do. Our locker room is better off today." Nolan will be replaced by pitcher Jim McCormick (2.16 ERA).
