Definately been a tough guy to beat in my Uni. Hopefully he has a nice decent run

I think this era was the last really great era's of boxing when fights were shown on the weekends on free TV and there were so many names and characters... there was a lot going on in the sport back then.

The other thing was, there were so many titles to go around. The good thing was, the a lot of divisions had decent depth back then which made the title unifications even more exciting. That, and good fighters couldn't be "frozen out" as they were way back when.
Thanks for the kind words Jim. This was definately my favorite Era in Boxing There were so many good fighters and fights. And I agree I used to love watching the fights on CBS and ABC. If we could only get to that place again free championship fights on broadcast tv. Really was a great time

Jr Middleweight Bouts May 86

Mihara Victorious In Germany

Tadashi Mihara (23-0-2-22) entered the Estrel Convention Center as a 2-1 underdog versus Germany's own Gerhard Piaskowy (27-1-1-14) and left as the new WBA Jr Middleweight Champion. Coming into the bout Piaskowy was the number one ranked Jr Middleweight in the world and was coming off a twelve round draw with Rocky Mosley who captured the WBC Championship earlier in the evening. Mihara was coming in off a Tech Decision over Mike Baker. Both men appeared to be in great shape. As the first round opened it didn't take long for Mihara to get going an early uppercut opened a cut under the right eye of Piaskowy. In the second Piaskowy sat down on his punches and landed some clean shots on the jaw of Mihara. The third saw both men exchange some brutal shots on the inside with neither man getting a clear advantage. Piaskowy would have his best round in the fourth and he tagged Mihara early and often causing Mihara's right eye to begin swelling. Mihara quickly got back into the fight in the fifth as a wild overhand right dropped Piaskowy on the seat of his pants for the first time in his career. Piaskowy wisely took the count of eight before rising. Piaskowy did not appear hurt as he went right back to mixing it up with Mihara. Piaskowy bounced back in the sixth and again was in control as he just seemed the quicker of the two. After six I had the bout scored 57-57. That point would become moot as Mihara came out in the seventh and landed an incredible right hook that put Piaskowy to sleep. The fans as well as Piaskowy were stunned. When asked about the outcome. Piaskowy was very humble. "He caught me with a good shot, What can I say?" Mihara was ecstatic when asked about his performance he replied "I am happy to bring Championship back to Japan" "Gerhard is tough fighter".

In the co-feature Rocky Mosley Jr. (28-0-2-3) amazingly stopped Jae-Hyung Yuh (20-1-0-16) with one punch in the ninth round. Thru four rounds the bout was very competitive Mosley and Yuh had some furious exchanges on the inside. After four I had the bout scored 39-38. In the fifth Yuh finally got to Mosley chin and hurt him badly with an uppercut. Mosley went on the defensive and survived Yuh's onslaught. Yuh would also control the sixth and seventh rounds as he was much more active then Mosley as Mosley seemed to be wearing down. Mosley came out more determined in the eighth round and stood flat footed and traded with Yuh and actually got the better of Yuh. After eight I had the bout scored 78-75. In the ninth Yuh appeared a little tired. Again both men stood and traded and again Mosley was getting the better of it and a little after 2:00 into the round Mosley fired a jab followed by a wicked straight right that caught Yuh right on the button. Yuh slumped to the canvas where he was counted out at 2:29 of the ninth round. Mosley showed some great stuff in this fight. He showed an ability to stand and trade with a slugger and the heart to dig deep when behind.

The undercaard featured some young talent in the Jr Middleweight division. Japan's Masashi Kudo (16-1-0-14) won a hard fought ten round unanimous decision over Matthew Hilton (21-2-0-16). While Mark Medal (13-1-0-9) stopped Sandy Torres (13-3-1-1) in two rounds. We also watched two newcomers Luigi Minchillo (1-0-0-0) and Kevin Howard (1-0-0-0) win four round unanimous decisions in their pro debuts.

Next Month Buster Drayton (25-1-0-14) and Jae-Do Yuh (19-0-0-9) will meet for the vacant IBF Championship. The undercard will feature Walter Gomez (20-0-0-14) versus Raymundo Torres (20-0-0-20) in a WBA Title eliminator to determine who will Tadashi Mihara in his first defense.

Middleweight Bouts May 86 First of two fight cards

Middleweight New Comers Showcased

The opening bout saw Hugo Angel Corti (0-0-1-0) battle to a four round draw against Angel Baez (0-3-1-0). In my opinion the TC Baez got jobbed. He outworked Corti from the opening bell. Scores were 39-37 Corti (Judge should be suspended), 39-37 Baez and 38-38.

The next bout featured Tony Danza (1-0-0-1) who looked very impressive in stopping Dale Gilbert (0-4-0-0) in four rounds. Gilbert visited the canvas twice before the knockout punch finished him off.

Stephon Frost (1-0-0-0) started slowly losing the first round but then proceeded to beat Whit Green(0-6-0-0) from pillar to post even scoring a knockdown in the third for a three count. Scores were 39-36 across the board.

Next up was Bernard Mays (1-0-0-0) who also won a one sided unanimous decision over Keith Hunter (1-5-0-0). Holmes visited the canvas in round number three but Mays coulkd not follow up on the injured fighter. Scores 39-36 across the board.

Scott Fraser (1-0-0-0) had little trouble boxing his way to a shutout victory over Bill Williams (0-6-1-0). Scores 40-36 all around

Finally Nate Collins (1-0-1-1) struggled to get a draw over Ed Bancroft (0-7-2-0). Bancroft fought a spirited fight pushing Collins to the limit. Scores were 39-37 Collins and 38-38 twice.

All in all a decent night of debuts with the most impressive performance being turned in by Tony Danza, Look forward to seeing him in action again.

Middleweight Bouts May 86 Fight Card II

Lee Runs KO Streak To 31!!

Don Lee (31-0-0-31) entered the ring to face Anthony Jones (29-1-0-25) for the vacant WBA Middleweight Championship and with the longest active KO Streak in the world today. The bout proved to be tougher then most expected as both men came to fight. Jones was coming in off his impressive fifth round knockout over Frank Tate back in January, while Lee was coming off a first round stoppage of Hajime Fuji in February. Some stated Lee's KO streak is overrated as he has not beaten anyone of any significance.
Well Lee went out to prove them wrong as he quickly jumped on Jones in the first and a solid right cross dropped Jones for a seven count. Jones managed to stay out of harms way for the remainder of the round. The second was a fairly even fought round as Jones himself started catching Lee with flush jabs and hooks. Jones came out in the third and rocked Lee badly with a short hook in close. Lee was forced to clinch and hang on for the remaining :30 or so of the round. Lee was back in control in the fourth as he just seemed to outwork Jones. Jones bounced back in the fifth and started landing some beautiful combos. After six rounds I had the bout scored 58-57 for Lee. Rounds seven and eight were split between the two as both men had their moments and continued to land some incredible power shots. As the eighth round closed Lee seemed to be more tired then Jones. Jones came out and had a great ninth round as again he got to Lee's chin with an explosive hook that again rocked Lee badly. Lee showed better then expected defense and survived Jones onslaught. In the tenth it was Jones who now appeared to be fatigued and Lee took full advantage as he caught Jones along the ropes with a screaming right hand right down the pipe and Jones collapsed into a heap and proceeded to be counted out at 2:01 of the tenth round. Scores were all close at the time of the stoppage. Two judges had Jones up 86-84, 86-85 and the third judge had it 85-85, While I had it scored 86-86 going into the tenth. From my point of view Lee's power seems to be legit. Only time will tell.

In the co-feature England's Tony Sibson (27-0-0-20) had little trouble dispatching America's Bobby Watts (26-1-0-14) in three rounds to capture the WBC Middleweight Championship. As the pre fight announcements were being made Watts appeared to be a little on the flabby side. The bout opened with Both men coming forward and Sibson getting the best of the inside exchanges and testing Watts chin with great lefts and rights on the inside. In the second Watts seemed to get it going and started tagging Sibson with jabs and long right hands. The third again appeared to be going well for Watts until a well placed uppercut dropped Watts for a count of five. Watts appeared very unsteady as the fight resumed and Sibson jumped all over him and did not seem to miss a punch he was throwing. Watts was trapped along the ropes taking a horrible beating when Referee Jen-Kin jumped in to save Watts from further punishment. A very impressive win for Sibson who picks up his second win of the year the first being a fifth round KO over Semi Bula back in March. When asked what his plans are Sibson replied "I just want a little rest then back to the gym and I would love to defend the title in front of my home fans back in England".

The under card featured Middleweight prospect Michael Olajide (17-0-0-11) who was involved in the fight of the month and very well maybe fight of the year against Juan Roldan back in January. Olajide was facing a tough customer in Semi Bula (23-2-0-8) who was coming off of a fifth round KO at the hands of Tony Sibson back in March. Bula again proved to be one tough customer as he took a very decisive beating over ten rounds. Olajide would send Bula to the canvas in rounds six and seven. The only problem Olajide had was a cut under his right eye that opened in the tenth and final round. Scores were 99-90, 99-89 and 97-91 all in favor of Olajide. Olajide continues to impress and with this victory has cracked the top 10. Also featured was Frank" The Animal" Fletcher (15-1-0-2) who pulled out an eight round unanimous decision by dropping Victor Claudio (20-2-0-14) twice in the final round to secure the victory, in what was a very close and competitive fight. I as well as two judges had the bout even going into the final round. Scores were 76-73 twice and 75-74. What hurt Claudio is he got wild and got dropped from being more off balance then hurt, he took counts of two and three when knocked down. Big win for Fletcher who was looking to rebound from a seventh round KO at the hands of Juan Roldan back in March. Also featured was rugged Italian Vito Antuefermo (12-3-2-7) who stopped Rudy Robles (11-3-1-0) in seven rounds.

Super Middleweight Bouts May 86

Holmes wins WBA Title

Entering Saturdays WBA Super Middleweight Championship Lindell Holmes (28-0-0-13) was a 3/2 under dog but walked out the newly crowned champion. This was a tale of two fights. Rounds 1-7 were completely dominated by the hard hitting Fulgencio Obelmejias (26-0-1-26) who sent Holmes to the canvas with a solid right hand in the second. Holmes wisely took an eight count before resuming and used the ring to avoid further damage. Obelmejias was leading 68-64 unofficially after seven rounds. Then the wheels fell off in Round 8 as Obelmejias who was tiring was sent to the canvas with a stunning uppercut for an eight count. Obelmejias would visit the canvas again in the ninth this time for a nine count. After just two rounds Holmes pulled even on my scorecard 84-84. The final six rounds were all won by Holmes. The only problem Holmes had in the eleventh round was a point deduction for a low blow. Obelmejias took some pretty bad punishment in the tenth as Holmes was trying to put Obelmejias away. The final scorecards read 142-139 twice and 143-138 all for Holmes. Who stuck to his game plan that seemed to work to perfection survive Obelmejias early attacks and hope he would tire which is exactly what happened.

The co-feature we had an IBF Title Eliminator as Victor Cordoba (12-1-0-6) faced In-Chul Baek (18-2-0-16). Baek the 3-1 favorite coming into the bout was coming off a fourth round TKO loss to Chong-Pal Park, while Cordoba won an eight round unanimous decision over Tarmo Ussivirta back in March. Cordoba started quickly lighting up Baek with lefts and rights as the first round closed Baek was already showing swelling under the right eye. In the second Baek took back control and was abel to get Cordoba along the ropes and work his body and head effectively. In the third Baek moved inside and was able to get to Cordoba's chin with some solid hooks and uppercuts, Just before midway of the round Baek landed an explosive hook that dropped Cordoba for a 10 count. Baek has now earned himself a shot against current IBF Champion Graciano Rocchigiani.

Next we had Iran "The Blade" Barkley (17-3-0-10) and Murray Sutherland (20-0-0-9) squaring off in a ten rounder. Barkley the 3/2 favorite coming into the bout started well winning the first round with powerful hooks, Rounds two and three were evenly fought with both men landing clean blows. The fifth saw Barkley again landing the cleaner harder shots. I had Barkley up 50-48 after five. Sutherland finally won a round in the sixth as he seemed just a little fresher then Barkley. This carried over in the seventh as again Sutherland landed the cleaner shots as Barkley again appeared to be wearing down. I had the bout scored 68-68 going into the eighth. Barkley pressed forward and walked into a blistering hook that dropped him for an weight count. Barkley looked bad as he was allowed to continue and it only took one more Sutherland hook to drop Barkley for the ten count. Sutherland who has defeated to tough challengers back to back in Barkley and Ron Essett has earned himself a shot at the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Championship.

Super Middleweight News May 86

Next month will see Murray Sutherland (20-0-0-9) facing Chong-Pal Park (19-0-0-15) for the vacant WBC Super Middleweight Championship. On the undercard Chris Eubank (18-1-0-3) will face Ron Essett (20-1-2-11) in a WBA Title Eliminator.

Light Heavyweight Bouts May 86

Great Scott!!!! Spinks stopped in 8!!!

Entering Saturday Nights WBA Light Heavyweight Championship, everyone this writer included thought James "Great" Scott (25-0-1-21) had little chance of defeating the young pre-prime Michael Spinks (21-1-0-19). When Scott removed his robe it was evident that he was out of shape and looked like more then a 3/2 underdog. Spinks came into the ring in great shape coming off a ten round split decision victory against Virgil Hill back in January. Scott himself was held to a ten round draw against John Conteh back in February. Thru four rounds this fight was very close with each man splitting two rounds with the fourth being a candidate for round of the year. Scott and Spinks just unloaded on each other with each man scoring very clean and accurate power shots. Spinks controlled rounds five and six with great combos and solid movement. Scott's right eye began swelling shut in the fifth. Scott battled back in the seventh to draw to within a point on my unofficial score card 67-66. As the eighth round began both men met in the center of the ring and Spinks shot a jab out that Scott countered over with an incredible right hook and Spinks was suddenly laying face down trying to get his feet under him. The ref reached the count of ten at :32 of the eighth round. Scott ran around the ring like a mad man initially then slumped in the middle of the ring with his head in his hands. "No one gave me a chance" he said afterwards. When asked about his conditioning he stated "I was fine I fought eight hard rounds and took out Michael with one punch" "I may not look physically fit but I was ready to go 15 hard rounds if I had to". Whether he could go fifteen hard rounds or not is moot as he landed one of the best right hooks I've ever seen and claimed the WBA Light Heavyweight Championship of the world.

In the co-feature Jorge Ahumada (21-0-2-14) captured the vacant WBC Light Heavyweight Championship with a fourth round knockout of Lonnie Bennett (22-1-1-18). Ahumada a 5/2 favorite coming into the bout was coming in with a ten round unanimous decision victory over Leslie Stewart back in February, while Bennett fought to a ten round draw versus Vonzell Johnson back in March. Ahumada started quickly landing a stiff jab followed by straight right hands. A Ahumada jab opened a cut over the right eye of Johnson in the first, the cut did not deter Johnson who fought right back landing great shots of his own. In the second Johnson came out and tested Ahumada's chin early and Ahumada did not respond well as a Johnson hook dropped Ahumada for a seven count. Johnson jumped on Ahumada but could do no further damage. Ahumada bounced back in the third and again was using a great jab and straight right hands. As the third round came to a close both of Johnson's eye's were beginning to swell. The third round was the beginning of the end for Johnson as Ahumada picked up in the fourth right were he left off in the third and pounded away at Bennett who suddenly had no answer for what Ahumada was landing. Bennett just slumped against the ropes as Ahumada was teeing off on the defenseless Bennett the ref jumped in to save Bennett from further punishment. Despite the knockdown in the second Ahumada fought a very impressive fight.

The under card featured young Willie "Sandman" Edwards (18-0-0-14) who is ranked 17th in the division taking on #9 ranked Jerry Martin(23-2-1-22). Both men were seeing action for the first time this year and Edwards showed great skills in earning the ten round unanimous decision by scores of 96-93 twice and 97-93 I personally had it 97-91 for Edwards. Edwards showed great poise as his right eye began swelling in the fourth but Edwards never panicked and just went about his business. Edwards best round was the first as he actually hurt Martin and almost got him out of there. Edwards is sure to crack the top ten with this victory. Lenny LaPaglia (11-2-4-6) and Johnny Davis (13-2-1-1) fought to an eight round draw. Scores were 77-76 Davis, 77-75 LaPaglia and 76-76. My scoring was inline with the third judge at 76-76. Jeff Harding (2-0-1-1) was impressive in scoring his first career knockout as he stopped TC Robert Elton (0-3-0-0) in the fourth and final round. JB Williamson made his pro debut earning a four round split decision victory over TC Johnny Clark (0-7-0-0). Scores were 39-97 Williamson, 39-37 Clark and 39-37 Williamson again I scored inline with the first and third judge, 39-37 Williamson.

Next month Marvin Johnson (20-0-0-17) will face Tony Willis (21-0-0-18) for the vacant IBF Light Heavyweight Championship. On the under card Willie Featherstone (22-2-0-15) will face John Conteh (17-0-1-11) with the winner to face Jorge Ahumada in Ahumada's first defense.

Grant Stops Mutti In Four Rounds

Uriah Grant (27-0-0-26) captured the vacant WBA Cruiserweight Championship with a stunning fourth round knockout over previously unbeaten Chisanda Mutti (26-1-0-13). Grant was coming into the bout off a sixth round TKO over Jose Maria Flores back in February, while Mutti earned his shot off the strength of his 10 round unanimous decision victory over Andy Straughn back in March. Grant completely dominated this bout from the opening bell as Mutti never appeared to be in the fight. Grant started quickly as he used a great jab to set up all his other punches. Early in the second Grant feinted with the jab then landed a crushing overhand right that left Mutti in a pile on the canvas. Grant looked very impressive considering physically he did not appear to be in the best of shape.

The co-feature pitted Australia's Steve Aczel (31-1-0-26) and Ossie Ocasio (21-1-3-4) squaring off for the vacant WBC Cruiserweight Championship. Ocasio a 5/2 favorite started well winning the first round with sharp counters but it was all down hill from there for Ocasio. His troubles began in the second round when Aczel got inside and landed crushing right hands that caused Ocasio's left eye to start to swell. Aczel would then win the next four rounds as he just got the better of Ocasio who seemed frustrated by his inability to keep Aczel at bay. As the seventh round began Ocasio looked worse for wear as he seemed like he was out of steam. Ocasio mustered enough energy to actually pull out the seventh round in the final seconds with a sizzling combination This would be Ocasio's last stand as Aczel put pressure on Ocasio in the eighth and a screaming right hand would drop Ocasio for a six count. Ocasio rose but did not appear to have his feet under him. Aczel pressed forward trying to close the show and after a number of clean punches got thru Ocasio's guard referee Marty Denkin had no choice but to step in and save Ocasio from further punishment. Impressive win by the under dog Steve Aczel.

The Under Card

#21 ranked Dave Russell (14-0-0-9) scored an impressive 3rd round knockout over #29 ranked John Odhiambo (11-2-0-3). The first round was a barn burner as both men threw defense out the window and stood toe to toe and traded heavy shots. Russell landed the harder shots while Odhiambo countered effectively. Slight advantage to Russell in the first. The second round was evenly fought with again both men having their moments. The third round saw Russell launch an incredible right hook that floored Odhiambo for the 10 count. Next we had Henry Tillman (10-2-3-1) lose on a seventh round DQ against Tyrone Booze (7-2-3-0). Tillman's behavior was in exscusable as he was well ahead on all three score cards he just could not stop starying south of the border with his punches. In a scoring travesty Massimiliano Duran (1-1-0-0) was robbed of his second pro victory when amazingly two of the three judges scored the bout for TC Dylan Kyte (1-7-0-0) by scores of 39-38 and 40-37. The second judge actually had it scored correctly 39-38 Duran. Duran was obviously upset. Finally Nate Miller (2-0-0-1) earned his second pro victory by a four round unanimous decision over TC Alex Daniel (1-6-0-1) by scores of 40-36 x2 and 39-37.

Douglas Claims Title with 5th Round TKO

Coming into Saturday nights WBA Heavyweight Championship Buster Douglas (27-0-0-23) was a 3/2 favorite over James "Quick" Tillis (23-1-3-15) but when he removed his robe he looked flabby and out of shape. Tillis on the other hand looked to be in incredible shape. Douglas was coming into the bout with a 2nd round kayo over Leon Spinks back in January, while Tillis stopped Lynn Ball in nine back in February. The opening round saw Douglas control the tempo with a stiff jab and straight right hands. Tillis couldn't seem to find a rhythm. In the second it was Tillis who controlled the action as he managed to get inside on Douglas and do some nice body work. The fight was even after two but in the third Douglas took complete control of this one. Douglas landed a sizzling right hook over a Tillis jab that rocked Tillis badly. Douglas went on the offensive as I'm sure he could not last long in the type of shape he appeared to be in. As the third round closed Tillis had severe swelling under the right eye. Douglas picked up win the fourth were he left off in third, and a minute in a Douglas cross exploded off the chin of Tillis who visited the canvas for the first time in his career. Tillis struggled to his feet by the count of eight and managed to keep Douglas at bay for the remainder of the round. In the fifth Tillis seemed to have his feet back under him until a Douglas uppercut almost decapitated him. Tillis quickly retreated to the ropes where Douglas proceeded to tee off until referee Tony Weeks jumped in to halt the contest. Douglas looked incredible considering he appeared to be out of shape. It's back to the drawing board for Tillis who was really never in this fight.

The co main event was such a let down and so anti climactic. We had Iron Mike Tyson (19-0-0-19) squaring off against Al Lewis (21-1-1-10) for the vacant WBC Heavyweight Championship. Tyson was a slight 2/1 favorite as the pre prime slugger was facing a prime Lewis. The bell sounded and both men came forward Lewis threw a wild left hook that Tyson ducked under czusing Lewis to lose his balance and go crashing to the canvas onto his left shoulder. Lewis screamed in pain as he hit the floor. Lewis was unable to continue and Tyson was awarded the title after only :37. Tyson himself was let down. "I was looking forward to a tough fight. All this training pretty much went down the drain.

The evening started when TBCB Community fan favorite Mel Turnbow (2-1-0-0) boxed beautifully enroute to a four round unanimous decision victory over Rochell Norris (0-5-0-0). Turnbow was incredible as a he pitched a shut out on two cards and the third was scored 39-37. Turnbow out landed Norris 126-61. The next under card match featured Al Jones (2-0-0-0) taking on Brian O'Melia (0-6-1-0). Jones was impressive even scoring a third round knockdown of O'Melia. Scores were 39-37 across the board. We then witnessed Proud Kilimanjaro (18-5-1-12) and Marvin Stinson (12-3-3-4) battle to an eight round draw. Kilimanjaro was an 8/1 favorite coming into the bout but Stinson showed he came to fight. Stinson would visit the canvas in the second as a Kilimanjaro left right deposited Stinson on the seat of his paints. Kilimanjaro seemed to fall apart in the third after a Stinson jab opened a cut above his right eye. I personally scored in favor of Stinson 77-75 but the judges didn't agree, two scored the bout 76-76 and the third scored for Kilimanjaro 77-75. Scores seem a little off as Stinson out landed Kilimanjaro 225-106. The support bout was a rematch of a bout that took place back in February. Fonomanu Sekona (17-2-0-17) was looking to repeat his upset victory over Gerry Cooney (21-1-0-20). Sekona stopped Cooney on cuts back in February but would not have the same luck tonight. Cooney completely domintated this one as he landed bombs from the opening round on. In the fourth a Cooney cross finally put Sekona to sleep. At 1:33. Cooney looked very sharp and did not appear to be apprehensive or concerned about another cut.

Fight Of The Month

Hector Thompson (23-1-1-8) vs Bruce Curry (24-1-2-14)
Vacant WBA Jr Welterweight Championship

The main event featured Australian Hector Thompson (23-1-1-8) and replacement fighter Bruce Curry (24-1-2-14) battle over 15 grueling rounds. Curry who took the bout on short notice when Guillermo Mosquera withdrew from the fight , fought a very determined and spirited fight. Thru three rounds I had the bout scored 29-29. Curry came out in the first and showed he was their to fight as he started very quickly and got Thompson's attention early with a sweeping right hand. Curry was off to a good start in the second round when he landed a jab that caught Thompson on the top of his head and you instantly saw Curry grimace in pain, after that Thompson came back and pulled the round out. The third round was very evenly fought as both men had their moments. I scored the third 10-10. In the fourth again both men took turns out landing the other a very difficult round to score as most of this fight was. Over the next two rounds both men exchanged heated punches with neither man backing the other off. After six I had the bout scored 58-58. Thompson himself now was complaining of hand pain. Rounds seven thru nine were again very evenly fought without a clear cut winner between them. Both men again stood and traded with both men landing hellacious punches.. After nine I had the fight scored 87-87. In the tenth Thompson appeared to be taking over as Curry seemed a little worse for wear. Thompson landed concussive power shots in the tenth that began to swell Curry's right eye as well as opened a cut over the right eye. Thompson controlled rounds ten and eleven as well as Curry just couldn't seem to get it going. After twelve I had Thompson up 117-114. As we entered the championship rounds it appeared as Thompson was going to pull away with it but as round thirteen began Curry looked to have gotten his second wind. Curry came out looking to turn the tide and a well placed right hand rattled Thompson to the core. Curry turned it on trying to get Thompson out of there but Thompson was just to resilient. Thompson's right eye was now beginning to swell also. Curry came out in the fourteenth like a man possessed and as hard as Thompson tried to keep Curry off of him he was unable to. Curry threw some wicked body shots that seemed to cause Thompson to bend over every time they landed. Going into the fifteenth I had Thompson up 135-134 and Thompson seemed content to try and stay away as he felt he had the fight won. Curry continued to press and won the round but was unable to land anything to get Thompson in any serious trouble. I had the bout scored 143-143 a draw but the judges didn't agree all three judges scored in favor of Hector Thompson 144-143, 144-142 and 145-141. Thompson was elated as he was joined by countryman Jeff Fenech who also captured a world title earlier this month in the ring for the post fight announcement. When asked about the replacement Curry Thompson chuckled and stated "If this guy was this tough on short notice I'd hate to fight him fully prepared". Curry of course disappointed felt he won and feels he should definitely be given a rematch and proper time to prepare. I wouldn't mind seeing these two go at it again.

Fighter Of The Month

Simon Brown
(25-0-0-25)
WBA Welterweight Champion

Simon Brown earns the nod with his Ko Victory over Tommy Hearns. Brown was sustaining a horrible beating up until the moment he dropped Tommy with one punch. Brown hopes to unify the title but that will be no easy task as there is Wilfredo Benitez and a young Sugar Ray Leonard on the horizon.

Komiyama Dominates In First Defense

Katsumi Komiyama's (20-1-1-2) incredible year continues. Komiyama was making his first defense of the IBF Straweight Championship he won back in February. Komiyama was defending against the man he won the title from four months ago Hideyuki Ohashi (24-3-4-7). Ohashi earned this bout with an incredible first round knockout over Carlos Alberto Rodriguez. Ohashi again as last time was coming in as a 3-1 favorite. Whoever underestimated Komiyama again will surely not do it again anytime soon. Komiyama coming into the bout felt disrespected. "I am the champion why Ohashi is favored again is ridiculous". Well Komiyama put all nay sayers to rest as he completely dominated and broke Ohashi down on his way to a fifteenth round TKO. When I say dominated that is not an understatement. Komiyama out landed Ohashi 528-260. Ohashi had only won one round on the judges scorecards mine included. He would visit the canvas for counts of eight and six in the fourth and fourteenth rounds, and his face was a mask of pain as he had swelling above the right eye and a nasty cut above the left which the doc examined in the fourteenth. As the final round started you could tell Komiyama wanted to end it he did not want to go the distance. He quickly jumped on Ohashi and landed an incredible right hook that almost made Ohashi's knee touch the floor, how he stayed up is beyond me. Ohashi was in serious trouble and it didn't take to many more shots form Komiyama before the ref jumped in and stopped the fight. "Maybe now I get respect. I've beaten him twice now and this time was emphatic. I look forward to meeting Sogcwe in September. It was nice fighting in front of my people."

Komiyama made reference to Tamsanqa Sogcwe (14-2-4-3) who narrowly won his IBF Eliminator over Titing Dignos (15-3-1-3) earlier in the evening. What a competitive fight as both men stood and traded for twelve rounds. Dignos main problem was he got dropped twice which would be the difference in the scoring. I myself had it 113-113, while the official judges saw it in favor of Sogcwe, 114-112 twice and 113-113. Dignos visited the canvas in the second and tenth rounds. After the second round knockdown Dignos got it together winning the next five rounds. Sogcwe stormed back taking the last half of the fight. Dignos out landed Sogcwe 320-192. The match between Sogcwe and Komiyama should be a good one.

The under card bouts featured Nico Thomas (2-0-1-1) earning a four round unanimous decision over Shozo Adachi (0-4-0-0) and Wele Maqolo (1-0-1-0) got jobbed by the judges as he walked away with a draw over Zahid Kadeer (0-0-1-0)

In August Macario Santos (14-2-0-5) and Kyung-Yun Lee (17-1-0-7) will meet as Santos looks to make his first defense of the WBC Title, the under card will feature Bong-Jun Kim (15-1-0-4) and Nick Dalisay(14-2-0-0) in a WBC Eliminator. Finally in September Katsumi Komiyama (20-1-1-2) looks to defend his title for the second time vs Tamsanqa Sogcwe(14-2-4-3) and Eric Chavez (14-2-3-3) and Kenji Ono (9-2-1-1) will face off in an IBF Eliminator

Gonzalez Wins Title In Stunning Fashion

Humberto Gonzalez (18-0-0-13) entered the ring Saturday night as a 3/1 favorite over Dodie Boy Penalosa (17-1-0-2) and man did he not disappoint. Gonzalez came out looking for the kill early and at 1:36 a sizzling combo sent Penalosa to the canvas for the first time. He rose at the count of eight and quickly got on his bicycle. Gonzalez continued to come forward and landed some great shots. Right as it seemed Penalosa was getting his legs back under him a screaming Gonzalez hook dropped Penalosa again who frighteningly dropped to the canvas limply. He was then counted out at 2:06 of the first round. This was Gonzalez' second knockout of the year. He stopped Jose Ibiris in nine back in January. Penalaosa was coming into the bout off of a ten round unanimous decision over Flywell Botha, but was no match for the slugging Gonzalez. Looking ahead Gonzalez will meet German Torres in September for his first title defense.

The co-feature pitted Michael Ebo Danquah (22-3-1-6) and Udin Baharudin (13-3-2-2) squaring off for the AABU Jr Flywqeight Championship. Danquah was looking to rebound from a ninth round TKO to Shigeo Nakajima back in February, while Baharudin won a ten round unanimous decision over Mario DeMarco in April. Danquah took control early in this one winning three of the first five rounds with one round even. The sixth was a huge round for Danquah as he pasted Baharudin with lefts and rights opening a gash on the bridge of the nose of Baharudin and causing Baharudin's left eye to start swelling. Danquah then controlled the next three rounds as well even dropping Baharudin with a wicked uppercut for a eight count in the ninth. Baharudin would mount a minor comeback over the final three rounds opening a cut above Danquah's right eye in the tenth. I scored in favor of Danquah 116-113, while the official scoring read 116-111 twice and 117-114 all for Michael Ebo Danquah. The punches landed seemed a lot closer then the scoring. Danquah out landed Baharudin 342-301, 643 punches landed that's a lot of leather landing.

The under card bouts were a little surprising. Melchor Cobb Castro (11-1-0-1) picked up a fifth round DQ win over Augustin Garcia (16-2-1-5), when Garcia launched what appeared to be a very blatant low blow. Jaime Miranda (7-3-0-1) was upset by a TC Alim Bahir (2-1-0-0) by scores of 58-56 twice and 59-55. In another minor upset Alli Galvez (2-1-0-2) lost a four round majority decision to another TC Andres Barrera (3-3-0-1) by scores of 39-37 twice and 38-38. The only youngster to walk away with a victory was Rolando Pascua (2-0-0-0) who won a four round unanimous decision over Roberto Cardenas (1-4-0-0). Scores were 40-36 and 39-37 twice.

Jr Flyweight News June 86

Next Month Jaime Njorage (22-3-1-5) and Flywell Botha (17-1-2-1) will meet in a ten round bout with the winner to face Rodolfo Blanco (16-0-0-2) in September in an IBF Elimination match. In July Yoko Gushiken (22-0-0-18) will make his first defense against the very dangerous Jung Koo Chang (17-0-0-2). The under card bout will feature Vincenzo BelCastro (20-1-1-1) facing off against Vuyani Nene (15-0-0-12) with the winner to be the number one ranked WBA Contender. August will have Myung Woo Yuh (18-0-0-4) making his first defense of his WBC Title against Reinaldo Becerra (15-1-0-4), the under card will feature Jake Matlala (18-1-0-6) and Franco Udella (15-2-3-2) meeting in a WBC Title eliminator. And Finally Humburto Gonzalez (18-0-0-13) will meet German Torres (15-1-0-8) in his first defense of the IBF Jr Flyweight Championship
