EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: GAME 1

Game 1 was a matchup between Josh Simpson (TUC) and Chris Nicholas (FLA).

Simpson pitched in 5 postseason games last year, going 2-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 26 innings. After striking out Danny Wolcott to open the game, he got into trouble. Jonathan Reyes hit a hard ground ball between third and short for a single. Then Orlando Avila crushes a line drive off the wall in left. He hit it hard enough that, despite it being a double, Reyes had to hold at third. Simpson got Brian Wade to hit a soft roller to second for the second out of the inning but Flagstaff got a run out of it. With two out and a runner in third, Simpson struck out Mike Powell to end the inning, holding the Axemen to just the one run.

In the bottom of the 2nd, Steve Kemp picked up a one out single. Steve Stoddard then crushed a 2-2 pitch into the right center field gap and kept running until he reached third with an RBI triple. At the end of 2, the game was tied at 1.

With the game still tied at 1 heading into the 6th, Josh Simpson was replaced by Matt Teter. Avila picked up a one out single for his second hit of the day. Wade doubled, advancing Avila to third, and once again, the Axemen has runners on second and third with less than two out. Mike Powell singles, scoring one and bringing up Larry Sykes. Teter was able to get Sykes to ground into an inning ending double play. Flagstaff had a 2-1 lead.

Chris Nicholas left the game in the 8th inning with a 2-1 lead. He was replaced by Flagstaff closer Isaiah Brennon.

Ryan Noble struck out to lead off the inning.

Miguel Rodriguez worked a walk to put the tying run on base.

Ben McDaniel hit a soft ground ball off the end of his bat toward third and Larry Sykes charged hard. He scooped it up with his bare hand and threw to first in time for the second out. Rodriguez was able to move to second on the play.

Steve Guilfoyle worked a full count against Brennon before hitting a sharp grounder into right for a game tying RBI single.

Elijah Leggett took a huge swing on the first pitch trying to give his team the lead. He missed the ball instead. Leggett stepped out, talked to himself for a few seconds, and stepped back in. Whatever he said worked. He drove the next pitch over the fence in left to give the Turtles a 4-2 lead.

Chris Lawrence came in and picked up the save in the 9th as Tucson won game one of the series 4-2.

Josh Simpson was outstanding, receiving a no decision, but pitching 5 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts.

Steve Stoddard was 3-3 with an RBI triple.

Elijah Leggett was 1-4 with a 2 run home run.

WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: GAME 1

Mesa jumped all over Dennis Gunderson in the top of the 1st. After Jeff Beasley walked and Kyle Vault singled, Bill Howard deposited a 3-1 pitch into the left field bleachers to give the Spiders a 3-0 lead. They loaded the bases again but were not able to add to their lead.

Given a three run lead before he stepped on the mound, Bobby Compton looked confident when he threw his first pitch. However, after three pitches, Glendale had runners on second and third after a leadoff single by Robert Day and a double by Justin Winterbottom. Kevin Wade drove in Day with a single to right and Danny Morla gave the Redbirds a one run lead with a home run into the right field corner. The next three batters were retired in order but the damage had been done.

Winterbottom extended the Glendale lead to 5-3 with a solo home run to start the 3rd inning.

Gunderson threw his warmup pitches in preparation for the top of the 6th inning but ended up leaving the game with an injury. He was replaced by the Josh Kaufmann. Kaufmann struck out George Luedtke to lead off the inning but then gave up a double to Devon Cosby and a single to Aaron Boeck. Kaufmann was replaced by John Nye who gave up an RBI single to Jimmy Luxon on his first pitch. John Kovalchik then came out of the bullpen to face number nine hitter Michael Daniels. He grounded out and moved the runners to second and third for Jeff Beasley who singled and drove in a run to tie the game at 5.

Kovalchik retired the first batter of the 7th but walked Matt Bracken before being removed from the game. Allen Barnes only faced one batter, and Luedtke picked up a single against him. Ellis Henderson came in to the game. The first batter he faced was Cosby, and he walked him to load the bases. Boeck followed that by knocking the cover off the ball for a two run double. The Spiders came away from the 7th with a 7-5 lead.

There was a 63 minute rain delay in the 8th inning.

In the top of the 9th, Cosby stretched the Mesa lead to 3 with a solo home run.

Jai Norman singled to lead off the bottom of the 9th for Glendale. Dennis Aldridge doubled on the next pitch to move him to third. The Redbirds still trailed by 3 but the tying run was at the plate, represented by Seth Tomlin. Tomlin advances the runners with a groundout making the score 8-6. Jordan Powell flied out to shallow left and Bob Aguilar struck out to end the game.

Mesa took a 1-0 lead in the series with an 8-6 win in the series opener.

Aaron Boeck was 2-4 with 1 double, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.

Bill Howard was 1-5 with a 3 run home run.

Devon Cosby was 2-4with 1 walk, 1 double, 1 home run, 2 runs scored, and 1 RBI.

Matt Bastow took the hill for Tucson I’m game 2. Kelvin Augustin was the starter for Flagstaff.

Danny Wolcott tacked on another run with a two out single. Flagstaff led 3-1 after 5.

Mike Powell doubles in the 6th and Jeremy Elliott and Billy Gonzalez extended the lead with RBI singles.

WESTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP: GAME 2

Ernesto Osorio got the start for Glendale in a game they really wanted to win. They knew they would be in trouble if they lost both home games to open the series. He pitched a quick scoreless 1st.

John Murphy got the start for Mesa, and despite loading the bases, he struck out the side in the 1st and kept the game scoreless.

Devon Cosby doubles with two out in the 2nd and came around to score on an Aaron Boeck single as Mesa went ahead 1-0.

Glendale tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a Justin Winterbottom single, a couple of walks, and a Jai Norman sacrifice fly.

Robert Day reaches in an error to lead off the 5th and Winterbottom gave the Redbirds a 3-1 lead with a 426 ft home run into left center field.

The Spiders battled back in the 7th. Matt Bracken worked a full count and hit a leadoff home run in the inning. Cosby, Boeck and Michael Daniels strung together three singles and got another run across the plate to tie the game at 3.

Seth Tomlin led off the bottom of the 8th with a single. Jordan Powell struck out and the Spiders went to the bullpen to bring in Joe Magdaleno who got Jimmy Luxon to ground into an inning ending double play.

Mesa couldn’t do anything in the top of the 9th and Magdaleno came back out to try to sent the game to extra innings.

Kyle Jacobs pinch hit to lead off the bottom of the 9th and reached first on an error. After Winterbottom flied out to right, Kevin Wade drew a walk.

Danny Morla came up to bat with two on and one out.

He smoked a line drive into left field. Kyle Vault charged the ball and threw to the plate as Jacobs raced home. Vault grabbed his arm and winced in pain as Jacobs safely crossed the plate. It came out after the game that Vault was likely to miss a few games.

The Redbirds evened the series with a walk-off 4-3 win in game 2 of the series.

Justin Winterbottom was 2-4 with 1 walk, 1 home run, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI.

Danny Morla was 1-3 with 1 walk and a walk-off RBI single.
