Releasing a Player before Extension

I just noticed this, and maybe I should test it more, but it seems that if you have a player with a pending extension, if you release that player, you are not obligated to pay any of the extension. Is this intended behavior? Seems like it could be abused if signed at the beginning of the season and then cancelled after the season but before the next year kicks in. I have only tested it in the period after the world series and before FA. Just seems like something is off.

option years only, but a future contract should be guaranteed?

it's not something a team would do, if they extended someone in the first place barring drastic change in talent.

are you certain you don't have yearly costs added? maybe, the contract has to hit day 1 to show, since it is an odd situation of a player being cut with a pending 2nd guaranteed contract still owed too.

you could google mlb extension release and see what comes up. read through the mlb rules etc. it may have happened before, but i doubt it is common.

Definitely not true. Just signed a player to an extension and now that he’s out for the year I tried to release him and it wants to charge me for all 5 years, including the player option.
