Consistent problem in 1980 league

My favorite era of MLB is the late 70s, early 80s.

I have played through 3+ seasons in a 1980 league and have seen that the vast majority of batters hit .300 - .400+, and most SP have ERAs between 5.00 and 8.00. Highly inflated batting averages and earned run averages. My weakest staring batter was Ken Reitz, who hit .299. Even my bench was powerfule (Jim Lentine hit .407 in 108 at bats).

When I create leagues in the 2005+ era, I get a range of good, average, and poor hitters and pitchers. Much more realistic. So for my custom leagues, I use the 2005+ ratings.

What am I doing wrong with my 1977 - 1980 leagues? I have created several and tweaked various options, then tested by simulating half a season in each. All of them have really inflated hitting stats and earned run averages.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Edit: I have tried using both Real Life stats and neutralized stats as a basis and get the same results.

How exactly are you creating your league? What steps?

I just created a test 1980 league and everything looks fine to me.

Thank you for your help, mjj. My wife got me OOTP back in April (birthday); I'm still learning the ropes.

I have played 2 seasons with the Cardinals, and simulated multiple seasons with both AL and NL teams to test my findings. All results were in the same ranges.

Note: I follow the same overall settings regardless of which era I use. I only have the inflated stat issue with non-2005+ leagues (tried 1977 and 1980)

Historical settings: Defensive Era (1980 – 1992), Year: 1980, Career Play

I do not import the complete history. I’m looking to start with a clean slate.

Uncheck “Use real historical transactions” and “Use real historical lineups”

No minor leagues; I just use the reserve roster

No automatic expansion

For player development, I’ve used both recalc using real stats and using the talent ratings and OOTP development engine

Check both play in commisioner mode and cannot be fired

Advanced settings:
Uncheck scouting system, suspensions, personality/morale

Do not touch player evaluation AI settings (defaults to 30% ratings, 50 current year stats, 15 prev. your stats, 5 two years ago stats)

Do not touch the “make bad” settings

Rules:
DH for both leagues. Assume it will give a small spike to NL, but no more so than the AL would already have.

28 man roster

Enable amateur draft, disable fictional player creation

Historical:
Do not automatically adjust league strategy (want to play 1980 style)

Automatically import historical rookies (to draft pool)

Tried using both recalc and not using recalc)

Strict 5-man starting rotation

Left strategic tendencies mostly untouched; did bump up use of closers to Very Often from Often (note: for 2005+ era leagues, I set the tendencies close to 1980 and use historical players, usually ranging from 1970-1980, and get a good spread of high, average, and low stats for both batters and pitchers)

1980 play notes; half played out, half simulated

The lowest ERA for a SP in 1980 was 3.41. The seventh lowest was 3.99. The majority of SPs averaged between 5.00 and 8.00.

The top seven batters hit between .367 and .425. Most starters were well over .300.

1981 came out pretty much the same. Pete Vuckovich won the NL Cy Young award with a 16-12 record and an ERA of 3.78 (one of the lowest ERAs). Bob Forsch was 19-5 with a 5.05 ERA.

I created my test league using the wizard, changing no default settings. Like I said, my results seemed normal. Top hitters were around .340. I had a couple of pitchers (Nolan Ryan one) who finished with sub 2.00 ERAs.

Your settings seem fine also. The only thing that jumps out at me is "Do not adjust league strategy."

Try this -- next time you create a league, choose a different year in the year dropdown (doesn't matter which year, just something other than 1980), and then select 1980 again. Now sim a full season and see what you get.

Interesting. I tried your suggestion and chose a different year (even a different era) from the dropdown, then switching back to 1980. It worked. I tested two different games, full year sims, and received a good range of statistics across the board.

I did leave in adjusting league strategies, but one would not think that would impact the first season of a league.

Thank you for your help.

It's a long-standing bug that I encountered when adding new leagues to an existing universe. I didn't think it affected initial game setup, but you must be doing something to trigger it. Glad to have found it.
