Sorry everyone but after a computer crash I needed to reformat and my Montreal Canadiens Dynasty went bye bye. I decided on a different approach and team. Hope you enjoy.

Edmonton Oilers

On August 15th Edmonton announced the hiring of new GM/Head Coach Phoenix Roberts (yes that is a fictitious name). He was given the task to be part of the playoff race. His first task was to make an evaluation of the team in place. Ownership has warned against a blow-up the team approach and are willing to suffer some growing pains.

Mr Roberts:

“The team has some glaring weaknesses and some obvious strengths. We are young and lacking playoff experience. This team is top heavy but are failing in our own end. While avoiding to sell the farm it may require giving up some assets up front to salvage our frail blueline.”

“Ben Scrivens is our clear starter, which sadly speaks volumes about out troubles in goal. The only advantage to Scrivens this season is his $550K price tag but that will grow to $2.3M per season for the two seasons after that. Viktor Fasth is to be our backup, and at $2.9M he is an expensive one give his limit talent. Laurent Brossoit is a decent goaltending prospect and if he proves himself ready he may get a shot as backup this season. Richard Backman and Tyler Bunz fill out our goaltending.”

“Justin Schultz is a very good young dman but asking him to shoulder the brunt of the work for this team is asking a lot from a 23 year old. Andrew Ference is a solid veteran that could not but the 34 year old would be better suited for a second pairing role than a first pairing role he may be forced into here. Jeff Petry, Mark Fraser, and Anton Belov follow suit on the team as serviceable spare parts that compete for 2nd pairing duties while being 3rd pairing talent. Four prospects are trying to fill in the reaming hole which are Martin Marincin, Philip Larsen, Oscar Klefbom, and David Musil. The strongest prospect is Darnell Nurse that may become a future elite dman for this team if handled correctly.”

“It's obvious that the strength of this team is offence, offence, offence. This starts with the first line of Taylor Hall, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Jordan Eberle which is an amazing first line that any team would envy. Our second line is also very solid in Ryan Smyth, Sam Gagner, and David Perron. Our third line offers serviceable players with a mix of offence and defence with Matt Hendricks, Boyd Gordon, and Nail Yakupov. The team sort of falls off after that. We will see if we can piece together a good fourth line from the parts we have or add more. Jujhar Khaira is our top signed prospect on offence.”

“It is time for this team to discover the science of defence and move forward on learning what 3-zone hockey. The return of the Oilers dynasty starts now, one step at a time.”

Off-Season 2013:

Edmonton will struggle in the one area that is should not be as it counts Sam Gagner (3 months) and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (8 weeks) as of August 15th. These needs will need to be addressed as soon as possible for this team that struggles in every other area.

In his second day in office Phoenix Roberts was a busy man. His first order was the signing of Justin Schultz to an extension. The deal is of a total value of $11.25M over 5 years.

“This move was a no-brainer. He is our best defensemen and is very young. We are lucky to be able to add him for several years at a reasonable price tag. It is important to reward your internal building blocks.”

In other news Tyler Bunz, Steve MacIntyre, and Steve Pinizzotto had their contracts bought out.

With injuries to the team the next move of Mr. Roberts was to fill out the roster with some depth moves by signing Simon Gagne, Denis Arkhipov, Daniil Markov, Tim Connolly, Blake Gal, and Matt Hewitt.

After a month in charge of the Oilers, Phoenix Roberts completed a trade. Most remove the trade as underwhelming although it rid the team of a useless contract.

To Tampa Bay:
Mark Arcobello, Viktor Fasth, and 5th round pick

To Edmonton:
Philippe Paradis and the rights to Dylan Blujus

“The key to this deal, and the possible high price paid, was to get rid of a contract added by the previous administration. We get some added youth in Paradis and Blujus.”

The season starts tomorrow after an eventful summer in Edmonton.

October 2013:

The season was underway for Edmonton with a home start against Winnipeg. The line-up was as follows:

Hall – Connolly – Eberle
Gagne – Gordon – Yakupov
Smyth – Arkhipov – Perron
Hendricks – Horak – Jones

Ference – Schultz
Markov – Petry
Belov – Fraser

Scrivens
Bachman

The month of October went better than some had anticipated with the Oilers going positive with a 6-5-1 record which was good enough for 5th place in the West.

Slight tweaks and additions helped this team and the true weakness that came out was backup goaltending as Bachman was pretty terrible in the couple of games he was called upon to play. The return of Nugent-Hopkins was good but not as impactful as hoped as the team won less with him in the lineup. Hopefully the return of Sam Gagner will make more of a difference.

November 2013:

The Edmonton Oilers are hopeful heading into the second month of the season after showing that they could compete in the strong Western Conference. Some argue though that many of their wins came against Eastern opponents. Phoenix Roberts was honest about his club in one of his candid post game remarks.

“Are we a powerhouse team? Of course not. Before the season started we were viewed as a bottom feeding team that will again miss the playoffs due to lack of depth on the back end. Right now we are getting our wins where we can. We are not a powerhouse team like the Kings or the Hawks but trust me, we'll bring something to the table.”

There were a few injuries and a few returns throughout the month. There was also a trade.

Richard Bachman, the rights to Marc-Olivier Roy, and the rights to Bogdan Yakimov

“We needed something to shake up the team. Bachman was simply not cutting it. Giving away two propects was a steep price to pay but we needed to strengthen this position right away. Getting a solid player at this time of the year can be tricky as not many were willing to deal. Khubodin will get his chances here and we will give him play time based on his performance.”

The Oilers finished the month at 14-10-3 which is good enough for 6th in the West. The stand at 98 goals which is number 1 in the league but their 28th place 91 goals against leaves a lot of place for improvement.

The Oilers were impressive in the month of December by defeating Anaheim and Los Angeles. Overall however they fell somewhat short in the consistency department and proved that their defence is still in the need of an overhaul. Their fall to the 7th place is distressing for fans. GM Roberts has been silent and best guesses are he is trying to bring in someone to pilot the blueline. The only name of note on the trading block is Mark Streit.

With the discussions of trades lingering all month some players stepped up in the month of January that saw Edmonton bring their season record to 27-22-7 for a 8th place. GM Roberts took stabs at getting pending free agent Michael del Zotto and Mark Streit. He seems bent on pursuing those avenues but it unwilling to give up certain components of his team. The most likely case being del Zotto as Nashville is back loaded and Edmonton has offence to spare.

After failed attempts, Oilers GM finally got his man by acquiring a young dman.

To Nashville:
Simon Gagne, Boyd Gordon, the rights to Erik Gustafsson, 2015 2nd round pick, and 2014 7th round pick.

To Montreal:
Michael del Zotto and Mikko Vainonen

“Nashville was looking for a good veteran offensive presence and Gagne gave them that. Boyd Gordon is an efficient center that provides them with solide depth. The gravy to this deal for the Preds were the additional draft picks. For us we get del Zotto who will need to quickly be signed.”

Phoenix Roberts managed as he said the next day signing del Zotto to a 3 year extension at $4.5M per year.

Sadly this month did not see Edmonton improve their standing as they remain in 8th place with teams breathing down their necks. The addition of de Zotto has yet to bear the fruits of the cost but GM Roberts is said to remain hopeful.

March showed some positive signs as the team maintained their course on the post season. It also included some contract talks as several players were given extensions such as D. Markov, Hendricks, and Petry. A total of 11 players re-upped for next season.

The season has ended with the Edmonton Oilers in 8th place. Throughout the season they topped out at 5th place but never dipped out of the playoff race. Their record of 39-34-9 was better than initially expected but still seems like the team struggled to maintain their place. A deep playoff run is not anticipated. GM Phoenix Roberts stated that his end of season address would come after the playoffs as he does not want to distract his team.

The playoffs end quickly for the Edmonton Oilers but there are things to take away from this season that are positives as they did make the playoffs. This offseason will prove crucial but nobody expects the mold to get blown up, maybe some tweaking.

“Of course we are still feeling the sting of our elimination yesterday and we will feel it all summer. I found that we battled so hard to get to the playoffs that suck a quick exit is painful. That being said we made the playoffs and managed to never be out of contention. Overall I am proud of this bunch of guys.”

“Offence was never the problem for this team and we proved it by being tied for 5th in the league in goals for. I'm happy about that achievement as are the boys. But we were 28th in goals against and that is very bad. This will need to be addressed. It has not been decided if we will bring someone in to more evenly share the workload with Scrivens or if we will bring on someone that will take over with him serving as backup. The Khudobin is over in Edmonton though.”

“Right now we will await the end of the playoffs and plan for the draft. There are things to be changed and we are more than one piece away from being a contender but I think with careful progression we are well on our way to becoming a threat.”
