Birmingham Barons (45-33 .577 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (36-44 .450 10 GB in 6th place in the Southern Division)

BIRM: Josh Spence (24-L 1-4 6.38 ERA 24 IP, 33 H, 3 HR, 13 BB, 12 SO) vs.
JAX: Pete DeVivo (29-R 3-6 3.91 ERA 103.2 IP, 97 H, 9 HR, 27 BB, 33 SO)

We traded them Spence on June 21 for RP Cody Shaw (27-L). In his first start for the Barons, he gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 6 IP and took a loss. He is a rookie and was the #2 prospect this Spring, but we traded him because he seems to be injury prone and is 24 years old and not yet matured enough to be an effective pitched in the Major League.

DeVivo gave up 1 run in 7 IP last time out, but had a no decision.

Independence Day!

Charlotte Hornets (41-41 .500 6.5 GB in 3rd place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (36-47 .434 12 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division)

JAX: Walt Urbanski (30-R 4-9 3.59 ERA 107.2 IP, 106 H, 3 HR, 44 BB, 47 SO)

Fitzgerald is their #1 starter. He had to leave his last start with abdominal soreness after facing 5 batters. The Hornets offered him to us in a trade for C Jason Boettcher, but we declined because Fitzgerald seems prone to injuries, though so does Boettcher. We have faced him once and scored 3 runs in 6 innings in a no decision.

Urbanski only gave up 2 hits and 1 run in 5 IP last time out, but had to leave because of a rain delay. He did not get a decision.

The Columbus Explorers are here to kick off the 2nd half with a 4 game series through the weekend. They swept the Hornets 4 games in Charlotte to end the 1st half. We lost 3 of 4 in Columbus in our first road trip of the season, April 5-8. They are tied for the League lead in runs scored with 4.79 per game (Jacksonville is #15 with 3.74). The Explorers are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.79 per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 4.18). Their run differential is +87, the best in the League, and ours is -39.

Columbus Explorers (53-34 .609 4.5 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (39-49 .443 13 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division)

COL: Ted Hubbard (28-L 5-2 2.64 ERA 64.2 IP, 65 H, 3 HR, 4 BB, 66 SO) vs.
JAX: Walt Urbanski (30-R 5-9 3.63 ERA 116.2 IP, 115 H, 3 HR, 45 BB, 50 SO)

Hubbard is their #1 starter. 16.5 SO/BB ratio! He missed almost 2 months with an injury. He gave up 3 runs in 7 IP last time out and took a loss. We actually beat him in Columbus for our only win in that series. We scored 5 runs in 7.1 innings.

Urbanski had a CG win last time out, allowing 4 runs.

I am not superstitious, but Trudy the Trainer is and she gave me a 4 leaf clover encased in plastic to stick in the sweatband of my cap. I it has probably been in that plastic for a long time and any luck it once had has long since faded, so I got a rabbit's foot in my pocket, just in case. It's a fresh one, too!

Columbus Explorers (53-35 .602 3.5 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (40-49 .449 12 GB in 8th (last) place in the Southern Division)

COL: Bobby Parish (32-R 7-8 3.67 ERA 117.2 IP, 113 H, 12 HR, 36 BB, 39 SO) vs.
JAX: Eddie Basset (30-R 2-3 3.10 ERA 61 IP, 60 H, 5 HR, 11 BB, 16 SO)

We traded them Parish for a player we ended up cutting. Parish gave up 3 runs in 6.1 IP last time out and got a win, ending a personal 3 game losing streak. He pitched a 6 hit shutout against us in Columbus.

Basset gave up 3 runs in 6.1 IP last time out, the same as Parish, but with our offense, he was lucky to get a no decision. He has not won a game in a month, going 0-3 in his last 6 starts, though his ERA has gone down.
