A Longer FHM4 Change List

As promised, this is a more detailed "what's changed in FHM4" list. This is by no means complete, just the best list I could put together from a variety of different sources, but mainly the build notes to our testers. I've probably missed a bunch of stuff - things like bugs that were fixed in the course of processing user support tickets, stuff where the eventual changes were a smaller part of much bigger design documents that I'd have to comb through to get the details, minor changes we made as a result of email or Skype discussions, things that are still being tested, and so on won't be in here.

I've removed most of the references to fixes we had to make to new features in the course of testing (a few probably slipped through), that would've made the list much longer. And there's no listing of most of the many text changes/corrections/additions and minor UI adjustments, or the details of the vast number of database changes that have happened over the last several months. And it's definitely not in any organized format, other than most of the prominent new features being at the start.

-commissioner mode is once again available in all types of game. Path to Glory-type restrictions, if desired, can be enabled by choosing to start the game in "Challenge Mode" (there's a popup window during setup).
-database is switched to a 2017-18 start, with leagues updated to reflect new teams, formats, etc.; NHL jerseys updated to the new adidas versions
-if you start a current game as the new Vegas NHL team, you have the option of re-drafting from the players who were actually made available in the expansion draft (with some logical omissions, e.g. UFA's that Vegas wasn't able to reach agreements with prior to the draft - i.e., no stealing Shattenkirk)
-new playable leagues: Austrian EBEL, Denmark, Slovakia, Poland, Belarus, SPHL, and LNAH. EPIHL is gone, as it is in real life. A few abstractions were necessary to make some leagues work in the game (e.g. dropping the U20 teams that play in some of those leagues), but we can now do things like split-season formats where the second half of the schedule is generated and the teams are split into different groups depending on the standings after the first stage
-European Champions League added
-flexible league structures and playoff systems in Custom Leagues - in addition to the pre-set structures, you can now choose (with some limitations) the number of conferences/divisions in your league, its schedule length, and number of teams.
-historical play extended back to 1917-18, including the other major leagues in the west in addition to the NHL. While they're active, the Stanley Cup is decided by an inter-league series at the end of the year. Roster/lineup sizes are bigger than they were historically; there are limitations to how far we can go without breaking the match engine and AI. No era-specific rules like PCHA rovers or different penalty systems/lengths, but possible at some point in the future.
-new historical challenge mode that lets you start a historical game with a specific "victory condition" (and accompanying achievement) that requires meeting/exceeding a historical accomplishment, e.g. winning 5 cups in a row with the 1950's Canadiens. Right now, there's one challenge per NHL franchise (minus Vegas).
-farm teams for historical play have been added - each playable historical team will have a farm club that changes names and location to reflect the actual affiliation in place for each season (so there are some oddities where e.g. two teams shared a farm team - you'll see two versions of that team in the game, one for each parent.) These teams are not playable. Stats will be generated in the same way they are for nonplayable teams in the modern game.
-several new international tournaments have been added - U17, Hlinka, the Euro Hockey Tour tournaments, etc.
-NHL players now barred from the Olympics.
-new system for handling uniform numbers. Players may ask for particular numbers and become unhappy if they don't get them. AI will assign them a little more intelligently. Numbers can be either retired or honoured (non-permanently retired); teams will begin the game with their currently-retired numbers and may add more via an automatic process. Team history now includes a list of who's worn what number for that team (not showing the full history prior to game start yet, working on getting that data.)
-there's now a "shop player" feature that allows you to solicit all teams in your league for trade offers on one of your players. Responses will be sent via PM.
-a new Hall of Fame system allows the user a vote in the Hall's annual nomination and selection process. You'll see this in June; you're assumed to have a seat on the HoF selection committee and work through the stages of the real nomination/voting/runoff procedures.
-line chemistry system is implemented. It allows chemistry to develop (or exist at the start of the game) between specific players, improving their on-ice performance when they're together. So, there's more incentive to build team chemistry by keeping your lines and lineup together.
-All-Star games now include the announcement of the results of a skills competition the day before the game.
-players can now gain new nationalities if they spend an extended amount of time in a foreign country, and can switch their national team allegiance once they meet the qualifications for representing a new country in international play.
-new record-keeping system that adds tracking of single-game records at both the team and league level, as well as expanded single-season and career records.
-new awards, including postseason all-star teams, have been added, as well as a longer award announcement process that releases the names of nominees first, then announces the winners later in the offseason.
-rookies are now properly-defined instead of using age/career GP approximations; they're marked with a * on the lineup screen.
-alumni lists have been added to the team history, allowing easy "Where are they now?" tracking of all current players that have played for the club.
-"Replace With" option on the player right-click menu allows players who are currently dressed to be replaced everyhwere in the lineup (i.e. on all lines they're on) with another player on the active roster, to allow for easier substitution for things like injuries, particularly short-term ones.
-many enhancements at all stages of the in-game experience (pregame, during, and postgame). Rink is replaced by a record of on-ice events (but still shown as a popup during highlights), there are new pre- and post-game notes screens that provide extra information, and the display options have brought back some FHM2 feautures like highlights mode.
-Storyline feature from Out of the Park Baseball implemented, allowing off-ice events to influence players and teams in unusual ways (prospects retiring to play another sport, crazy off-ice injuries and incidents, etc.)
-a new "Do not disturb" option in the manager options will turn off all interruptions, including critical PM's and news, for the user if he just wants to sim full/multiple seasons at a time
-news subscription interface rebuilt, allows filtering at team/league/tournament (i.e. international) levels; categorization of news stories also improved
-new team data page lists things like retired numbers, arena details, available draft picks, farm and parent teams, etc. in one location
-new league data page does the same for leagues (showing divisions, conferences, teams, drafts, awards, etc.)
-seasons column in biography view on roster screen shows the number of previous seasons (minimum 1 game) the player has played in this league-
-if you're employed, the Trade Offer button now opens the trade offer screen no matter which team you're looking at; if it's a team in your league the trading partner selected will be the team you opened it from
-player's career stats page now includes the number he wore for that team (also used in choosing the player's number when moving up/down from a farm team multiple times in a year)
-start dates of international tournaments to the league events pages.
-added stats recording to enable additional advanced stats (not shown in-game yet)
-"read all", etc. options on the news screen now buttons instead of a dropdown
-historical teams now change colours to the correct version for that year, e.g. Kings in purple and gold in the 60's-80's, Canucks in black-orange-gold in the 80's, etc.

-clicking "Play game vs." will now show the game even if the "show games" checkbox is unchecked (had been doing nothing when box was checked)

-coaches on user-owned teams will now be ignored when the AI is attempting to fill its head coaching job (i.e., can't be stolen by a higher-level league)
-when editing the current team of staff in a historic game in commissioner mode, only active teams will be shown instead of all teams in that league's history
-bottom end of the day scrollbar in "Autoplay to Date" should no longer be cut off at some resolutions

-AI should now ignore the (unsignable) Russian, Czech, and Slovak players in historical-mode drafts if the year is <1990, unless they also have Canadian/US nationality
-AI scouting assistant in historical mode should no longer target individual players
-player notations (TB, C, A, F, *, etc.) added to the player popup, so they can be seen even if cut off on the roster screen
-"VAC" status should now be applied more consistently
-news item for milestones should no longer showing the "win" version of the story when it should be the "loss" one and vice-versa

-player no longer displayed twice on the single-season leaderboards for if his current season makes the leaders
-the NHL playoff system used from 1974-75 through 1978-79 now correctly takes the top 3 teams in each division for the playoffs instead of the 4 division winners and 8 wildcards
-playoff trees now show, after the series result, either the number of games the series was scheduled for (i.e. 7 for Best-of-7) or "TG" if it was total goals
-second PK unit forwards should now get the correct amount of icetime instead of being ignored/prioritized below 3rd unit

-2015-16 and 2016-17 removed as options on the Transactions Log dropdown in a modern game

-goalie mental development sped up (had been getting hit by a penalty that was intended to slow skater mental development when it was too fast)
-Defensive Forward award formula changed to make it less likely for guys with poor +/- to win
-AI goalie-trading behaviour changed so the "trade for backup" AI looks for real backups, not ones with high star ratings (but who are also a significant improvement on the existing backup)
-the names of the playable leagues are now shown in all caps on the league dropdown, to distinguish them from the nonplayable ones
-player generation adjusted for enforcer-type players to limit their overall potential to a level a bit below NHL average (so no more enforcers with both 700+ offensive and defensive potentials), and enforcers will now be generated less often outside North America
-later stages of non-goalie development, when the player's offensive or defensive ability, or both, begin to approach his potential, slowed down so fewer players will reach maximum potential
-bridge contract mechanics adjusted to make them rarer and a bit more expensive

-the lower-middle rung of NHL-level players will now be a bit less likely to demand NHL-level salaries from foreign leagues, and if these players are free agents as the season progresses, they'll drop the NHL-level salary requests altogether (happens at the beginning of the NHL season for the worst ones, the 3.5+ star NHL guys will wait until January)
-in the player edit screen, KHL and NCAA league rights are now shown properly (it should be showing only leagues with the league rights option turned on in their rules)

-AI will tend to use higher settings for the "Start the Best Goalie" criteria in goalie start settings
-transaction problem fixed that could lead to the AI being unable to fill lines/lineup properly
-all playable leagues now have historical stats, including goalie stats. The goalie stats are from Eliteprospects, which doesn't track minutes, shots, or goals against (they just record the actual GAA and Save%, they don't store raw numbers and calculate them.) So, we had to back out an estimate for those stats, and they usually won't be a perfect match - save% will usually be right on, GAA off by <0.1 except for guys who played a very small amount
-several preliminary changes made to tactics to expand countering options and select more appropriate players for roles; assuming these work OK we'll move on to the next stage of improving lineup selection, which will use player templates to guide the AI to better choices
-many inter-league transfer guidelines adjusted in the database; the most visible should make it possible to sign players away from nonplayable leagues in the offseason rather than having them get perpetually stuck due to auto-contract-renewal
-almost all playable teams will now have at least one farm team or generic "farm team"; parents removed from some SPHL/FHL teams to improve rosters and gameplay in those leagues
-white text in the game adjusted to slightly off-white so it's less bright in the new font
-Hall of Fame goalie criteria should now properly apply a minimum games played standard
-Coach of the Year award criteria changed to avoid odd and occasionally skipped picks
-the post-1931 Ottawa Senators/St. Louis Eagles should no longer be treated as a separate entity from the pre-1931 Senators because they skip the 1930-31 season, leading to weirdness in the historical stats in seasons where the pre-31 team played
-staff retirement routines adjusted to prevent some staff from working into their 80's and 90's
-clicking continue in season summary before the season record animation is over no longer skips past the screen immediately, missing the chance to add new points to your stats
-player retirement news message should show a picture of the correct player now

-load quickstart is now under Load Game on the start screen
-the automatic annual contract renewal on nonplayable teams should now skip players who are contracted to playable teams, even if they're currently on a nonplayable team's roster
-players in nonplayable leagues who fail a particular type of movement check will no longer be set to free agency (was causing a lot of good younger players get briefly released on June 30 making them a free agent on July 1, at which point the AI teams grabbed them despite it being unrealistic for them to do so, e.g. many 16-year-old high-potential Canadians going to European leagues)
-player name on the popups is no longer out of alignment with the other lines
-the team dropdown popup no longer cuts off some longer league names (e.g. SPHL, QMJHL)
-staff reputations on the personnel screen no longer cut off
-the goal/penalty popups when viewing the game cover some of the user's forward lines selection boxes now go away when clicked
-text no longer cut off at the bottom of the Set Up Your Manager screen
-the longer tactics descriptions are no longer cut off at some resolutions

-QMJHL playoff crash fixed
-nationality dropdowns in the Set Up Your Manager screen should now have all of the major hockey countries at the top
-if you hit Continue on draft day without going to the draft, which results in getting the popup that warns you the draft needs to be completed, then go to the draft, all the options will no longer be disabled
-expansion is no longer available at the start of the game, only in subsequent seasons
-When an NHL team signs a player from a league where compensation is specified (i.e. the $240,000 for most European leagues), other team will actually get that money now
-AI-owned teams no longwe able to force the user to make a transfer-agreement trade without negotiations in some circumstances
-all offers should now close correctly when players sign with a team in another league
-after the first season ends the news on the player home screen will update properly, instead of just listing the July 1 news
-exhibition games no longer counted for staff jeopardy/firing purposes (led to very early firings)
-expanding the league should no longer result in multiple messages for all international tournament awards
-Olympics in some later seasons no longer skipped

Is the problem where a drafted college player would always play the full four years before considering signing in the NHL been fixed? That was irritating when a four star player would still be in the NCAA.

I didn't see it in this list but might have missed it.

No, still tends to do that, thanks for the reminder. It's one setting that can be tweaked fairly easily, but it's difficult to balance between guys leaving college at reasonable times and the NCAA getting strip-mined of every drafted prospect. I'll take another shot at adjusting it.

With the NCAA being unplayable, it might be better off for people playing for it to be strip mined easier rather than staying the four years all the time. Just my thoughts though.

Hello FHM team,

I am super excited for this new version and already pre-ordered my copy. October 2nd cannot come soon enough!

I am wondering if the issue of signing KHL players has been fixed?

Here's what Jeff wrote when I inquired about this issue in regards to FHM 3:

Quote:
The difficulty in signing players from the KHL is going to require some fundamental changes to the way the contract system works. Right now, star-level players understand that they can make more in the NHL and will reject contract offers at anything other than the most extreme KHL salary levels; but most KHL players who haven't reached that level yet are going to be willing to accept KHL money for a contract renewal (although it may not necessarily happen before NHL teams get a chance to make them an offer.)

I can't get too aggressive with lowering the threshold for holding out for NHL money or we'll have a large bloc of good Russian free agents sitting out because there's no NHL interest in them but they're too far out of the KHL price range. The way around this is to allow KHLers who want to play in the NHL more ways of getting out of existing contracts if they have an actual NHL offer. But that's going to require some heavy-duty rewriting of the contract and transfer system, more than we could've done in this update.
There was also an issue of teams not signing their top prospects/draftees and letting them become free agents...I do not remember if that was fixed in FHM 3.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, that's this change:

-the lower-middle rung of NHL-level players will now be a bit less likely to demand NHL-level salaries from foreign leagues, and if these players are free agents as the season progresses, they'll drop the NHL-level salary requests altogether (happens at the beginning of the NHL season for the worst ones, the 3.5+ star NHL guys will wait until January)

Alessandro has also returned as our Russian researcher and we're working on improving the handling of KHL roster rules.

The unsigned prospects thing was fixed a while back, I think. There's another issue with those guys being exposed to waivers when they shouldn't that's near the top of the active bug list.

It affects other leagues as well if it goes too far - it'll put guys who aren't really close to being ready for pro hockey on NHL farm teams, which tends to hurt their development. When it's wrong, after a few years we'll see a big group of ex-college players who had decent potential at one point, but fell apart by getting stuck on a pro roster before they should've been there. And it eats up a bunch of NHL contract slots, which creates problems signing guys who are ready to play.

The list looks pretty good. Were there any changes made to the tactical screen? It would be nice to view the player attributes while setting lines.

Ah I see, didn't realize any of that. I guess i'll just do what I did last year and edit the better NCAA players who should be in the NHL onto their respective teams when they're ready.

Jerseys and Logos

Not sure if this is the proper place to ask this question, but whatever. Will we be able to move over jerseys and team/league logos from FHM3? I know we unfortunately cannot move leagues over but I have spent a lot of time getting team and league logos correct (or at least to my liking) and do not want to repeat all the time and effort if I do not have to for the new game. By the way I cannot wait for 2 Oct 17.

Yup, should be completely compatible with 3, nothing's changed in the logo or jersey formats (we're looking at a fix for one issue with the colouring on the helmet chinstrap, so if you've done a lot of helmets you may have to make some small adjustments depending on what happens there.)

I sent in a change request this morning to adjust it a bit and take the player's current ability more into account, so that may see more of the good guys leaving early.

Everything sounds great :-)

Will it be possible in the game to correct the NHL's wrongdoing and allow NHL players at the Olympics as well as exchanging the gimmick teams in the World Cup with other real national teams?

Aside from whether or not the NHL would be happy with that, it'd get a little complicated; we'd need to make the tournaments editable to begin with, and then a way of adding/subtracting league exclusions, which also gets into some problems with rosters and schedule conflicts if leagues that play through tournaments are changed to start sending players to them.

For the World Cup, it sounds like the NA/Europe teams may be on the way out next time; as soon as we get some credible confirmation of that, we'll change it.

What is the status quo on "fisticuffs", i.e. scrums, multiple fights, brawls, bench clearing stuff? Jeff once wrote that you guys were close to getting something done, I think.

Nothing new there, still serious issues with what only having a small number of players available (with all the ejections/penalties) would do to AI lineup logic, and sorting out precedence for complex penalty situations. I'd also like to get a suspension system working before we add brawls, so there are some reasonable consequences beyond just the immediate game.

"historical teams now change colours to the correct version for that year, e.g. Kings in purple and gold in the 60's-80's, Canucks in black-orange-gold in the 80's, etc."

Will the jerseys change as well?

They're still the generic ones unless you've got a historical jerseys mod installed, but yeah, they'll change colours.
