How are All-Star Game Ballots Generated?
Does anybody have any clue how the All-Star Game ballot is generated in game? Our online league is trying to cutover to use in-game voting instead of statslab, but there are a few very clear snubs and I can't figure out how to fix it.
I thought it might be done using qualifiers (e.g. 3.1PA/game for hitters and 1.0IP/game for pitchers) but that doesn't seem to be the case, because we have non-closer relievers that are showing up with 7.84 ERA and 18.1IP at the break. Something seems...off...and I can't figure out the logic behind it. I would love to stop using statslab in favor of the great new features that the dev team worked on, but it seems a little difficult at this point. Any guidance is appreciated. |

Generally speaking, players show up based on their OSA rating. So if you look at your "meet the team" page on the day ballots are generated, the players on that list would be the guy on the ballot for your team at that position.
I do agree that it doesn't always generate a great ballot, but for a first attempt it's decent. We'll certainly look to refine the logic in the future. |

Got it, thanks for the response. I appreciate the transparency.
So are you saying that current season stats have nothing to do with whether a player shows up on the ballot? If so, we may need to look at possibly waiting until next year to use voting in game. |

This definitely needs to be looked at.
Also, anyone with at least 1.0 WAR needs to be on the ballot regardless of ratings, to prevent snubs. |

I'm happy to see this feature in the game and would love to see it get some attention in 17. |

We always welcome suggestions. The main points to keep in mind are that the ballots are generated once, the day of the "ballots open" event. And it's not an easy problem overall:
-Can't just use just games played, since you want a guy who's supposed to be great but was hurt early on to still make it. -Don't want to use just stats either, for a similar reason to the first point, if your closer had a few bad games early he should still be on the ballot. And the way things are built, since guys show up at one position, if a guy has shifted around to a couple spots, gotta figure out which spot to put him on the ballot. And don't want to not put a guy on the ballot if he's sucked, since hey, we almost saw Infante make the All-Star game this year in real life. |

I'm of the opinion that the All Star game should include the players who are playing best (stats) this year. The All Star game is played every year, so it shouldn't be about who's played the best the last 5 years, but about who's playing the best this year. If player X played well for 5 straight years and made 5 straight all star teams, good for him. This year he's having a bad year? Oh well, he doesn't deserve to be on the team this year. I don't care if a guy's been a bench warmer all his career. If he's got a starting job this year and is playing great, then he belongs on this years All Star team. |
