19th century settings

Hey all

I'm wondering if anyone has found settings to truly reflect 19th century stats. Has anyone taken up this kind of project at all?

Legendsport is working on a dynasty starting in 1869 ... (Fictional players, but trying to replicate the era otherwise)

Thread here:

Perhaps he could share the settings he used...

I'll give my avatar plug here.

<-- Jim Creighton - First baseball player to ever get paid for what he did in the 1860's. He was the first to snap his wrist when pitching underhand, a bending of the rules at that time. He began playing at age 18 and died at age 21 when during a home run he swung so hard that he not only broke his belt, but also ruptured his spleen and died from internal bleeding a few days later.

In case you didn't know.

Canadian - I think there's another dynasty floating around as well that starts in the 1860s or 70s. He mentioned one game with an absurd amount of errors.

Well gave it a try. REALLY high offense, high averages which worked. High ERA's (the average was 4.00 or so), and HR's (leader had 24 in a 36 game scheduele). This is with all team in circa 1800's parks (aka HUGE!) Also strikeouts were really up there for pitchers, 200+ for the leaders.

Needless to say, these settings dont' work. At least the errors were spot on.

I'm starting to think that it's impossible to get real stats for anything outside modern day baseball.

I decided to say heck with it and jsut use the 1901 stats, and yet HR's are still really high, ERA makes modern day look bad...bascialyl it looks like steroid ball. High averages, but high everythign else as well. Is this a lost cause?

Eck had pretty good numbers in a 19th century setting a while back. Have you asked him for suggested settings?

I haven't no. Thought it was only for OOTP6 though?

You can get accurate league totals going all th way back to 1871. The League Totals Modifiers work from 1871-2006. The only tricky part is getting the first season to turn out perfectly, but after that the modifiers will get the league to hit the right marks.

Using these works as well as anything else for the first year, IMO. You'll get a few too many walks, strikeouts, and homers, but the game will correct that for 1872 and beyond. The real problem is the error rate. If you set that at the historical level, third basemen will have FAs around .500. If you set it at 6.0, your aggregate runs scored will be far too low. Real-life runs scored in 1871 were about 21 runs per game, and that was mostly attributable to the 15 (!) errors per game the teams committed. Unlike the other problems, this seems to be an engine limitation that will not self-correct after the first year.

Do not type in different engine totals each season. The league totals modifiers wil take care of everything after the first season, including league FLD%. League FLD% in the 1870's was about .830. Try setting the Errors Modifier to something like 3.88 for 1871. 3bmen IRL in 1871 had a fielding% of .700 and .750 in 1872.

The settings I gave above I used in a league starting in 1870. They were given to me by Eck, and they've worked wonderfully. I haven't made any adjustments in the subsequent seasons. Look at the the league in my signature. The offense totals are just what I expected.

That clearly shows the advantages of the 1870 start date. I probably should have done that. The game will then correct for 1871, you can clear the league histories, and you're there.

Exactly what I did, yes. The other cool thing is that if you have the historical ids set correctly, the players will be loaded on the correct teams in 1871. Assuming you are using real and not fictional players.
