2013 Draft

1) Chesapeake Blue Crabs - Jorge Moran (SP)
>> Moran is the most refined player in the draft and could possible see some PT this season. The Blue Crabs are in desperate need of just about everything. Stuff 11/14, Movement 12/14, Control 12/18

2) New Castle Colonials - Matt Hollis (SP)
>> Hollis has a lot of potential, could end up a top-flight starter. 9/14, 12/13, 5/10 Stam 18

3) Norfolk Cavaliers - Arturo Ramirez (SP) *
>> Our scout wanted us to take Dan Nelson, but I decided to take Arturo Ramirez against his wish. Nelson is 18 year old CF that our scouts are seeing as Con 1/7, Pow 4/14, Eye 5/14 4* potential. Arturo Ramirez is a 17 year old kid with a high ceiling, 4* as well 13/13/14.

4) Baltimore Barons - Tim Simmons (SS)
>> Quite possible the best position player in the draft. A decent SS, but a better 3B. 5/9, 7/13, 6/9 3.5*

5) Dover Generals - Dan Nelson (CF) *
>> The guy our scout wanted.

6) Georgetown Sixteens - Terry "Sticky Hands" Taylor (P)
>> Has talent, instinct and desire to make it to the big leagues. If he reaches his potential he can be a solid #2 or 3. 8/12, 10/12, 4/13

7) Lewes Braves - Eugene Carpenter (P) *
>> A solid 4 star prospect with a high ceiling. 6/13, 9/12, 2/16

8) Ellicott City Express - Derek Campbell (CF)
>> I did think about taking this guy with our #3 pick. A defensive star to be with 16+ ratings in 6 positions with range and cannon to go with it. Hitting will the question a 3.5* prospect 6/9, 5/12, 8/12

9) Milford Clippers - Fabrice Bernard (P) *
>> Fabrice may never have the control to make the league club, but he has all the other pieces. Should be interesting to see how he develops. 6/11, 9/11, 1/6

10) Ocean City Tourists - Alexander Jordan (P) *
>> Our scouts see Alexander as a possible 5th or spot starter down the road. 6/12, 8/10, 7/19

The rest of our picks:
2) Maurice Noble (CF) * - 4/10, 5/16, 7/14 3* - a solid player with time to improve
3) Jack Dooley (OF) - 9/11, 7/12, 5/9 3.5* - possible .290 hitter
4) Bobby Myers (P) - 7/10, 7/10, 5/10 1* - could see the Big Time one day
5) David Harrison (CF) - 4/9, 4/11, 1/7 1* - overall subpar
6) Francisco Correa (SS)
7) Raymond Prigent (C)
8) Jeremy Pittman (CF)
9) Vincent Ayers (C)
10) Stephen James (C)

Week 9

Current Week: 1-5 (overall 25-33 8 GB 4th place)
Next Week: 4 vs Ocean City, 3 @ Washington
Power Ranking: 14
Fan Interest: 52
Owners Mood: Worried

** our worst week yet...

Game 53:
Norfolk 3, Lewes 11
Karl Armstrong (3-5) lost it in the 3rd, as the Braves scored 7 and took the life out of the Cavs. 3 IP, 10 H, 8 R . Tim Garner lead the offense with 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Game 54:
Norfolk 7, Lewes 9 (11 innings)
You can chalk this loss up to the bullpen. After score 3 in the 9th to take the lead the Braves scored 2 to tie, then walked off. Scott Smith took the ND, but didn't have the best of games going 4.2 innings, giving up 9 hits and 2 runs. Jacob Chaney had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, and Brian Cline added 2 HR's and 4 RBI.

Game 55:
Norfolk 3, Lewes 4 (14 innings)
A tough extra inning loss as the offense couldn't give Tsuneo Sato any run support. Sato threw 5.2 innings giving up 5 Hits and 3 Runs (2 ER). Patrick Shelton, Mauro Candelaria and Jose Rodriquez each had 2 hits for the Cavs.

Game 56:
Norfolk 5, Milton 6
Don Sweetapple took the loss, only his second of the year, allowing 6 runs (5 ER) over 6.2 innings on 9 hits. Sweetapple and Mauro Candelaria lead the way with 3 hits and 2 RBI's a piece. Candelaria hit his 5 bomb of the year.

Game 57:
Norfolk 6, Milton 3
Carlos Mateo threw 7 strong innings allow 3 runs on 8 hits, and Theo Petherick and Jack Clow (SV 13) each pitched a perfect innings, to end the 5 game losing streak. Pablo Freitas (HR 12) and Jacob Chaney each had 2 hits and 2 RBI.

Minor Injury News: Mauro Candelaria will miss the next 4 games with a sore hamstring.

Game 58:
Norfolk 1, Milton 2
Karl Armstrong did all he could, but fell victim to no run support, which seems to be a common theme this season for him. Karl threw a CG (8 ip) giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. Jacob Chaney's solo HR (5) in the 3rd was the only hit for the Cavs.

After the game it was announced Bobby Myers, our 4th round pick, has signed. He will be sent down to Jacksonville (A) to being his quest for the Majors.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Dave McDonald (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 7-18 6 HR, 10 RBI
Marva: Juan Alvarez (Richmond Cardinals) 14-26 2 HR, 10 RBI, 8 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Richmond Cardinals
2) Ocean City Tourists
3) Annapolis Admirals
4) Milton Brewers
5) Washington Senators
14) Norfolk Cavaliers

May in review will be next...

May Review

Players of the Month: Delaware Division

Hitter: Glen Hall (Newark Millers)
Hall hit .381 in May collecting 37 hits. He also smashed 12 HR's, knocked in 25 and scored 29 times.

Pitcher: Narcissus Catranides (Wilmington Iron Pigs)
Catranides won 4 times in 6 starts in May. He compiled a 2.63 ERA while striking out 18 over 41 innings.

Rookie: Peter Peters (New Castle Colonials)
Peter has now won 2 consecutive Rookie of the Month awards, at 20 years of age we should see some big things from him. For the month Peter hit .354 with 5 HR's, 15 RBI and 13 Runs scored.

Players of the Month: MarVa Division

Hitter: Abraham Thomas (Richmond Cardinals)
Abraham stood out this month with a .311 batting average, 33 hits and 10 home runs. He scored 26 times and knocked in 19.

Pitcher: Luis Gonzalez (Ellicott City Express)
Luis won all 5 of his starts for the Express in May, with a 2.78 ERA with 24 K's in 35.2 innings.

Rookie: Mauro Candelaria (Norfolk Cavaliers)
Mauro found a grove in May, winning the first monthly award for the Cav's. For the month he hit .298 with 31 hits, 4 HR's and 17 RBI.

After 2 months the divisions are still pretty tight, as the top two teams are starting to pull away from the rest. A lot of baseball left to be played, bu it looks the better teams are starting to pull away.

League Leaders
* means new leader for this month.

Delaware Division:
AVG: Fred Bishop (Wilmington Iron Pigs) .367
HR: Glen Hall (Newark Millers) 19
RBI: Angel Romero (Georgetown Sixteens) 49*
SB: Francisco Durango (Georgetown Sixteens) 24

W: Anthony Dundee (Milford Clippers)/Bruce McCann (Newark Millers) 8*
ERA: Anthony Dundee (Milford Clippers) 1.90*
K: Keith White (Milton Brewers) 96
SV: Wilson Acosta (Milton Brewers) 17*

Marva Division:
AVG: Agusto Guzman (Ocean City Tourists) .364*
HR: Abraham Thomas (Richmond Cardinals) 19*
RBI: Alberto Trujillo (Annapolis Admirals) 48*
SB: Jesus Ortiz (Annapolis Admirals) 21*

W: Don Sweetapple (Norfolk Cavaliers) 9
ERA: Bill Downey (Washington Senators) 2.60*
K: Don Sweetapple (Norfolk Cavaliers) 76
SV: Jack Casey (Ellicott City Express) 18*

The Cavaliers continue to struggle scoring runs, as they are ranked 6 (of 8) in Runs Scored with 256. On a high note they are 2nd in HR's with 65. Pitching wise we just aren't getting enough out of our starters, they aren't pitching up to their skill, sans Sweetapple. Our runs against is 6th (290) and Starters ERA ranks 6th (4.90) as well... The Defensive Effiecney rating has been solid #1 or #2 all season, currently we are at #2 with a .702. This seems to be dropping lately. Might be time to rework the offense/defensive depth charts.

Love to see the presentation in this league! Any details you can give me on the playoffs, such as numbers of teams or predictions?

What are the odds of Sweetapple winning Pitcher of the Year?

Thanks for reading along...

The season is 162 games long, and only the winner of the divisions will make the playoffs. The division winners will play a best-of-7 series, with the winner moving on to the Championship series, which is another best-of-7 series.

The preseason predictions for the playoffs were:
Milton Brewers vs. Milford Clippers
Annapolis Admirals vs. Washington Senators
Based on that I would of predicted the Admirals beating the Brewers in 5.

Currently there are no real surprises. The Clippers and the Iron Pigs, both solid pitching teams, should fight for the the division title as should the Richmond Cardinals, pitching heavy, and the Washington Senators, well balanced.

As for Sweetapple, his success has come as a surprise to everyone. He was left off of every preseason list, in face most specialists predicted Carlos Mateo to emerge as the Norfolk ace. Sweetapple leads his conference in Wins, IP and K's. Sweetapple has been bless with great run-support (6.25 RS/G), which help masks his 3.78 ERA. Keep in mind he only has 6 QS out of 12 Starts. And his WAR rating is a low 1.6, the current leader is Jarred Perry with a 2.8.

Jarred Perry (Richmond Cardinals) and Bill Downey (Washington Senators) are probably the front runners to take home the POY award.

J Perry: 5-3 2.67 ERA 0.86 WHIP 158 ERA+ 2.8 WAR 87.2 IP 4 BB 73 K
B Downey: 8-3 2.60 ERA 1.13 WHIP 162 ERA+ 2.0 WAR 83.0 IP 16 BB 54 K
Sweetapple: 9-2 3.78 ERA 1.20 WHIP 112 ERA+ 1.6 WAR 88.0 IP 20 BB 76 K

Week 10

Current Week: 4-3 (overall 29-36 9 GB 4th place)
Next Week: 3 vs Chesapeak, 3 vs Richmond
Power Ranking: 14
Fan Interest: 51
Owners Mood: Worried

Game 59
Ocean City 4, Norfolk 5
Scott Smith pitched a solid 8.0 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits. This is how we were expecting him to pitch all season... the bad news is he was pulled in the 9th complaining of stiffness in his arm... Jack Clow came in for the save (14) has Theo Petherick let the 4 run lead almost slip away. Tim Garner and Pablo Freitas both had 2 hits, Ralph Pierce added a 2-run shot (3)

Game 60
Ocean City 2, Norfolk 8
Tsuneo Sato (4-5) threw well for 7.2 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, then handed the ball over to Theo Petherick who closed the door. Patrick Shelton, must of heard he is on the trading block, blew up going 4-5 with 3 doubles and a HR (7). Tim Garner added 3 hits, including 2 doubles of his own.

Draft Update:
We received a phone call from Jack Dooley's agent saying he wasn't pleased with the amount we offered and whats us to come back with a better offer. Dooley our 3rd round pick was offered $660,000, but is demanding $1,100,000. It was told to us before the draft he would be extremely hard to sign. We up our offer to $899,000.

Game 61
Ocean City 0, Norfolk 6
Don Sweetapple wishes he could pitch against the tourists every game. Throwing a 4 hit shutout, while striking out 9, as he becomes the leagues first 10 game winner (10-2). 3 homeruns, one each by Pablo Freitas (13), Ralph Piece (4) and Julio Romero (6) paced the Cav's offense.

Injury News:
The phone call we didn't want to receive came in... after visiting with the doctors Scott Smith is done for the season. He will be out 11-12 MONTHS with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. A date for surgery hasn't be set yet. He will be immediately placed on the DL.

Draft News:
Maurice Noble our #2 pick has come back and said "Show me the money!" Asking for 1,600,000, we offered him slot at $1,130,000. I will increase the offer as we have plenty of budget space currently. The Offer: $1,301,000 (this is our final offer, if he doesn't sign we will let him go)

Game 62
Ocean City 1, Norfolk 4
Carlos Mateo (4-6) capped off the series sweep with a solid start, going 6.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9. Jack Clow threw the 9th for the his 15th save. Pablo Freitas had 2 hits, both HR's (15) and drove in 3 to lead the offense.

** We will be sad to see Ocean City go...

Draft News:
Our #1 pick overall has signed! Arturo Ramirez will be sent to Jacksonville (A) to begin his quest to the majors. At 6'5" and 17 years old he should have no problems living up to that 4* potential (** knock on wood **)

Game 63
Norfolk 3, Washington 4
Jack Clow blew his 5th save and took the loss (1-6) and is getting close to being removed from the closer role. He gave up 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th, as Karl Armstrong watched his win slip through his fingers. Karl went 6.2 innings, giving up 6 hits and 1 run. Mauro Candelaria and Jacob Chaney each had 2 hits, Chaney had a solo HR (6).

Game 64
Norfolk 0, Washington 7
Andrew Donnely (0-1), a long-reliver, took the hill in his first start, filling in for Scott Smith. Donnelly, who got the start because Mushy Martinez wasn't fully rested, threw 5.2 innings, giving up 7 runs on 10 hits and 5 walks. Pablo Freitas had 3 of the Cav's 6 hits.

Rotation News:
Jose "Mushy" Martinez was recalled and is now slotted as our #4 starter. He wasn't rested enough to go last game, but he will be for the next. Mush went 0-1 6.30 ERA in 2 previous starts for Norfolk... Mushy will be on a short leash. Jorge Serna has decent ratings and his LH, which is something our staff is missing.

Game 65
Norfolk 4, Washington 6
Tsuneo Sato (4-6), goes by "Chuckwagon" in the clubhouse, but we are thinking he should change that to "Mr Inconsistent". Sato allowed 6 runs on 6 hits over 4.2 innings. Brian Cline, who hasn't hit the ball lately, showed up to play ball going 2-4 with 2 solo shots (15).

** I was hoping that we would have some momentum going into the Washington series after sweeping Ocean City. I guess not.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pedro Morin (Dover Generals) 14-31 5 HR, 13 RBI
Marva: Virgil White (Baltimore Barons) 9-15, 3 HR, 12 RBI, 10 Runs

Power Rankings:
1) Richmond Cardinals
2) Dover Generals
3) Washington Senators
4) Milton Brewers
5) Wilmington Iron Pigs
14) Norfolk Cavaliers

Week 11

Current Week: 2-4 (overall 31-40 11 GB 4th place)
Next Week: 3 @ Wilmington, 3 vs Newark
Power Ranking: 15
Fan Interest: 51
Owners Mood: Unhappy

Offday Transactions:
Jack Clow was sitting in the clubhouse on the off day when Tony Luke pulled him aside to let him he know he was heading to Washington. The fans will miss Jack, the budget won't. Heading to Washington with Jack is 19 year-old MR Joe Kelly. Coming over to Norfolk is middle reliever Carlos Rodriquez and 20 year-old OF Bryan O'Neill. The move freed up $5,000,000 in budget money.

Theo Petherick has moved into the closer role.

Game 66
Chesapeake 3, Norfolk 6
Don Sweetapple did it again, and at this moment seems to be the only pitcher who can us a win (11-2). Don went 8 innings, allowing 3 hits and 3 runs. Theo Petherick got the save (2) pitching a perfect a 9th. Brian Cline had a perfect 3-3 day with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.

Draft News:
Jack Dooley, our 3rd round pick, has decided to break-off further negotiations and continue his education and re-enter the draft next season. Our scouts didn't see big things in Dooley's future so it might not be a bad thing.

Game 67
Chesapeake 11, Norfolk 3
Carlos Mateo (4-7) took the loss giving up 5 runs on 11 hits over 7 innings. Carlos Rodriquez had a rough outing giving up 5 runs (4 ER) in one inning of work. Jose Rodriquez (7) and Antonio Hernandez (3) each hit a HR in the losing cause.

Draft News:
Maurice Noble our #2 pick has signed on with the Cav's and will be joining our A team in Jacksonville. We are excited to have in on our club.

David Harrison, our 5th round pick, let us know he isn't happy with our $100,000 offer, he is looking for $300,000. Since we didn't sign Jack, we will go ahead and meet demand.

Game 68
Chesapeake 4, Norfolk 2
Karl Armstrong threw 6 good innings, but it was the one bad one (the 5th) that hurt him most, giving up 4 runs. Overall Karl threw 7 innings, gave up 6 hits and 4 runs. The offense stroked 8 hits, with Mauro Candelaria (HR 6) and Brian Cline each with two... Karl Boneheads morale has hit a low as he is now "Angry"

Draft News:
David Harrison jumped all over our offer and will be joining our A ball team in Jacksonville. Making it 4 out of 5 draftees that we signed.

Game 69
Richmond 2, Norfolk 1
Jose Martinez threw 8 wonderful innings, allowing 2 runs on 9 hits, but took the tough loss (0-2) as the offense sputtered once again. Brain Cline and Ralph Pierce each doubled to account for 2 of the 3 Cav's hits.

Game 70
Richmond 3, Norfolk 7
Tsuneo Sato (5-6) threw well, and was the benefactor of some good run support, holding the Cardinals to 3 runs on 5 hits over 8 innings. Pablo Freitas (16) and Maura Candelaria (7) each hit home runs, and Pablo lead the way with 3 RBI's... On a side note we beat ex-Cav Danny Rigsby, who wanted out of Norfolk. Have to say it feels good.

Game 71
Richmond 5, Norfolk 2
Don Sweetapple (11-3) can't win them all. Sweetapple threw 8 innings, giving up 10 hits and 5 runs. Pablo Freitas had 3 of the Cav's 8 hits.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Walker (Lewes Braves) 13-26 0 HR 6 RBI
MarVa: Brian Cline (Norfolk Cavaliers) 10-21 2 HR, 5 RBI

Power Rankings:
1) Annapolis Admirals
2) Richmond Cardinals
3) Georgetown Sixteens
4) Wilmington Iron Pigs
5) Milton Brewers
15) Norfolk Cavaliers

Week 12

Current Week: 1-5 (overall 32-45 13 GB 4th place)
Next Week: 3 vs Annapolis, 3 @ Ocean City
Power Ranking: 16
Fan Interest: 51
Owners Mood: Angry

Notes: The Owner Bill Parker is getting angry with the way the club is playing, and honestly I can't blame him. Rumors are starting to circulate that changes will be made. Hitting Coach Roger van Hoogewegen might be the first to go... As for me I am not happy, but content with the team. I don't want to trade off our youth to win now, just to destroy the future. We have the lowest budget and salary, so if I make through this season, we should be able to make some upgrades. The trade market has been very poor, but I will continue to shop players.

Game 72
Norfolk 7, Wilmington 6
Carlos Mateo threw 6.2 solid innings, and exited with a 7-1 lead, which the bullpen stumbled and almost gave away. Mateo got the win (5-7) giving up 5 hits and 1 run. James Gillespie gave up 3 runs in 1.2 innings and Theo Petherick gave up 2 in 2/3... Brain Cline went 4-4, to continue his hot streak, knocking in 4 runs.

Game 73
Norfolk 5, Wilmington 7
Karl Armstrong went 8 solid innings, giving up 4 runs on 7 hits, while striking out 10. But took the ND as Theo Petherick blew it in the 9th. Only able to get 1 out, Petherick gave up 4 runs on 3 hits and a walk, including a walk-off blast (1-2, BS 1). The Cav's offense slugged 3 HR's, Freitas (17), Candelaria (8) and Britt (4), and saw 3 players smack 2 hits.

Game 74
Norfolk 3, Wilmington 9
Jose Martinez just might not have what it takes to stay around with the big club, getting hit hard over 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and 6 runs to take the loss (0-3). Allen Britt and Mauro Candelaria had 2 hits a piece for the Cav's offense. Britt hit his 5th HR of the year.

Game 75
Newark 4, Norfolk 2
Tsuneo Sato threw well to get the win on most days, but when your team is only giving you 2.87 runs per game, you need to do a little better. Sato went 7.2 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits (5-7). The offense racked up 9 hits, but didn't get them at the right time leaving 7 men stranded. Patrick Shelton (8) and Pablo Freitas (18) each had a solo-hr accounting for the lone Cav's runs.

Game 76
Newark 1, Norfolk 0
Don Sweetapple threw 8.0 innings, giving up 5 hits and 1 run, a first inning 2-out HR being his only mistake, took the tough loss (11-4). The offense once again slugged 9 hits, but left 10 men on base. Pablo Freitas had 3 hits to lead the way.

Game 77
Newark 7, Norfolk 2
Carlos Mateo threw 5.1 innings before hitting the showers, down 6-0, and with the way the offense has been going lately it wasn't a good sign. Mateo took the loss (5-8) giving up 6 runs (5 ER) on 7 hits. Pablo Freitas is trying to put this offense on his shoulders, but can't do it himself, had 2 hits including his 19th HR. Mauro Candelaria added 3 hits.

Players of the Week:
Delaware: Pete MacCammon (Wilmington Iron Pigs) 11-26 2 HR, 5 RBI
MarVa: Cliff Jones (Washington Senators) 13-24 7 RBI 5 R

Power Rankings:
1) Milton Brewers
2) Washington Senators
3) Milford Clippers
4) Richmond Cardinals
5) Annapolis Admirals
16) Norfolk Cavaliers

Nice move. You don't need a $7.6M closer with declining ratings and a 4.85 ERA.

I hope your owner will be patient. He needs to let you do your job. The seeds are there.

Yeah that is what I was thinking. My only salary concerns are Alberto Hernandez and Theodore Pehterick @ $3.8 and $3.6 mil, these two are the only guys on my roster over 30.

Hopefully the owner will keep me around at least another year. I am pretty sure we are on the right track. Just need another bat, and get some consistency.

All-Star Game

This was an All-Star game to remember... The Delaware Conference jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one, thanks to a field error by Norfolks own Mauro Candelaria.... but the pitching settled down and the hitting continued. The MarVa conference took the lead in the 7th 5-4, after two homeruns, one by Annapolis Richard Taylor and the other by Washingtons Alfred East. But the MarVa bullpen gave up one in the 8th for the tie, and it would stay 5-5 till the Delaware Conference walked off on Gustavo Feliciano's second homerun of the game in the bottom of the 14th!

MarVa 5-12-1
Delaware 6-15-0
W: Francisco Tonche (Francisco threw 5 innings. I am sure the manager of Georgetown isn't too happy with that call)
L: Juan Carlos Munoz (he went the final 3 for Marva)
HR: Gustavo Feliciano (2), Roberto Villalobos, Richard Taylor, Steve Williams, Alfred East

The MVP award was given to Gustavo Feliciano (3-7 2 R, 3 RBI)

Norfolk's Stars had a mixture of performances:
Mauro Candelaria (0-7)
Pablo Freitas (3-6 1 Run)
Don Sweetapple (1.0 IP, 2 R, 1 ER/R, 1 K)
Alberto Hernandez (1.0)

Halfway Recap

The Cavaliers are starting to play better, be it the drastic lineup change or just the quality of our opponents, we still have a long way to go. As a team we are hitting a mere .246, which leads to a team having the 2nd most HR's and 5th most RBI's. I would like to see how many solo HR's this team has hit, because I am betting its close to 50%.

Pitching was supposed to be strong point, but our starters have struggled, the injury to Scott Smith didn't help, and the bullpen has just been inconsistent. The strongest point of this team has been our defense. We are one of 4 teams with a defensive efficeincy of .700+ (we are actually tied with 2 other teams @ .706), we do however have the best Zone Rating of any team in the league at +21.1.

We have weaknesses all over the lineup but a lot of budget space and prospects to work with over the next year. I would like to make a move at some point this season, but I am not sure if it will happen. The market has been slim pickings lately. We have tried to move both Theo Petherick and Alberto Hernandez, but I don't feel like I am getting enough in return. The trade deadline is coming up, so if we don't get any good deals we will just have to wait.

Front Office Information:
Budget 16th out of 16
Player Payroll 16th out of 16
