Baseball Greats mod in Steam Workshop

Baseball Greats

This file is now available on the OOTP20 Steam Workshop.

If you have ever wanted to play with the best players in history in a single league, now you can do just that. To properly create this league Davenport Translations were used as the basis for the stats that went into the editor to create the player ratings. The Davenport Translations are a translations of player statistics from every season into a modern environment. This is really the best way to use players from different eras in the same league as OOTP cannot do these translations. Instead of basing the players on their single best season, a larger sample was used. This prevents Roger Maris from ending up with the same HR rate as Babe Ruth. For positions players their best seasons totaling 5000 AB were used, for starting pitchers 5000 AB against were used, and for relief pitchers 2500 AB against were used. These values were summed with a spreadsheet and then put into the player editor.

Player Running Speed is what OOTP uses to control how often players attempt to steal a base. This rating was based on the Davenport Translation of their stolen bases per their times reaching first base.

Stealing Ability is what OOTP uses to control stolen base success rate. This rating was translated from the Davenport Translation of their stolen base success percentage.

Baserunning Ability was created from the baseball reference page of each player that has their Extra Bases Taken percentage.

Sacrifice Bunting is the player sacrifices per 1000 AB from their real statistics.

Pitching Stamina for starting pitchers was based on their IP/GS for their career divided by the league rate during their career and then multiplied by 162, and for relief pitchers this was their IP/RA multiples by 9.

Holding Runners is used to influence whether a player will attempt to steal against a pitcher and using baseball reference data this rating was made.

Wild Pitches per 550 BF was calculated for each pitcher based on their career totals.

Groundout % was taken from baseball reference for each pitcher and then normalized to OOTP. The editor in OOTP suggests 54% as average. The GO/AO ratio for a pitcher first had to be converted to a percentage and compared with the league average during their career, these values were divided and then normalized to 54 as the average.

Defensive Ratings were custom based on the career fielding stats of a player. The Infield and Outfield Error rating was based on the player error rate against the league error rate during their career. The errors were factored out of their Range ratings. Outfield Arm is based on assists per inning vs the league average for each outfield position, then an adjustment was made for LF and RF from there. Catcher Ability is based on Errors and PB per inning and Catcher Arm is a translation of the caught stealing percentage compared to the league average.

The file contains 32 teams. The 30 major league teams plus the Pionners, a team of 19th century players, and the Monarchs, a team of Negro League players and two Japanese players.

Each team has at least three catchers and two players at the other positions and at least 18 pitchers.

There are a total of 1291 players.

Every player in the hall of fame.

Every position player with at least 2000 H or 250 HR

Every pitcher with at least 150 W (200 for 19th century) or 200 SV or 700 G.

The default season for the league is 2009, but since the game file starts in January you can still change this to a different season. To use a different season, select the season you want in the settings and then check the first box that says Lock League Totals stats (if you don’t check that box the game will switch this to 2009 again when the season begins).
There are four divisions per league arranged for competitive balance as best as possible. The strongest teams are found in Division 1 and the weakest in Division 4. This allows for the weaker teams to still win a division.

If you want to do a draft you can even add up to 8 more teams as there are enough players for 40 teams.

Is there a way to import the players into a standard game, or a custom historical league?

Thanks for making the effort. It's a pain editing all the historical players you import.
