Roger Craig Reaches Age 90
RHP - Roger Craig - pictured as a Phillie in 1966, his final major leagues campaign, but better known as a Brooklyn Dodger and New York Met, or as the skipper of the San Francisco Giants, turned 90 years of age on February 17. He is the 73rd former living player who is at least 90 years of age at present, according to baseball-almanac.com and wikipedia.org.
He had two 20 loss seasons with the New York Mets, including in their inaugural year of 1962, a team that nearly 60 years later is still reputed by many to be the worst team ever and certainly is among the two or three worst teams of the last 75 years of Post-World War Two Major Leagues Baseball. Craig was 74-98 as as a pitcher, but that included 10-24 and 5-22 marks for the hapless Mets in their first two years of National League competition. Craig was 49-38 in seven years with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers (1955-1961). Craig managed 10 years in the major leagues for the 1978 & 1979 San Diego Padres and he enjoyed an eight year run with the San Francisco Giants (1985-1992), where his Giants teams won the NL West title under his guidance in 1987 and 1989.. Overall his managerial record just succeeded in passing the break-even point. His final managerial record for 10 years was 738-737. |

Johnny Antonelli (1930-2020) Five -time all-star LHP
Star Giants LHP Johnny Antonelli passed away on February 28 about six weeks before his 90th birthday. He was a five-time National League
all-star who won 20 games twice and also enjoyed a 19 win season. Antonelli was 126-110 lifetime in a big leagues career that dated from 1948 to 1961, except for two years of military service in 1951 and 1952. He began his career as a Boston/Milwaukee Brave "Bonus Baby". Antonelli came to the NY Giants in February 1954 in a trade for Bobby Thomson, and it was with the Giants in New York and later in San Francisco where Antonelli had his greatest success. After seven years with the Giants Antonelli pitched for the 1961 Cleveland Indians and that turned out to be his final stop in the major leagues. Antonelli retired, perhaps prematurely, at the age of 32. |

Crandall's Career Stops: 1949-1950: Boston Braves; 1951-1952: U.S. Military Service; 1953-1963: Milwaukee Braves; 1964: San Francisco Giants; 1965: Pittsburgh Pirates; 1966: Cleveland Indians. 2020 Phillies Wall Of Fame choice is Manny Trillo
March 7, 2020: The Philadelphia Phillies announced today that their choice for 2020 to the Phillies Wall Of Fame is Manny Trillo. Trillo hit .277 in his four seasons (1979-1982) with the Phillies and he hit .294 on their first World Championship team of 1980, while playing great defense as a Second Baseman. The diminutive, Venezuelan was a sparkplug on that championship team providing the Phils with both clutch hitting and highlight reel fielding excellence. He played 1,780 games in a 17 year MLB career (1973-1989) and made all-star teams in both leagues: N.L: 1977 Cubs and 1981 & 1982 Phillies and A.L. 1983 Indians. The Wall Of Fame of plaques of the electees is located just to the left of straightaway Center Field in Citizens Bank Park.
Trillo is 69 years of age (birthdate: Christmas Day, 1950). The Phillies team Hall of Fame, their "The Phillies Wall Of Fame" was inaugurated in 1978 (Robin Roberts was the first selection) and one player has been elected every year since. Some selections to the Phillies Wall Of Fame include: 1979: Richie Ashburn; 1980: Chuck Klein; 1981: Grover Alexander; 1982: Del Ennis; 1984: Jim Bunning. 1989: Steve Carlton. 1990: Mike Schmidt; 1991: Larry Bowa; 1993: Curt Simmons; 1994: Richie 'Dick' Allen; 1995: Willie 'Puddin Head' Jones; 1997: Johnny Callison; 1998:Greg Luzinski; 2002: Tony Taylor. 2005: Bob Boone; 2011: John Kruk; 2012: Mike Lieberthal; 2013: Curt Schilling: 2015: Pat Burrell; 2016: Jim Thome. 2018: Roy Halladay and 2019: Bobby Abreu. |

Livan Hernandez: At 178-177 lifetime, he quit while he was ahead.
Cuban immigrant, Livan Hernandez had a relatively high earned run average, (well over 4.00) but his managers loved his durability. He was one of the top "Innings Eaters" of his day, notching 50 Complete Games, in an era where the CG had almost become extinct. Overalll he had 1,976 strikeouts in 3,189 inning Pitched, challenging the likes of Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson and Andy Pettitte for the Innings Pitched leadership of the 2000-2009 decade.
Hernandez is depicted here pitching for the Montreal Expos in 2004, their last year of existence before moving to become the Washington Nationals the following year. The card is an '04 Topps Heritage card, which based their retro design on that of the of the original 1955 Topps set. Hernandez led the National League three time in Innings Pitched in his 16-year career (1997-2012). His 9-3 record as the National League runner-up for the Rookie Of The year award was indispensable in the Florida Marlins push to secure the Wild Card and eventually triumph in the 1997 World Series over the Cleveland Indians. Hernandez's 17-11 record for the 2000 San Francisco Giants was his personal best in Wins. By the end of the 2011 season, however, his lifetime record had faded to 174-176, but Hernandez put together a good final season in 2012 as a reliever at age 37 to register a 4-1 record to get back over the .500 mark at 178-177. Then rather smartly on his part, he quit while he was ahead to forever remain a winning pitcher, even if it was by the slimmest of margins - one game over .500, with a career winning percentage of .501.. Don Robertson - 1954 Cubs outfielder - His death has just been reported several years late.
Despite baseball-almanac.com and wikipedia.org having oldest living MLB players lists and keeping us up to date on the passing of previous ballplayers, occasionally a name falls through the cracks. Such is the case of 1954 Chicago Cubs outfielder, Don Robertson. You could say his death was just as unheralded as his baseball career. Robertson appeared in 6 games with the '54 Cubbies and failed to register a basehit. Until this week he had been listed as being among the 100 oldest living MLB players, (#85 in age to be exact) but it turned out that his death had occurred in 2014, at the age of 84 and somehow in this digital information society his death had gone unreported for more than half a decade.
Does anyone have a photo of Robertson to share with this forum or can you refer me to a previous posting? |
