Ford coming off an injury that side lined him most of the 1961 season pitched seven innings and recorded seven strike outs and got a no decision in his appearance. The Yankee's started the scoring in the second inning when catcher Elston Howard hit a line drive homer off Estrada. In the top of the third Orioles left fielder Earl Robinson doubled and was driven home on a single by Baltimore’s first baseman Jim Gentile. Then in the top of the sixth inning Don Lock reached base on an error by Yankees shortstop Tony Kubek and came home on a double by second baseman Tom Wright making the score 2-1 Baltimore. In the top of the seventh, Robinson singled and reached second on a sac bunt by Don Jenkins. Robinson then took third on a wild pitch by Ford and then scored on a Howard passed ball making the score now 3-1 in favor of the Birds. In the bottom half of the eighth Bobby Richardson reached first on an error by second baseman Ron Hansen who pinch hit for Wright. Tony Kubek then singled to right scoring Richardson now the score was 3-2 Baltimore. In the bottom of the ninth Houk sent rookie Tom Tresh up to pinch hit for Clete Boyer and the switch hitting infielder took a Hoyt Wilhelm pitch into the right field porch tie up the game. Then the top of the tenth Gentile took a Ryne Duren fastball into the upper deck in right to give the O’s the lead. The Yankee’s came back in the bottom of the tenth. Mickey Mantle doubled to right and came home on a Moose Skowron double to left to tie up the game. Now the drama unfolds. Tresh making his second plate appearance in the game took Wilhelm deep again to right with a walk off home run to win the game for the Yankee’s. Relief pitcher Ryne Duren picked up the win and Wilhelm was tagged with the loss. In a post game interview manager Ralph Houk was asked, "Do you think the Yankee's can repeat as champions?", Ralph stated "well it will be tough a lot of clubs have made improvements" and "we hope that Whitey can have a great season". The Yankee's now hit the road for for a three game series in Detroit against the Tigers starting on April 13. |

YANKS 4 ½ GAMES OUT AT THE END OF APRIL YANKEES IN 9th PLACE By Jim Dandy- Staff Writer April 30, 1962 We are heading into the month of May and the Yankee’s find themselves 9 and ½ games out of first and in ninth place in the AL with a record of 7-10. The Angels have surprised everyone by jumping out to a record of 12-6 leading the league. As we go into May the Yankee bats are starting to wake up. Mickey Mantle took over a week to hit his first homer of the season. He broke out his slump in a big way by blasting two homers against Washington in one game. He is now up to 4 but trailing league leading home run hitter Woodie Held of the Indians. Held was just named the AL Batter for April with a .382 batting average to go along with 7 homers, 18 RBI’s and 20 runs scored. The one bright spot for the Yanks is the pitching of Whitey Ford. Ford has a 2-1 record and 15 strikeouts. Frank Lary the new kid on the team has a 1-3 record with 18 strikeouts. Manager Ralph Houk was given the news that Yogi Berra will be out for 3 weeks with a strained finger. His replacement rookie Joe Pepitone called up to fill in for Berra will be out for about 2 weeks. At a practice session he was racing a fellow teammate an suffered a oblique strain. A reporter asked Joe about his injury and Pepitone said “ it is just one of those rookie mistakes” and “I hope to be fit to play soon” In other news around the league, pitcher Don Mossi of the Tigers was named AL Pitcher of the month of April. So far this season Don has a record of 3-0 and 19 strikeouts an a ERA of 1.10 in 32.2 innings. Yankee manager Houk when asked about his teams performance so far stated “ It is still early and we still have a lot of baseball still to be played”. |

Trouble for my 1960's replay. My computer may has a virus and may lose all my files. I am kicking myself for not backing them up. I am having the computer looked at this week. I hope they can save my replay files.
