Sid (Straight Jacket) Peaks was an on-again off-again slugger from Louisville. Born 1925. Fought from 1946 to 1958. Record: 43-19-0 (36). Peaks fought two exhibitions with Joe Louis--in October 1947 and February 1950. Beat Lee Q. Murray (twice), Nate Bolden, Johnny Shkor, the Alabama Kid, Ponce DeLeon, and Bob Garner. Split with Jimmy Bivins, Elza Thompson, and Ernie Cab. Lost to Colion Chaney (twice), Rusty Payne (twice), Elmer (Violent) Ray, Bert Whitehurst, John Holman, Bob Baker (twice), Harold Johnson, and Ernie Terrell. I can't locate a photo of him.

Jewish Bomber
Arnie Brower, a.k.a. "the Jewish bomber." Born 1940. Fought from 1961 to 1975. Record: 26-6-2 (17). Trained by Charley Goldman.
Brower was an anomaly in the sixties boxing world. A graduate of the University of Connecticut with a degree in zoology, he was "clean-cut" and "well-spoken," and "made no secret of the fact that once his sporting career was over he planned on embarking on more cerebral pursuits," according to Robert Mladnich of The Sweet Science. Brower upset Dick Richardson in July 1962, but was upset in turn by Tom McNeeley at the Boston Garden in February 1965. Because he was a Jewish boxer in New York, though, he was a gate attraction even after the loss to McNeeley ended his hopes of becoming a contender. Nearly two decades after retirement, Brower became homeless and a crack addict. A photo of him is here. (As always, if someone else has already rated Brower, please forgive the duplication of effort. I used the site's search engine, but could turn up no mention of him.)

Willie Bean
L.A. light heavy. Native of Houston. Born 1928. Fought from 1946 to 1956. Record: 42-27-4 (22).
Beat Al Hoosman, Rusty Payne (twice), Tiger Ted Lowry, Bill Petersen, Pat Comiskey, Frank Buford (twice), Turkey Thompson, and Frankie Daniels. Lost to Rusty Payne, Jimmy Bivins (three times), John Holman, Frank Buford, Clarence Henry, Kid Riviera, Leonard Morrow, Oakland Billy Smith, Rex Layne, Archie Moore, Howard King, and Duke Sabedong. Joe Rein writes: "In recalling the Moore fight, Bean said he'd been warned over and over again by his trainer [George Jerome] not to be suckered into bending and throwing a left hook at what looked like an unprotected, jagged scar on Moore's midsection. But he went for it anyway, and Moore dropped a short right over the top. He never saw it. 'When I got up, I thought I was walking on razor blades.'" Moore kayoed Bean in the fifth round in April 1956. Bean is the author of perhaps the most succinct defense of boxing: "They was fighting when Jesus came the first time," he once said, "and they'll be fighting when he comes again."
