You'll probably look at his ratings and say Rocco your nuts.
No...really...for this forum..you would be called "punch drunk".

Thanks for the fighter. It is interesting how the different factors can be manipulated to get a fighter to perform as he did in "real life". Shows how the Trunzos have put a lot of work into the various factors. This guy has pretty good power but low punches landed and low counter punching...in a quick look I don't see any fighters in the database with factors as low as this guy-24 & 26!

Getting back on track here with the Gerhard Zech replay. Actually got 5 bouts in a row with opponents that we have in the game now so I've gone ahead and played through all 5 and will give you the results here.......

Gerhard Zech's 30th fight 1964-03-06, Madison Square Garden

Gerhard Zech (28-1-0) vs Ernie Terrell (32-4-0)
This will actually be Zech's first and only fight outside of Europe! Its only his 2nd outside of Germany for that matter. We all know about Ernie Terrell, so no introduction needed. A scheduled 10 round fight that ended in a 10 round decision loss for Gerhard.

A wild fight that went back and forth with a wild finish in our replay! Terrell puts Zech down for a 6 count in the 10th round. AT that point, even though Zech made it back up to finish the round, I thought Terrell had it won. But what happens?! A MAJORITY DRAW!! J1 scores it 95-95, J2 scores 97-93 Terrell, J3 scores 95-95 Draw. I couldn't believe it. My first draw in this replay and it's an MD against Terrell!

Next up Gerhard Zech's 31st fight 1964-05-08, Berlin, Germany

Zech (28-1-1) vs Federico Friso (23-27-7)

This is Friso's last career fight. Zech won an 8 round decision in this fight in '64.
In the replay, Zech controls the fight pretty much from start to finish except for a suprise for seconds in the 5th when Friso drops Zech for a 7 count. It's the only time either fighter goes down.
Gerhard wins a UD 78-73, 78-73, 78-73.

Gerhard Zech's 32nd fight 1964-11-14, Dortmund, Germany

Zech (29-1-1) vs Zora Folley (67-7-4)

Folley, a top ranked HW for much of the 50's and 60's is in the limelight of his career, though he'll put up a few more bouts after this one with Zech. Back in 64, Folley came up with a big victory, KO'ing the German in the 4th round!

In our replay, of this scheduled 10 round fight, Gerhard first puts Folley down for a 6 count in the 3rd round. Zech is not having too much trouble winning the first 6 rounds when suddenly Folley puts Zech to the canvas for a 9 count! Zech survives that and comes back in the 8th. With a big hook, he opens up a gash over Folley's right eye and then at the 0:55 mark of the 8th, the ref ends it for a TKO win for Zech!

Gerhard Zech's 33rd fight 1965-01-22, Frankfurt, Germany

Zech (30-1-1) vs Wim Snoek (47-23-4)

Snoek, the Dutch HW Champion in the 60's, appeared overmatched in this fight. Gerhard KO'd Snoek in the 8th round in 1965.
In our replay(scheduled it 10 rounds), Snoek started out fast to take an advantage after the 1st round. Things were even in the 2nd. After that, Gerhard quit fooling around and took control. Snoek goes down for a 6 count in the 7th. Then in the 9th, Snoek goes down again for a 9 count early in the round. The fight then is stopped at the 2:53 mark for a TKO victory for Zech.

Gerhard Zech's 34th fight 1965-03-06, Hannover, Germany

Zech (31-1-1) vs Joe Bygraves (42-26-1)

Bygraves after putting up a lot of victories in the early part of his career is going into the down swing of the career when he's fighting a good number of the top HW's around and not with a lot of success. In 1965 these two go a full 10 round scheduled fight with Zech coming out with the decision win.

In our replay, not much Bygraves can do as he goes down for a 6 count in the 4th and then in the 6th, Gerhard first decks Bygraves for an 8 count, Joe gets up but is pretty much finished as Gerhard gives him a big right hand and puts Joe out for good with a KO finish at the 2:24 mark of the 6th round.

With that quick flurry of fights completed a quick recap of Zech's record....

In real life up to this time, Gerhard was 30-3-1 with 12 KO's and 7 TKO's to his record.

In our replay, he's 32-1-1 with 9 KO's and 13 TKO's. Close numbers. After a couple of journeymens coming up in his next 2 fights, we'll begin to see him up against some much tougher competition.

Next up will be a Joe Shelton 13-14-2(8 KO) liftetime. Biggest fights in Shelton's career are 2 against Gerhard, one with Mariano Echevarria and a couple against Hubert Hilton as far as his most recognizable opponents.

After that comes Dave Bailey who is 18-20-3 (11KO) career. A guy with a little bit of punch, but looks to go down himself a bit. Bailey's opponents include Cleveland Williams, Eddie Machen, George Chuvalo, Karl Mildenberger, Zech, Buddy Turman, Sonny Liston, Peter Weiland, Jurgen Blin.

So a couple of new HW's I'll start working on that have some interesting looks to them.

See you next time in Frankfurt, Germany on May 14th, 1965 for Gerhard Zech (32-1-1) vs Joe Shelton (8-7-2).

Zech should be 4th or 5th in the world by now. Maybe he should skip Shelton and Bailey and go straight to Mildenberger.

The Terrell and Folley results indicate Zech may be rated a bit high -- some repeats of those bouts may be in order eventually.

The Norton Project

Hi Guys,

Inspired by Rocco, I've decided to replay the career of a boxer with the intent of rating some unrated fighters. In my case I wanted to use the career of a well known boxer because I am not the most knowledgable boxing fan going around, so I chose Ken Norton.

Norton's First Fight

Grady Brazell
Fought 3 fights, 1-2-0 (0)

Neither Niblett or Flowers was in database, so I will use Norton in the Beginning stage and test him in 10 lots of 1000 bouts and in 10 test of 3 fights against Rating 1 opponents.

Brazell's Fights

1967-11-14 Ken Norton 0-0-0 L KO 5
1967-10-28 George Flowers 3-0-0 W PTS 4
1967-08-15 170 Frank Niblett 169 13-27-9 L TKO 4

Look forward to the Norton replay Gunsmoke. I've enjoyed doing Zech and working my way across these new fighters. I intend to do another one after I get done with Zech. Not sure who yet.

I'm going to go on through and do the complete Zech career just as he fought it.

You may be right Jabbo as far as him being a bit rated high. I'm going to wait and hold judgement until I finish the replay and then probably do some "mass replay" of his entire schedule over a few times to see what happens. In doing these simulations of hundreds of fights to rate guys, I've found that it's difficult if near impossible to get a guy to replicate his career to a T every time you sim. Just the random chances that go on in simmulating the fights and the fact that when I simulate say 50 fights for someone, I'll use one set of fighters that the game selects for maybe 2 cycles and then select 50 more and so on. So that random picking of the opponents gets changed and affects the sims.

When I tweek a guy I hope that over several hundred bouts or so I'll get his "career" number of fights to average out in the end to what his real record was. So If I take Zech's career after I get done with the replay, and sim his career a few times I expect some replays he'll do a little better then career, some a little worse and some right around the career numbers of wins/losses/Ko's/and times he's stopped. I'll tweek them then if need be to get that overall average.

I really feel though even though you get a guy rated to what you feel is close to what it should be, you may very well have done so to get him to "average out" over a number of replays, but, I think just the randomizing results of the game play will give you some variety of results.

Exactly what I think, Rocco. Sometimes folks disagree with ratings, but they're welcome to adjust them as they see fit. The behind-the-scenes 100-plus test bouts get you to an average, but the random factors programmed into the game make it almost impossible to get the perfect replay. You just get as close as you can and enjoy the results! Keep up the good work, Rocco.

Gunsmoke, Norton is one of my all-time favorites. Really looking forward to following along and adding his opponents as you create them. Good luck, and have fun!

Cool Alexander Zolkin

Someone asked for Alexander Zolkin a while back, and I promised to rate him when I got some time. Here he is.

Zolkin was Russian born and fought out of Ohio. He was 28-3-1 with 18 KOs from 1990 to 2000. He was an NABF heavyweight champion.

The big, 245-pound southpaw had an 82-inch reach. He was 8-2-1 against fighters rated in the game. He beat Quick Tillis, Rickey Parkey, Frankie Swindell, Art Tucker, Truth Williams, Bert Cooper, Michael Greer, Tony Tubbs, David Jaco, J.B. Williamson and Anthony Willis.

Losses came to Henry Akinwande by KO, Tubbs by decision, and to Mike Hunter in a bout where Zolkin lost two points for low blows. The draw was in his final fight with Eliecer Castillo.

Thanks for Zolkin, Mark. I was the guy asking for him. I am building a universe t\of the top 150 heavyweights of my lifetime (1960-present). I am determining who qualifies by what I believe is a unique methodology.

I started with my top 20 heavyweights of the era, chosen subjectively. I believe the top 11 would be consensus choices. The others may spur some argument, but their choice is not essential, as all those who would arguable be included above them will eventually be selected. Then, I expand the universe to include any fighter who has beatn or drawn with any of the top 20. Those fighters are then added, and the list builds from there...

Zolkin qualifies for selection, based on his wins over Williams, Cooper and Tubbs.

So I appreciate the addition very much.

Glad to help, Bob. Interesting concept. Sounds like a well thought out process. Good luck with it, and keep us posted.

Norton Project Continued

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the encouragement Vista.

The next pair of Norton opponents have been rated and tested as Norton continues his early career odyssey through the ranks of the west coast heavyweights, including Jimmy Gilmore the first non 1 rated opponent (though only his chin gets him a two ). Well on to the main event....

The Third Fight

Dutra looks like Norton's first credible opponent with an imposing 7-0-0 (7) record when he fights Norton with all except one of his KO's are in the first or second round. The fight before Norton was against fellow Norton opponent Sam Wyatt which ended in a 3rd round KO win for Dutra. He would loose to Norton by KO and his arua was vaporised which led him loosing his next two fights by KO before meandering his way to a short gloryless career.

None of the fighters before or after Wyatt and Norton are in the game. His career finished in 1973 though he came back for one bout in 1980 which he lost a Technical Decision from an accidental headbut.

Dutra's Fights:

1980-07-26 Len Lawson 4-3-1 L TD 4
1973-04-05 Bob Stewart 1-0-0 L PTS 6
1971-05-25 Jimmy Boyde 6-3-2 W TKO 5
1969-01-30 Andy Nacosti 5-4-1 L KO 4
1968-07-06 Jimmy Gilmore 2-6-0 L KO 5
1968-02-06 Ken Norton 2-0-0 L KO 3
1967-12-13 Sam Wyatt 4-5-2 W KO 3
1967-10-23 Jimmy Murray 0-0-0 W KO 2
1967-10-02 Lee Estes 1-2-0 W KO 2
1967-07-12 Frank Davis 0-7-0 W KO 2
1967-06-26 Gene Turner 2-3-0 W KO 1
1967-05-01 Frank Davis 0-6-0 W KO 1
1967-03-27 Larry Pendleton 0-1-0 W KO 1

The Fourth Fight

Jimmy Gilmore 5-17-0 (4)

Gilmore was a mediocre 2-4-0 (2) when he fights Norton (Norton by KO in the 7th). He fights Sam Wyatt and Mac Foster in his first two fights (looses to Wyatt on points, looses to Foster by 3rd round KO), also fights Harold Dutra two fights after Norton and wins with a KO in the fifth. He fights for the California HW crown in '68 but otherwise he looks like he is a good opponent rather than a particularly capable boxer, though would worry some with his reasonable power.

Gilmore's Fights:

1975-11-26 Oliver Philipps 0-0-0 L PTS 6
1975-10-10 Jody Ballard 21-3-0 L PTS 10
1975-10-01 Jody Ballard 20-3-0 L PTS 8
1975-02-11 Leroy Jones 11-0-0 L PTS 8
1974-07-16 Henry Clark 29-9-3 L KO 4
1974-07-02 Leroy Jones 6-0-0 L PTS 8
1969-05-19 Gary Bates 17-9-2 W PTS 6
1969-03-25 Robie Harris 0-4-1 L PTS 10
1969-02-20 Andy Nacosti 6-4-1 L PTS 6
1969-01-21 Ray (Junior) Ellis 4-7-0 L KO 1
1969-01-01 Jimmy Young 0-0-0 L PTS 4
1968-09-26 Henry Clark 15-4-2 L PTS 10 (California State Heavyweight Title Fight)
1968-08-20 Cornell Nolan 3-0-0 W KO 9
1968-07-06 Harold Dutra 7-1-0 W KO 5
1968-05-23 Bob Francis 8-0-0 L PTS 4
1968-03-26 Ken Norton 3-0-0 L KO 7
1967-10-30 Bob Francis 3-0-0 L PTS 5
1967-03-27 Gus Lewis 0-1-0 L PTS 6
1967-03-13 JT Fields 0-0-0 W KO 2
1967-02-27 Mark White 1-0-0 W KO 2
1966-11-28 Mac Foster 0-0-0 L KO 3
1966-10-17 Sam Wyatt 2-3-2 L PTS 6

Fascinating. Not only did Wyatt, Dutra, and Gilmore all get knocked out by Norton, they also all fought each other. Wyatt beat Gilmore who beat Dutra who beat Wyatt. That would suggest they're pretty evenly matched and that Norton is being brought along in a deliberate fashion.

One thing I found amusing is to look at this from the view point of Grady Brazell. Imagine a conversation between Brazell and his manager:

"Don't worry, kid. Lots of good fighters lose their first fight. You won your 2nd one, and now I've found you a guy that never fought before for you to beat." No wonder he decided after he fought Norton that he should find another career. He's probably telling his grandchildren right now that he was in the ring with Ken Norton.

Not only fascinating but it made them hella hard to rate, till I realised ( ) that Wyatt was in his prime while Gilmore was in his first fight then it all kinda fell into place.

But this will be a theme of Norton's first couple of years in the professional ranks, the next Norton opponent is Wayne Kindred who also fought the sixth Norton opponent Cornell Nolan who also fought Jimmy Gilmore the fight before Norton put him into retirement and on and on.

Here is a fighter that I haven't seen rated yet, This guy always seemed to capture my imagination , probably just the name. I went to the library and did research as much as I could. Drew lots of resources from Jack Johnson's words on him and his description as an opponent. Though Johnson had a dismissive quality of almost all his oppenents. I am not able to figure out the format that everyone is putting the rated fighters in . Hopefully I'll figure it out. So I apologize for the long hand.
John "Klondike" Haines. (Have seen it spelled Haynes as well)
most people just called him
Klondike.

Born. ? my best guess is 1876 from Jack Johnsons desription of age.

Died ?
1898-1909 22-12-4 (12) fought Jack Johnson several times as well as Frank Childs All had ties to Texas. Fought other good fighters seemed to be sort of an effective trial horse for the times.
Especially for the other Good Black fighters.

I'm going to call him a Slugger unless you say that's wrong. Thanks for rating him.

Gerhard Zech's 35th fight.... 1965-05-15 Frankfurt, Germany

Gerhard Zech (32-1-1) vs Joe Shelton (8-7-2)

Joe Shelton - 1 Overall Rating
Nationality- United States
b.
d.
Career, 1960-72
BoxRec. 028390
Record 13 wins / 14 losses / 2 draws / 8 KO

Shelton managed wins over Dick Hall(36-9-3,16KO) a Southpaw journeyman who compiled a nice looking career who's rated in the game, and an 8 round decision over Mariano Echevarria(37-55-11,14KO) who was the Spanish HW Title holder on various occassions from the late 50's on thru into the early 70's. The rest of his wins were against guys who didn't amount to much.

Shelton's losses included two to Gerhard Zech and two against Hubert Hilton, a fellow who looked to pack a decent punch who's career started out 13-1-2 with two wins against Shelton and wins also against Roberto Davila, Johnny Prescott, and Jack Bodell. Hilton is an interesting looking HW. There happens to be a picture of him in my 1970 Ring Record Book. I think I'm going to give him a try rating. I think he'd be an nice addition to the game.

Shelton also had an 8 round draw with Billy Daniels. He also lost against Vittorio Saraudi(27-3-2,15KO) who was the Italian LHW Title holder from 1965-69, and Bert Whitehurst(32-26-6,16KO), a journeyman HW from the 50's to early 60's who fought a number of the "name" heavyweights of the period.

Shelton would appear to have a decent punch with a modest chin. I simmed him agains 1-3 HW's for results comparison to his record. He was stopped 5 times in his career.

An interesting thing I discovered along the way to setting up Shelton that leads me to a question maybe someone else can answer and confirm. I happened to look in my battered up copy of the 1970 Ring Record Book just to see if any wild chance there was a picture of Shelton. No picture, but what I do find is that he's listed in the book as Joe Sheldon, not Shelton! Now that jives with his alias shown in BoxRec. Shotgun Sheldon. I wondered why he'd be called that with the last name Shelton. I looked around a little bit on the web to see if I could find any reference to Joe to confirm Shelton or Sheldon. All I found was on Cyber Zone Boxing they had a bio on Hubert Hilton and in his record they list Shelton as Shelton.

Does anyone else have any publications from that time period that would confirm Shelton or Sheldon?

Zech must have decided to fight Shelton along with Dave Bailey later on in 1965 to keep himself in prime shape or something before his big fight in November 1965 against Karl Mildenberger for the European HW Title.
Anyway, in this scheduled 8 round affair with Shelton, the American manages to go the full distance with Gerhard before bowing to a decision loss to the German.
In my replay, a bit different results. The rounds are all close, but Gerhard methodically administers a beating to Shelton such the referee stopped it at 2:58 of the 5th round for a TKO win for Gerhard upping his record here in our replay to 33-1-1.

Next up will be Dave Bailey who I happened to notice he is in fact rated in the game already!

So come see us soon in Hamburg, Germany for the bout between...
Gerhard Zech(33-1-1) vs Dave Bailey(14-14-3)

Here's his import file if you wish to add Shelton to your files...
