San Jose Sharks - A teal and black odyssey

Pro Hockey Comes to the Bay Area
8/25/1990 12.35 PST

The NHL announced this morning, at a press conference in City Hall, that there will be pro hockey in the bay area as soon as 1991. Local billionaire Mike McKeown, of McKeown Chemicals, heads up the small ownership group out of San Fransisco.

Eager to get started, the new owner has already begun shortlisting candidates to take over his team. “We’ve consulted experts and existing league executives as to whom we should contact.” explained McKeown. “We want someone young and full of fresh ideas. Expansion is a difficult journey and sometimes it is best to find someone who can grow with the team.”

The team, not named as of yet, will take up residence in the Cow Palace to begin the season in 1991. A more permanent home for the team is currently being planned and should be able to host the team in a few more years.

Former bay-area pro hockey star Dennis Maruk, who holds the California Seals goal scoring record, was on hand to give his assessment. “I was just a young rookie when I played here last. It was an exciting time and it’s too bad that (the team) didn’t have more success. I hope this new group has more success then we did”.

Maruk spent only one season with the Seals before moving on with the team to Cleveland and later Minnesota. “A lot of things were up in the air at that time. I think hockey was still too new for the Bay Area and also for Cleveland. We were lucky to find a home in Minnesota.”

When asked what advice he could give to the new owner and pending new General Manager, Maruk said that the new team had to make Hockey fun. “You have to bring a great product to the rink every night, wether that be with goals, hits or fights”.

The addition of a new team will significantly affect division alignment and travel times for other teams in the league and the area. LA Kings newly acquired superstar Wayne Gretzky commented “It is exciting to welcome another team to California. Having another franchise in the same time-zone has so many positives for the players, other teams and the state of hockey as a whole”.

The new General Manager, Coach, and staff will be announced in the coming months, with a new team name and logo.

New Coach, GM and Name for Hockey Franchise
15/6/1991 13.05 PST

A new coach, GM and team name have been announced for the expansion hockey franchise in San Jose. The San Jose Sharks will hit the ice for the 1991 season headed by Coach and General Manager Dave Fyvie.

“It is truly a great honour and responsibility to be given this chance” exclaimed Dave Fyvie, originally from Naperville Illinois.

Team Majority Owner Michael McKeown made the announcement along with the new team name and logo. “It’s an exciting day. I have the best job today, (I) feel like Santa Claus.”

The Sharks were picked from over a thousand names nominated by local school children. The name and logo were designed in secret over the winter. Amongst the finalists were The Predators, Mermaids, Tremors, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and The Barton Finks indicating the level of maturity and influence of recent box-office movies in the proposed names.

Dave Fyvie and the Sharks begin the long climb towards the expansion draft and entry draft slated to take place in early July. “We’ll know what we’ll have to work with roster wise, in a few weeks”. Fyvie stated. “Obviously we’re interested in putting the best product we can on the ice.”

Asked what stood out for McKeown when looking at Fyvie: “His vision for the future for this team is what stood out. He wants to build this team on three pillars of excellence: Speed, Character and Hockey Sense.”

NHL great Gordie Howe was on hand to debut the new team’s logo and jersey. “I honestly wish the new team all the luck in the world. Hockey is a wonderful game and deserves to be shared throughout the world”.

Mr Hockey also had some advice for the new Coach and GM. “When the going gets tough, and it will for an expansion club, keep everything in perspective. It’s only a game after all.” With that said, the Hockey legend pulled on the very first teal and silver jersey over his head and smiled for the cameras.

The Sharks are scheduled to play their first regular season game in early October, following a short training camp and pre-season. All home games will be at the Cow Palace.

5 goalies and 18 skaters were selected by the new San Jose hockey team today marking the team’s first ever roster. Amongst the various players, some names may be familiar to local hockey fans. Former Los Angeles Kings goaltender Glenn Healy (pictured) headlined the cast of young and old players that are to call San Jose their new home.

“It’s exciting to come back and play in California.” Said the 29 year old Healy from his summer home in Pickering Ontario. “I’ve spoken to a few of the guys and we’re all ready to finish up the off-season and drop the puck.”

The full list of draft picks is below:

The NHL entry draft is set to begin in 2 days, making it another opportunity for GM Fyvie and his team to add to this small, but growing, roster.

Sharks draft D-man first overall
7/3/1991 15.05 EST

With the first overall pick in their inaugural draft, The San Jose Sharks picked Kamloops Blazer stand-out defencemen Scott Niedermayer.

Considered one of the deepest first rounds in recent memory, the Sharks front office gathered at the podium in Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium and selected Niedermayer over the consensus first overall pick Eric Lindros.

“For us it was an easy decision” GM Fyvie said. “We liked Lindros and Forsberg but thought neither player was as durable, dependable and dangerous in all areas of the ice as Niedermayer”.

It was an unusual opening day as Lindros, the media’s favourite to go first, lasted until the 4th selection, by the Quebec Nordiques. Philadelphia and Vancouver both passed over the Oshawa Generals’ star picking Rucchin and Russian sniper Pavel Bure respectively.

An unnamed source from the Vancouver camp said that a lot of teams had reservations about Lindros’ attitude, and durability.

Both Eric Lindros and Swedish superstar Peter Forsberg were left stunned that they managed to pass through the first couple of selections. Forsberg, in particular, thought he and Lindros would go first and second. “I am happy to be picked 5th by the Maple Leafs, but I was certain I was going to San Jose”.

Pavel Bure was the top European skater, being drafted 3rd by the Vancouver Canucks, whilst Chris Osgood was the first goalie drafted at 7th by the Winnipeg Jets.

The following rounds will take place tomorrow morning, where San Jose starts the process all over again with the first pick in the second round. Slovak centre Jozef Stumpel and Latvian defender Sandis Ozolinsh are the favourites to be picked early in the second round, though some predict the Sharks to pick “off the board” again with sources saying Swedish centre Michael Nylander may be selected by the expansion team.

The complete first round is listed below:
1 - Scott Niedermayer - SJ
2 - Steve Rucchin - PHI
3 - Pavel Bure - VAN
4 - Eric Lindros - QUE
5 - Peter Forsberg - TOR
6 - Ray Whitney - STL
7 - Chris Osgood - WPG
8 - Brian Savage - BUF
9 - Brian Rolston - DET
10-John Madden - HFD
11-Zigmund Palffy - NJD
12-David Oliver - WAS
13-Nikolai Khabibulin - NYI
14-Glen Murray - MLT
15-Daniel Alfredsson - MIN
16-Rob Valicevic - LA
17-Todd Marchant - BOS
18-Marcus Naslund - NYR
19-Pat Falloon - CAL
20-Jere Lehtinen - EDM
21-Phillipe Boucher - CHI
22-Kirk Maltby - PIT

Sharks wrap up inaugural draft
7/4/1991 15.05 PST

With 260 players selected over 2 days, the 1991 NHL entry draft came to a close today in Buffalo’s Memorial Auditorium. For the San Jose Sharks, it was their first of many draft weekends which netting them 12 players in total, including the first overall pick: Scott Niedermayer.

Following the eventfully opening day, which saw Eric Lindros drop down to the Nordiques at 4th overall, the Sharks had the first pick in the second round where they selected Swedish playmaking centre Michael Nylander.

Team sources described the 6’1” Nylander as a quick premiere playmaker which they hope can contribute within the next couple of years. With the team already loaded with 4 NHL centres on the roster, it is thought that Nylander would spend the ’91 season down on the farm getting all the ice time he needs.

In total, the Sharks drafted 3 defensemen, and 9 forwards from Sweden, Russia, Canada, Czech Republic and Finland.

GM Fyvie described his first draft: “It was a wonderful experience. I feel we came away with a lot of everything - size, speed, skill and sandpaper.”

With a few more months until training camp, the Sharks’ front office will determine who gets signed, who makes the team and who goes down to Kansas City, the Sharks’ minor league affiliate.

Complete list of Sharks picks:
1: Scott Niedermayer - Defense
2: Michael Nylander - Centre
3: Magnus Arvedson - Left Wing
4: Boris Mironov - Defense
5: Darren McCarty - Right Wing
6: Grant Marshall - Right Wing
7: Marko Jantunen - Centre
8: Pavel Kolarik - Defense
9: Valeri Karpov - Right Wing
10:Vladimir Vorobiev - Left Wing
11:Alex Stojanov - Right Wing
12:Ryan Vandenbussche - Right Wing

Sharks feast on Free-agent market
7/9/1991 14.05 PST

It’s been a busy last few days in San Jose for Coach/GM Fyvie. The NHL’s newest franchise added several new faces to their growing roster.

22 year old centre Mike Sullivan from Marshfield Mass, described as a defensive specialist, was signed July 6th. Defensemen Jon Klemm, and wingers Jeff Odgers and Lonnie Loach signed on the dotted line July 7th. The three players are to be introduced later today to the local press.

Fyvie was all smiles. “It’s an exciting day for these four young men. They get to join the Sharks on the ground floor.”

It is expected that all three will get a chance to crack to roster, but realistically they could all find themselves down in Kansas City to start the year.

Coach/GM Fyvie explained “We need depth. And these four gentlemen provide just that. They’ll be a few more of these (press conferences) this summer as we add more bodies to the mix.”

21 year old Jon Klemm is from Cranbrook BC and provides a steady presence on the right side of the defensive zone. Jeff Odgers is 22 years old and can be safely described as an enforcer. He’s from Spy Hill Saskatchewan. Lonnie Loach is from Temiskaming Shores Ontario. He’s 23 years old and is more of an offensive sparkplug.

Off season news and notes:

trade rumours have begun to percolate around the Cow Palace with front office staff from the Montreal Canadiens being sighted. Sources close to the Sharks management team were quiet but did confirm a trade has been discussed with the Canadiens.

35 year old San Jose centre Peter Stastny (pictured) has been sighted in his hometown training with new teammate, 25 year old winger David Volek this summer. Both players grew up in Czechoslovakia 10 years apart and are keen to familiarise themselves with each other. It has been reported that GM Fyvie acquired the two players with the idea that they would be line-mates.

Sharks first trade nets 50 goal scorer
7/23/1991 14.55 PST

The San Jose Sharks have acquired 25 year old right winger Stephane Richer from the Montreal Canadiens for Defenseman Tommy Sjodin, former Canadien prospect Tom Chorske and a 7th round pick. Also included from Montreal with Richer is prospect defender Sean Hill.

Eager to land a bonafide goalscorer, GM Fyvie contacted Montreal and offered to return a prospect he selected from Montreal earlier in the month. “I knew they took a risk leaving Chorske unprotected (in the expansion draft) and I offered to return him.. for a price”.

Stephane Richer (pictured bottom left), a 2 time 50 goal scorer, brings a suitcase of valuable tools to San Jose. “He’s big. He can score, skate and drive to the net. He’s everything you want in a top line winger” added Fyvie.

With the roster close to completion for the start of the pre-season in September, many suspect Richer will find his spot alongside fellow former Canadiens Lebeau (pictured bottom right) and Gilchrist.

“We like Richer’s familiarity with some of the other players, for sure”. Said Fyvie of Richer’s potential chemistry. “He would pair up nicely with Lebeau. They suit each other.”

Stephane Richer was not available for comment, but his future potential line-mate was happy to talk.

“I would love to centre Stephane”. Added Lebeau who was in San Jose looking for a new apartment. “We’ve spoke on the phone briefly and he’s looking forward to coming this week to check things out.”

21 year old Sean Hill, also coming from Montreal, has yet to crack an NHL roster but was shocked at the trade. “You’re just a prospect, working in the minors and pick up the phone to hear you’ve been moved along with a top line player. It’s crazy!”

The Duluth native brings a strong two-way game, but at just 21, may have to wait awhile before he can showcase it in the NHL. “I like to hit people, defend the net and I’m a big fan of sending clappers to the net on the powerplay.”

This was the first trade of San Jose’s short history.

Pre-season hockey begins September 19 with the regular season starting October 3. Tickets are still available but going fast.

Sharks arrive for inaugural training camp
9/11/1991 12.05 PST

The NHL’s newest team began it’s long journey to respectability today as the San Jose Sharks opened their very first Training Camp.

Amongst the throng of reporters were several players, young and old, preparing themselves to do battle with each other, and eventually real opponents, when the pre-season begins later this month.

“We’re here and ready to work.” Said newly acquired sniper Stephane Richer. “I like training camp. It’s always an exciting time.” The right winger will be counted on to deliver on his rap sheet of two 50 goal seasons and a Stanley Cup to boot.

Leading starting goalie candidate Glenn Healy was more philosophical. “Training camp is more about intensity than anything else. It doesn’t really get hard mentally until you start facing real opposition. Then it gets challenging.”

All-star veteran Peter Stastny was soaking up the atmosphere. “I’ve been around for a long time and am used to moving to somewhere new. It’s actually a wonderful experience, meeting new friends.”

The gravity of the occasion hit rookie defensemen, and the franchise’s first overall pick, Scott Niedermayer like a ton of hockey pucks. “It’s my first training camp. I’m not sure I belong here. (Gerald Diduck) told me that it’s normal to feel that way, but it’s still terrifying”.

It was a first for Coach and General Manager Dave Fyvie too. “Scott’s not the only rookie here. I think we’ll be leaning on each other quite a bit here in the beginning. Even if it’s just someone reminding (me) which way the bathroom is.”

The Sharks training camp, open to the public every morning, will put all the players through their paces. The morning skates will showcase the coach’s various line combinations along with various tactics. Every afternoon the team breaks up and hits the gym and video room for off-ice instruction and workshop various situations.

Opposition feeds on Sharks in Pre-Season
9/29/1991 10.05 PST

It was only seven games, but to the San Jose Sharks it might’ve felt longer. With a Pre-Season record of 0-5-2, the Sharks have a few days before the real games begin, to lick their wounds after being outscored 17 - 41.

There were some bright spots amongst all those defeats. Stephan Lebeau and Stephane Richer led the team with 7 points each with Lebeau scoring 5 goals and Richer adding 5 assists. Rookie Mike Sullivan, tasked with going against the opposition’s best, escaped the Pre-Season with a respectable minus 1.

But other than a few good shifts, the Pre-Season went as many had expected. “We knew we were going to get tossed around a bit.” Added Coach Fyvie. “We saw some really good efforts from some of the younger guys. Nylander and Niedermayer both looked really good, as did (Josef) Beranek and (Peter) Popovic.”

And how did the veterans impress? “The older guys had a different time of it, I think.” Stated the coach. “I feel that most of them focussed more on the little things and were trying to get it right as opposed to trying to win the game. It’s the Pre-Season so that’s the more experienced approach for sure.”

With the Pre-Season concluded, the fans will have a better idea on where their players will line up. Stephan Lebeau and Stephane Richer were joined at the hip through the 7 games and responded well with Brent Gilchrist providing the defensive conscious to the pair. Peter Stastny and David Volek were paired up and joined by Ken Hodges and Josef Beranek at different times. Sullivan and Wayne Presely formed a solid checking pair, and Garpenlov moved up and down the line-up: sometimes with rookie Michael Nylander, and at other times with Mike Sullivan and Wayne Presley.

The defensive pairings were a bit more static, with barely any movement throughout the top six. Patrice Brisebois and Craig Muni were the top pair throughout Pre-Season and Hawgood and Diduck were the second pair. Veteran, and favourite to be named captain, Dean Kennedy was paired with rookies Peter Popovic and Scott Niedermayer at different times on the third pair.

When asked, Kennedy (pictured) enjoyed his time with the kids. “They’re both really great to play with. They get the little things right, and go from there. I think (Neidermayer) was a bit more nervous having never played Pro before, but you could tell (Popovic) had played with men before, in Sweden.”

The NHL regular season begins October 4th with the Sharks playing on the road in Vancouver. San Jose’s home opening is the following night, October 5th, at the Cow Palace where they will host the Vancouver Canucks. Puck drops at 7.05 PST.

Canucks tame Sharks in tight contest
10/4/1991 21.45 PST

It came down to one goal, but that’s all the Canucks needed to beat the Sharks on Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum.

Gary Valk’s goal at 13:19 of the second period, gave the Canucks the lead and ultimately the win over the upstart Sharks: 3 - 2.

Brent Gilchrist (pictured) of San Jose tied the game twice, once in the first period with a shorthanded goal, and again in the second period at even strength. It was a good effort from the winger who made the contest close.

“I thought we played well and kept the game close. Vancouver has a good squad and we’re just happy to give them a challenge now that the games count”. Gilchrist, the second star of game, said.

Opening the score tonight was Trevor Linden at 00:38 into the first period. Gilchrist tied the score later in the period at 11:29. Greg Adams of the Canucks took the lead again at 11:47 of the first. Gilchrist tied the game again at 11:14 of the second, only for Gary Valk to score the eventual winner shortly thereafter at 13:19 of the second period. Shots were 30 - 13 for Vancouver. The Canucks were 1 for 2 on the powerplay (surrendering one shorthanded goal) whereas the Sharks were 0 for 3 with the man advantage.

Missing the first game of the season with an injury was David Volek, who is out with a mild abdominal strain. Watching from the press box were defenseman Peter Popovic, and wingers Jeff Odgers and Brian Lawton.

The Sharks take on the Canucks again tomorrow, but this time down in San Jose for the team’s home opener. It’s a quick turnaround for the squad who play another 2 games at home later in the week against the Calgary Flames and the Winnipeg Jets.

“We’ll evaluate how everybody is feeling tomorrow and see who’ll get the start. (Berthiaume’s) turn will be next and we may make a few more changes throughout the line-up” added Coach Fyvie.

Blood in the water as Linden and the Canucks go Shark fishing
10/6/1991 21.45 PST

No one likes to get beat-up at their own party, but that’s exactly what happened to the San Jose Sharks as the team celebrated it’s inaugural home opener by losing to the visiting Canucks 4-1.

21 year old captain Trevor Linden (Pictured) of the Vancouver Canucks welcomed hockey to the bay area by putting on a 3 point show and leading his team to a valuable win on the road. The winger opened up the scoring at 11.14 of the first and followed it up with a powerplay goal in the 3rd and an assist on Brian Bradley’s empty netter to ice the game.

“Obviously it is an exciting time in San Jose, but we have a hockey game to play and we wanted to leave an impression.” Linden said. The captain is only just beginning his career, but at 6’4” he is a handful when ever he is on the ice.

After Linden opened the scoring, the Canucks took a 2-0 lead at 7:02 in the 2nd period when Jim Sandlak tipped a Petr Nedved slapshot past Sharks' goalie Daniel Berthiaume. It wasn’t until after Linden’s second goal, a 3rd period powerplay marker, that San Jose finally got on the board. Stephane Richer’s first goal of the season found its way past Canucks’ backup Chris Terreri at 10.20 of the 3rd period.

After Brian Bradley’s empty netter, the game was over, leaving the 11 thousand spectators in the Cow Palace to mull over the NHL’s newest team.

“It’s a fast game, I just wished we could’ve scored more.” Said a young Jonathan McMurphy, wearing a brand new teal and silver Lebeau jersey. “I can’t wait until (Gretzky) comes to town. He’s who we really want to see”.

Vancouver’s powerplay went 1 for 6, where the Sharks’ powerplay went 0 for 4. Vancouver outshot the home side 29-20.

It was the second meeting in as many nights between the two teams as the Canucks defeated San Jose the previous night 3-2 in Vancouver.

It doesn’t get any easier as the Sharks’ homestead continues this week where the team will host the Calgary Flames Oct 8, and the Winnipeg Jets Oct 10.

Flames doused by Sharks
10/8/1991 21.48 PST

It only took 3 games, but the San Jose Sharks got their first win of the season with a 4-3 nail bitter against the Flames.

Pugilist Jeff Odgers’ two goals earned him the first star for his team’s inaugural win, and the Spy Hill Saskatchewan native couldn’t have been happier. “Scoring both goals in my first game of the year, in the first period was really something. It all happened so fast, we got a turnover and the puck was on and then off my stick in a matter of seconds (for both goals).”

Odgers (pictured) also got into a scrap in the first period, fighting fellow tough guy Gary Roberts. “Yeah, I was pretty tired that first intermission” noted Odgers.

The Sharks got off to a comfortable 4-1 lead before the Flames began to climb back. Head Coach Fyvie was all nerves behind the bench. “Their team is so dangerous. We were all clock watching in the final half of the third. Thankfully (Healy) made some big saves for us at the end the boys got us our first win of the year”.

Adding to Odgers’ two goals was Wayne Presley with one of his own at 2.12 in the third, and Stephane Richer notching his second of the year at 19.55 in the second period from a nice feed from line-mate Stephan Lebeau. Calgary’s Al MacInnis scored his first of the year from the blue line at 15.08 of the first, and scored again later at 9.10 of the 3rd for his second of the year. Joe Nieuwendyk made it close with his first of the year at 10.59 of the 3rd to pull the Flames to within one.

The Flames outshot the Sharks 39-15 making Glenn Healy’s 36 save performance a highlight. “The guys let me see the puck all night and were close by to clear all my rebounds.” Said the sweaty netminder.

Calgary went 0 for 5 on the powerplay, whereas the Sharks shot blanks on their 4 opportunities with the man advantage making the game a penalty-killing clinic.

Playing their first game of the season, were goal scorer Jeff Odgers and young Swedish defenseman Peter Popovic who took over Scott Niedermayer's spot on the 3rd pairing.

All in all it was a great game at the Cow Palace for all in attendance and for the Sharks’ coaching staff, the tactical adjustments from the early losses seemed to have paid off.

Calgary takes tomorrow off and then continues their California road swing to play the Kings in Los Angeles on the 10th. San Jose stays home and faces Teemu Selanne and the Winnipeg Jets, also on the 10th.

Jets crash on the road
10/10/1991 22.05 PST

Hardly high-flying, the Winnipeg Jets rolled into San Jose and fell 7-1 to the Sharks tonight.

With all eyes on the Finnish Flash, it was the flying French Canadians that took over the scoresheet. Patrice Brisebois, Richer, and Lebeau combined for 6 points en route to a 7-1 rout.

Brisebois opened the scoring at 5.11 of the first with a powerplay goal, San Jose’s first of the year, and the goals kept coming. When it was all said and done, Brisebois had 2 powerplay goals, Richer a goal and 2 assists and Lebeau with one assist himself. Moose Jaw native Brent Gilchrist, doing yeoman work alongside Richer and Lebeau, had another 2 point night - his second 2 point night of the short season.

Gilchrist shrugged off the praise and complimented his line mates.“Anytime you play with Richer and Lebeau, they make things easier for you. You skate your line and they find you all by yourself.”

Coach Fyvie was happy with the effort. “It’s a home game and it’s about time we started taking it to the opposition. We were happy to get the match-ups we wanted and doubly happy to get 2 goals on the powerplay.”

For their efforts, Winnipeg struck on the powerplay themselves, with Thomas Steen finding the net behind Sharks starter Glenn Healy with the help of Finns Selanne (pictured) and Numminen at 7.58 of the second. The goal made it 4-1 but that was all the Jets could muster.

Also scoring for the Sharks was veteran all-star Peter Stastny, with one goal and two assists, Greg Hawgood with one goal, and Johan Garpenlov also with one goal. Glenn Healy was awarded the second star of the night with a phenomenal 33 save night.

For the season, San Jose has an even record of 2-2. Winnipeg’s record falls to 1-2-1.

The San Jose Sharks’ schedule takes them on the road for the next 3 games in 4 nights where they face the Blues, Blackhawks and Los Angeles Kings. Winnipeg remain in the Golden State for a meeting with the Kings on Oct 12th.

Sharks feed on ‘Hawks for first road win
10/13/1991 2145 CT

It was another first, in a season full of firsts, as San Jose won their first road game against the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1.

It was the second game in as many nights for the Sharks who came into Chicago still hurting from their 4-2 loss against Brett Hull and the Blues. But thanks to a standout performance from Stephane Richer (pictured), who has scored in 5 straight games, and his wingman Lebeau, the Sharks managed to climb back to an even record.

“We’re very happy to split these two nights with a win here in Chicago”. Noted Coach Fyvie. “Berthiaume, Richer and Lebeau really carried it for us. I think we caught the ‘Hawks a bit off guard. We were hungry tonight.”

Opening the scoring was Chicago’s newest Russian import Valerie Kamensky who scored his 4th of the year at 5.58 of the first. But that was all for the Blackhawks as the Sharks proceeded to score 3 unanswered goals by Lebeau (his first of the year), David Volek (his first of the year and on the powerplay), and Richer who now leads the team with 5 goals and 4 assists in just 6 games.

The game’s 3rd star Daniel Berthiaume was in net for his second start of the year. He was happy for the result. “Obviously as a backup you suspect you’ll get your starts on the back end of consecutive games, you just hope you’re ready and the boys have something left in the tank to give you. We were great in all 3 zones tonight.” Berthiaume made 29 saves for a 96.7 SV%.

Chicago was 0-2 with the mad advantage tonight while San Jose went 1-8 with David Volek’s first of the year.

Notable scratches tonight were Jeff Odgers, Peter Popovic, and Brian Lawton. 18 year old rookie Scott Niedermayer was back on the 3rd pair for just his 3 start of the season as he and 23 year old Swede Popovic appear to be sharing duties.

San Jose continues their road trip by heading back West to face the Kings in Los Angeles Oct 16, and Chicago will face the defending Stanley Cup Champion Oilers Oct 17 here in Chicago.

Sharks agree to terms with new D-man
10/17/1991

Defensemen Brad Berry of Bashaw AB has been signed as a free-agent by the San Jose Sharks, thus ending the audition of first overall pick Scott Niedermayer.

Coach Fyvie had no problems justifying the move. “We like what (Niedermayer) has brought these last four games but we have to be realistic with our expectations for his development. It’s time we give him top minutes in the minors and let him grow at his own pace.”

For his part, the 6’2” Berry (pictured with Winnipeg) is excited to be joining another NHL club. “I’ve spent the last few seasons up in Winnipeg and am happy for another crack at the show.” Berry played 98 games over 3 seasons with the Jets, compiling 18 points and 126 PIM. “I’m a stay-at-home guy. I try and use my size to clear the crease.”

The thinking is that Berry’s approach to the game will help another young Shark: Peter Popovic. “Obviously Popovic and Berry play the same style and aren’t that different in age or size. Berry gives us depth we were sorely lacking at the NHL level.”

The signing comes the morning before a game against the Minnesota North Stars and the morning after a tough 5-1 loss on the road at the hands of the Kings.

“We’ll let Brad watch from the press-box tonight, I think. We still have to stitch up his jersey” added Coach Fyvie.

The puck drops at the Cow Palace at 7.05 PST. It is the first meeting between the 3-1-0 North Stars and the 3-4-0 Sharks.

Sharks battle hard to end 5 game skid
10/26/1991 2147 EST

San Jose wins their first game in 5 thanks to a 3 point night from their star winger, Stephane Richer.

It was a see-saw affair through much of the evening in New Jersey, but the Sharks pulled a win out of their tough Eastern road trip which had already seen them lose in Hartford and Buffalo.

The Devils got it started with a Claude Lemieux wristshot past Sharks’ netminder Berthiaume at 1.07 of the first, before the Sharks’ offense took over. Richer, Bergland and Brisebois (pictured) struck leaving the Devils trailing by 2 at the end of the first.

The lead held up thru the second period as Paul Ysebaert made it a one goal affair at 7.22 of the middle frame.

The punch and counter-punch of the third period saw the Devils and Sharks trade chances and goals. Kirk Muller’s goal at 6.10 of the third tied it up before Stephan Lebeau and David Volek’s goals pulled the Sharks ahead for good. Ysebaert would tally one more before Gilchrist iced the game with an empty netter.

“This was a real battle out there. They didn’t want to lose and we were tired of losing” said Coach Fyvie of the game. “We made a couple of adjustments to our blueline pairings and it seemed to pay-off.” Referring to the Brisebois for Diduck swap amongst the top two pairs on the backend. Brisebois responded to the ‘demotion’ by netting 2 points. Diduck thrived on the added icetime as he registered an assist. The new pairs are expected to remain for the time being. “We like Muni with Diduck - they can really shut down the opposition for us and Hawgood and (Brisebois) are great at moving the puck”.

All in all San Jose led in the shot department too by 35-23. The Shark’s powerplay went 2-6 and the Devils went 2-8.

The Sharks’ tour of the Eastern seaboard continues Oct 29 with games against the Islanders, Flyers, Nordiques and Maple Leafs. The Devils enjoy a further 4 games on their current homestand. They host the Canucks on Oct 29th.

Lafontaine’s hat trick nets milestone
10/29/1991 22.05 EST

New York Islanders’ great Pat Lafontaine (pictured) needed 2 goals to reach the 300 goal plateau tonight, and he scored one more for good measure as his Islanders beat the expansion team Sharks by a score of 6-2.

“It’s been a great run so far. I hope that I can stick around long enough to score 300 more.” Lafontaine said of his achievement.

In the net for all of the Islanders’ 6 goals was former teammate Glenn Healy. “I’m obviously very happy for him, I just wish he scored them all on somebody else.”

Aside from the milestone, there was still a game to be played, and the Islanders had little trouble dispatching the league’s newest franchise. Bill Berg opened the scoring at 5.13 of the first and the Islanders were in command from there. After the dust settled the Islanders outshot the Sharks 42-18. Along with Lafontaine’s 3 goals, were scorers Berg, who scored another in the third, and the rookie centre Travis Green, who scored his first of his career, in the second.

The Sharks managed to keep it close until Lafontaine’s two goals late in the third. Ken Hodge scored his 4th of the year at 17.41 of the second, and Peter Stastny tallied his 2nd on the powerplay at 6.46 of the third.

With the victory the Islanders climb to 6-3-1 while the Sharks continue to struggle at 4-9-0.

The Sharks, in the midst of a 7 game road trip, and are beginning to feel the strain. “We have 3 more games (out East) and we need to take advantage of the day off tomorrow and take it easy.” Said Coach Fyvie.

The Sharks move on to Philadelphia to face the frightening Flyers Oct 31st, while the Islanders take a trip to Chicago to face the Blackhawks, also on the 31st.

Sharks strike to end 6 game slide
11/22/1991 21:47 PST

Stephan Lebeau had a 4 point night catapulting his team to a much needed victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was their first win in 6 games.

Al Iafrate got the game rolling with his 8th goal of the year at .24 into the first period. After that, the Sharks took over as they scored 5 unanswered goals, with Lebeau (pictured) figuring in 4 of them.

“Everything just clicked for me tonight.” Said the centre. “We’ve had a very slow start so I hope we can pick up some momentum going into December.”

Coming into the game at 5-17, the San Jose faithful were delighted to see their team win a game, just their second in the month of November. Their previous win coming Nov 4th, against none other than the same Toronto Maple Leafs. “Wouldn’t it be nice to see them some more.” Said Coach Fyvie. “We obviously match up well against them.”

Glenn Healy also had a strong showing, making 27 saves on the night. “It’s been a really rough start to the year for me.” Noted the goaltender. “I haven’t been at my best many times this year, so tonight made me happy.”

There isn’t much time to celebrate as the Sharks face the Kings tomorrow, in Los Angeles. The Leafs will follow the Sharks south to LA but don’t play the Kings until the 26th giving them a chance the rest up and watch the competition.

For the season, San Jose sports a sorry 6-17 record, where as the Leafs are a respectable 12-11-1.
