May 9-11: @ Baltimore Orioles

Game #32: Toronto annihilates Baltimore 20-0

We got to the Orioles pitching early and often, racking up 20 runs on 21 hits, while start Juan Guzman was masterful, allowing 2 hits in 8.1 innings. Every regular registered at least one hit, with three registering 3+.

WP: Juan Guzman (1-4)
LP: Ben McDonald (1-3)
HR: Paul Molitor (2), Mike Huff (2)

Game #33: Jays fire on all cylinders to continue Baltimore's losing skid

Another offensive shellacking, and another gem of a performance from our starter. This time Pat Hentgen with the W, going 8.2 innings and allowing a single earned run, while Robbie Alomar led the way with 2 home runs, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored.

WP: Pat Hentgen (7-0)
LP: Arthur Rhodes (1-3)
HR: Joe Carter (4), Roberto Alomar 2 (2)

Game #34: Clean sweep of Orioles has Toronto up 4.5 games for division lead

Dave Stewart turned in an ugly performance with 8 walks to go with 6 hits in 6 innings, but managed to escape with only a single run allowed and the victory.

WP: Dave Stewart (2-2)
LP: Jaime Moyer (2-2)
SV: Tony Castillo (9)
HR: Ed Sprague (1), Joe Carter (5)

May 13-15: @ Boston Red Sox

Game #35: Jays lose heartbreaker in extras

Normally when your starter gives you 9 innings you can feel confident in assuming you'd get the W. Not so on this night, unfortunately. A miscue in the 10th allowed Scott Cooper to drive in the winning run in walk-off fashion off closer Tony Castillo, who had committed the error that kept the game alive with two outs.

WP: Ken Ryan (3-2)
LP: Tony Castillo (0-3)
HR: Andre Dawson (6)

GM Notes: Mike Huff got injured while running the bases and had to leave the game. The prognoses is a strained hip flexor, and will be day-to-day but should remain in the lineup.

Game #36: Deja Vu as Cooper walks off Blue Jays

Like a re-run of your favourite sitcom, Scott Cooper just keeps walking off the Blue Jays in the 10th off closer Tony Castillo, who replaced Woody Williams after a pair of walks to begin the inning.

WP: Greg Harris (1-0)
LP: Woody Williams (3-1)
HR: Joe Carter (6)

Game #37: New acquisition Hulett helps Toronto avoid sweep

Another phenomenal outing from Pat Hentgen, who went the distance and only allowed one run (unearned) for the victory. New starting third baseman Tom Hulett (who was acquired from the Orioles after the previous game) went 2-for-4 to make a fine impression on his new teammates.

WP: Pat Hentgen (8-0)
LP: Jim Neidlinger (0-3)
HR: Devon White (7), John Olerud (4), Joe Carter (7)

Trade Breakdown: Hulett for Bowers

A day or two ago I heard rumblings that Baltimore had Tom Hulett on the trade block. After sending Ryan out to give him a closer look, and determining that the Orioles weren't asking for much, the following deal shook out:

In Hulett, we get an immediate (albeit marginal) upgrade to the Ed Sprague/Darnell Coles platoon at the hot corner, and Bowers wasn't going to figure into our future plans, bouncing between two levels of A-ball this year and not performing well at either. To make room for Hulett, Ray Giannelli (whom Cito had yet to put into a game) was waived and designated for assignment.

May 16-18: vs Detroit Tigers

Game #38: Tigers double up Jays in high-scoring affair

After going down 5 after half an inning we stormed back to take a 6-5 lead after 3, but our bats went silent for the rest of the game and the Tigers turned it on in a big way, culminating in a 5-run 8th that sealed the deal.

WP: Bill Krueger (2-1)
LP: Danny Cox (0-1)
HR: Lou Whitaker (2), Travis Fryman (3)

Game #39: Toronto pins bad loss on Detroit

We bounced back well with a strong showing to even the series against the Tigers. Al Leiter went 7 solid innings for us, while Devo and Hulett both came through with a trio of hits in the win.

WP: Al Leiter (3-1)
LP: John Doherty (2-4)
HR: Devon White (8), Travis Fryman (4)

Game #40: Jays unable to come back late, lose to Tigers

Another night of the bats going silent and the bullpen not being able to preserve the lead. This one was tough to swallow.

WP: Brian Maxcy (2-0)
LP: Duane Ward (0-2)
SV: Mike Henneman (6)
HR: Devon White (9), Cecil Fielder (5)

May 20-23: vs Cleveland Indians

Game #41: Win pushes Indians over .500

The offense sputtered in this one, and our pitching couldn't pick up the slack.

WP: Mark Clark (3-3)
LP: Juan Guzman (1-5)
HR: Sandy Alomar (3), Albert Belle (18), Carlos Baerga (9)

Game #42: Jays storm back to win

The offense bailed Pat Hentgen out and put him in line for his 9th consecutive win instead of his first loss of the year.

WP: Pat Hentgen (9-0)
LP: Jason Grimsley (2-2)
SV: Tony Castillo (10)
HR: Dick Schofield (1), Joe Carter (8)

Game #43: Toronto bats go silent against Cleveland's Martinez

Despite getting 10 hits, we could only muster a single run. It's disappointing, and I'm getting close to thinking we might need to make a change.

WP: Dennis Martinez (4-5)
LP: Dave Stewart (2-3)
SV: Eric Plunk (6)
HR: Wayne Kirby (4)

Game #44: Castillo blows up in the 9th, Jays lose

Todd Stottlemyre's superb 8 inning performance was thrown away in the 9th, with Castillo giving up 4 runs while only registering a single out. The 8-run inning wasn't something we could come back from.

WP: Jerry DiPoto (1-2)
LP: Tony Castillo (0-4)
HR: Joe Carter (9)

An Early Season Aside: Looking Ahead

All-Star voting has just begun, and that fact has caused me to begin thinking ahead to how this roster is going to look after the season ends, and there are some important decisions to make before that happens:

Roughly a quarter of the contracts issued expire at the end of the season. Most of them I'm not too concerned about. We'll be losing 3 bullpen arms in Lancaster, Ward and Cox, but none of them are doing very well so far this season and competent bullpen arms should theoretically be easy enough to procure. Borders, despite playing well in limited action this year and bringing home World Series MVP for us in 1992, is 31 and I don't think he'll be trending in any direction except downward. Veterans Stewart, Hulett and Coles likely won't be coming back either due to their age, and Giannelli doesn't offer much positional flexibility as a bench option.

This leaves us to our four main extension options:

Schofield is having a career year in Toronto, putting up a slash line of .312/.408/.408 in increased playing time, taking over for the departed Tony Fernandez. However, he's 31 and it's unclear if he'll be able to keep up this pace through the end of the season, let alone into the future. Luckily, even if he were to revert to a bench bat, his extension request ($1.4M over 2 years) may still be a reasonable starting point to bring him back.

Stottlemyre's on his way to a career year as well, and still has room for growth, projecting to be a solid mid-rotation starter if things proceed as they have been. We'll try to talk him down a bit on price, but his demand is a good place to start from.

Now we get to the real problem. Both play a premium position, both played an integral role in our back-to-back championships, and both want lengthy expensive deals. The difference? One's 26, the other's on the wrong side of 30. As much as it's going to hurt, it's an obvious choice, and I don't think Devo will be back next year. Which is going to beg the question, what to do about him? If we're still in the thick of the division race or atop it, I'll feel comfortable going into the off-season and letting the chips fall where they may. If we somehow fall out of contention (knock on wood) he'll make a phenomenal trade chip as a rental. We'll just have to see.

I am, however, cringing a bit at Alomar's asking price and the length of the contract. I definitely want to bring him back, but perhaps we'll try to sell him on a slightly shorter deal with a higher AAV. And without the opt out. Hopefully.

May 24-25: @ New York Yankees

Game #45: Jays lose a close one in walk-off fashion

Cito might have left Randy St. Claire a bit too long in this one, giving up the game-ending single to Mike Stanley. I guess he didn't want to run Castillo out on back to back nights, especially considering how he blew the finale against Cleveland.

WP: Bob Wickman (3-3)
LP: Randy St. Claire (1-2)
HR: Paul Molitor (3)

Game #46: Deja Vu? Toronto walked off again

Another blown save by Castillo, his 5th of the year, and a closer look at his advanced stats is troubling. He's issuing almost 8 walks per 9 innings, with a WHIP over 2 and an opponents' OPS of .834. It's an untenable situation; we can't keep running him out there as the closer if he can't close down the games.

WP: Royal Clayton (2-0)
LP: Tony Castillo (0-5)
HR: Joe Carter (10)

May 26-29: Off-Day, vs California Angels

Off-Day Musings: It's clear that something needs to be done to fix our bullpen. The starting pitching can't be expected to carry the whole load, despite having done so up to this point. I've put some feelers out to see if we can bring in another dependable back-end arm or two. I'm hopeful to get things moving by the end of this upcoming series against California.

Game #47: Hentgen first starter to 10 wins

I've been so impressed with Pat Hentgen so far this year. He's the first to double digits in wins in the majors, and almost went the distance in this one.

WP: Pat Hentgen (10-0)
LP: Joe Magrane (4-3)
HR: Tim Hulett (1)

Game #48: Jays lose late after Angels comeback

Castillo blew another one and threw away the work Stottlemyre did in his 7 strong innings.

WP: Bob Patterson (4-1)
LP: Tony Castillo (0-6)
SV: Joe Grahe (9)

Game #49: Toronto flips the script, storms back to win in the 9th

Robbie Alomar was the hero in this one, with the walk-off 2-run double to seal the victory.

WP: Randy St. Claire (2-2)
LP: Joe Grahe (3-2)

Breaking Trade News: Toronto find trade partners, shake up pitching staff

In a pair of moves, we brought in an anchor for the back of the bullpen and said goodbye to a veteran leader.

Trade #1:

I have to say, I'm feeling really good about this deal. It was a hard decision to trade Borders, who was such a huge part of our championship teams the last couple years, but with Delgado firmly entrenched as the starter (and doing very well in his first full-time year) he was getting paid too much to play so few games. Coles was made redundant with the acquisition of Hulett a short while ago, and Brito doesn't factor into our long-term plans with Alex Gonzalez at AAA and almost ready to come up and contribute at the major league level.

In Montgomery, we get an all-star calibre closer for the rest of this year and next year who will push Tony Castillo into lower leverage situations. Hopefully this will improve his rate of implosions, as we'd be 5 or 6 games ahead for the division lead without his 6 blown saves. The prospects are nothing to really write home about, but Vitiello has been tearing up AAA and there's a dearth of talent in our system, so every little bit helps.

Trade #2:

Stewart was hovering around league average at the back of the rotation, but his contract expires at the end of the year and if he doesn't retire I doubt we'd bring him back anyway. Budz hasn't played any games for us, and he was stuck in Rookie ball at 22.

Relaford and Dean give us another pair of middle infield prospects with upside, but the real gem of this one may be Mantei, who's been tearing up A-ball. The aim is to turn at least one of the prospects acquired between the two deals into a starter to fill in Smoke's old spot and shore us up for down the stretch.

In corresponding moves, Randy Knorr and Shawn Green have both been exceptional for AAA Syracuse, and I had a word with Cito to make sure that Green is starting for us this time around. He'll be taking over in LF for Mike Huff.

May 30 - June 1: vs Oakland Athletics

Game #50: Blue Jay bats symied by Ontiveros

Athletics starter Steve Ontiveros kept our bats in check across 8 innings, limiting us to 5 hits and 1 earned run in the 3-run loss.

WP: Steve Ontiveros (4-3)
LP: Juan Guzman (1-6)
SV: Dennis Eckersley (10)
HR: Rickey Henderson (1), Scott Brosius (3)

Game #51: Despite late Oakland rally, Toronto comes out on top

A 4-run 2nd inning, paced by 2-run blasts from Robbie Alomar and Carlos Delgado, was enough to bring back the W. Starter Al Leiter went 7.1 innings, scattering 6 hits and allowing 1 earned run for the victory.

WP: Al Leiter (4-1)
LP: Todd Van Poppel (2-2)
SV: Jeff Montgomery (13)

Game #52: Big night from Brosius gives A's the win in back-and-forth affair

Scott Brosius helped Oakland take 2 of 3 from us in the Skydome, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a walk and giving Pat Hentgen his first loss on the year.

WP: Bobby Witt (4-4)
LP: Pat Hentgen (10-1)
SV: Dennis Eckersley (11)

May in Review: Toronto Blue Jays

Well. That didn't exactly go so well. After starting the month off hot--going 8-2 with sweeps over Kansas City and Baltimore and being 4 games up on the division lead on the 12th--we fell back down to earth. Hard. We finished the month 14-13, with an overall record of 26-26. Luckily, that's been enough to keep us in first, as every other team in the division is below .500. As you'll note in the next review post for the entire MLB, nobody from the east appears to have a shot at the Wildcard if this keeps up.

So it's division title or bust.
