I'm starting to work on the formula now
If you have the batter's values in the row as shown below (column M=CON, N=GAP, O=HR, P=EYE), the formula is =if(M11>50, 0.45*(M11-50), -0.9*(50-M11))+if(P11>50, 0.3*(P11-50), -0.14*(50-P11))+if(O11>50, 0.15*(O11-50), -0.09*(50-O11))+if(N11>50, 0.1*(N11-50), -0.15*(50-N11)) I'm not exactly sure what to do with the value once it's calculated though. Also of all the players in my spreadsheet, Ed Brinkman has the lowest wOBA at -14. In thinking about it, I believe the formula would become more "punishing" (if you will) as you go to higher and higher leagues, since the overall quality of players in the league would become higher and higher. So you'd have to have better and better players to be "average". But I expect the relative ranking of players one to another would remain the same. Last edited by Charlatan; 04-19-2019 at 08:02 PM. |

Our League I204: Mudville Returns in Triumph
The Muffins, ineligible in 2021 due to a short schedule, won their second straight Our League title, albeit with a year-long sabbatical in between. With only two games remaining, against the Daytona Beach Pickleballers, who themselves were denied a title defense from their lonely outpost in the NC, the Muffins have built an insurmountable lead. All other I204 teams have completed their schedules.

I don't have a spreadsheet, as I did all the calculations using a software product (SAS). However, I do have the equation that you can put into any spreadsheet (I use it in the spreadsheet where I manage my team)... it assumes that CON is in column G, GAP in column H, POW in column I, and I in column J:
=(0.3*MAX(J27-50;0)+0.15*MAX(I27-50;0)+0.45*MAX(G27-50;0)+0.1*MAX(H27-50))-0.9*MAX(0;50-G27)-0.14*MAX(0;50-J27)-0.09*MAX(0;50-I27)-0.15*MAX(0;50-H27) This gives a number: A player that had all 50s would have 0, one that had all values equal to 60 (or weighted average of 60) would result in a value of 10, a weighted average of 70 would be 20, etc. Here is a copy of my ODS spreadsheet with my players (I have put some of the lefty/righty splits in here for platooning options). The column estOFF uses that equation above. Code:
Batters H Val pred CON GAP POW EYE estOFF Smoky Burgess 1954 L 86 5555 88 91 32 53.0 20.48 vR 91 96 32 56.0 23.23 vL 79 77 31 45.0 13.34 Roger Bresnahan peak R 76 475 56 67 16 81 10.64 vL 57 68 16 82 11.49 Daniel Murphy 2016 L 79 1500 80 88 70 29 17.36 vL 69 74 59 24 8.66 Phil Cavarreta 1945 L 72 251 80 82 26 63 18.44 vR 82 86 27 65 20.43 Hanley Ramirez 2009 R 87 2399 79 67 67 42 16.18 vR 79 65 63 39 14.96 Cecil Travis 1941 L 85 83 80 26 41 14.43 vR 86 84 27 43 16.55 Steve Sax 1986 R 67 200 82 74 24 47 14.04 vL 90 87 28 51 20.02 Red Rolfe 1939 L 79 999 70 76 45 57 13.25 vR 72 79 47 54 13.73 vL 61 69 38 67 10.87 Dick Groat 1960 R 78 1600 77 60 10 36 7.59 vR 75 57 11 34 6.20 vL 85 70 9 42 12.94 Edgar Renteria 2003 R 81 1519 78 71 41 49 13.75 vL 80 83 48 57 18.72 Augie Galan 1943 S 78 444 60 60 38 72 11.02 vR 62 63 40 73 12.70 vL 53 51 32 69 5.53 Curt Flood 1963 R 76 1200 72 76 20 35 7.70 vL 81 90 23 41 14.26 vR 70 72 19 33 6.03 Harry Walker 1947 L 76 800 85 82 7 53 15.98 vL 76 69 6 58 12.04 Babe Herman 1932 L 77 600 69 76 56 54 13.25 vL 60 74 52 45 6.50 Last edited by allenciox; 04-19-2019 at 10:45 PM. |

whoops, there is an unlabelled column in the spreadsheet that throws everything off by one column when I posted it. The 3 and 4 digit numbers are the amount of PP I paid for the player when I bought him.

Parakeet backs are against the wall. One more loss vs. PR and there goes their title hopes.

Yes, that's correct. I believe 20.48 is the overall wOBA calc for Burgess, while 23.23 is his value vR and it's 13.34 vL

Newly acquired Johan Santana keeps Aina Haina's hopes alive. Now it is up to Tudor to get the job done. One game do or die.

whoops, noticed a mistake in the equation above, the max on the GAP was missing a zero (it doesn't matter for most players, because most players have a gap of at least 50). At any rate, it should be:
=(0.3*MAX(J20-50;0)+0.15*MAX(I20-50;0)+0.45*MAX(G20-50;0)+0.1*MAX(H20-50;0))-0.9*MAX(0;50-G20)-0.14*MAX(0;50-J20)-0.09*MAX(0;50-I20)-0.15*MAX(0;50-H20) |

Parakeet (Finally) Straighten Up and Fly Right to Repeat in Our League
Aina Haina, provided a cushion by their 50th state brethren Ewa Beach's two-game sweep over rival Seattle, lost all of that padding, before finally winning the last two games of the G313 Our League season, over last place Port Ruppert, to repeat as champions. The Mundys won three of four to firmly pin the Parakeets' wings, but, with no room for further misstep, Aina Haina prevailed.

Nice work. Tom Prappas, my professor for multiple stat courses, would be proud. Your candor emboldens me to release my heretofore proprietary formula for success: {(Did I see this player on "Kiner's Corner?")(# of times he destroyed the Mets)} + (Do I like him?) + (Can I Afford Him?) - (Is he Pete Rose?) = Last edited by Stanley Kuppchaser; 04-20-2019 at 09:17 AM. |

Transylvania Leaking Oil
Transylvania has been struggling after the all star break in S268 with a 68-65 record. The starting pitching has been mediocre, at best. So, management decided to make wholesale changes. Out of the rotation are Guidry, Koosman and Sal "The Barber" Maglie. The Impalers brought in Billy Swift, Burleigh Grimes, and Mel Harder. 1987 Tony Gwynn continues to terrorize opponents, batting .372 through 133 games. 1977 Rod Carew is batting .340. Management is going to look to add some power to the lineup at C, 2B, or 3B next season.

Busy Month in Our League B251 & S287
Took a quick peek at the schedule and saw that B251 and S287 each have 26 Our League games on tap, with only Waffletown in B251 getting a short run. After a brief visit to Shasta for three, they will wait while Stephensville completes its 13-game Our League marathon.
In S287, Battery Point has 7 left, Annandale 10. Of the 15 teams across the two leagues, only Terra Incognita has finished its run. |
