Aina Haina Champs as Wheatland Carpet Bombs Ozark Playoff Hopes
In the end, the tightest Our League race game down to the last game and the application of the tie-breaker. The Bobcats dropped their road series against the Jets, falling victim to a potent Wheatland offense. In game one, Ozark saw their +6 run differential completely wiped out by a 7-1 defeat. They erupted for five first-inning runs in game two, but saw the Jets chip away at the margin, leaving the game knotted at 6 heading into the 9th. Bill Terry staved off elimination, slapping a single to score Luis Aparicio in a 7-6 win. Game was three win or else for Ozark. Wheatland provided a heaping portion of "or else" with a dominating 9-run, 15-hit bombardment to end the Bobcats' hopes. A valiant, 4-run effort in the 9th could not avoid the crowning of the idle Aina Haina Parakeets as the Our League S261 champions.

Annandale Clinches B213 Title In Extra Frames
It seems fitting that a team built on defense and pitching would clinch the Bronze 213 title in a fifteen inning pitcher's duel that played out over the course of six hours. But this was a game of twists and turns, and it's ironic that fielding errors played such a big role in the game's outcome. Baseball continues to surprise.
With a magic number of 1, Annandale came into the contest against Asheboro ready to slug it out. But the pitchers would allow nothing of the sort. Both Asheboro's Britt Burns and Annandale's Catfish Hunter were masterful. Each only allowed one run when they departed in the seventh. The starters were gone but the game went on scorelessly... to the eighth... ninth... still knotted 1-1... the tenth... twelfth.... fourteenth... pitchers were dominating. Finally, in the top of the fifteenth, Asheboro broke through. Bobby Bonilla singled leading off the inning. Dave Justice followed up with a single. And then to the crowd's horror, the Atom Smasher's Luis Aparicio booted a grounder to short, loading the bases. The call went to the bullpen, and Dick Donovan entered the game.... and promptly walked the lead run home! Bases loaded, still no outs.... Donovan coerced Darryl Strawberry to ground into a fielder's choice, nipping the runner at home plate. Then, seemingly regaining his composure, he struck out Paul Lo Duca, and retired Rickey Henderson on a flyball. Even so, the damage was done: the Road Dogs had a 2-1 lead. Asheville brought in Dave Jolly to shut the door. And for a while it looked like he'd do it - Devon White flew to left for the first out. Julio Franco followed with a single, but when Rico Carty struck out the Atom Smashers were down to their last out. With the pressure building, Jolly walked Shane Victorino on four pitches and loaded the bases with a five-pitch walk to Keith Hernandez. Then, with the crowd on the edge of their seats, Jolly walked Dom Dimaggio on a full count, forcing the tying run home. And in a bit of a payback from Lady Luck, Asheboro echoed Annandale's error in the top of the inning by committing one of their own, letting the winning run score! Annandale clinches! Final (and Correct) Our League B213 Standings
They say simple things mean a lot, especially if you're simple minded, which it seems I am. I neglected to make the final check of the standings, simply adding the wins and losses to make sure they match, and carried a mistake into the standings, and onto the "front page." I apologize for the error. Thankfully, except for making Annandale's win total a little less gaudy, it did not affect the order of finish, or the timing of their clinching, as far as I can tell. It seems fitting punishment that, besides my public shaming, the Asylum Keepers slid into the basement. My other teams, the Terra Incognita Rustlers and Port Ruppert Mundys, also were cellar dwellers. Hmm...maybe I am simple.

Bluffton Boomerangs prepare to join Our League in Syle by reaching playoffs in I192
Led by Kevin Kiermaier's steady defense, solid hitting and great baserunning, powered by 20+ homers from Rocky Colavito and Bill NIcholson, with Rick Porcello and Gene Bearden anchoring a solid, if unexceptional staff, the Boomerangs won 96 games and ran away from the rest of the NC West Division. As they prepare for the playoffs, there are already rumors of reinforcements being marshaled for the 2022 season. Last edited by Boomcoach; 04-14-2019 at 07:15 AM. |

Annandale S3 Wrapup
Annandale played a few familiar faces to close out Season 3: Waffletown (0) at Annandale (3): Annandale swept the Syrups at home. The Atom Smashers' Keith Hernandez (.287/.362/.421) went 4-5 with three doubles in game 1 of the series to lead Annandale to a series sweep. Max Scherzer pitched the game, and had his best performance yet against Waffletown (I don't think he's ever recorded a victory against them though!) Asheboro (1) at Annandale (2): Annandale took two of three from visiting Asheboro. Asheboro's Granny Hamner (.292/.336/.467) battered Annandale pitching in the second game of the series, going 2-3 with a homer and two RBI, leading the visitors to a 8-3 win. In the rubber game of the series, Annandale's Claude Passeau (17-1, 2.83 ERA) pitched a 4-hit shutout, and the Annandale bats woke up, leading the home team to an 8-0 victory. Annandale (1) at Asheboro (3): Asheboro won the four game series 3-1. The Road Dogs' Oliver Perez (14-14, 4.53 ERA) pitched well in game three of the series, scattering 4 hits over seven and two thirds innings as Asheboro won easily 6-3. In the fourth game of the series, Annandale salvaged a win when Shane Victorino (.270/.300/.393) singled home two runs in the top of the twelfth for a 6-4 win. Welcome aboard Bluffton Boomerangs! You might want to hire a team dietician to counsel your players about their eating habits on the road. Depending on where you end up, your players will be tempted by a vast array of gastric delights. The Asheboro Road Dogs serve up the Route 66 Royal Road Dog, a secret wiener recipe that checks in at 2000+ calories a serving. Then there's the Annandale Atom Smashers' Large Hadron Hamburger Collider, another 2000+ offering. The Philadelphia Patriots have authored a truce between Geno's and Pat's, and those two most venerable purveyors of cheese steak have combined to create the Formidable Flag Waver, a 3000+ sub resting in Amoroso rolls baked on the premises. In honor of their their theme song, "Psychotic Reaction," The Asylum Keepers cook up The Count Five, a quintuple layer concoction whose calorie count they won't even reveal. Then there's the Kaneohe Mokes' loco moco to contend with. I could continue, but I fear you'll be reaching for the Maalox, and reconsidering your meal money budget and I don't want to be the cause of dissension on your squad. A look just at the names of possible opponents, such as the Waffletown Syrups, the Mudville Muffins, the Daytona Beach Pickleballers, etc., etc, etc., should warn you that the road you are soon to travel is fraught with flavorful red flags. By the way, be sure to visit the Wheatland Jets artisan bakery.

I had wondered about multiple level promotions and my post was answered to the effect that it was a one time thing for the first week. I am still quite puzzled by the Port Ruppert Mundys, who finished at 63-99 in G318, tied for the third worst record, being listed for promotion, along with the other 63-99 team, while two teams who beat us by 27 games are not. I hope it's a graphics bug, because I was Mets fan in '62 and, being a kid, died 120 times that year. |

Seems a bit weird quoting myself, but I got an answer to my post, and was told it's a display bug. The correct list will be up after the playoffs start simming. Whew! It's a relief to know that, after stinking up my current level(s), it won't go further downhill. |

Playoff Watch: Our League Teams to Root For
Both S261 and B213 give us the hope of an Our League World Series match-up, with a playoff team in each conference. I235 has a single Our League entry.
Here's hoping the Parakeets fly high, The Jets soar, the Atoms are smashing, Battery proves its point, and the Pickleballers jar their opponents. |
