Montreal Canadiens Stats and Musings

The Canadiens arrive at the trade deadline with the best record in the NHL. A complete turnaround from the 24-41-7 record for 55 points last year. Baring a complete disaster over the final 22 games, the Canadiens are 20 points ahead of the 3rd place Devils fighting for 1 of 2 playoff spots in the Atlantic. The question is..... do we do anything that could screw up the chemistry of the team at the deadline? Do we have any serious needs? The team is ranked 1st in goals against giving up just 75 goals in 50 games, the closest team to the Habs is the Rangers and they have given up 94 goals. Montreal is 2nd in scoring with 142 goals, just 4 goals behind the top scoring Red Wings with 146. The only area we could possibly address would be that the Canadiens are ranked 20th in hits, could we find a forward that could address that need?

In goal the Canadiens have a fantastic 1-2 punch. Bill Wolfenbarger has set a career high for wins and has nearly a 3rd of the season left. Martin King has been stellar in relief, his best GAA for his career going into the season was 2.92 in 2000-01 in 28 games.

The Canadiens don't expect a lot of offense from their defense. Thornton leads the way in scoring and ice time with over 24 minutes per game. He is usually paired with Heatherington who is averaging 22 minutes per game. Reynolds is slowly seeing his ice time reduced over the past 4 seasons, 1 because of age and 2 because of the depth Montreal has now on D. Montreal have Heatherington, Lavoie and Thornton all on expiring contracts at the end of the year.

Patrick Atkins is a good looking rookie, he leads all rookie forwards in points in the NHL this season. Atkins also leads the Habs with 7 PPG this year. We talked about hits earlier, Randolph Lott leads the team with 96 hits, Emile Boudreau is 2nd at 84. This is an area Montreal may explore during the trade deadline before February 1st. Montreal has the following forwards on expiring contracts, Boudreau, Wass, Casey, Courcy, Wheeler and Mariani.
