Off-season (part 2)

I clearly didn't get the salary cap - I have too many players with NHL (only) contracts (being $1,400,000 above cap). Luckily an injury in the preseason keeps me below the cap at season start.

If need be I have identified a player to move down to the AHL (waiving) and hopefully will not get picked up by someone else.

Detroit goes 3-4 during the pre-season. Team doesn't look as good as last season.

Line 1: Zetterberg - Larkin - Nyquist / Kronwall - Stone
Line 2: Jurco - Helm - Athanasiou / Smith - Ericsson
Line 3: Abdelkader - Nielsen - Sheahan / Green - Marchenko
Line 4: Bertuzzi - Glendening - Mantha
Mrazek and Howard

Team performance

Detroit's overall team performance is improving.

Dylan Larkin has scored 7 goals in both October and November for 14 goals and 15 assists. Hope this will be a breakout season.

Mike Stone (free agent pickup) has 5 goals and 13 assists.

Has the way you've played in the second season differed that much from the first? Larkin is in some great form, how do you have that line set up? Is it same roles as the last time you showed lines still?

I believe during my first year, I used Cycling / Left Wing Lock for almost all the games and Larkin was on the second line mostly. He has been the first line center all year using the below two strategies the most.

I determine who to dress each game, which strategy and then I let the AI select the lines (occasionally I will adjust the players role.

I also believe this year Zetterberg has been in a "playmaker role" on Larkin's line. Hope that helps.

Team Performance

We are doing well on the offensive side, improving to 11th in the league. Our goaltending is keeping us in games - I don't think we could ask them for more.

We do need to work on our power play, our last 5 games we went 0-22 - definitely room for improvement. Our PK is hitting on all cylinders now.

Strategies

I used "Cycling" and "Left Wing Lock" last year and we came in the season with the "5 circle" rating for familiarity on each.

As you can see below I used a few different strategies. Currently, we a "5 circle" rating with Cycling, "4 circle" rating with Left Wing Lock, and "2 circle" rating with Neutral Zone Trap. All others are "1 circle" ratings.

I am not sure how I can work to improve the ratings.

I didn’t record strategy for my first 4 games.

January 2018

January 2018

Detroit has its first none winning month of the season going 6-6-2. The Wings fall to 2nd in the Atlantic Division and remain 4th in the conference. There were several defensive injures that kept key players off the ice. We have to take actions to improve the power play! Offensively we only scored 38 goals (2.71/game) while giving up 35 goals.

Detroit’s Players of the Month: Larkin (9goals, 7 assists, 16 points), Tatar (1 goal, 12 assists, 13 points)

Jan 2 – @ Montreal (5-1) (W) Bertuzzi (10), Zetterberg 2 (7, 8), Green (4), Mantha (4) [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]
Jan 4 – New Jersey (4-0 ) (W) Green (5), Stone (7), Glendening (3), Bertuzzi (11). [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]
Jan 6 – @ Pittsburgh (1-2) (L) Zetterberg (9). [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]
Jan 7 – Ottawa (0-3) (L) Our first game without a score. [Cycling / Neutral Zone Trap]
Jan 10 – Arizona (2-4) (L) Larkin (20), Bertuzzi (12). [Cycling / Neutral Zone Trap]
Jan 12 – @ New York Rangers (5-3) (W) Zetterberg (10), Larkin (21), Athanasiou (10), Smith (2), Nielsen (13). Marchenko injured (strained hamstring – 3 weeks), Smith injured (elbow – 1 to 2 weeks) [Cycling / Neutral Zone Trap]

The injury bug has arrived – currently 3 defensemen (Kronwall, Smith, and Marchenko) are out. Now to figure out whom we bring up to fill the gaps.

Jan 17 – Ottawa (2-3) (OT-L) Nielsen (14), Stone (8). [Cycling / Neutral Zone Trap]
Jan 19 – @ Carolina (1-3) (L) Larkin (22). [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]

Jan 24 –@ Chicago (2-3) (OT-L) Larkin (26), Bertuzzi (14). [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]
Jan 26 – @ Calgary (0-3) (L) Our second game without a score. [Cycling / Left Wing Lock]
Jan 28 – Nashville (7-3) (W) Larkin (27), Zetterberg (11), Green 2 (6, 7), Athanasiou (11), Nyquist (14), Glendening (4). [Torpedo Attack / Left Wing Lock]

Team Performance and Strategies

I am going to work on the power play strategies this month - we need to improve.

As you can see the Cycling/Neutral Zone Trap has produced some wins. Interestingly, the Torpedo Attack/Left Wing Lock has produced 13 goals for and 5 goal against. Maybe I should use it more.
