Walkers news: May 3 -- St. Louis 7, Quad City 4

Record: 16-8, 1st, 3 GA Des Moines

Michael Conforto powered a 3-2 pitch from Quad City's Luke Gregerson 408 feet into the right-field seats for a three-run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the St. Louis River Walkers a 7-4 win over the Thunder at Busch Stadium.
With the victory, the Walkers took two of three from the Thunder. Both wins coming via walk-off homers, Michael Conforto hit a walk-off in the ninth inning of the opener to give St. Louis the win.
For the third straight game, the Walkers led early only to have Quad City come back to tie it.
This time, St. Louis was up 4-2 only to have the Thunder score once each in the sixth (solo homer from Lucas Duda) and seventh (Wil Myers RBI single) to even it.
St. Louis starter Kyle Hendricks went 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, before exiting.
Six relievers followed him to the mound -- Grant Dayton (0.2 IP), Phil Maton (0.1), Reyes Moronta (1.2), Tony Gonsolin (2.0), Daniel Hudson (1.1) and Luis Gohara (0.2) -- with Gohara getting the win.
Gohara is the scheduled starter for the Walkers next game, but obviously will have to skip his turn through the rotation.
Duda hit two homers for the Thunder, both solo shots off Hendricks.

Walkers news: May 6 -- Des Moines 9, St. Louis 3

Des Moines beat up on a weary St. Louis pitching staff, posting a 9-3 win at Busch Stadium to complete a three-game sweep and move into a tie for first place in the NL South Division.
The Harvesters won the the first games by the score of 7-2, outscoring St. Louis 23-7 in the series.

Both its starting rotation and bullpen decimated by extra inning games and short outings, the Walkers were forced to call up Henry Sosa from AA Springfield to make an emergency start.
It did not go well.
The Walkers actually scored three runs in the first -- Andrew Benintendi driving in two of them with a double off Harvesters starting pitcher Zach Wheeler -- but Des Moines took control with a four-run outburst against Sosa in the third.
The first run scored on a play where Sosa made a throwing error. The second when he threw a wild pitch.
A.J. Pollack then smacked a two-run double, making it 5-3.
With no rested pitchers in the bullpen, Sosa had to stay out there as Des Moines increased its lead to 9-3.
Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer in the top of the fifth to do most of the damage.
Wheeler allowed three runs on six hits over the first five innings.

Four relievers combined to shut out St. Louis the rest of the way -- Max Fried (1.1 IP), Bo Schultz (0.2), Bryan Garcia (1.1) and Rory Stevens (0.2) -- as the Harvesters grabbed a share of the lead in the NL South.

Walkers news: May 9 -- St. Louis 7, Grand Rapids 1

Record: 17-12, 2nd, 1 GB Des Moines
Kyle Hendricks supplied the St. Louis River Walkers with the starting pitching performance they have so desperately needed, allowing one run over seven innings to pave the way for a 7-1 win over Grand Rapids at the Polo Grounds.
The victory ended a four-game losing streak for St. Louis.

The Traders actually struck first, Hendricks allowing three first inning singles -- the last of which from Kris Bryant scored Jean Segura who had opened the inning with a single.

Hendricks was dominant after that, not allowing a hit over the next six innings. He struck out four and walked none.
St. Louis took control in the fourth inning when they clubbed three home runs off rookie Touki Toussaint.
Andrew Benintendi led off the inning with a homer.
After a walk to Rhys Hoskins, Tucker Barnhart hit a two-run blast. The next batter, Eduardo Nunez also went deep.
The Walkers, however, were not finished with Toussaint who suffered all the damage.

Ender Inciarte drove in the inning's fifth run with a single. An Albert Almora double then scored Inciarte.

Walkers news: May 10 -- Grand Rapids 8, St. Louis 2

Record: 17-13, 2nd (Tied/w. Cedar Rapids), 2 GB Des Moines
Kris Bryant hit a first-inning grand slam off St. Louis starting pitcher Trevor Bauer and Grand Rapids was well on its way to an 8-2 win at the Polo Grounds.
With the win, the Traders took two of three from the River Walkers.
Things could not have started any worse for Bauer, who allowed singles to Jean Segura, Christian Yellich and Juan Soto to open the game before Bryant smacked one of his pitches 426-feet into the right-field seats.
The Traders lead grew to 8-0 in the bottom of the fifth, when Marwin Gonzalez collected a two-run single off reliever John Curtiss.
Grand Rapids starter Robbie Ray went five innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked three.
Three relievers -- Dae-Su Moon (1.0), Cody Allen (2.0) and Shane McClanahan (1.0) -- combined to shutout the Walkers the rest of the way.

Walkers news: May 12 -- Evansville 9, St. Louis 8

Record: 17-14, 3rd, 3 GB Des Moines
Andrelton Simmons with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off St. Louis reliever Reyes Moronta to score Jose Ramirez with the game-winning run, as Evansville defeated the River Walkers 9-8 at Yankee Stadium.
Ramirez had drawn a two-out walk and then stole second, putting himself in position to score for Simmons.
A five-run bottom of the third inning for Evansville -- highlighted by a two-run double from Yasiel Puig, a RBI single from Simmons and a bases-loaded walk to Phil Ervin -- had put the Big Bossemen in front 6-2 and chased St. Louis starting Luis Gohara from the game.
But the Walkers answered with four runs in the top of the fourth to tie it. Jin-hwan Chung had the big blow with a three-run homer off Bossemen starter Chad Kuhl.
St. Louis later led 7-6, only to fall behind 8-7.
The Walkers tied it at 8 in the top of the ninth on an RBI double from Manny Pina off reliever Carlos Estevez.
Kuhl lasted just three innings allowing six runs on eight hits.
Evansville used five relievers to finish the game off -- Jario Labourt (2.0 IP), Danny Farquhar (1.0), Sam Tuivailala (1.0), Jacob Lindgren (1.0) and Estevez (1.0) -- to finish the game off.
Simmons was 4 for 4 with four RBIs.

Walkers news: May 14 -- St. Louis 1, Evansville 0

Record: 19-14, 2nd (Tied/w. Cedar Rapids), 2 GB Des Moines
Danny Duffy pitched seven shutout innings and Michael Conforto provided the game's only run with a home run off Evansville starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija in the fourth inning, as the St. Louis River Walkers defeated the Big Bosseman 1-0 at Yankee Stadium.
With the win, the River Walkers took two of three in the series in Evansville.

Duffy allowed six baserunners, allowing four hits while walking two. He struck out six.
Conforto's 360-foot home run came on the third pitch of the fourth inning.
Daniel Hudson pitched both the eighth and ninth innings for St. Louis -- he walked one but allowed no hits -- to earn his first save of the season.

Walkers news: May 15 -- Cedar Rapids 7, St. Louis 5

Record: 19-15, 3rd, 3 GB Des Moines
The Cedar Rapids Golden Grapplers hit two homers in both the first and seventh innings to pave the way for a 7-5 win over the St. Louis River Walkers at Shibe Park.
All the damage was done against Walkers starter Kyle Hendricks.
In the first inning. Hendricks allowed a lead-off double to Victor Robles.
Keon Broxton followed with a two-run homer and Dominic Smith hit a solo shot.
St. Louis rallied to tie the game at 3, but may have made a mistake sending Hendricks out to pitch the seventh inning.
He walked Nick Williams to open the inning, then, after recording a strike out, Trevor Story got to him for a two-run shot.
Looking to squeeze a couple more batters out of Hendricks didn't work out well either, as after recording a fly out for the second out James McCann slammed a 434-foot shot to make it 6-3.
Cedar Rapids added an insurance run in the eighth on a Matt Duffy double of Keone Kela.
The appearance was Kela's first since coming off the disabled list and only second of the season.

Kela left the game with a strained shoulder after Duffy's hit.

Both his appearances in the majors this season have lasted just one batter, after which he left with an injury.
Kela was probably the top closer in the NL in 2019, when he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in late August. He's been injury-plagued ever since.
Grapplers starter Chris Archer lasted 5.1 innings, allowing all three St. Louis runs.
He was followed to the mound by five relievers -- Ryan Pressley (1.1 IP), Ben Bowden (0.1), Tommy Kahnle (0.1), Tyler Bashlor (0.2) and Danny Grigg (1.0) -- with Bowden earning his third win of the season.
Grigg picked up save No. 10.

Walkers news: May 17 -- St. Louis 6, Cedar Rapids 5

Record: 21-15, 2nd, 3 GB Des Moines
Down 2-1, St. Louis scored twice in the fifth inning and three times in the eighth and then held on for a 6-5 win over Cedar Rapids at Shibe Park.
With the win, the River Walkers took the final two games of the three-game weekend series.
Jin-hwan Chung hit a solo homer off Golden Grapplers starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka to open the top of the fifth and tie the game.
Adeiny Hechavarria later singled. A sacrifice bunt from pitcher Luis Gohara moved him to second and he gave St. Louis the lead when he scored when Ender Inciarte reached on an error by Cedar Rapids first baseman Dominic Smith.
The three runs St. Louis added in the eighth inning proved to be more than insurance.
The bulk of the damage was self-inflicted by the Grapplers, as bases-loaded walks issued by Tommy Kahnle to Nicky Delmonico, Chung and Tucker Barnhart scored all three of the runs.
A triple from Matt Duffy off Tony Gonsolin scored two, and drew the Grapplers within 8-7.
However, the Walkers kept Duffy from scoring and Phil Maton, who had recorded the third out of the eighth, pitched around a walk in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Gohara allowed two run on six hits over the first five innings and earned the win.
Four relievers -- Daniel Hudson (2.0), Gonsolin (0.1), Grant Dayton (0.1) and Maton (1.1) --combined to finish off the game.

Walkers news: May 20 -- St. Louis 15, Kansas City 0

Kyle Hendricks and reliever Josh Lindgren combined to pitch a shutout and St. Louis cranked out four home runs in a 15-0 win over Kansas City to complete a three-game sweep at Busch Stadium.
Hendricks handled the first seven innings, allowing just two hits while striking out nine and walking two.
The game already in hand, the River Walkers led 15-0 when he entered, Lindgren still looked strong in his first game since being claimed off of waivers allowing one hit while recording all six outs via Ks.
Andrew Benintendi, Nicky Delmoncio, Ender Inciarte and Manny Pina all went deep for the Walkers.

Inciarte's second-inning grand slam off Kansas City starter Dinelson Lamet made it 5-0.
A solo homer from Benintendi and a three-run shot by Delmonico would make it 11-0 after four innings.

Walkers news: May 22 -- St. Louis 7, Quad City 5

Record: 25-15, 2nd, 1 GB Des Moines
St. Louis scored at least one run in each of the first five innings, paving the way for a 7-5 win over Quad City at Busch Stadium.
The victory was the sixth in a row for the River Walkers.
The Thunder took leads of 2-0 and 3-1, only to see the Walkers rally on both occasions.

St. Louis took the lead in the bottom of the third when Tucker Barnhart connected for a two-run single off Thunder starting pitcher Franklin Perez, putting it up 4-3.

Rhys Hoskins connected for a two-run homer off Perez in the fourth, expanding that advantage to 6-3.

Nicky Delmonico doubled off reliever Matt Ruppenthal in the fifth inning, and scored on a single by pitcher Trevor Bauer, which included an error by left fielder Derek Fisher.
Quad City scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, pulling to within 7-5.
But four relievers -- Bobby Poyner (0.2 IP), Daniel Hudson (0.2), Phil Maton (0.1) and Jake Diekman (1.2) - combined to shutout the Thunders over the final 3.1 innings to seal the win.
St. Louis starter Trevor Bauer wasn't at his sharpest but still managed to go 5.2 innings giving up five runs on seven hits.

Walkers news: May 23 -- Quad City 6, St. Louis 5

Record: 25-16, 2nd, 2 GB Des Moines
Orlando Arcia drew a bases-loaded walk from St. Louis Reyes Moronta with two outs in the top of the ninth to snap a 5-5 tie and help give Quad City a 6-5 win at Busch Stadium.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for the River Walkers.
Lucas Duda had opened the ninth with a double off St. Louis reliever Bobby Poyner.
The Walkers then went to Moronto, who has been their most consistent reliever in a bullpen which has struggled this season.
It didn't work out well.
A Will Myers bunt moved Duda to third. Scott Kingery followed with a strikeout, but left-handed hitter Cedric Mullins was walked to bring righty hitter Anthony Alford to the plate.
Moronto could not find the plate, giving Alford a pass to load the bases.
He followed with another base-on-balls to Arica, sending Duda trotting home.
Quad City's comeback overshadowed five innings of no-hit ball pitched by St. Louis starter Luiz Gohara.
While Gohara was dealing, the Walkers built themselves a 5-0 lead on the strength of a two-run home run from Tucker Barnhart in the second inning and a Jin-hwan Chung in the fourth.
Both homers were surrendered by Thunder starting pitcher Jose Almonte.
However, it fell part in a hurry for Gohara in the sixth.
Scott Kingery led off with a double and scored on an Alford single.
Arcia followed with a two-run homer and Justin Turner hit a solo blast, and suddenly it was 5-4.
The Thunder tied it in the seventh, when Kingery blasted a two-out solo shot off Phil Maton.
Almonte exited after four innings, giving up all five St. Louis runs.
He was followed by -- Jesse Hahn, J.D. Hammer, Ryan Buchter, Matt Ruppenthal and Craig Kimbrel -- who all pitched a scoreless inning apiece.
Ruppenthal came away with the win, his first of the season. Kimbrel notched his seventh save.

Walkers news: May 24 -- Quad City 8, St. Louis 4

Record: 25-17, 2nd, 3 GB Des Moines
Tied 4-4, the Quad City Thunder scored once in the seventh inning and four times in the eighth, opening the door for an 8-4 win over the St. Louis River Walkers at Busch Stadium.
With the win, Quad City took the final two games of the three-game series.
Down 4-1, St. Louis rallied to even the score by scoring twice in the fifth inning -- two-run homer from Andrew Benintendi -- and once in the sixth -- pinch-hit double from Albert Almora -- but it would not stay tied for long.
Scott Kingery greeted just entered Walkers reliever Grant Dayton with a solo homer, hitting the first pitch 427 feet, to open the seventh inning.
The eighth opened the same way, Lucas Duda with a lead-off solo homer -- also off Dayton.
Kingery, who finished the game 4 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs, later added an RBI single off Tony Gonsolin.
Meibrys Viloria followed with a run-scoring double, also off Gonsolin.
Thunder starting pitcher Mike Fiers exited with a tired arm after 4.2 innings, during which he allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits.
Five relievers combined to limit the River Walkers to a single run the rest of the way.
P.J. Conlan, who finished the fifth inning and pitched all of the sixth earned his first win of the season.

Walkers news: May 25 -- Springfield 5, St. Louis 4

Record: 25-18, 2nd, 3 4 GB Des Moines
Michael Bentley had a two-run double and Tomas Telis followed with another two-bagger, scoring one, as Springfield scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning snapping a 2-2 tie and paving the way for a 5-4 win over the St. Louis River Walkers.
Danny Duffy was the pitcher on the mound for all three of the runs. The loss was the third in a row for St. Louis.
A two-run homer from Andrew Benintendi in the top of the eighth inning off Eduardo Paredes, pulled St.Louis within a run.
Earlier, Benintendi had hit a solo homer off Springfield starter Pablo Lopez in the sixth inning, tying it at 2-2.

But that would be the Walkers final run.

Mason McCullough and Nathan Karns combined to keep them off the board the remainder of the eighth.
Carl Edwards Jr. was spotless in the ninth for his 12th save.
Lopez lasted five innings, giving up two runs on six hits.

Walkers news: May 26 -- Springfield 8, St. Louis 3

Record: 25-19, 2nd, 5 GB Des Moines
Springfield poured across six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and open the door for an 8-3 win over the St. Louis River Walkers at Olympic Stadium.
The loss was the fourth in a row for St.Louis.
Max Schrock opened the inning by reaching on an error by shortstop Brock Holt.
That should have been an harbinger.
Mookie Betts followed with a double, scoring Schrock to tie it at 3-3.
Bobby Poyner then replaced starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks.
He didn't retire anyone.
Freddie Freeman had an RBI double. Travis Shaw walked and Michael Brantley loaded the bases with another single.

Jake Diekman then got the ball.
Winner of the award as the top reliever in the NL in 2019, he has been nothing close to that this season.
And that continued.
First, catcher Tucker Barnhart allowed a pitch to get past him allowing a run to score.

6-3.
He walked Jason Castro, but then struck out Abiatal Avelino for the second out.
A Ryan Mountcastle sacrifice fly scored a run.
7-3.

Delino DeShields Jr. drew a walk, loading the bases.
(Pissed off, at this point, with an exhausted bullpen, I was leaving Diekman out there to climb out of his own grave).
Max Schrock, a lefty hitting against a supposed lefty specialist, drove in two more runs with a single.

8-3.
The Walkers did little else over the final three innings, as they bowed out with a whimper.
Springfield starter Alex Reyes went four innings, allowing a pair of runs on two hits.

Sam Freeman, who recorded the final two outs of the sixth inning earned the win, as the Prairie Fighters used four relievers to close out the game.

Walker news: May 27 -- Springfield 4, St. Louis 2

Josh Hader and six relievers combined to shut out St. Louis for eight innings and Carl Edwards held off a big threat in the ninth as the Springfield Prairie Fighters defeated the River Walkers 4-2 at Olympic Stadium to complete a three-game sweep.

The loss was the fifth in a row for St. Louis.
Hader was dominant in his 5.1 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out six and walking two.
A chorus line of relievers followed him to the mound, keeping it scoreless going into the ninth.
The Walkers finally mustered something putting four straight batters aboard to pull within 4-2 with one out.
But Edwards struck out Manny Pina, and after a walk to Brock Holt which put runners at first and second, he got Albert Almora to hit into a fielder's choice to end it.
Springfield methodically built a 4-0 lead against St. Louis starter Trevor Bauer, scoring single runs in the first, second and third innings.
A Mookie Betts two-out single off Phil Maton scored Delino DeShields with the Fighters' fourth run.
DeShields was 3 for 3 in the game, with a homer and two RBIs.

Walkers news: May 28 -- Madison 6, St. Louis 5

Record: 25-21, 2nd (Tied/w. Cedar Rapids), 6 GB Des Moines
Kevin Kiermeier doubled off St. Louis reliever Bobby Poyner to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning and scored on a one-out single by Brandon Nimmo off Jacob Lindgren, to score the winning run in a 6-5 Madison victory at Comiskey Park.
The loss extended the River Walkers losing streak to six games.
A two-run home run from the Muskies' Mike Zunino off Walkers starting pitcher Luis Gohara highlighted a three-run first for the home team.
But St. Louis hung around and tied it in the top of the fourth, when Jin-hwan Chung hit a two-run homer off Muskies reliever Zach Phillips.
An RBI single from Andrew Benintendi off reliever Drew Steckenrider in the seven inning later put St. Louis ahead 5-4.
Only to see the Muskies even it in the bottom half of the seventh, when pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson ripped a run-scoring triple off reliever Reyes Moronta.
That set the stage for Nimmo's game-winning hit off Lindgren an inning later.
It took seven relievers for Madison to pull out the win after starter Ruby De la Rosa left with two outs in the first inning with wrist soreness.
Luke Jackson (2.2 IP), Phillips (1.1), Juan Minaya (1.0), Steckenrider (1.0), Jared Miller (0.0), Koda Glover (0.1) and Corey Knebel (1.2) combined to finish the game off.
Knebel recorded the final five outs to earn his second win of the season.
