Before she died, Ludmila Lukska made her son promise that he would go back to baseball. The senior at Northwestern had been a central part of the school's baseball team in his freshman and sophomore years until his mother's cancer became an issue. That meant that any time he didn't spend in the classroom, he spent in Boston making sure she was okay.

However, as her time came drew closer, she implored her son not to give up on the thing he loved. Grief was to be expected but she had already taken enough baseball away from him.
--
He hadn't played enough ball in college to attract a place in the draft. So instead, he took his talents to the five-team 'Massachusetts-Connecticut Independent Baseball League', signing with the Worcester Golden Bears. Farel, a shortstop, was never a prolific hitter but he had a damn fine eye, enviable plate discipline and well above average fielding abilities.

During the 112-game regular season, Farel hit .236 in 406 at-bats across 112 games. He went yard 12 times, including a grand slam against the Springfield Legion on August 9th. Notably, he also received 81 free trips to first, best for joint second in the league. That helped him reach his OPS of .759, along with his WAR of 5.6. In the field, Farel had 141 putouts, 321 assists and credited with 79 double plays, while only committing 7 errors. Overall he earned a field efficiency of 1.034.

In the clubhouse, Farel began the season quiet. He was polite but the shadow of his mother's death weighed on him. However, game after game, he began to grow into a charming and sociable part of the team. Soon enough, his ability to lead began to shine through. His tall, muscular build, stylishly ruddy beard and fondness for nature quickly earned him the nickname "Forest God".

Worcester finished 65-47, good enough for #1 seed in the end of the season playoffs. They met #4 seed Springfield in the semifinals. Across the 4-game series, which Springfield won 3-1, Farel went cold, batting 3-for-15 with 2 walks and 2 rbi.

Despite this playoff slump, Farel was named Rookie of the Year and awarded the Platinum Bat at Shortstop.
--
He had welcomed baseball back into his life but the MACTIBL felt too small now. Besides, there was a call coming in from Citi Field...

The Mets were impressed. They had seen Farel in Worcester and wanted his discipline in their system. His hitting was not the most desirable but there was every chance that he could improve. After offering him a minor league contract, he was sent to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Mets' short season affiliate.

Farel suited up in the white jerseys for 42 games while adjusting to life in a small Coney Island apartment. As he acclimatised to the major league farm system, he build a small life for himself in New York, going as far as to start a relationship with a nurse, Jennifer Holland.

Farel batted .267 in 116 at-bats. However his power and extra-base stats were subpar, with 1 home run and 4 extra-base hits total. He still managed a OPS of .670 but once again, it was his fielding that made him a valuable asset. 47 putouts, 72 assists and 18 double plays with a 1.034 fielding efficiency.

His leadership continued to improve and he developed into something of a sparkplug, lots of energy that invigorated the clubhouse and the field. While not the captain of the team, his teammates certainly looked to him for inspiration.
--
Despite this, the Mets seemed unimpressed. In early December, Farel was told that he was being sent down to the rookie class Kingsport Mets in Tennessee. He ended things with Jennifer and packed his bags for Tennessee, unsure of what the future held but eager to find out.

Things were rough for Farel over the coming years. He only lasted 19 games in Kingsport before the Mets cut him.

Out of baseball, he settled down in the Tennessee city and worked what odd jobs he could- bartender, personal trainer, baseball tutor. He garnered a sort of folk hero reputation, largely due to his humility, kindness and genuine compassion for others. He could be seen a church every Sunday and served as a reliable bartender.

It might have been the end of his sporting career but he was happy, content that he could do this now.

2022

Early in 2022, as Farel enjoyed iced tea on the porch of his neighbour, he received a call from the front office of the Atlanta Braves. It seemed as he was gone but not forgotten in the world of baseball. He was offered yet another minor league contract and a place on the Rome Braves. A week later, he was settling into a motel room 60 miles north of Atlanta. However, the 2022 season was fairly dismal for Farel. He hit just .157 across 62 for the Rome Braves and the Class A+ affiliate, the Florida Fire Frogs. What kept him viable was his defence- 118 putouts, 174 assists and 33 double plays. His defensive abilities meant that he could keep a place within the organisation.

However, he didn’t have long to enjoy Rome or Kissimmee as in early 2023, he was traded to the Cubs and told to report to Davenport and the DSL Cubs 2.

Things just kept on changing on the 25-year-old.

Tell me we haven't heard the last of Jennifer Holland? She has to pop up in his life again at some point, no?
(Not actually asking for spoilers here. These are basically rhetorical questions. )

2023

2023 was Farel's busiest year by far. As part of the Cubs organisation, he played his way through the DSL Cubs in Davenport; the Eugene Emeralds in Eugene and the South Bend Cubs in South Bend. Across these three clubs, Farel had a career year- .291 in 159 at-bats along with 6 home runs and 17 RBIs. The most impressive thing of the season was his 1.100 OPS. Doesn’t matter if the guy couldn’t hit dingers if he’s chilling on first base. This was coupled with a slightly down defensive which still saw him have a 100/100 putout/assist season.

So what lead to the shift from a struggling second basemen with underwhelming stats to a genuine prospect who any developing franchise would be happy to have in their system? Well it sounds sappy but Farel was in love.

In Davenport, after a particularly underwhelming practice session with the DSL Cubs, Farel decided to take a walk. At a small, out of the way diner on the way of town, Farel struck conversation with a music teacher from Boston. Her name was Nimya Koehtil. Short, curvy and with unique brown hair that ended in a pure white tips (which she claimed was 100% natural), she was a breath of fresh air amongst the tans of Florida. The next thing they knew, the owner was trying to usher them out as he closed up to grab a few hours’ sleep before the breakfast rush.

Farel and Nimya saw a lot of each other over the coming weeks. For her, she was coming out of a bad breakup and found the wannabe baseball player to charming and sweet and genuine. In her, he found someone who was a fan of him, not his talent. The casual nature of their relationship became something more real. It was long distance as Nimya lived in Boston but almost every off-day he had, he spent it with her.

And at the end of the day, something changed within Farel, the talent he showed in the MACTIBL was unlocked once again. And he was happy- he had always been a good leader but there was even more energy in his attitude now. This was part of the reason he won the Midwest League Championship with South Bend.

At the end of the year, Farel was asked to take his talent to Iowa. The Cub’s AAA affiliate was based and clearly, the front office wanted him closer to the majors.

2024

Farel spent the entire year at AAA, playing for the Iowa Cubs as their leadoff hitter. In 134 games, he hit .205 with 6 home runs and 56 RBIs. But as we know by this point, Farel Lukska didn’t need at bat to get on base. In the 2024 season, he recorded 107 walks and had an OPS of .663 with a WAR of 2.8. Defensively, he had a stellar year- making 223 putouts, recording 439 assists and participating in 79 double plays. As well as winning the International League Championship with Iowa, Farel would be awarded the Great Glove at 2B.

However, his year was not done. On October 2nd, Farel stepped onto the field at Wrigley Field, this time wearing a Cubs uniform for the first time. In a 5-2 loss to St Louis, Farel went 0-for-4. But he evidently showed enough promise that Chicago kept him up. While he went 0-for-10 with a walk in the final four games of the regular season, he was included as a late addition to the playoff roster. As Chicago made it to the NLCS against San Diego, Farel went 5-for-36 with 9 walks and an RBI. It wasn’t the greatest MLB debut but it had promise and there was a lot of interest in his story, and who he was. After all, every team could always do with a little bit of that moneyball magic- the guy who gets on base time after time.

Over the course of the season, Farel and Nimya continued to grow close. She was by no means a baseball fan but she appreciated what he did. And he wasn’t a showboating arrogant attention-seek shill like some of his teammates. The distance still made it difficult for the two of them but at the end of day, they were in love.

However, that would all change on New Year’s Day 2025. In a trade that shocked many baseball pundits, the Boston Red Sox traded declining left-fielder Andrew Benintendi to Chicago in exchange for Farel. While ESPN, SB Nation and all the other media outlets argued for or against the trade, Farel and Nimya went house-hunting, taking the opportunity of Farel’s relocation to move in together.

Full-time action in the majors was getting ever closer for Farel.

Farel played the entire AAA season with the Pawtucket Red Sox, commuting from his home in Brookline to the home games in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. In 128 games, he hit .214 along with 4 home runs and 36 RBIs. Once again, his primary asset came in the form of a .679 OPS along with 98 walks. In the field, he was once again exceptional, putting up yet another award-winning performance with 153 putouts, 413 assists and 62 double plays for a 1.057 efficiency.

After winning the International League Championship with the Sox, Farel was called up for the tail end of the Major League season, hitting .212 in 23 games with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs.

It was a simple season for Farel- he hit what he hit and ruled the infield.
Meanwhile, his relationship with Nimya only deepened. They had moved in together at just the right time in their relationship. He spent his off-days exploring the botanical gardens or the forests of Massachusetts with her.

For the first time, he was able to spend an off-season with Nimya in a home that he wasn’t renting or staying as a guest in. He was able to watch the Boston winter come and go with the woman he loved in his arms.

2026

When the 2026 season rolled around and the Kansas City Royals paid a visit to Fenway on opening day, Farel was hitting lead-off in the majors. After going 1-for-4 with a home run, Farel went on to have a breakout season. Hitting .260 in 154 games, he firmly established himself an integral part of the Red Sox line-up. Along with the best batting average of his career, he sent 16 balls deep and stole 30 bases as well as drawing a league leading 118 walks. Overall he ended up with an OPS of .808 and a WAR of 6.8. His prowess and fondness for the fans also earned him his first all-star appearance.

In the field, he reigned at second base. 225 putouts, 375 assists, 84 double plays and only 5 errors easily secured him his first major league Gold Glove award. On top of that, Farel’s performance during the season earned him AL Rookie of the Year. Despite this, the Red Sox finished 83-79 as they fell two games short of the wild card berth and missed the playoffs for the 5th straight season.

After the season, Farel settled in for another Boston winter with Nimya. However, by the time preseason rolled around, something had changed. In mid-November, Farel asked Nimya to marry him. In line with his personality, the proposal was small, sweet and personal. Nimya happily accepted.

A slightly less notable offseason event was the signing of starting pitcher Dan Termini by the New York Yankees. Drafted in 2021, Termini had been a major leaguer since 2024. He started with Miami before being traded to Kansas City. This meant that Farel started taking at-bats against Termini. A rivalry began between the two after Farel took him deep during their meeting. Termini took it personally and things heated up. In another twist, Termini, who was not afraid of the spotlight, was soon found to be dating a young, ambitious nurse by the name of Jennifer Holland. And with a 5-year, $110,000,000 contract, it was clear that he had the support of the Yankees.

With the two now in the same division, 2027 was going to be very interesting.

2027

Once again, Farel started the year as leadoff for the Red Sox. He was quickly becoming a fan favourite. He wasn’t afraid to talk to the media, no matter how small or independent the outlet was. He was humble in victory and gracious in defeat, always with a handshake and a good word for his opponents.

Farel played 154 games, missing 8 games in mid-August to marry Nimya in a small ceremony in Provincetown before spending a few nights away from Boston and baseball on Nantucket. Across the games he did play, Farel hit .233 with 8 home runs and 46 RBIs with a .703 OPS. That made him the 8th best hitter by average and 6th best by OPS. However, he led the team (and the majors) in walks with 110. In the field, Farel once again showed why it didn’t only matter about how hard you hit- 234 putouts, 407 assists and 114 double plays with an efficiency of 1.068 won him yet another Gold Glove.

With his rival Dan Termini now in New York, 2027 became a major point in their storyline. Farel went 9-for-9 against Rogers, including a magnificent walk-off home run to ruin a complete game shutout on September 7th. That led to the infamous ‘Wifegate’ incident. As Farel rounded the bases, Termini was seen throwing insults at him. And due to a technical error, the whole crowd heard the broadcast team debating what exactly Termini had been saying. The general consensus from the team in the booth was that Termini was making comments relating to Nimya. As the Red Sox were already on the field to cheer Farel home, they turned and immediately charged the mound. As they clashed with the Yankees stepping up to defend their pitcher, there were shouts from the crowd. A 5”6 blur had vaulted the dugout and was also charging the mound. Nimya, sat above the Red Sox dugout to cheer on her husband, had not taken kindly to Termini’s comments. She barrelled through pinstripes before tackling Termini and slapping him.

Given the extenuating circumstances, Nimya was politely asked to avoid attendance at Fenway for a year. However, it would prove largely unnecessary as Boston missed the playoffs by a game and quietly traded Farel to Minnesota early in the off-season. It wasn’t the worst thing for the couple- they both loved nature and were able to find a small cabin to rent outside Minneapolis. The Twins had gone 80-82 in 2027 but they had a strong, promising team including players like Royce Lewis and Taylor Trammell. The Twins could be Farel’s ticket to the playoffs.

2028

Farel quickly settled in at Target Field. Once again he was a dominant fielder- 271 putouts, 425 assists, 129 double plays, 1.035 efficiency in yet another gold glove-winning year. At the plate, he hit .220 in 160 games. While his run-scoring ability was unchanged (14 home runs and 52 RBIs), he remained a reliable base-getter with an OPS of .670, a league leading 110 walks as well as 27 stolen bases. However, Minnesota slumped late in the year and finished at .500.

Simple season, nothing special.

2029

In January 2029, Nimya announced to Farel that she was pregnant. They had been trying for several months and finally, it had worked out for them. However, due to the attention he paid to Nimya and the way that the pregnancy weighed on his mind, his hitting numbers slumped. .197 in 156 games with 11 home runs and 51 RBIs. His OPS dropped to .648 and his fielding numbers always slid as he missed out on a gold glove.

However, it was all worth it when he welcomed his daughter Iona into the world in mid-September. He took off a week, he and Nimya agreeing that the off-season would be his time to be the primary caregiver.

Minnesota made the playoffs as the second Wild Card team. Despite his down season, Farel was added to the playoff roster, an addition that paid off when he made a game-saving diving catch in the bottom of the ninth against the Rays in the Wild Card. The Twins fell in 3 games to the Royals but the groundwork was there for future playoff runs.

Farel spent the offseason happily learning the ropes of fatherhood. Nimya went back to limited work at the end of the year as Farel took some time off from training and missed a few weeks of spring training .

It might have been an off year for him but he was happy.

2030

The Twins’ search for back-to-back playoffs was quickly derailed as they stagnated around .500. On July 13th, with the Twins third in the AL Central (42-45), Farel was traded to the San Diego Padres for shortstop Xavier Edwards. Farel blossomed in southern California, going from a .186 average to .216 as part of the Padres line-up. He joined the Padres as they led the NL West at 54-36, by the end of the season they were 96-66, NL East champions.

They made short work of the Reds in the NLDS, sweeping them 3-0. The Diamondbacks were much of a challenge. The Padres fell 0-3 down in the series before rallying to tie the series. Game 6 of the NLCS featured not one but three brawls than saw a total of four players ejected. Game 7 was a brutal slugfest that went 13 innings. Farel went 4-for-4 with two walks, a home run and two RBIs in a 17-16 Padres win. This took the Padres to their first World Series since 2024, where they lost in 7 to Houston.

The AL champions turned out to be the New York Yankees. They were the defending World Series champions and had breezed through the Mariners and White Sox to reach back-to-back World Series since the 2000 & 2001 seasons. However, San Diego would gain home field advantage as New York went 91-71 to win the AL East.

The teams split games 1 and 2 before a game 3 at Yankee Stadium brought Farel up against Dom Termini. Termini hadn’t had a great 2030 season. The 32-year-old southpaw went 8-10 in 32 starts with a 4.31 ERA. The two men shook hands after the anthem and met in the match only once. In the second inning, with one out, the bat never left Farel’s shoulder as Termini pitched four outside the zone. That was the start of a 5-run rally that led to Termini being pinch hit for in the 3rd inning. The Yankees bounced back from the 12-3 loss by winning games four and five. A game 6 win for San Diego meant that the World Series went the distance. In the end, it wasn’t close- San Diego took an early lead and a 7-2 victory brought the World Series to San Diego for the first time in their history.

Overall, Farel hit .201 in 158 games with 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. He was a top-3 walks drawer with 113. His 3.0 WAR was boosted by his .677 OPS and strong defensive season. 271 putouts, 423 assists, 124 double plays and a defensive efficiency of 1.024.

Farel stayed in San Diego after receiving arbitration and looked forward to a potential title defence in 2031.

2031

2031 was a bounce-back year for Farel. He hit .219 in 159 games and lead the league in walks once again with 102. His defensive numbers were strong with 253 putouts, 416 assists and 101 double plays, earning him the 4th Gold Glove of his career.

San Diego went back to the playoffs, this time as the Wild Card. They hosted in the Braves but lost 3-2, ending their title defence at the very first hurdle. However, a wild card would make the run to the championship as Detroit went the distance, beating San Francisco in the World Series to claim the franchise’s first title since 2026.

2031 was also a big year for the league, as it expanded with two new East division teams. The AL East saw the Columbus Cadets while the Indianapolis Chickadees were add to the NL East. The Cadets went 72-90 in their first season while the Chickadees went 57-105.

On the home front, Farel and Nimya were tiring of a California lifestyle that just didn’t suit them. And so Farel turned down a contract extension with the Padres and tested free agency for the first time since he had joined the league in 2020.
He was a late acquisition but in January 2032, he signed a 5-year, $24,000,000 contract with the Rockies. The family moved to a quiet neighbourhood of Denver and Farel suited up in the purple, ready to play regularly in the vaunted Mile High.

2032

Farel was 36 in 2032 and played mostly off the bench for Colorado. Despite his age, he was still an excellent fielder and a fatherly presence in the clubhouse. He hit .236 in 103 games with 150 putouts, 245 assists and 79 double plays. However, he was just getting too old to be a viable member of a team.

Colorado went 71-91 in an underwhelming season.

2033

Despite his large contract with Colorado, Farel saw less time in his second season at Coors. He hit .191 in on 74 games with his fielding numbers taking a hit due to lack of opportunity. He was a veteran journeyman by this point and largely in Colorado for the PR. He was a gentleman and a fan favourite, someone who could appear with Youtubers and at events for young fans. He didn’t have any scandalous accusations to his name (except for Wifegate) and was just a nice presence to have in the stadium.

However, as the Rockies only improved to 77-85 and recorded another sub-.500 season (as they had down every season since 2026), the front office demanded a rebuild and Farel was traded to San Francisco for middling prospects.

2034

Farel played off the bench in San Francisco’s opening day loss to the Pirates. The following day he was released by the organisation. At that point Farel was ready to retire until a week later, Arizona offered him $1,000,000 to play out the season. Once again largely there for the PR, Farel hit .173 in 80 games. However, he had an up year in the field with 126 putouts, 186 assists and 58 double plays. It was nowhere near his Gold Glove seasons but it was a glimpse of the old Farel. The Diamondbacks went 79-83 (up from the 61-101 season they had had in 2033).

A few days after the season ended, Farel announced his announcement from professional baseball. He did with it a letter posted to all 32 front offices, with supplemental pages for the franchises he played for.

Career

Farel Lukska, the ‘Forest God’, played in 1226 major league games, managing a .218 average and an OPS of .681. He found himself on base 34.9% of the time and from there he stole 117 bases. He hit 81 home runs and drove in 357 runs while walking 788 times. His career WAR was 23.2.

Farel’s best contribution was in the field. While he started his career at shortstop, he played the majority of his games at second base. He managed 1668 putouts there, 2678 assists and 716 double plays with a .992 fielding percentage.
He won 2026 AL Rookie of the Year with Boston as well as 4 Gold Gloves (2026-2028, 2031), a World Series ring with San Diego in 2030 and was named an All-Star in 2026.

He appeared in a major league uniform for 7 teams but will be best remembered for the four seasons he spent in Boston.

Epilogue

Farel, Nimya and Iona moved back to Massachusetts after his retirement, purchasing a small house in Provincetown. Despite the two of them nearing their 40s, Farel was happy to let his wife choose the direction of their life for a while.
They grew up a happy family. Farel took a part-time job with the Provincetown Sailors, a team in the MACTIBL league where he had first found his start. Nimya set up her own musical tutor business and became a patron of the Cape Code Summer Music Festival. Iona, for her part, grew up to be a talented catcher in softball and even played professionally for a few years before settling down to be a sportswriter.

Farel didn’t make the Hall of Fame but he is remembered as a kind-hearted player with a genuine love for the game and its fans.

Thank you

This was my first thread on the OOTP Forums and I want to thank everyone that has read it. Farel has been my OC for a few years now and this is the first time I’ve really put him into something outside of my usual writing projects.

If you liked my work, please think about giving it a share with your fellow baseball friends. I am sure that I will be back with another story thread very soon. If you have any ideas for something you would want me to turn into a thread, let me know as I’d love to hear it.

It was enjoyable to follow along.
I was glad also to see Farel have a little stretch of time, even if it was as his career was in decline, here in my chosen city of Denver, Colorado.

Perhaps someday we will see Iona playing for a few years in the WBLA.
