Dennis Bennett 1962
I've seen (and posted) a wire shot of Bennett seen at his clubhouse cubicle during his very brief stay with the 1967 Mets (they traded for him on June 24 and sent him to AAA after his last appearance July 31, and was also idle for two weeks in that span).
But this image is from an actual Mets' publicity photo up for bid on eBay: 1967 Dennis Bennett New York Mets White Borders Baseball Photo | eBay Nothing has yet turned up of Bennett in New York in color. |

I thought this image was a little better version of the one in the Facepack.

A slight improvement over the previously posted image of this brief Major Leaguer.

PLEASE, Lunpkin, stop quoting previous posts in full. It wastes a lot of space.

Vince Ferguson
Here he is in Braves uniform. Don't know from which year. Do know that he was on their spring roster in 1966.

Belated Vault IDs
Don't know if I was the only one who did not have these ID'd, but have confirmed from other Vault images that HF 963-964 is Oakland prospect pitcher Bill Van Bommel.
My checklist did not have these two images ID'd. |

Don Larsen 1953
Since SI has now posted and published some images from my collection (Don Larsen's 1956 World Series perfect game in rare color photos | SI.com) which are the only known color images of Don Larsen's perfect game, I thought I should provide some detail they have chosen not to.
This hazy look from left-centerfield actually shows Hank Bauer's RBI single in the 6th Inning that made it 2-0 Yankees. Andy Carey is scoring, Sandy Amoros is just releasing his throw back from left, and the figure pointing is none other than losing pitcher Sal Maglie, making sure Amoros throws to second and not home. Sandy Koufax 1955 and Don Drysdale 1956
One more "detail" from my Larsen Perfect Game photos posted at SI.com today.
Their caption is correct. The Dodger pitcher running pre-game in the Yankee outfield is indeed Sandy Koufax. But standing closer to the camera, wearing number 53? That's rookie Don Drysdale (and next to him is either #40 Roger Craig or #41 Clem Labine). (C) Keith Olbermann |

So, How Did Larsen Pitch A Perfect Game?
SI missed the obvious (and the note I gave them). This nice image of the flag being raised during the anthem before Larsen's perfecto also explained why he threw them.
As seen in the detail, that framework just to the left of the flagpole is - as Mel Allen noted early in the TV broadcast - is where the batters' eye ought to be. But the day was so nice and the crowd so crushing that the Yankees had the option to remove it, and sell more bleacher tickets! Larsen's new "no wind-up delivery" (which we would look at today and say "we just call that a delivery") was odd enough to the batters of 1956. But when Dodger batters tried to pick up the pitch as it left his hand, as background they had only the shifting pattern of fans often wearing white shirts in the distant bleachers. Think about that for awhile, and you realize that the real shock of October 8, 1956 was not that Larsen pitched a Perfect Game, but that Brooklyn's Sal Maglie didn't throw one as well. I'm leaning toward Roger Craig. Drysdale was listed at 6'5", Craig 6'4" and Labine 6'0". The players are relatively close together and appear to be of roughly equal height, so I'd guess it was Craig talking with Drysdale.

Re: Dennis Bennett, Mets
Might we call upon one (or two) of our talented colorists to bring some to the Dennis Bennett Mets photo above. Sounds like it'll be the only way we ever get one!
Thanks to those whose good work is truly art. |

Larsen perfect game
That fellow talking to Drysdale could also be Don "The Weasel" Bessent, #46.

Blow up the picture enough (where's Antonioni when we need him?) and you can see that the second numeral on the pitcher in question's back isn't a straight line down, as Labine's "41" would require. It curves towards Drysdale at both the top and the bottom.
And there's no bar in the middle, as there would be for Bessent's #46. So that's a "40", and thus Craig. Two HoFers and a pennant-winning manager; not a bad haul for what was originally a shot of a bunch of scrubs. Nice pics. |

One of the eBay sellers I follow is postcardsandsnaps. Most of his inventory isn't baseball but, a couple of times a year, he posts a couple dozen, many of which aren't often seen. He has posted 30 baseball images recently. A lot of this batch I have seen before (either from this seller or another), but not all. Dom Zanni? Seen it. Jack Hamilton? Seen it. Harry Anderson? Haven't seen it that I can remember. Your mileage may vary. I'm posting the information as given in the listings. I know Bob Shaw wasn't a Met in 1962, but that's how its listed. The only one I'm filling in the blanks for is Keith Weber, a brief Mets prospect who left the team to finish his education. Another eBay seller (rmphotos) had the (larger and sharper) negative of this very Keith Weber image for sale in 2014.
I'm choosing to post the two unidentified Dodgers in this post though they may well have been posted and identified elsewhere on this site (my memory just isn't that good). They do look familiar. The B&W Dodger is tagged "Breeden", for whatever that's worth. If I had my '64 Street & Smiths handy, I could probably identify the unidentified Athletics, but I don't. Based upon the writing on the glove, I'm guessing the color Dodger is Chuck Bohling. The scans are good and large, by the way (always a plus). 1) Unidentified Dodger (1965) B&W 2) HARRY ANDERSON Reds (1961) 3) BOBBY VALENTINE Mets (1977) 4) BROCK DAVIS Cubs (1970) 5) WILLIE KIRKLAND Senators (1965) 6) DOM ZANNI Reds (1963) 7) PETE RICHERT Dodgers (1963) B&W 8) JACK HAMILTON Mets (1967) 9) JIMMY STEWART Cubs (1965) 10) PHIL REGAN Cubs (1968) 11) BOB SHAW Mets (1962) B&W 12) ART SHAMSKY Reds (1965) 13) Unidentified Met KEITH WEBER (1964 or 65) 14) 1964 KC Athletics (unidentified) 15) RON BRAND Pirates (1963) 16) CHRIS KRUG Cubs (1965) 17) RAY SADECKI Mets (1970) 18) DON MONEY Phillies (1969) 19) DICK HOWSER Yankees (1968) B&W 20) MOE DRABOWSKY & unidentified A’s (1964) 21) GEORGE WILLIAMS A’s (1964) 22) unidentified, LUKE APPLING, & TONY LARUSSA A’s (1964) 23) AL FERRARA Dodgers (1965) 24) JIM LEFEBVRE Dodgers (1965) 25) ROY GLEASON Dodgers (1963) 26) Unidentified Dodger (60s) 27) MOE DRABOWSKY Orioles (1968) B&W 28) JIM BOUTON Yankees (1962) B&W 29) ORLANDO CEPEDA Giants (1962) B&W 30) JERRY WALKER A’s (1961) B&W Last edited by FatJack; 10-07-2016 at 05:03 PM. |
