Johnny "Rube" Ward 1902
In his only major league season, Ward appeared in thirteen games for Brooklyn when he was 23 years old. His time in the field was split among the three outfield positions and he batted a respectable .290. Ward only played in the minor leagues through 1906.

Tom Fleming 1899
His professional baseball career extended from 1894 through 1910, but Fleming appeared in just three major league seasons. He debuted on September 19th, 1899, with the New York Giants, and played 22 games that season in center field. He did not reappear in the majors until 1902, when he played five games in right field for the Philadelphia Phillies. Fleming is pictured here in 1904, just prior to the season when he appeared in three more games for the Phillies. His last major league game was on May 4th of that year.

Lafe Winham 1902
Lafayette Winham made the roster of the Brooklyn Superbas as a pitcher at the start of the 1902 season (as he is pictured here), but after one relief outing on April 21st, in which he allowed four hits and walked two in three innings, he was released on May 3rd and then pitched in the minor leagues with the Montreal Royals. In the following season, he pitched in a few games for the pennant-winning Pittsburg Pirates, including four starts in which he was 3-1 and had one shutout. His professional career seems to have ended after that season, but he continued to pitch semi-professionally.

Seriously, this is from the personal collection of a former Yankee employee I got quite a few years ago. He took it 47 years ago today, June 8, 1969, at the Mantle Day uniform retirement ceremonies at Yankee Stadium.

The others seen are Mel Allen, then Mets coach Yogi Berra, and, in uniform, Jake Gibbs 1961. Not sure who the fellow with his hand on the dugout is. This is moments before Mantle was introduced to the crowd of 60,096.
