We are in Dallas to play the Eagles a 4 game series. They just split a pair of games here with San Antonio. We were 2-6 against them during the regular season last year when they were 99-63 and won the PCL East, but beat them in 6 games in the PCL Championship Series. We are 6-18 (.250) since 2001, the worst record we have against any other team. They are currently 9th in scoring in the PCL with 4.14 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.64, but have only scored 4 total runs in our last 4 games). The Eagles lead the PCL in fewest runs allowed with 3.38 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.52). We have allowed 8 more runs than they have. Their run differential is +44 and ours is +65, still 3 ahead of Fernando Mexicano and his Cleveland Indians for the Best in Baseball. The Eagles have 3 starting pitchers on the DL right now, so maybe we can score some runs.

Portland Beavers (38-20 .655 5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Dallas Eagles (31-27 .534 1.5 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: John Krawczyk (25-L 2-0 3.65) Rookie vs. DAL: Ron Gallant (28-L 1-1 5.79)

Krawczyk gave up 6 runs in 3.1 IP last time out, but our offense got him off the hook by scoring 9 runs.

This will be Gallant's 4th start of the season. Last time out, he only went 1.1 scoreless innings and had to leave with an injury. We faced him once, way back in 2001 when he was a rookie and he shut us out on 6 hits.

CF Jayson Pemberton (20-R) hurt his back last night after we got home in the wee hours of the morning. Trudy the Trainer says he'll be out 2 weeks, so we put him on the DL and called up RF Greg Unser (28-R), who was batting .276 with a .701 OPS for Vancouver (A). We got him in a trade with Milwaukee in November for a player they ended up cutting.

We are back home for a short 2 game home stand against the Sacramento Solons. They won 2 of 3 at home versus Hollywood over the weekend. We are 3-2 against them on the season and won 2 of 3 the last time they were here, April 16-18. They are currently 11th in the PCL in scoring with 3.74 runs per game (Portland is #3 with 4.61, but are only averaging 3.23 in June). The Solons are 12th in fewest runs allowed with 4.48 per game (Portland is #2 with 3.50). Their run differential is -46 and ours is +69, still the best in Baseball.

Sacramento Solons (26-36 .419 15 GB in 7th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (41-21 .661 4.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West)

SAC: Mel Aguero (31-R 0-1 11.57) vs. POR: Barry Phillips (21-R 8-2 2.04) Gold Glove

This will be Aguero's 2nd start of the season. He gave up 6 runs in 4.2 IP in his first. He was released by Baltimore just before the season began and signed by the Solons just 5 days ago, the day he made his debut for them. We have never faced him.

Phillips has lost his last 2 starts, though he only gave up 2 runs in 6 IP last time out. We scored 2 totals runs in the losses.

Today is the Trading Deadline and I would really like to add another left-handed reliever, but there are none to be had without giving up a player I don't want to part with. So we will play the rest of the way with only 1 left-hander.... At least until he gets hurt and then we have none.... Vancouver (A) has 16 pitchers on their roster right now and exactly one of them is left-handed. He is Larry Warner (28-L) and he faced 1 batter in 2002 for the Beavers and gave up a home run....

We are right back on the road and in San Francisco to play the Seals a 4 game series. They just split a pair of games here with Oakland. We won 2 of 3 the first time we were here, May 21-23. Portland Beavers (43-22 .662 3.5 GA in 1st place in the PCL West) at
San Francisco Seals (21-43 .328 21.5 GB in 8th (last) place in the PCL West)

POR: Bobby Johnson (25-R 7-4 3.40) vs. SF: Steve Muir (29-R 4-5 4.85) Gold Glove(01) ex-Beaver

Johnson gave up 3 runs in 7 IP last time out and had a no decision.

Muir gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 3.2 IP in his last start and took a loss. The biggest reason we traded him was that his walks per 9 innings had gone up from 2.1 in 2003 to 5.1 this year for us. Since being traded to the Seals, he is walking 1.4 per 9... This is the first time we have faced him. He is pitching with a mild abdominal strain.

P John Miner is at 92 pitches. PH Oscar Trejo (31-R) lines a double down the left field line! Pinch-runner: Jack Hinckley (28-R). A.J. Lee beats out an infield hit! 2 hits in the first 8 innings and 2 hits for our first 2 batters in the 9th! With the infield in, Jerry Suazo grounds out to 2nd and Lee moves up and Hinckley stays put at 3rd. That does it for P John Miner. New Pitcher: Doug Kimball (26-R), their closer with the 4.80 ERA. We have scored a run off him both times he has pitched in this series. He blew the Save yesterday, but ended up with a win. Enrique Ramos grounds a hit to center and both runners score!! 2 to 1, Beavers! A passed ball sends Ramos to 2nd. Which takes the bat out of Glenn Snowden's hands as they walk him intentionally. Tim Higbee strikes out... Jeff Galka walks to load the bases up with 2 outs. Kim Springer strikes out looking....

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Ramon Andrade (29-R), to give it another shot... He took the loss yesterday. 3-4-5 hitters up for them... Clay Laurence flies out to deep right. Dave McDowell flies out to right! PH Steve Gargan (32-L), batting .200 with 1 HR in 55 AB, tries to check his swing at a 3-2 pitch, but gets rung up by the umpire and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 2 to 1

The Seals have allowed more runs in the PCL than anyone else.
We scored a whopping 10 runs in the 4 games of this series....
Pitiful...
And I am at a loss as to what to do about it...

We had 5 whole hits (3 in the 9th) and made 2 errors
San Francisco had 4 hits and made no errors

Ron Marling (W 2-0) went 8 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 3.
RHP Ramon Andrade (SV 11) pitched a perfect 9th with 1 strikeout.

John Miner (L 3-4) went 8.1 innings, gave us 2 runs, 4 hits, no walks and struck out 5.

RF Enrique Ramos had a hit and both of our RBI. 1B Glenn Snowden had a hit and a walk (INT). PH Oscar Trejo hit a double. PR Jack Hinckley scored a run.

We are in San Diego to play the hottest team in Baseball, the Padres, a 2 game set. They swept Sacramento in 4 games here over the weekend and have won 12 games in a row, a streak we started by losing 2 games here, June 8-9. We are 2-2 against them on the season. They are currently 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.57 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.50 and falling fast...). The Padres are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.42 per game (Portland is now #1 with 3.40). Their run differential is +79 and ours is +75. They have passed us for the Best in Baseball!

Wolfe got off to a rough start this season, but won his last game with 1 run allowed in 7 IP. In his last 3 starts, he has an ERA of 2.14 and has not lost. We scored 5 runs in 4.2 IP when we faced him in April, but he had a no decision and we had to go to 15 innings to win the game.

Won - 2 to 1

The Padres' 13 game winning streak is over!
But these 2 to 1 games are not much fun....
More fun than losing 2 to 1, I guess.
6th straight game with 3 or fewer runs.
In 20 games in June, we are averaging 3.10 runs per game...
All but 2 of those games have been on the road,
but the long and winding road has ended!

Home, sweet home! We are back in Portland to play the Denver Bears a 4 game series through the weekend. They just split a pair of games in Kansas City and are 7-2 in their last 9. This is our first meeting of the season. We were 4-4 against them last year when the were 87-75 and 4th in the PCL East. We are 13-11 (.542) since 2001. They currently lead the PCL in scoring with 5.50 runs per game (Portland is tied for 5th with 4.43). They have hit a whopping 87 HR, 20 more than anyone else and have a team OPS of .800, over 50 points higher than the 2nd best Twins. We are 3rd with 62 HR and 6th with a .722 OPS. The Bears are 15th in fewest runs allowed with 4.79 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.37). Their run differential is +48 and ours is +74, still 2nd best to the Padres.

Tim Higbee leads off with our third hit of the day, a home run to right! 2 to 1, Bears. He now leads the team in HR with 15. He has hit 5 since Glenn Snowden hit his last one... That is only the second home run P Mike Sims has allowed this season. Snowden grounds a hit to center. Jeff Galka triples to right and Snowden scores! Tie Game: 2 to 2! I think from here on out, we will not bat at all until the 7th inning; we'll just take a 0 every inning and let the other team keep batting. It will be less frustrating.... Kim Springer flies out to deep left and Galka tags up and scores! 3 to 2, Beavers!

Top of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Ramon Andrade (29-R), after a perfect 8th, retiring their 3-4-5 hitters. But, of course, we cannot have a perfect 9th; that is right out of the question! Johnnie Graham takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Colin Woodford bunts him to 2nd. PH Harry Garcia (35-L), batting .283 with 5 HR in 53 AB, strikes out! PH Victor Maldonado (29-L), batting .292 in 24 AB, could be walked as far as I am concerned, but he is not and he hits a home run to left... 4 to 3, Bears. What is the point in searching the world for relievers who have not given up home runs? They will give up home runs for us regardless.... That is the fourth home run Andrade has allowed this season and third this month and he gave up 3 in the past 3 years combined.... Bob Ellis grounds a hit to center.... Call to the Bullpen: Larry McLellan (28-R). Jim Jaeger strikes out.

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Javier Juarez (29-L), their closer now, with a 5.61 ERA. Tom Santacroce, who was their closer, is out for the season with an injury. The Bears traded for Juarez from Baltimore on June 10. He has a career 3.31 ERA in 241.2 IP. Glenn Snowden loops a hit to left center. PH Dave Risinger (28-R) grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. Jeff Galka draws a walk. PH Greg Unser (28-R) strikes out looking on 3 pitches... 2 down. PH Juan Rojas (25-S) walks on 4 pitches to load the bases up. Jack Hinckley strikes out on 3 pitches....

Lost - 4 to 3

7th straight game with 3 or fewer runs...

We had 7 hits and made no errors
Denver had 7 hits and made no errors

Bobby Johnson went 5.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP.
LHP Steve Stewart faced 1 batter and struck him out.
RHP Leonardo Sanchez faced 4 batters and got 4 outs with 2 strikeouts.
RHP Ramon Andrade (L 4-4 BS 2) went 1.2 innings, allowed 2 run, 2 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 2.
RHP Larry McLellan faced 1 batter and struck him out on 3 pitches.

Mike Sims (W 3-3) went 8 innings, gave us 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he had a hit.
LHP Javier Juarez (SV 2) pitched a scoreless 9th, gave us 1 hit and 2 walks and struck out 2.

C Tim Higbee had 2 hits with his 15th home run of the season. 1B Glenn Snowden had 2 hits and scored a run. It is his 17th straight game without an RBI. 3B Jeff Galka hit a triple, drew a walk, scored a run and had an RBI.

Editor's Note: I am only going to play 1 game a day until we score more than 3 runs in 9 innings.... This is just not fun...
