Yeah, for three seasons now I've tried to get Roger to shave that thing off or grow it out. But you think he's scary ? You ought to see the women he's been dating recently ...... I've had to ban some of them from the clubhouse.

HBL 2019: The Season of the Triple Crown?

It's August 1, five days away from the 42nd HBL All-Star game and knee deep into the HBL season. Kenosha has just passed Rochester for the top spot in the North and Springfield and Lafayette are dead even for the South wildcard spot behind a surprising Canton squad but not a single person is talking about the races. Everyone is talking about the triple crown. It has been well documented that there have been nine triple crowns in 41 HBL seasons but this year is special. With just about 35 games left on the schedule all four Triple Crowns are up for grabs. Some are more likely to come to fruition than others but it sure makes the end of the 2019 season more interesting.

South Pitching Triple Crown: 1% chance

SP Mike Landers (LAF) - 14 WINS(1st), 2.30 ERA(1st), 111 K(9th)

Landers holds a one win lead over SIX other South pitchers but more daunting is his 36 K deficit where he would have to pass eight foes in order to claim the top spot. Landers is having a fine season but he will not win the South Pitching Triple Crown.

North Pitching Triple Crown: 60% chance

SP Dillon Anderson (KEN) - 14-7(2nd), 2.60 ERA(1st), 158 K(1st)

Dillon Anderson has been here before winning the Crown in 2016. He is two wins behind Davenport's Nick Robinson for the North lead and he holds a 14 K lead over Cecil Wright. His ERA is .21 better than Brandon Chandler and he has a very good offense behind him. Dillon has a shot at his third North Pitcher of the Year Award and his second North Pitching Triple Crown.

North Hitting Triple Crown: 80% chance

CF Bill Burks (CR) - .407(1st), 45 HR(1st), 100 RBI(1st)

Duluth OF Jesse Richmond is having a great 2019 season and he may be the only thing standing in the way of Rookie sensation Bill Burks and the second ever HBL Hitting Triple Crown. Burks has a 21 point lead over fellow rookie Lyle Solon of Bay City and a nine homer lead over Richmond but the eight year veteran is just four RBI behind the new guy. And don't count out the "Legend" David Howard who now sits at .383 and third in batting average.

South Hitting Triple Crown: 95% chance

LF Dax Palmer (PB) - .344(1st), 34 HR(1st), 87 RBI(1st)

Burks is having a huge season but sometimes its who you are not competing against as much as who you are. Fellow rookie Dax Palmer has a less impressive stat line but a better chance of winning the Triple Crown due to his competition. Palmer's top competition for the batting crown, Canton's Matt Gamble, is out for the season so barring a complete collapse the rookie will win the batting title. He has a nine homer lead and an 11 RBI lead over Chris Moore, also of Canton. On top of that Palmer seems to be getting stronger with the just finished month of July being his best of the season so far.

If I was a betting man I'd put my money on Palmer but one thing is for sure, the finish to the 2019 HBL season will be a lot of fun to watch!

As the 2019 season winds down the North is a two team race with Rochester taking control after a 9-1 stretch that has put Kenosha 4.5 games back. The two rivals will face off for a four game series as the calendar flips to September but the race could be over by then. In the South Canton has all but wrapped up the league title as Springfield and Lafayette fight it out for the wildcard.

Triple Crown Update

Bill Burks may end up with the better all around season but it is Poplar Bluff's Dax Palmer that has all but wrapped up the HBL's second ever hitting triple crown. Burks still leads all three categories but his batting average is down to .389 after spending all summer flirting with .400 and he is just one RBI ahead of Jesse Richmond of Duluth. Palmer could probably sit out the final 20 games of the season and still finish with the triple crown.

Dillon Anderson still has a shot at posting his second Pitching Triple Crown but he's not assured of anything at this point. He's still one win behind Davenport's Nick Robinson and he holds a slim margin in ERA. Mike Landers on the other hand has zero chance of taking home the triple crown due to his anemic strikeout totals. He currently holds sizeable leads in ERA and Wins but his 127 strike outs don't even get him into the South's top 10.

In the North Rochester's magic number is down to two with nine to play as they prepare to finish a four game set with Kenosha to start September. The Jackfish have wrapped up a playoff spot but with them finishing the season with a 10 game road trip their chances of catching the Reapers are very slim.

Bill Burks survived a poor week that saw him drop to second in the batting race behind fellow rookie Lyle Solon of Bay City. Burks managed to bounce back and retake the batting average lead but Jesse Richmond of Duluth continues to push him for the RBI lead that has them tied going into the final few games.

In the South Canton has a seven game lead over Springfield with just nine to play. The Kernels are finishing the season on the road but unfortunately so is Springfield. The Storm have a two game cushion over the Stars but the season series is over between the two rivals.

Dax Palmer all but has the South Triple Crown wrapped up in what would be just the second in HBL history.

HBL 2021 Season

The Heartland Baseball League has entered it's 44th season. One month into the new campaign and there is plenty of interesting stuff to look at.

Springfield ended the month of April on a 13 game winning streak helping them to open up a five game lead over second place Lafayette. If the South doesn't slow down the Storm soon then this season will turn into a Wildcard race real quick.

In the North Kenosha slipped past Bay City late in the month to take a slim lead over the Lake Monsters. Look out, here come the Reapers riding a nine game winning streak of their own.

Veteran OF Jesse Richmond pounded Bay City for six hits. The Oshkosh star finished the day 6-6 with a double, a homer, 5 RBI, and 3 runs scored. The last HBL player with six hits in a game was Poplar Bluff OF Dax Palmer on June 6, 2020. It was the 26th six hit game in HBL history.

John Henderson has long been known for his glove but he's not just a one trick pony. Henderson became the 48th player in HBL history to register 2,000 career hits today. Henderson entered the home game against the Duluth Danger with 1999 hits but a hard hit single between first and second off of Don Calhoun ended the suspense early. Henderson would go on to total four hits on the day and finish with 2003 for his career.

When Doug Roberson signed a minor league contract with the Bay City Lake Monsters during the off season he wasn't sure he would even make the team. He had no major league offers so he took what he could get which was a chance to complete for a roster spot. After a so-so spring Roberson was sent to AAA but was called up after two not so great outings. He was put in the four spot in the rotation and in his second game with his new team he threw the 23rd no hitter in HBL history blanking the defending champion Rochester Reapers allowing no hits and just two walks to move to 2-0 on the young season.

May 2021

The Heartland Baseball League has entered it's 44th season. Two months into the 2021 season and Springfield looks unstoppable while the North is up for grabs.

Springfield ended the month of April on a 13 game winning streak and entered May by winning the first nine for what is believed to be a new HBL record 22 game win streak. After the loss the Storm would then win ten more in a row for a stretch of 32 wins in 33 games. So after two months the only fight in the South is for the wildcard barring an epic collapse in Springfield.

In the North it's a four team race with Bay City and Rochester ending May in a virtual tie while Kenosha and Oshkosh are still in the picture. The Reapers and Outlaws seem to be in the mix every season while Bay City and Kenosha are the surprises of the group.

Veteran OF Frank Williams slugged his 300th career homer on May 4 at Poplar Bluff. The 33 year old lead off the game with his eighth homer of the season off of Kevin LeBlanc giving the Stars a 1-0 lead. The Predators would come back to win the game in walk off fashion in the bottom of the 11th.

21 year old Bill Joyce unexpectedly got the call to the big leagues on May first after dominating AAA hitters over the first month of the season. Joyce didn't get the ball until May 6 but he made the most of his opportunity. The Storm rookie pitched a five hit shut out striking out six while walking none AND helping himself at the plate with a hit, 2 RBI, and a run scored. Springfield jumped on top of the Twisters with a second inning lead off homer by Jim Lee. The lead was expanded later in the inning when Frank York and Michael Thompson went back to back to push the lead to 3-0. When asked after the game which milestone was more important(win/hit) he yelled "BOTH!! I can't believe I got both in the first game!" If you think it's all down hill from here you are wrong. Joyce has won all four of his decisions to start his career and was named Rookie of the Month for May. Joyce was a second round pick(25th overall) of Canton in the 2017 draft. He was traded to Springfield along with four others in 2018 for SP Keith DeWitt.

On May 28 seven time Best Hitter at Catcher Ryan Sirrell slapped his 2,000 career HBL hit. Sirrell becomes the 49th player following John Henderson who hit the milestone just last month but he is just the fifth catcher to reach the number. Sirrell took a 2-2 pitch from Lafayette's starter John McAlister and hit it off the left/center field wall for the historic hit. The Predators ran away with the game by a score of 10-4 and Sirrell would add another hit later in the game.

The Heartland Baseball League has entered it's 44th season. Two months into the 2021 season and Springfield looks unstoppable while the North is up for grabs.

The Springfield Storm winning percentage is down to .744 after June but their lead over second place Lafayette is up to 15.5 games. The Stars' wildcard lead is a thin half game over a surging Canton team while Poplar Bluff is trying to hang in the race holding at .500. Springfield Rookie starter Bill Joyce has started his big league career with nine consecutive wins and leads the South in ERA.

In the North the top four teams are separated by just 10 games with Rochester attempting to stretch out a lead that ended June at 4.5 games over second place Kenosha. Bay City is just three games out of the wildcard while Oshkosh sits at five games back. South Bend sits in dead last in the North but Dave Donnelly just wants to keep raking. Donnelly leads all three North triple crown categories and he's just five RBI behind Jim Lee for the HBL triple crown lead.

After waiting almost three years for a no hitter the HBL now has two in just over two months time. Poplar Bluff Predators ace Kevin LeBlanc no hit the Bay City Lake Monsters on June 22. LeBlanc allowed two walks while striking out 10 in the 7-0 PB victory. It's the first no hitter in Predators history and the 24th overall in HBL history.

Daniel Simon entered the game with Duluth on June 29 with 12 homers on the season. He finished the game with 15 after slugging three solo homers in the Columbia win. Simon's outburst came just 12 days after Dayton's Ray Lovell hit three homers against Davenport. Simon was upstaged a bit by the Monarchs' starting pitcher Daniel Davis. Davis not only pitched a five hit, complete game, shutout but he also hit a two run homer of his own in the second inning.

BATTERS OF THE MONTH

Dave Donnelly(SB) .423/.475/.856 14 HR, 34 RBI, 23 RS, 21 game hit streak

Dax Palmer(PB) .415/.479/.717 16 XBH, 27 RBI, 21 RS

PITCHERS OF THE MONTH
Dillon Anderson(KEN) 4-1, 1.37, 42K, 52.2 IP, 6 GS

Bill Joyce(SPR) 5-0, 2.23, 28K, 48.1 IP, 6 GS

ROOKIES OF THE MONTH
Edmund Mitchell(CR) .387/.468/.811 21 XBH, 26 RBI, 34 RS

SP Bill Joyce(SPR) 5-0, 2.23, 28K, 48.1 IP, 6 GS

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

How long is too long? That's the question every athlete must answer at some point in their career. Five future Heartland Baseball League Hall of Famers are pondering that question right now as their careers come to a close. None have formally announced their retirements but with varying degrees of success it's also hard to imagine any returning for another grueling season.

Artie Wall(43), Toby Stell(42), Steven Harris(41), David Howard(41), and Lee Welch(40) combine for over 12,500 games played, 70 All Star appearances, 15 Hitter of the Year Awards, and seven HBL Championships and each one is winding down his career with eye popping stats and accomplishments. Their names pepper the career leaderboards and single season record books and all will be remembered long after they hang their spikes up.

Davis Howard is the most decorated player, not just of this group, but possibly of any HBL player ever. He has seven Hitter of the Year Awards, 18 All Star games, and seven Best Fielder Awards but by remaining in Davenport his entire career he has failed to win an HBL Championship. Howard and his nine HBL North Batting titles is a sure fire, first ballot Hall of Famer. Despite his age Howard continues to play the majority of his games at catcher and needs just four games behind the plate to reach 2500. He's also still effective at the plate hitting .330 with 44 bases on balls a little more than halfway through the season.

Lee Welch has a record four HBL Championships and holds the career records for hits and RBI among others. His chase for 4k hits is likely his reason for pushing on into his forties. Welch also is a first ballot Hall of Famer but as the youngest of the five he is struggling the most this season hitting 100 points below his career batting average. It's hard to imagine Welch returning after such a dismal year.

Artie Wall just turned 43 years old and he has the distinction of being the oldest active player in the HBL. No HBL team would offer him a major league contract before the season so he took a minor league contract with Duluth in order to continue his career. He made the team out of spring training but has put up his third sub par season in a row. After 1700 runs, 3000 hits, and 1500 RBI it seems it is time for Wall to give it up.

Long known as David Howard's sidekick in Davenport Toby Stell has carved out a great career for himself. He is not as decorated as the first three players on this list but you have to remember they all competed for the same awards year after year. Stell has accumulated over 3000 hits, 1750 runs, 700 doubles, and 650 stolen bases but, like his long time Bullfrog teammate, he has never won a championship. After two years out of the HBL Stell also signed a minor league deal with Duluth. So far he's been a bargain hitting over .300 as a part time OF and PH.

Steven Harris has had a different kind of career than the other four guys here. Harris has been injury prone for his entire career and has missed major chunks of time over his career. He has appeared in over 130 games just six times since he entered the HBL in 2001. Harris also signed with Duluth in the offseason and has played well but he once again finds himself watching from the clubhouse due to another lengthy injury. Harris has over 1850 fewer at bats than the average of the other four guys. Although his career numbers are nothing to sneeze at it is interesting to think what he could have done with those other 1850 at bats. His numbers would definitely be more in tune with those of his counterparts. His 2700 hits would be more like 3400. With his injury history I'm surprised Harris didn't hang'em up a long time ago.

The purpose of this article is to let you know that history is happening right in front of you but maybe not for long. Head out to your local Heartland Baseball League ball park and catch one of these living legends while you still can. Who knows, maybe Steven Harris will sign you band aid while you're there.

July 2021

The Heartland Baseball League has entered it's 44th season. Two months into the 2021 season and Springfield looks unstoppable while the North is up for grabs.

The Springfield Storm still controls the South but it gets real interesting when you look at the wildcard race where three teams finish July within 1.5 games of each other. Lafayette and Poplar Bluff are tied but Canton is still right there.

Both post season spots are still up for grabs in the North where five teams are within 10.5 games of each other. Rochester holds a 4.5 game lead on top of the league but the playoffs will be determined by who gets hot and who gets cold and possibly who stays healthy. It should be an interesting end to the season.

Rochester slugger Roger Picot became the 16th Heartland Baseball League player to reach 400 career home runs. Picot lead off the top of the second inning with a solo homer off of Evansville starter Donnie Anthony for his 28th dinger of the season. Six days later in Lafayette Picot would 53rd player to eclipse 1000 RBI.

2021 HBL All-Star game at Predators Park

15,000+ Heartland Baseball League fans packed Predators Park today to watch the best players in both leagues go head to head in the annual All-Star game.
The visiting North came out swinging against Canton's Jerry Douglas. Douglas got the start and entered the game with a 10-8 record and a sub three ERA.
After John Henderson(DAV) grounded out on the first pitch of the game it took Rochester's Bob Lloyd two pitches to slap a double down the right field line.
Cedar Rapids CF Bill Burks followed with a single putting runners at first and third and the most feared hitter in the HBL coming to the plate, Reapers 1B Roger Picot.
Picot slightly disappointed with a ground out but he did manage to put the North on top 1-0. South Bend slugger Dave Donnelly gave the fans what they
wanted with a 356 foot blast that cleared the left field wall and pushed the North lead to 3-0 before the South ever picked up a bat.

Kenosha's Dillon Anderson got the call for the North and he gave up a leadoff single to rising superstar William Fitzpatrick of Columbia. Fitzpatrick quickly stole
second and moved to third on Quentin Childs(OSH) throwing error. He would then score on an Anderson wild pitch narrowing the gap to 3-1. In the bottom of the second Anderson would then
give up a one out solo homer to Lafayette rookie Jesse Woodruff to put the South within one run.

The score would remain 3-2 until the top of the sixth when Picot would wow the crowd with a 391 foot shot to left-center field to lead off the inning and give the North a 4-2 cushion.
In the bottom of the inning an RBI double by Jim Lee(SPR) and an RBI single by Patrick Crane(DAY) would even the score at four each. Chris Carey(BC) a Matt Patton(SPR) ground out to end the threat and leave two runners on.

In the top of the eighth Cliff Smith(CR) would put the North ahead with a solo homer off of Tim Shelton of Springfield, the North's third homer of the game.

With Ed Carpenter(DUL) entering the game in the bottom of the ninth with a one run lead most figured the game to be over. Carpenter is one of the best
closers in the league and he entered the game with a 2.28 ERA and 18 saves in 22 chances. Carpenter recorded the first out when Crane popped out to centerfield.
Patton then doubled down the left field line putting the tying run at second. Bill Thompson(LAF) slapped a routine grounder to short that Frank Jacobs(BC) fumbled
putting runners at first and third with just one out. Joe Newman(JEC) stepped to the plate and after a long mound visit the North skipper elected to leave
Carpenter in the game. Carpenter got ahead of Newman 0-2 Newman looked at the first pitch and whiffed at the second. Newman took the next pitch and slammed
it off the wall in right center. Patton scored easily to tie the game and as the ball kicked away from the North outfielders the 220 pound Thompson lumbered home
with the game winning run.

The host team closer, Dusty Mills, would get the win while Carpenter would get hit with the loss. Surprisingly Donnelly, not Newman, would be named the game's MVP.

The Heartland Baseball League has entered it's 44th season. Two months into the 2021 season and Springfield looks unstoppable while the North is up for grabs.

It's not a surprise that Springfield becomes the first team to clinch a post season spot.
The Storm peaked on May 29 with a 44-9 record that included a remarkable 22 game win streak to get them to their .830 win percentage. Since then they are
just 10 games over .500 but have won enough to not only clinch the postseason spot but to win the South League with two weeks left in the season. The South
wildcard spot is Lafayette's to lose. The Stars have a five game lead over Poplar Bluff and Canton with nine games left to play.

Both North playoff spots are still up for grabs but Rochester and Kenosha have the leads for now. Rochester is two up on the Jackfish while Bay City and Oshkosh
are still within striking distance. Davenport is nine out with nine to play so they are virtually eliminated. The Reapers and the Fish finish the regular season with a
four game series at Rochester.

When Doug Roberson no hit Rochester on April 19 the HBL had gone almost three full years with out a no-no. Now the HBL has seen three in less than four months.
Reaper's ace Larry Collins returned the favor by pitching a no hitter against those same Lake Monsters on August 11. Bay City was also no hit earlier in the season
by Kevin LeBlanc of Poplar Bluff. Collins is attempting to win the North Pitching triple crown leading all three stat categories as of September 1. He has three
North Pitcher of the Year Awards and should earn his fourth this offseason. For the Reapers it is their second no hitter but the first since Craig Chalis
did it way back in 1984.

BATTERS OF THE MONTH

PITCHERS OF THE MONTH

2021 End of Regular Season

The Heartland Baseball League has just finished it's 44th season.

The 44th Heartland Baseball League regular season is in the books and it was another exciting campaign. After the hot start Springfield coasted to the South League but they
must face their biggest enemy in the Lafayette Stars. Springfield won nine of sixteen meetings with Lafayette but the Stars actually out scored the Storm 63-61 in those games.
Springfield led the South in both runs scored(802) and runs against(526) while Lafayette was third in both.

Rochester didn't claim the North League title until the second to last day of the season. They finished just two games up on the Kenosha Jackfish. The Reapers
also won nine of sixteen from Kenosha but they outscored the Jackfish 67-56 in those games. On the season Kenosha finished first in the North in runs against(530) while
Rochester was second(542). Rochester scored five more runs than Kenosha overall.

2021 North League Championship Series

The Heartland Baseball League is entering it's 44th post-season.

VS

NLCS GAME 1
Game one was a matchup of North Pitcher of the Year hopefuls in Dillon Anderson(KEN) and Larry Collins(ROC). Rochester touched Anderson in the bottom of the
first when two time Heartland Series MVP tripled and was promptly knocked in by 2B Brad Marshall. Kenosha would answer in the top of the second with back to
back solo homers by veteran Edward Peck and Rookie of the Year candidate Jack Butler putting the Fish up by one.

Randy Johnson would lead off the bottom of the second with a single and after stealing second base Collins would help himself with a game tying RBI single. Both Aces would pitch zeros until
the top of the ninth when Rochester's Tony Pierson would give up a one out single to Trey Rice. Barry Woods would come in to pitch to Pete Wright who would then slap a
double past a diving Joey Booth in center field scoring Rice and putting Kenosha into the lead. Woods would then issue an intentional walk to Nick Robinson to set up
a double play with Peck coming to the plate. Peck deposited a 1-1 fastball from Woods 411 feet away into the left centerfield seats to push the lead to 6-2.
Anderson would need just eight pitches to retire the Reapers in the bottom of the ninth and secure the game one victory. Anderson pitched a complete game giving
up just the two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts. Pierson was stuck with the loss while Collins finished with seven innings pitched and a no-decision. Peck was named
Player of the Game after hitting two homers and driving in four runs.

NLCS GAME 2
Riding the 4-hit performance of left fielder Nick Robinson, the Kenosha Jackfish got a road win against the Rochester Reapers, 5-4, in Game 2 of the League Championship Series today. Robinson went 4 for 4 with a double and 3 singles, while scoring 2 runs for the Jackfish, who now lead the best-of-5 series, 2 games to 0.

The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Edward Peck came to bat in the top of the eighth. Facing Rochester pitcher Barry Woods, he hit a 1-2 cutter for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Kenosha on top, 5-4.

Reapers manager Robb Clarke did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the Heartland Series."

Game 3 is set to be played Wednesday, September 15th, 2021. The scheduled starters for the game are Héctor García for the Rochester Reapers and Alan Ball for the the Kenosha Jackfish.

NLCS GAME 3
Clinging to their post season life Rochester took to the road to try to extend their season and avoid a sweep at the hands of the Jackfish. They dodged a huge bullet
in the top of the second when Rookie starter Hector Garcia worked out of a bases loaded jam by striking out Kenosha starter Alan Ball to end the threat.

The Reapers scored first in the top of the third when Garcia singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a Joey Booth triple. Booth would be stranded on third but Rochester
would have the early lead. They extended that lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth when they loaded the bases off of Ball with no outs. Garcia's second single of the game
would score Scott Seals and a Ball wild pitch would plate Randy Johnson to make it 3-0. Ball would strike out the final two hitters of the inning to keep the damage to just two runs.

Kenosha would finally answer in the bottom of the fifth when Matt Lawson lead off with a triple off the left centerfield wall and then would come home on a Ball single
cutting the lead to 3-1. Barry Woods would relieve Garcia to start the bottom of the seventh and after a one out single to Trey Rice catcher Pete Wright would tie the game with
a line drive homer to straight away center. Reapers closer Toney Pierson started the bottom of the eighth and gave up five consecutive hits leading to three runs before finally ending the inning
with a Peter Wright ground out but the damage had been done and the Jackfish entered the top of the ninth with a 6-3 lead.

Three time North Reliever of the Year and the 2021 HBL leader in saves, Alistair Aytoun, toed the mound for the Jackfish and he needed just 10 pitches to retire Rochester and
send Kenosha to their fourth Heartland Series appearance. 3B Edward Peck was named NLCS MVP.

3B Edward Peck(KEN) 4-12, 2 HR, 6 RBI

2021 South League Championship Series

The Heartland Baseball League is entering it's 44th post-season.

VS

SLCS GAME 1
Almost 15,000 Storm fans packed The Shelterhouse to watch the Storm dominate the Stars in game one of the South League Championship Series. Seventeen game
winner Mark Gunther pitched a complete game, three hitter holding Lafayette to just a Thierry Garcia solo homer in the top of the seventh to prevent a shut out.
All eight regulars notched hits but it was the unexpected offensive outburst from 27 year old, glove first rookie Cason Kelley that put the Storm over the edge.
Leading 3-0 Kelley slammed a two out, three run homer to left doubling the home team's lead and putting the game out of reach.

SLCS GAME 2
After both starting pitchers were touched up for four runs a three batter stretch in the top of the seventh against the Storm bullpen was the deciding point of game 2.
Brian Lawrence took an 0-2 pitch from Norman Skinner deep to put the Stars up 5-4. Skinner then gave up a double to Mike Williams who then scored on a single from
Frank Williams for an insurance run. Lafayette reliever Fred Brown would give up just one base runner for a three inning save helping John McAlister preserve the win despite giving
up four runs in six innings. Lawrence, Lewis, and Williams each collected two hits and combined for four runs and three RBI as the Stars evened the series heading back to Lafayette.

SLCS GAME 3
When Jim Lee scored on a bases loaded double play in the top of the first inning no one thought it would be the only run of the game but the fans finally got the pitching
duel they had been waiting for. Mike Landers and Fred Brown combined to shutout the Storm the rest of the way but Ed Hietanen, Bill Wiley, and Tim Shelton combined for
a five hit shutout to move Springfield to within one game of a 2021 Heartland Series matchup with Kenosha.

SLCS GAME 4
Lafayette sent rookie and his 40 innings of HBL experience into an elimination game with Springfield and the Storm took advantage of him scoring five runs
in less than five innings. The Storm shut out the Stars for the second consecutive game and punched their ticket to the Heartland Series. Veteran Rob Gibson pitched
six and one third scoreless innings allowing Kyle Wells and Norman Skinner to finish the game from the bullpen. 2B Ken Simpson slammed his third solo homer of the series
taking home the Series MVP honors.

2B Ken Simpson(SPR) 7-15, 3 HR, 3 RBI

2021 Heartland Series

The Heartland Baseball League is entering it's 44th Heartland Series.

VS

Heartland Series GAME 1
Kenosha catcher Pete Wright set the tone of this game early as he smashed a 448 solo homer off of Springfield ace Mark Gunther with two outs in the top
of the first inning giving the Jackfish the 1-0 lead. Kenosha's own ace, Dillon Anderson, would do the rest. Anderson pitched a complete game, two hit shutout.
Springfield entered the series boasting the best pitching(526 RA) and the best offense(802 RS) in the entire HBL but Kenosha didn't care about the stats. The Jackfish
scored eight total runs on four homers while Anderson faced the minimum allowing two singles, each of which were erased by double plays. On the other side Gunther
allowed six earned runs in just four plus innings.

SP Dillon Anderson

Heartland Series GAME 2
After losing game one and homefield advantage in the series the Storm and all of the HBL viewed game two as a must win for the South League champions.
Kenosha's slick fielding rookie 2B Dale Morgan had his own thoughts as he lined a shot to left field with two on in the top of the second that barely cleared the fence
giving the Jackfish an early 3-0 lead. The lead would grow to 5-0 with solo homers from veterans Pete Wright in the 5th and Edward Peck in the sixth. For the second
game the Storm starter would get battered(this time rookie Bill Joyce) and the Jackfish starter would dominate(Edward Kelly). The 36 year old Kelly would give up an RBI double
to Jim Lee in the bottom of the sixth and another run in the bottom of the eighth as the Storm closed the gap late to 5-2. Three time North Reliever of the Year Alistair Aytoun would enter
the game in the bottom of the ninth to attempt to close out the victory for Kenosha but the Storm had other thoughts. Matt Patton lead off the inning with a double followed by
a Thomas Colbert single that put the tying run at the plate with no outs. A Michael Bruce sac fly would push the game to 5-3 with one out and Colbert still sitting on first.
A Frank York single followed by a Justin Sanders walk loaded the bases with one out and the entire stadium was on their feet smelling a Springfield walk off win.
Storm CF Adam Phillips hit what looked to be a sure double play but the speedster beat the throw as Colbert scored and the teams were now separated by just a single run.
With the stands shaking rookie SS Rod Gibson took his spot in the box and without taking the bat off his shoulders he was at a count of two balls and one strike. He
was fooled on the next pitch and as he attempted to check his swing he made soft contact with the ball which headed slowly towards the second baseman.
Aytoun swept in to pick up the ball and toss it to first base for the final out of the game. Kenosha heads back home for game three of the series with a dominating 2-0 lead.

Edward Kelly

Heartland Series GAME 3
After blowing a chance to even the series in game two the Storm knew that they had to win game three. Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth things looked bleak as
the Jackfish called upon their closer Alistair Aytoun to once again finish out the game. Aytoun was not good in game two barely pitching out of a bases loaded jam.
He would enter the game with one out and a runner on first after 8.1 strong innings from starter Alan Ball. Adam Phillips would greet the Kenosha closer with
a line drive double to left that would have scored almost anyone on the team other than the lumbering Quinn Carter that was in front of him. With runners on second and third Rod Gibson
hit a shallow single to left that Phillips misread. Carter scored the tying run but Phillips only managed to get to third rather than scoring the go ahead run. Aytoun would
get South League batting champ Ken Simpson to strike out swinging and end the threat with a long Jim Lee fly out to center field. The bullpens would battle it out for the next four extra innings
as the game would head to the thirteenth still tied at three runs each. Justin Sanders lead off the thirteenth inning with a single followed by a Frank York strike out.
With one out and the pitcher's spot up in the lineup the Storm had but one man left on the bench. Ken Thomas took his 195 career batting average and his zero regular season homers
to the plate and smashed the first pitch he saw from Scot Turner placing it 423 feet away in the right field seats giving the Storm a most improbable 5-3 lead. Springfield would
end the inning quietly but the damage had been done. Bill Wiley, who had pitched three scoreless innings in relief for the Storm, was relieved by Patrick Jackson. Jackson
managed to get two harmless groundouts sandwiched around a Pete Wright strikeout to end the game after four hours and forty seven minutes.

Ed Hietanen

Heartland Series GAME 4
Still riding high off the late night win in Game 3 the Springfield Storm came out swinging in Game 4 with five of their first six hitters greeted Kenosha starter
Roberto Lopez with base hits including RBI doubles from Ken Simpson and Matt Patton that game the visitors an early 3-0 lead. A Pete Wright RBI triple in the bottom
of the first off of Norman Skinner would put the Jackfish on the board and push the score to 3-1. Lopez would settle down and pitch scoreless baseball for the next
six innings while Skinner would give up just one more run on a Trey Rice solo homer in the bottom of the fourth inning. The score would remain 3-2 until the bottom of the eighth
where the Jackfish would score four runs off of an ineffective Bill Wiley, who had just pitched three innings of relief the night before. The big hit of the inning was rookie Dale Morgan's two RBI double.
With a 6-3 lead Kenosha called upon Alfred Owens to close the game. Owens gave up a leadoff single to Frank York then proceeded to strikeout the side giving the Jackfish
a 3-1 Heartland Series lead.

Trey Rice

Heartland Series GAME 5
You could fill it in the air! Standing room only at The Pond in downtown Kenosha where everyone came to see the Jackfish win their third Heartland Series title.
Their ace and game one hero Dillon Anderson was on the mound again so things were looking good for the Jackfish fans. The fans were on their feet from the start off the game and
you could here the crowd from miles away when Jim Lee struck out on three pitches to start the game. Despite the energy in the park the Storm managed to get to Anderson early
when Matt Patton followed a Ken Simpson triple with an RBI double to put the visitors up 1-0. The lead would be short lived as Kenosha catcher Pete Wright would slugged a two run homer in the bottom of the first, his third homer of the series.
A Jack Butler solo homer in the bottom of the fourth off Springfield starter Mark Gunther pushed the Jackfish lead to 3-1. A Ken Simpson sac fly closed the score to 3-2 in the top of the fifth
but Kenosha would answer in the bottom of the inning when Matt Lawson reached on a single, moved to second on an Anderson sac bunt, stole third and then scored on
a Gunther balk to push the score to 4-2. The Jackfish would score again in the bottom of the sixth in a more traditional way, and Edward Peck solo homer making it a 5-2 lead.
Springfield would again answer the call scoring another run in the top of the seventh as Jim Lee knocked in Thomas Colbert with an RBI single making it a two run game at 5-3.
Rookie John Craig would take over for Gunther to start the bottom of the seventh and he looked sharp getting two outs in just five pitches but the veteran Wright would
not let him off the hook so easily drawing an eight pitch walk after starting the at-bat 0-2. Nick Robinson would follow with a walk of his own and Wright would score on a single from
Peck to again give the home team a three run lead. Jack Butler loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch but Craig settled down and struck out fellow rookie Dale Morgan
to end the threat. Anderson would return to the mound for the eighth and would get out of the inning easily despite allowing a Matt Patton double. In the bottom of the eighth
Craig would allow a leadoff single to Lawson before giving up the ball in favor of Patrick Jackson. Jackson started off well getting two outs on a sac bunt and a strikeout but it
all went south from there. A Trey Rice triple scored Lawson putting the Fish up 7-3. Wright would follow with an RBI single, his third RBI of the game, to push the score to 8-3.
Jackson would get out of the inning but not before the Jackfish had a devastating five run lead. With that lead Anderson's day was done. Kenosha sent rookie Gary Morissy
to the mound for his first post season appearance to close out the Heartland Series. Springfield saw an opening and came out swinging against the rookie.
Back to back doubles by Michael Thompson and Thomas Colbert got one run back and made the score 8-4. An Adam Phillips single put runners on first and third with no outs.
Jim Lee hit a long fly ball to center that had the fans holding their breath until the ball fell safely into the glove of Trey Rice for a sac fly and another Storm run. The score was now 8-5
and the heart of the Springfield order coming up. Steven King would send a sharp ground ball toward the hole at second which Jackfish 1B Butler would scoop up and
throw to a covering Morissy for the second out. Now with a man on second and two outs the rookie would face the South League batting champ in Ken Simpson.
Simpson would take the first two pitches for strikes before laying off of one in the dirt making it a 1-2 count with the Heartland Series on the line. The rookie induced a weak fly ball to short center field and before Rice could even close his glove around the ball they were already celebrating in the infield.

2021 Heartland Series MVP

Pete Wright(KEN) 8-23, .348 BA, 3 HR, 6 RBI
