MY LIFE IN 1950
I was perusing The New Orleans Times-Picayune for Tuesday, June 20, 1950 and here's what I gleaned from the real world: President Harry Truman wants 300 million dollars to develop a hydrogen bomb... the US Governent want to keep the Chinese from taking over Formosa (current day Taipei)… the Korean War is getting hot and heavy. and yes, EC did read the paper at age 10... and yes, maybe I did concentrate most of reading on the sports pages and the comics... and also on the amusement section to see what movies were showing... but on rare occasions, I would check out the latest news. And now let's take a look at Hollywood:
Bob Hope gets that luscious blond, Marilyn Maxwell as his co-star in a new movie, "The Lemon Drop Kid"... and Douglas Fowley, the teeth-clicking G. I. in the Van Johnson war movie "Battleground", is a little old for college, but he will enter UCLA in the fall... Fowley, who wants to be a drama teacher, will take a course in dramatics on the GI Bill. and Robert Montgomery, famed actor and director, remarked about the trials and tribulations of a movie-radio star: "Our private lives are invaded... wherever we go, we are hounded for autographs, benefits, donations and souvenirs... we can't call our lives our own... and what do we get out of it? -- Just a fortune!" You tell 'em, Robert. Montgomery was a special guy... when World War II broke out, he drove ambulances until the Dunkirk evacuation... and when the US entered the war on December 7, 1941, he volunteered for the Navy and was present at the Normandy invasion on D-Day, 1944. |

Enough frivolity and frivolous endeavors... EC needs to get serious and contribute to society.
Here is some serious health news from the Health section of the New Orleans Times-Picayune: On the health page in the New Orleans Times-Picayune, there is an article that television is not good for small tots... it apparently causes babies to cry... according to the story, the baby's eyes become bewildered by objects on the screen, which they are unable to comprehend and blend into a story... that is why babies cry at the movies. Watching the TV may be bad for a baby's eyes, too... a lady said her four-year-old watches a 7-inch TV and she is concerned about it harming his vision... she also said it is not good for older folks, either. The health columnist Myrtle Meyer Eldred said she hadn't had a TV long enough to answer the question... but that a parent should control rigidly the amount of TV an infant should watch. Way to go, Myrt… you are way ahead of your time. Last edited by Eugene Church; 05-18-2019 at 10:59 PM. |
