George Sisler garnered the American League Player of the Week Award for his superb play last week. "Gorgeous George" compiled a .526 batting average (10-for-19) with 4 home runs, 6 runs batted in and scored 6 runs. Sisler got the best of Ted Lyons in their matchup on April 21, dialing long distance three times against the White Sox hurler.

HRTCL Box Scores, St. Louis Browns at Chicago White Sox, 04/21/1960

Phillies' second baseman Nap Lajoie might not have the spring he had in his step years ago, but the "old man" can still play the game. "Larry" has been a reliable ballplayer, one who has worked hard to earn everything he's achieved and today he sits on top of the heap as he was named the National League Player of the Week. He went 10-for-23 to rack up a .435 average with 1 home run, 3 RBI and 5 runs scored this past week.

Selection Question

I'm interested in your methodology for selecting players for rosters. I am amateur baseball historian and especially know alot about all the Cleveland baseball franchisees.

2 specific player questions.

Elmer Flick
Napoleon Lajoie

You have both on the Phillies.

Elmer Flick spent 9 years with Cleveland and 4 years with Pha.
Nap Lajoie spent 13 of his 21 years with Cleveland. (The team was even known as the Cleveland Naps while he played there.)

Week 3 News and Notes from the Hardball Retrospective Turn of the Century (OOTP 17) League (1901-196

When it came to hitting the baseball, Cy Seymour had few peers in the National League this past week.

The talented Giants' center fielder tagged opposing pitchers for a .591 average and was voted the NL Player of the Week. Seymour produced 13 hits in 22 at-bats, 2 homers, 5 runs scored and 6 RBIs. He is hitting .383 with 2 home runs and 8 RBI's as the calendar flips to May.

Rookie jitters had no place in Vean Gregg's game last week as the 26-year-old Cleveland pitcher propelled himself to the American League Player of the Week award. The freshman posted 3 wins, 8 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA last week.

Dolf Luque's been around the league long enough to appreciate the honor he received today. After going 4-0 in April, the 32-year-old Boston Braves hurler has been named National League Pitcher of the Month. He fanned 17 in 34.2 innings, logged an ERA of 1.56 and held opponents to a.185 BA against him.

Mel Parnell hasn't been around the big leagues long enough to know that youngsters shouldn't be winning American League Pitcher of the Month. But when you put up numbers like his, you're going to get some notice. In April the Red Sox starter earned a 3-0 mark in 3 starts. He threw 26 innings, struck out 7 and compiled a solid 0.69 ERA.

Pittsburgh Pirates fans believe they've got a talented young star in Arky Vaughan. He did nothing to dissuade that notion in April, as he hit .377 with 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 18 runs scored to secure National League Batter of the Month honors.

Beach balls were coming in at Tillie Walker in April and he banged, bashed and blasted them all over the park, putting up a .351 batting average and hauling in the American League Batter of the Month trophy. The 26-year-old Washington left fielder collected 13 hits last month in 10 games. He put up 3 home runs, 10 RBIs and 10 runs scored. Walker also drew 4 walks and compiled a .415 on-base percentage.

The premier performer in the National League this week was Chick Stahl of the Boston Braves. The hot-hitting 31-year-old center fielder put up a .480 average and .581 on-base percentage, piling up 12 hits in 25 at-bats, 2 home runs, 5 RBIs and 6 runs scored.
That kind of hitting got him the NL Player of the Week honors.
So far this season Stahl has 4 home runs and a .352 batting average.

The American League has selected Al Rosen of the Cleveland Indians as Player of the Week. He hit .360 (9-for-25) this past week collecting 9 RBIs, scored 5 runs and hit 4 home runs. This year Rosen is hitting .323 with 6 home runs and 13 RBIs in 19 games played. He also boasts an OBP of .458 with 17 walks and 16 runs scored.

Veteran Ed Delahanty had a great week at the plate for the Phillies to capture the majority of votes for Player of the Week in the National League. He has posted 2 home runs, scored 19 runs and driven in 16 runs.

When it came to hitting the baseball, Del Pratt was in a class by himself in the American League this past week. Nobody did it better. The outstanding second baseman for St. Louis tagged opposing pitchers for a .462 average and was voted the Player of the Week Award. Included in his stats were 12 hits in 26 at-bats, 2 homers, 6 runs scored and 7 RBIs. Pratt has 2 home runs, .321 BA, .352 OBP, 9 RBIs and 12 runs scored through mid-May.

Youth was served last week as 23-year-old Doc White put together a remarkable stretch on the mound, outpacing all other National League pitchers and hitters to win Player of the Week honors. The Philadelphia Phillies hurler rang up 10 strikeouts in 9.1 innings, compiling an ERA of 2.89 and posting a fine 3-0 mark. This year White has posted a record of 4 wins and 1 loss with a 2.40 ERA. He has appeared in 20 games and struck out 30 in 30 innings.

Shoeless Joe Jackson has the tools to stick in this league for many years. The 21-year-old right fielder of the Philadelphia Athletics had a pretty hot bat in the American League over the past seven days and won the Player of the Week honors. Jackson batted .440 with 11 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run and 5 RBIs. Through 32 games he has posted a .314 batting average to date with 43 hits in 137 at-bats, 19 RBIs, 4 home runs and scored 25 times.

The Senators have fallen on hard times. Following a 12-8 start, Washington proceeded to lose a dozen consecutive contests.

The National League made it official today: Earl Torgeson is the Player of the Week. "The Earl Of Snohomish" really glistened on the diamond this week with a .455 average to take home the honor. The Indians stormed into the lead in the American League after winning 14 of their last 16 contests. Cleveland's overall record (37-17) tops the ToC with one-third of the season in the books.

At the age of 28, Mickey Vernon might have some potential he hasn't realized yet -- if his success at the plate last week is any indication. The Washington first baseman put up some exceptional numbers the past seven days with a .520 batting average. For his efforts Vernon collected the American League Player of the Week Award. He racked up 13 hits in 25 at-bats, 1 home run and 3 RBIs last week in 7 games. For the season Vernon has hit .327 with 3 home runs and 16 RBIs. He has played in 54 games and scored 30 times.

Cleveland's Minnie Minoso would not be denied the American League Player of the Week Award for this past week. His consistent stroke, which produced 13 hits in 29 at-bats and a .448 average, made him the clear favorite to win the honor. "You just go out there and do what you have to do," said Minoso, "When I'm up, I try to focus and block everything else out of my mind and have a good at-bat. I'm up there to get a hit or advance a runner, not to get caught up in the emotion of the moment. I hope I can win this award every week." He also tallied 3 home runs, 9 RBIs, and scored 5 runs. Batting .286 to date, Minoso has 10 home runs and 47 RBIs.

One of the league's most exciting young players, Dots Miller of the Pittsburgh Pirates earned himself National League Player of the Week honors with a standout performance in last week's games.

@ignats75 - Each player is listed as a member of the "original" team that he signed his first professional contract with. Elmer Flick and Napoleon Lajoie would be a member of the Phillies for the duration of his career in this scenario. This is the same methodology that I utilized for selecting the rosters for my book, "Hardball Retrospective".
