Hank Aaron is playing second base???
I have been playing a historical league that I started in 1946. I let the computer do everything while I check the results. This is how I play DMB and most computer sports games I have. I don't have the time to micro manage these games as I spend too much of my free time playing World of Warcraft.
Anyway I noticed that Hank Aaron has been playin for the Cardinals since 1960 and the computer put him at second base! What the heck? To be fair he was playing right field until the end of the current season but still!! He also only has 365 homeruns for his career which started in 1953!! He started with Milwaukee in 1953 and was traded to St. Louis in 1959. He has been injured a few seasons but still this is too far off reality to please this baseball historian. I hope that the AI in version 9 is better than this. I also looked at how Sandy Koufax did and OMG!! He played about 7 years and had 55 wins before suffering a career ending injury. Again the historical computer AI is found wanting. Yes I know Koufax did retire early in 1966 but he had many effective years. This is why I favor Diamond Mind Baseball over this truly wonderful game. This game is awesome for the fictional universe, but when it comes to histrical replays it ain't even close. I wish we could get DMB like results with the OOTP manager

Perhaps if you played each season as a one-off you would be happier? Isn't that how DMB is played?

Incidentally, in Koufax's first seven years in the majors, he won 54 games.

Oh, geez. With the recalc off, the game engine takes over and players mean nothing to the AI. You need recalc on if you actually want it to follow historical patterns.
Game Setup > League Setup > Options If you want it as close as historically accurate as possible, on this screen you want Auto expand on, Auto adjust league strategy on, import financial settings on, Recalc player ratings turned on and set to every year as well as auto adjust league totals for historical accuracy turned on. |

That still won't fix all of your problems. Wait for OOTP 9, because it will be much better for historical realism. But it still won't be as strictly close to real life as a product like DMB.

If I recall Hank Aaron started out in the Negro LEague as a 2B. Or maybe it was 3B.
Wouldnt really bother me that he only hit 365 HR though. That is still a pretty good career.

The position aspect would be influenced by what ratings your database gave him. OOTP doesn't know he's an outfielder in real, just that he can play outfield and second base in that case. As has been said, OOTP9 is supposedly going to be much better at the replay aspects with more true lineups and pitching staffs.

Aaron played a few games at 2b during his major league career. Less than 50, but he still played the position.

I think that any comparison of DMB and OOTP must include cost if one is to be fair to both games. Frankly I think that DMB is a blatant cash grab.

He ended up with 569 homeruns...not bad but I think that there are way too many injuries than there were in real life back in the 1950's thu the 1980's in OOTP.

Well after the recent changes over at DMB they the customers may well start questioning it. But up until now we all have appreciated the amount of work that went into making the seasons and especially because they were so very accurrate and representative of the players on field performance.

Henry Aaron was a second baseman in the Negro Leagues when he was signed by the Braves.
Here are the number of games at each position that he played in the majors: 2760 games as an outfielder 210 games as a 1st baseman 202 games as a designated hitter 43 games as a 2nd baseman 7 games as a 3rd baseman Last edited by captaincarl; 06-05-2008 at 06:42 PM. |

you got to remember that one of the beautiful aspects of playing historic leagues is that players will play on different teams, injurys can affect their careers in a negative way, players get used differently(ie starting pitcher with 60 innings pitched and a 2.12 era might get 250 innings pitched and dominate), and just the fact that randomness is a big factor in the fun of seeing how players played out their careers.
If all the stats stuck exactly to what they were in real life there would be no reason to sim a historic league. |
