FRIDAY OCTOBER 6
All three of the contenders win. Mission pounds Sacramento 12-1 for the Reds 6th win in a row. Mel Harder improves to 24-9 on the season by tossing a 2-hit shutout to lead San Francisco past Oakland while Los Angeles dumps Hollywood 11-5.

LOS ANGELES 109 75 6.0
SATURDAY OCTOBER 7
The big three each notch another victory. San Francisco drops the Oaks 5-2, Mission once again pounds Sacramento, this one by an 11-3 count as Tony Lazzeri hit his 24th homerun and Stan Hack doubled and drove in 2 runs. Hack is now hitting .406 on the year. Finally, the Angels blanked Hollywood 1-0 as Harry Holsclaw tossed a 7-hit shutout to improve his record to 23-9. Joe DiMaggio went 2-for-4 for the Stars in the game and is now hitting .298 with 6 homers and 39 rbi's.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 8
Doubleheader day once again. It was a big day for Mission bats as the Reds outscored Sacramento 24-3 over the two games, winning 17-3 and 7-0 to stretch their winning streak to 9 games and their lead on San Francisco to 6.

The Seals and Los Angeles Angels each split their doubleheader so LA remains a game behind San Francisco for the second playoff berth. After falling 3-1 in the opener at Oakland, Babe Dahlgren led San Francisco to victory in the second contest. Dahlgren (.284,2,42) had two hits including a homer, and drove in 4 runs. Down the coast in Los Angeles, the Angels won the opener of their pair with Hollywood 4-3. A Sam Bohne rbi single in the bottom of the ninth proved the difference. The nightcap was also tight but the visiting Stars prevailed 5-4.

All the attention next week will be focused on San Francisco where the Seals entertain Los Angeles for 7 games, which will go a long way towards determining who makes the playoffs.

OCTOBER 10-15
The Los Angeles Angels drew first blood in their crucial 7 game series with San Francisco, taking Tuesday's contest by a 5-2 score. The Angels would not win again until the second game of Sunday's doubleheader as San Francisco reeled off 5 straight victories and went the dust settled the Seals had a 4 game lead on Los Angeles for second place and the final playoff series.

Would it be enough as San Francisco would finish the season with 7 games against the first place Mission Reds while Los Angeles gets the woeful Sacramento Senators to end the year. The Senators were just 59-134 on the season and 64 and a half games back of first place Mission.

As for Mission, the Reds were on a tear as they started October with a 15-1 record and were 7 games ahead of the Seals. Stan Hack, their 24 year old first baseman, looked like he had .400 licked for the year, as he was batting .408 with 8 homers and 144 rbi's in search of his second straight batting title. In all, six Reds had driven in over 100 runs this season and the Reds 1141 runs scored on the year were 168 more than the next closest team.

TUESDAY OCTOBER 17
The Seals take the opener from Mission in dramatic fashion as San Francisco scores 3 times in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and walked it off with a 10th inning rbi single from 3B Willie Kamm to win 8-7. The Mission loss denied the Reds a chance to clinch first place on this day. Los Angeles kept pace but remains 4 behind San Francisco for the final playoff spot after the Angels thumped visiting Sacramento 15-3.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 18
Mission clinches their 3rd straight pennant and extend their playoff streak to 6 consecutive years with a 6-4 win over San Francisco. Good news for the Reds is pitcher Ossie Orwoll (6-4) goes the distance for the win. The 33 year old was 25-13 a year ago and has 5 twenty win seasons for Mission but has missed most of the season with a variety of injuries.

Los Angeles failed to take advantage of the Seals loss, falling 7-3 to Sacramento to remain 4 games out of a playoff spot with time running out.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 19
The 1930 San Francisco Seals won a record 130 games. The 1933 Mission Reds are 4 games shy of that total with 4 to play after beating San Francisco 4-1 as Red Kress homered for the second straight game. There was cause for celebration in the Seals dressing room as they learned Los Angeles fell to lowly Sacramento for the second day in a row lowering the Seals magic number for clinching a playoff spot to 1. Senators starter Gene Valla (10-19) threw a complete game two-hitter as Sacramento beat the Angels 7-1.

FRIDAY OCTOBER 20
Los Angeles kept it's faint playoff hopes alive with a 7-4 win over Sacramento while San Francisco lost 5-3 to Mission. Lyn Lary led the Angels by hitting a pair of doubles and driving in two runs. Los Angeles needs to win it's final 3 games of the season and have San Francisco drop it's remaining 3.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 21
Lefty Gomez allowed just 4 hits over 10 innings but his San Francisco Seals still lost to Mission, falling 2-1 thanks to a walk-off rbi single from Chick Hafey. Despite the loss the Seals still clinched second place as Sacramento scored twice in the top of the ninth to rally past Los Angeles 5-4. A disappointing end for the Angels, dropping 3 games in 4 days to a team that at 62-137, is the worst in PCL history.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 22

A meaningless day in the schedule as all positions had been decided. The Reds and Seals split a doubleheader in preparation for their best of 7 championship series that will begin Wednesday at Mission.

Mission first baseman Stan Hack endured a bit of a slump to end the season but is .402 season is the highest ever recorded by a PCL player not named Harry Heilmann.

PCL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES

The San Francisco Seals return to the series after a 2 year absence. San Francisco beat Mission in the 1930 series after losing to the Reds the previous year. The Seals finished first in the regular season both those years as well as from 1921-23 when they won 2 more PCL Series titles.

Mission is back for the sixth year in a row, winning in 1928, 1929 and 1931. The Seals and Reds have played each other twice in the PCL Series and each won one.

SAN FRANCISCO WINS PCL SERIES

The San Francisco Seals proved good pitching beats good hitting, at least this season. The Seals, who led the PCL regular season in most pitching and defensive categories beat the mighty Mission Reds, featuring the league's best offense 4 games to two.

The two clubs split the opening two games in Mission with each contest being decided by a single run. Game Three in San Francisco was also a tight affair, with the visitors prevailing 3-2. The Seals then reeled off three straight victories to take the series.

San Francisco third baseman Willie Kamm, who hit .348 with 2 homers and 7 rbi's in the series, was named the MVP.

DIMAGGIO UPDATE
Vince DiMaggio got 2 at bats in the series for Mission but went 0-for-2. On the season the 22 year old outfielder appeared in 73 games, almost exclusively as a pinch-hitter, batting .224. In two seasons with Mission, DiMaggio is hitting .238 in 72 at bats with a homerun and 8 rbi's.

It was a tough year for 19 year old Joe DiMaggio, as he missed nearly 100 games with various injuries. After getting just 107 at bats as a rookie in 1932 (.336,2,15), Joe became a regular with the Stars (when healthy) had 418 at bats, hitting .304 with 7 homers and 46 rbi's. The Stars as a team did not improve much, finishing 7th with an 87-114 record despite signing a number of free agents in the off-season.

1934 DRAFT
The big prize in the 1934 draft was 16 year old second baseman Bobby Doerr. The Los Angeles native went first overall to Sacramento but it might be a couple of years before he makes an impact on the league. Hollywood took 19 year old third baseman Frankie Hawkins with the second pick. In real life Hawkins would never make the major leagues but did play close to 1100 games in the PCL with 5 teams.

1934 PCL RECAP

After an 8 year post-season drought the Oakland Oaks had a dominant 1934 campaign, finishing first in the regular season for just the second time in team history. The mid-season acquisition of Mel Mazzera (.333,10,77) helped ignite the Oakland offense, which was the league's most productive. Gene Lillard (.362,26,119) and Alex Metzler (.327,19,123) also played a big role.

Mission did not finish first but they did claim second and their 7th straight playoff berth. Vince DiMaggio (.250,5,29) stuck with the team the whole season but the stars were Tony Lazzeri (.294,18,85), Stan Hack (.385,12,122), Chick Hafey (.307,31,127) and Red Kress (.280,21,99). Getting George Rhodes (20-12) from Oakland for Mazzera gave the Reds 3 twenty game winners in the rotation as Rhodes joined Ken Penner (24-13) and Ossie Orwoll (21-12).

Defending champion San Francisco slopped to third as the Seals once again had great pitching - led by Mel Harder (23-16), Lefty Gomez (19-7) and Art McDougall (19-13) - but their offense was not enough to displace Oakland or Mission from the playoffs.

The fourth place Portland Beavers had their third straight 100 win season but the best they could do was finish fourth. 27 year old Vince Barton (.308,20,145), 22 year old Alex Kampouris (.334,23,111) and 21 year old Kenny Sheehan (21-14) provide hope for an eventual trip to the PCL Series.

Veteran Earl Averill (.317,44,145) returned to form for the Seattle Rainiers after being limited to just 4 games a year ago due to a broken elbow.

Joe DiMaggio had another injury plagues season in Hollywood. DiMaggio was limited to 86 games due to knee and ankle problems. He hit .285 with 5 homers and 36 rbi's as the Stars finished 6th.

Injuries derailed the Los Angeles Angels season, specifically that of Dolph Camilli. Camilli and the Angels got off to a fantastic start, he had 19 homers in the first 60 games of the season and the team was in second place. However, a broken wrist cost Camilli two months and Los Angeles slumped terribly. Despite playing just 153 of the 201 games, Camilli hit 42 homers and drove in 112 runs.

Last place once again was the property of the Sacramento Senators, who broke their own record for futility set last year by going 59-142 for the season. The one bright spot was Bobby Doerr, their 17 year old rookie, hit .284 in 93 starts.

PCL SERIES

It was the first ever meeting for Oakland and Mission in the playoffs and just the third ever appearance for the Oaks. There was plenty of offensive in the series, which was to be expected with these two teams. It went the distance with Mission rallying to claim the series by winning games 6 and 7 on the road.

Game Seven saw former Oakland ace Gordon Rhodes shutout his old teammates with a complete game 5 hitter in a 5-0 Mission victory for his second win of the series.

Mission 3B Harl Maggert was named series MVP after hitting .423 with 4 homers and 10 rbi's in the 7 games. The 21 year old Maggert, who in real life played briefly for the Boston Braves, hit .293 during the regular season which was his third in the PCL.

1935 PCL SEASON

Since I have the 1935 PCL schedule I will stop use the 1930 schedule and move to it. The result is the number of games will drop from 201 to 177 per team. That is good news for the Sacramento Solons as it will make it much more difficult to set a league record for losses in a season for the third straight year.

The Solons had first pick in the PCL draft and selected outfielder Brooks Holder. Holder spent nearly two decades in the PCL in real life and is a member of the PCL Hall of Fame. The Los Angeles Angels selected 17 year old catcher Ed Fernandes with the second pick. An Oakland native, Fernandes saw some action in real life with Pittsburgh and the White Sox. Hollywood took 20 year old outfielder Wally Judnich third.

DIMAGGIO
The main focus of this little sim was to be on Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams once he debuts but it is looking like a bust for DiMaggio at least. DiMaggio had been bothered by injuries each of his previous 3 seasons and 1935 was no different. He was limited to just 57 games, batting .302 with 4 homers, because of knee troubles, a hamsting injury and finally a fractured hand.

Joe D is listed as fragile now and has yet to play anything resembling a full season. It is looking like he will never pan out. I could, of course, edit his injury settings but that is a slippery slope I never go down with any of historical replays. I prefer to let things play out.

Maybe it is Hollywood that is the issue as the injury bug has not been restricted to DiMaggio. The Stars signed infielder Tony Lazzeri away from Mission in the off-season and the 32 year old, who had never missed significant time with injury suffered two different injuries with the Stars that cost him 6 weeks each time and limited Lazzeri to a career low 78 games played.

REGULAR SEASON
The Mission Reds made the playoffs for the 8th consecutive year despite the defection of Lazzeri. Stan Hack (.381,7,110) was nosed out by San Francisco's Steve Coscarart (.383,4,90) in his quest for a 4th straight batting title but the Reds once again had the best team offense. Chick Hafey (.381,7,110), Ernie Lombardi (.305,12,124) and Vince DiMaggio (.272,19,72) played key roles. Mission's pitching was outstanding led by former Oakland Oak Gordon Rhodes (26-11), Ken Penner (22-6) and Ossie Orwoll (24-11).

The San Francisco Seals rebounded to finish second and return to the playoffs. Pitching was again the Seals strength led by a rotation of Mel Harder (20-13), Manny Salvo (17-11), Lefty Gomez (15-9) and Art McDougall (16-12).

Another big year for Dolph Camilli (.295,46,138) as the slugger helped carry Los Angeles to third place. Camilli, the PCL's all-time homerun leader, surpassed the 400 mark and ended the season with 409. Mission's Chick Hafey is #2 on the list with 346 career round-trippers.

The remaining teams all finished below .500 including Oakland as the Oaks took a dramatic fall from first place a year ago to finishing 31 games back this season. Free agent losses of pitchers Lum Davenport and Marty Dumovich to Los Angeles (the pair combined for 40 wins a year ago) proved too costly to overcome although catcher Gene Lillard stepped up as a 2-way player and was 21-14 while still batting .274 with 14 homers in 99 games.

OTHER NOTES
Steve Coscarart not only won the batting title but the 24 year old San Francisco Seals second year outfielder set a league record by getting a hit in 36 consecutive games. The previous mark was 34 established by Ernie Orsatti of Mission.

PCL SERIES
Just like last season this one went the full seven games and Mission once again emerged on top. The Reds won the first two contests at home before the Seals took the next two in San Francisco. Game five went to Mission with the Seals staying alive with a 5-3 win in Game Six. Game seven featured Gordon Rhodes, who was the game seven winner a year ago, against Lefty Gomez of the Seals. Both pitchers went the distance with each allowing just 5 hits. San Francisco took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to Gomez delivering a rbi single.

Gomez was perfect through four but Chick Hafey led off the Mission 5th with a single and moved to second on an Ernie Lombardi bouncer that just got thru the infield. After a sac bunt moved them to second and third, Vince DiMaggio tied the game with a sacrifice fly scoring Hafey. Gomez intentionally walked the number 8 hitter to face Mission pitcher Rhodes but the move backfired as Rhodes ripped a single that scored Lombardi from second with what would prove to be the series winning run. It ended 2-1 Mission as the Reds claimed their second straight PCL Series title and 5th in the past 8 years.

Stan Hack, the Reds 26 year old first baseman, was named the Series MVP. Hack provided a number of key hits in the series and batting .423.

PCL 1936 RECAP

The Sacramento Senators have been awful the entire decade so it is not surprising they wanted an image change. The club has been renamed the Solons for the 1936 season. Meanwhile, Joe DiMaggio and the Hollywood Stars have decided to move south and will now play out of San Diego as the Padres.

The 1936 draft was as hyped as the 1932 version that brought a teenage Joe DiMaggio to the league. This time the big name is Ted Williams, who is drafted as an 18 year old first overall by Sacramento. Oakland selects 21 year old second baseman Joe Gordon second overall with Portland grabbing 3B Frankie Kelleher with the third pick. Other picks of note see Seattle take Bob Elliott 4th, San Diego select Johnny Lindell with pick 5 and Johnny Hopp going 7th to the San Francisco Seals.

SEASON
Once again Mission and San Francisco dominated things with the Seals going 110-65 to claim top spot, 7 games ahead of Mission. The Seals success was due to their pitching as usual with Mel Harder going 26-7, but they also lead the league in homeruns thanks to Johnny Hopp (.324,19,117), Babe Dahlgren (.287,19,117) and Frankie Crosetti (.332,18,92). Mission's offense has always been it's strength and the trio of Stan Hack (.346,11,97), Chick Hafey (.379,25,140) and Ernie Lombardi (.298,10,108) were joined by Orv Mohler (.320,13,102). Pitching was solid for the Reds with 4 very good starters in Ossie Orwoll (19-8), Syl Johnson (18-14), Sam Gibson (19-18) and the emergence of rookie Clint Raper (19-5).

The transplanted Hollywood Stars enjoyed great success in their first season in San Diego, winning 99 games and finishing with a .559 winning percentage - their best since 1923. Joe DiMaggio still missed 6 weeks with hamstring troubles but did play in a career hit 131 games, batting .320 with 15 homers and 81 rbi's. Tony Lazzeri (.238,17,86) played in 147 games but missed a month with an injury. 21 year old rookie pitcher Johnny Lindell (20-11, 3.60) looks to have a bright future.

Despite not turning 19 until late in the season Ted Williams appeared in 136 games for the Sacramento Solons. His numbers weren't great (.229,6,62) but there is certainly great promise and with fellow 19 year old Bobby Doerr (.219,5,26) finally some hope for the future for the woeful Sacramento franchise.

PCL SERIES
A repeat of last season saw the San Francisco Seals square off with the Mission Reds. The Reds won in 7 games a year ago but it was much easier this time around for Mission as they came out on top in 5 games. The only Seals win was in Game Two at home.

All the games were close, with 4 of the five being decided by just a single run. Rookie pitcher Clint Raper was the hero, winning game one 5-4 and going the distance in a 2-1 win in Game Five - both victories against Seals ace Mel Harder.

Vince DiMaggio played a big role despite getting just 1 at bat, but it was a huge 8th inning 2-run pinch-hit homer to prove the margin of victory in Game three.

For the second year in a row the Series MVP award went to Mission first baseman Stan Hack, who was 9-for-22 (.409) in the series. I would have gone with Raper, who was 2-0 with 15 strikeouts and a 2.00 era in the series.

I tried to find some information on the real-life Clint Raper but there seems to be little out there beyond baseball reference. He made his minor league debut in 1936 with Siloam Springs of the Arkansas-Missouri lead and went 23-7. The Reds then signed him to their minor league system and he got as high as Durham of the Piedmont League before moving to the Cubs organization. He pitched 1 game for the 1941 Hollywood Stars (hence his inclusion here) and also pitched for Muskogee that same season. I assume he joined the war effort as his career ends following the 1941 season at the age of 25.

Both teams were based in San Francisco. In fact, both teams played their home games in the same ballpark.

TigerFan, just wondering, did you eliminated the major leagues and the other minors, or are they there in your world, but you just ignore them and play out the PCL as GM of a team or as Commissioner/observer?

I am wondering because I did once start a league with the same idea, but then worried about two problems:

1) what would happen when major league teams drafted or purchased the players out of the PCL? How could I guarantee sufficient rosters and league coherence?

2) where would new players in the PCL come from? Is there going to be a draft? Will the AI provide historical PCL players generation after generation?

Worried about the first i eliminated the majors, but then I got worried about the second. In the end I decided it was too complicated for me, but if you know how to overcome those problems (and you are our guru on working around things with these sort of setups), it would be greatly appreciated.

Indeed, I would love to be able to eventually create a league consisting only of the PCL; the historical Negro Leagues and Texas League - maybe one or two other leagues if there were any others at that level for some period of time (1930-1950 maybe?) without having to deal much or at all with the Majors. But how to know that players will show up in minor leagues, and avoiding the risk of having fictional players which I don't want. Thanks.

I eliminated all other leagues including MLB and deleted all players I did not want in my PCL. For each draft class I manually imported the players I wanted.
