In previous years, doubt and despair might have crept into the clubhouse after the team dropped the opening game of a short best-of-5 series; but this year's crop of Syrups kept their focus.
After a solid outing from Ed Walsh in the game 1 loss (3-1), the team remained strong and took games 2, 3 and 4 to claim the LDS 3 games to 1. first baseman George Sisler was named series MVP (1 home run, 8 rbis, .360 avg). Waffletown moves on to the LCS to face top seed Chernobyl Meltdowns. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with the Syrups taking the series 4 games to 3. |

And it's a quick 4 and out in the LCS for Waffletown as the team apparently couldn't remember how to play the game they've been going at for 170 games this season.... fans will have to continue to wait for that first elusive Perfect tier championship.

Heading into June, the Syrups are riding the regular season wave of success from last season as the team continues to click on all cylinders. Thanks to a 13 game winning streak in May (21-7 overall for that month), Waffletown sits atop the AC West division with a record of 36-19.
"Everything is falling into place at the same time. It definitely makes coming to work a lot of fun." said long time Syrup Johnny Pesky. As solid proof that both the offense and defense are both on their game at the same time, Waffletown shows up all over the league leaderboards as the team ranks in the top 3 in runs scored, average, runs allowed, defensive efficiency and starter's era. On the individual leaderboards for the AC conference, Waffletown players are top 3 in batting average, rbis (all 3 slots), stolen bases, batter war, hitting streaks (all 3 slots), era, and wins. Management hopes the team can continue their solid play throughout the regular season. They know the post season will still be a huge challenge with some of the stacked teams in the league, but know their squad can hang with the best of them. |

With improvements tough to unearth as the team gathers more and more solid players, it's always a bonus when the scouting department can find players that can crack the 25 man roster. Joining the squad:
Charles Bender - 97 While the Chief has a solid enough arm to slide into the starting rotation, management will slot him into the closer role and shift long-time closer, Wilcy Moore into a setup role. Sad Sam Jones will be sent to the reserves to make room. https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/03e80f4d Last edited by stl jason; 12-19-2019 at 01:33 PM. |

Do you have any southpaws in your starting rotation? Or are you using righties?
I've been thinking about replacing Eddie Plank with Bob Caruthers on my Pirates team for an all righty starting staff. Regardless, who are the 5 Syrups starters at the moment? |

1- Ed Walsh (R) 2- Harry Brecheen (L) 3- Smoky Joe Wood (R) 4- Max Lanier (L) 5- Lefty Gomez (L) Plank is the only lefty in my bullpen at the moment... thought about moving Gomez there and putting Cooper or Rigney in the rotation, but Gomez already has a 123 stuff rating as a starter and won't get much of a boost heading to the pen, so just leaving him in the 5 slot figure if/when I finish the A's collection (5 cards to go), either Gomez or Lanier will shift to the pen to make room for the Rube. |

For the 5th time in 6 seasons at the top tier, Waffletown secured a post season birth. While the team held onto the division lead in the AC West for a large portion of the season, they knew it would be a monumental feat to hold off division rival Santurce (and their squad of 16 perfect players). When the dust settled, the Syrups record of 95-67 was good enough to secure the top wild card spot and a second place finish, 4 games back of the lead.
From the mound, Ed Walsh dominated for the first half of the season (going 13-0 before being tagged with a loss), and ended up breaking the single season team record for wins (just set last season by Wood and Brecheen) with his new mark of 24 While on the subject of pitching, the staff as a whole had a stellar year, setting team records for ERA (3.18), hits allowed (1215), runs allowed (548), earned runs (512), offensive average (.225), and complete games (31). At the plate, Harry Heilmann was in the zone anytime he game up to bat with runners on base. He finished with a league leading 145 RBIs, which was also good enough to break the team single season mark of 138 (previously held by Heilmann as well and set in 2045). Heilmann also set a new single season team mark for plate appearances at 739. Luke Appling set a new single season team mark for on base percentage at .409 Heilmann also tied the team RBI streak mark of 9, matching his own record set in 2034 and 2051 (and by George Sisler in 2050); and Ed Walsh set a new win streak mark with 13; breaking the old mark of 11 set by Eddie Plank in 2035 and Smoky Joe Wood in 2045 Wafffletown will host the Perham Dragons in the wild card match. The two teams met 7 times during the regular season, with Perham taking the series 4 games to 3 |

the wild card game went to extras and when the dust settled, Perham emerged with a 6-5 victory to move on.
Management is going to chalk up the plethora of late inning chokes to first season jitters for new closer Chief Bender (1-7 record during the regular season, and blowing the WC game lead). Bender will start the new season in the same role but will be under close scrutiny. If he continues to show an inability to close out games, a new shuffle of roles might be in order. |

the new season is just hours away, and after a quick browse through the new league, management and fans in Waffletown are hoping for a solid regular season and hopefully a strong playoff push. Only two teams of the thirty have ever won a Perfect tier championship (one team has won it twice; the other has a single title), so it doesn't appear there are any juggernaut teams in the mix.

A new face arrived in Waffletown on the evening of June 23rd, thanks to a diamond-in-the-rough find by the scouting department:
LF - Sherry Magee (98) Magee will take up residence in left field and slide into the 3rd batting position. Martin Dihigo will shift to the bench to backup the outfield positions; and Stan Musial will be sent to the reserves. Management hopes Magee's combination of contact, power and speed will make him a solid threat at the plate and boost the offense to the next level. https://sabr.org/bioproj/person/303fac26 Last edited by stl jason; 12-19-2019 at 01:35 PM. |

Great name!
I hope his 100 baserunning doesn't take a hit running the basepaths where Aunt Jemima flows freely out of the Waffletown sprinklers lol I'm a bit jealous |

yeah, I was just browsing the AH to see who was out there/the going rates (not that I have enough to afford any impact players) and saw a bunch of Magee offerings.... so I looked up the Phillies mission that offered him as a prize and realized I already had O'Doul and Hamilton, and only needed 5 cards to finish it.... nabbed all five of those for about 8500 points (surprised they were all out there and at reasonable offerings)... and added Magee to the roster... didn't expect to get a new player tonight, but I'll take it |

Once again, the champagne flowed freely in the Waffletown clubhouse as the Syrups punched their ticket to the post season. The team had one of their best regular seasons ever, finishing at 103-59 (third time the team has surpassed the 100 win mark). The only downside this season was the fact the Syrups were in a division with a team that won 118 games, so their 103 wins were only good enough for a wild card spot (and it took every single win to secure the top wild card spot, as the team in WC number 2 won 102 games).
Waffletown will face the Phoenix Pack Mules in the wild card match. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Waffletown taking the series 4 games to 3. |

and 103 wins comes up to exactly squat as Waffletown falls in the wild card game 9-7
(narrator's biased rant: what kind of random number garbage is it when Ed Walsh gives up 7 runs in 1/3 of an inning pitched? Please.... I don't care what kind of lineup he's facing, that's just not realistic.... ok, rant over) |

The start to the new season has been rather lackluster at best (5-11 so far and the foundation of the division... aka - 5th place), but the defense has found moments to shine:
3rd triple play in Waffletown history.... if they can pull off one more this season it will set a new single season record (I'd say sorry to Lukas for turning the triple play against his bunch, but they won the game, so it's a wash ) |

On the barnstorming tournament front....
Lefty Gomez puts on a near-one-man show in the Daily Diamond Historical tourney, going 10.1 innings and striking out 23 batters in a 1-0 victory (he didn't get the win, but the team did): |

Syrups barnstorming tourney groups are finding their niche.... along with the gold level squad that has raked in a large number of wins, the recently formed 1750 cap squad has put on an impressive run, tallying their second tourney win and pulling in 3 additional second place finishes in ten attempts (a nice 50% prize return on the investment):

After a rough start to the season (10-18 after April), Waffletown fans were expecting one of those dismal seasons where they struggle against relegation. The team made a complete turnaround in May (20-8) and kept the solid play up for most of the remaining season. When the dust settled, the champagne corks were flying in the clubhouse for the 23rd time in team history and 4th consecutive time as the Syrups claimed the top wild card spot.
"We weren't worried with the slow start..." said long-time catcher Ernie Lombardi. "...we've been through a lot together, so we know what this club is capable of. Now we just need to get over that last hump and bring home a Perfect tier title." Waffletown will host the Mizzou YakAnglers in the wild card match. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Mizzou winning the series 4 games to 3. |

The Spile erupted in celebration as their boys made a thrilling comeback to score 4 runs in their final two innings at bat (2 in the 7th, 2 in the 8th) to secure a 5-4 wild card victory.
While the celebration in the stands and outside the park were a raucous affair, the tone in the clubhouse was more subdued. "We've been to this point before. One wild card victory isn't going to cut it. We need to stay focused 'cause it's just going to get harder from here on out." said reliever Mort Cooper. Waffletown moves on to the LDS to face top seed Nice Aigles. The two teams met seven times during the regular season, with Waffletown taking the series 4 games to 3. |
