Walkers news: May 10 -- St. Louis 6, Chicago 4

Record: 16-12, 2nd, 1 GB Des Moines
Rookie Steve Ruland continued to have an impressive introduction to the major league contributing a two-run single and three RBIs altogether to help send St. Louis to a 6-4 win over Chicago at Wrigley Field (1979).
With the win, the River Walkers took two of three games from the G-Men.
Tied 1-1, St. Louis took the lead for good with a two-run top of the third inning.
The long ball accounted for both runs in the third, Edmond Americaan and Jean Carmona going back-to-back against Chicago starter Brent Honeywell.
The Walkers lead sitting at 3-2, they added two more runs in the sixth Ruland with a two-run single off reliever Taylor Rogers and make it 5-2.
Two innings later, St.Louis loaded the bases to set the stage for Ruland to draw a run-scoring walk from Jamie Callahan.
St. Louis starter Alex Faedo worked six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked one.

John Curtiss worked a scoreless seventh inning.
Bobby Poyner got the first out of the eighth, before giving way to Reyes Moronta who finished the inning.
Moronta recorded the first two outs in the ninth, but gave up a two-run homer to Gleyber Torres.
This led to closer Tommy Kahnle entering the game. He struck out Ryan Jeffers to end it, and notch his fifth save.

Walkers news: Benintendi to miss three weeks

The St. Louis River Walkers have announced outfielder Andrew Benintendi will miss three weeks with a sprained knee suffered in a May 8 game against Chicago.
In 27 games this season, the 28-year-old Benintendi was batting .263 with three homers and 17 RBIs.
Getting the callup from AAA Memphis will be 22-year-old outfielder Larry Ernesto.
It will be the second callup of the season for Ernesto, in an earlier stint in the majors he batted .214 with one homer and three RBIs in seven games.
At Memphis, Ernesto is batting ..227 with one homer and eight RBIs in 16 games.

Cedar Rapids exploded for five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against the St. Louis bullpen and carry it to a 5-1 win at Shibe Park (1949).
The River Walkers' Bo Bichette had led off the top of the fourth with a double off Golden Grapplers starting pitcher Merandy Gonzalez and scored on a sacrifice fly for the only run of the game up to the bottom of the eighth.
After recording an out to open the eighth, St. Louis reliever Reyes Moronta walked Matt McLain and allowed a double to Alex Bregman to put runners at second and third, and lead to Moronta's exit.
Jake Brentz entered the game and promptly hit Dominic Smith, loading the bases.
John Curtiss then replaced Brentz and allowed a sacrifice fly to Domingo Santana to tie the score.
Joc Pederson received an intentional walk to again load the bases.
Victor Robles then responded with the big hit, cranking a three-run double to make it 4-1.
Terrin Vavra followed with another single, also off Curtiss, to make it 5-1.
Gonzalez worked 6.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out one and walked three.

Zach Schellenger finished the seventh and worked a scoreless eighth for the Grapplers.
The ninth belonged to Taylor Bashlor, who sent St. Louis down in order.
The eighth-inning meltdown spoiled a strong start for Walkers starter Argenis Batista, who worked six shutout innings. He allowed just three hits while striking out nine and issuing three bases on balls.

Down 2-1, St. Louis scored three times in the top of the seventh inning to spur it to a 5-2 victory over Cedar Rapids at Shibe Park (1949).
Pinch-hitter Jared Thomas got it started with a lead-off walk from reliever Thomas Burrows.
Burrows retired the next two batters, but walked Bo Bichette and Rhys Hoskins followed with a three-run homer.
It's lead at 4-2, the River Walkers added another run in the top of the eighth.
J.T. Realmuto led off with a double off Taylor Bashlor.
Bashlor retired the next two batters, before walking Edmond Americaan.
Realmuto then scored on a Bashlor wild pitch.
Walkers starting pitcher Brandon Spagnuolo worked 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
Six relievers -- Brad Hand (1.1 IP), Thad Ward (0.1), Jake Brentz (0.2), Reyes Moronta (0.2), Bobby Poyner (0.0) and John Curtiss (1.1) -- combined to finish the game without allowing a run.
Hand earned his first win of the season. Curtiss got save No. 1.

Walkers news: Maton activated from IL; Warson designated for assignment

The St. Louis River Walkers have activated right-handed relief pitcher Phil Maton from the injured list and placed righty Bill Warson on waivers with the intention of sending him to AAA Memphis.
Maton, 30, has been out since May 3 with a strained oblique.
Prior to the injury. Maton had pitched in 11 games posting a record of 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA. He had pitched a total of nine innings, striking out eight and boasting a WHIP of 0.67.
Warson, 26, has pitched in 10 games for the Walkers, with a record of 0-2 and 3.95 ERA. He has worked 13.2 innings, striking out 12 and owns a WHIP of 1.39.

St. Louis jumped out to a 3-0 lead and then rode the power of a pair of late-game two-run homers to defeat Cedar Rapids 7-2 at Shibe Park (1949).
With the victory, the River Walkers took two of three games in the series.
The Walkers struck early with a pair of runs in the first.
Bo Bichette hit the first of his two homers in the game, a blast off Aaron Blair, to make it 1-0.

Two batters later, Rhys Hoskins put one over the wall pushing the advantage to 2-0.
Christian Arroyo doubled off Blair in the second and scored on an Edmond Americaan single.
But a two-run triple from Alex Bregman off Walkers starter Aaron Nola in the sixth, sliced that lead to 3-2.
The Walkers, however, flexed their muscles again in the eighth when Byron Buxton launched a two-run bomb off Carson Smith.
A inning later, Bichette collected his second homer of the game, this one off Joe Musgrove, to up the Walkers' advantage to 7-2.
St.Louis starter Aaron Nola worked 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits.
Brad Hand finished the sixth inning.
Jake Brentz kept the Golden Grapplers off the board in the seventh and eighth.
Just off the disabled list, Phil Maton had a quiet ninth to cap the victory.

Mookie Betts hit a three-run homer off St. Louis reliever Bobby Poyner in the top of the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and spur Kansas City to a 5-2 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
River Walkers starting pitcher Kyle Hendricks lasted just one batter -- a ground out by Pit Masters lead-off hitter Greg Jones -- before departing with a dead arm.
He is expected to miss five days and should be able to make his next start.
Two batters later, Danny Cushing put Kansas City in front with a solo homer off reliever Thad Ward.
St. Louis tied it in the bottom of the second on a Byron Buxton homer off Masters starter Trevor Oaks.
Ward began to tire in the fourth, issuing back-to-back one-out walks to Joey Gallo and Brian Mundell.
Poyner took over and struck out Yordan Alvarez.
But Betts pounded a 2-2 pitch some 434 feet over the left-field wall to put Kansas City ahead for good.
The Masters added an insurance run in the sixth when Mundell connected for an RBI double off John Curtiss.
Rookie pinch-hitter Larry Ernesto hit his second homer of the season in the eighth off Andrew Ryan.
Oaks lasted six innings for K.C., allowing the one run on five hits.
David Berg got the first out of the seventh. Ryan handled the rest of that inning and all of the eighth.
Zach Burdi earned his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.

Nicky Delmonico hit a three-run home run off Kansas City starting pitcher Dinelson Lamet in the bottom of the third inning to wipe out a 2-0 deficit and spur St. Louis to a 3-2 win at Busch Stadium (1997).
Joey Gallo pounded a two-run homer off River Walkers starter Alex Faedo in the top of the first to put the Pit Masters in front.
St. Louis added an insurance run in the fourth -- Bo Bichette drew a lead-off walk, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Faedo singled with two outs -- and it proved important as Kansas City pulled back with a run in the eighth.
Brian Mundell connected on a bases-loaded single off Phil Maton to make it 4-3.
With the bases still jammed and two outs, Bobby Poyner came on and struck out Yordan Alvarez to end the inning.
Faedo pitched 6.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out 10 and walked one.
He also was 2 for 2 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Jake Brentz got the final out of the seventh inning and the first two outs in the eighth.
Tommy Kahnle handled the ninth, earning his sixth save.

Max Fried worked five scoreless innings and combined with four relievers on an eight-hit shutout in Kansas City's 3-0 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997).
With the win, the Pit Masters took two of three games from the River Walkers.
Fried gave up three hits in his time on the mound. He struck out six and walked none.
Four relievers -- Kyle Nelson, Andrew Ryan, Dario Alvarez, and Zach Burdi -- all worked an inning apiece to close it out.
Burdi earned his seventh save of the season.
Kansas City broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth when Greg Jones got a lead-off bunt down and reached base against St. Louis starter Argenis Batista.
He would score on a one-out double by Brian Mundell.
Home runs provided the Masters' other two runs.
Danny Cushing took Batista deep to lead off the seventh inning.
In the eighth, Brian Mundell knocked a one-out bomb off Brad Hand.

Rookie Larry Ernesto capped a 4 for 5 effort with a game-winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 11th inning to give St. Louis a 4-3 win over Toledo at Busch Stadium (1997).
Edmond Americaan led off the bottom of the 11th with a single off Mud Hens reliever Brian Clark. A Christian Arroyo single moved him to second before Nicky Delmonico struck out for the first out.
Justin Dunn replaced Clark and saw the bases become loaded when Rhys Hoskins reached on an error by third baseman Todd Frazier.
Ernesto, who had four singles in his previous five at bats, then drove a fly ball to center deep enough to score Americaan.
St. Louis had 17 hits in the game, 16 of them singles.
Toledo took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs off St. Louis starter Brendan Spagnuolo in the third inning.
But the River Walkers went on top in the fourth with three runs off reliever Javier Medina.
Hens starter Josh Tomlin had left the game after being injured while legging out a double in the third.
Brock Holt drove in the first run with a fielder's choice.
The other two scored on a Spagnuolo single and Americaan double, respectively.
Toledo tied it in the seventh on a Josh Bell homer off Bobby Poyner.
Spagnuolo worked six innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

It took five relievers -- Jake Brentz (1.0), Phil Maton (0.2), Poyner (0.1), John Curtiss (2.0) and Reyes Moronta (1.0) -- to cover the final six innings.
Moronta earned his first win of the season.

Jean Carmona connected for a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Bo Bichette and give St. Louis a second-straight extra-inning win over Toledo, this time 2-1 at Busch Stadium (1997).
Bichette had drawn a one-out walk from Mud Hens relief pitcher Ian Hamilton.
Justin Dunn then entered the game for Toledo and on his first pitch, Bichette stole second and moved to third when catcher Sean Langeliers throw reached the outfield.
Carmona then lifted a Dunn pitch into the outfield, bringing home Bichette.
St. Louis managed just two hits in the game, which was one less than Toledo's total.
The Mud Hens went up 1-0 in the top of the first after Justin Davidson led the game off with a double off River Walkers starter Aaron Nola and later scored when Carmona, at shortstop, misplayed a ball hit by Langeliers.
St. Louis would not tie it until the bottom of the ninth.
Nicky Delmonico drew a lead-off walk from Ian Hamilton and moved to second on an Edmond Americaan bunt.
A Christian Arroyo ground ball plated Delmonico on third.
Rookie Larry Ernesto then tied it with a single.
Nola worked seven strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits. He struck out eight and walked one.
Jake Brentz handled the eighth inning for the Walkers.
The ninth was divided between Phil Maton (0.2 IP) and Brad Hand (0.1).
Thad Ward worked a silent 10th and was awarded his first win for it.
The loss wiped out an impressive start for the Hens Luke Weaver.
He allowed no runs and just one hits over 7.1 innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Americaan had reached on a one-out walk from Toledo reliever Sandy Alcantara.
Bichette doubled on a 3-2 pitch, scoring Americaan with the game-winning run.
Down 3-0, St. Louis got back into it with a five-run bottom of the fourth.
Nicky Delmonico did the bulk of the damage with a grand slam off Hens starter Cole Duensing.
The Walkers added another run when Byron Buxton tripled with two outs off reliever Danny Ure.
That hit scored Rhys Hoskins, who had drew a walk from Duensing.
Toledo tied it in the top of the seventh, Yasiel Puig and Shea Langeliers opening with inning with back-to-back homers off reliever John Curtiss.
Walkers starter Kyle Hendricks continued to struggle but made it through five innings, allowing three runs on four hits.

Bobby Poyner pitched the sixth inning and Thad Ward, who reliever Curtiss after the consecutive homers, did yeoman's work with three shutiout innings.
Closer Tommy Kahnle tossed a perfect 10th, setting himself up to earn his first win of the season.

Walkers news: May 22 -- Toglia called up from AAA Memphis; Carmona sent down to Redbirds

The St. Louis River Walkers have called up 24-year-old outfielder Michael Toglia from AAA Memphis, where he was on an injury rehab assignment after spending 10 days on the injury list with an intercostal strain.

Going down to the Redbirds are 23-year-old shortstop Jean Carmona.
Toglia and Carmona were both in the opening day lineup for the Walkers, but have struggled through the first month-plus of the season.
Toglia has batted .213 in 24 games with one homer and eight RBIs.
In his rehab stint in Memphis, he played in three games, batting .286 wit a homer and six RBIs.
Carmona had played in 23 games for St. Louis, batting .206 with five homers and 17 RBIs.

Walkers news: May 22 -- Columbus 9, St. Louis 8

Record: 22-16, 1st (Tied/w. Des Moines), 1 GA Kansas City
Columbus needed just two innings to jump out to a 6-0 lead, but in the end it had to hold on for a 9-8 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997).
The River Walkers had their chance in the bottom of the ninth after a one-out double from Bo Bichette off Golden Bears closer Omar Garcia.
Garcia struck out Nicky Delmonico, who had hit a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to make it 9-7, before issuing a walk to Christian Arroyo.
Rookie Michael Toglia then hit a sinking liner to center, which center fielder Zack Granite has able to corral with a diving catch to end it.
The Golden Bears worked over St. Louis starting pitcher Alex Faedo with three runs in each of the first two innings.
Jeimer Candelario drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Xander Bogaerts contributed an RBI single in the first.
The second was all about a three-run homer from Ozzie Albies.
He would add a second home run in the sixth off reliever Bobby Poyner, the opener of back-to-back blasts with Bryce Harper which made it 9-5.
Poyner has allowed five homers in just 11.1 innings this season.
A big bottom of the fifth, where they scored five runs, had allowed the Walkers to climb back to with 7-5.
All the runs came via the long ball, Andrelton Simmons driving in the first two. Rookie Larry Ernesto later hit his third homer of the season, a three-run shot.
Bears starter David Peterson allowed both homers.
After Albies and Harper's homers had pushed the Columbus advantage back to four runs, St. Louis closed it back to within a run with its three-run eighth.
Delmonico's 11th homer of the season, off Blake Snell, made it 9-7.
Toglia later doubled and scored in a single from pinch-hitter Jared Thomas off Mauricio Cabrera.
Peterson lasted just four innings for Columbus, allowing five runs on six hits.
Gibson earned his first win of the season, by shutting out St. Louis, through the seventh.
Snell and Cabrera combined on that three-run eighth.
Garcia handled all of the ninth.

Columbus manhandled Argenis Batista for seven runs over five innings to send it on the way to a 7-4 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium.
The Golden Bears went to work in the top of the second, Jonathan Lucroy launching a three-run homer to open the scoring.
After three and a half innings, it was 5-0 courtesy of a sacrifice fly from Bryce Harper and a A.J. Pollack RBI single.
A Michael Toglia run-scoring single off Columbus starter Francis Martes in the bottom of the fourth made it 5-1.
Columbus got the run back plus an addition one in the fifth, again of Batista, who came into the game leading the National League with a 2.05 ERA, David Dahl coming through with a two-out , two-run homer.
A three-run fourth pulled the Walkers back to within 7-4.
That was it for the scoring, as the Bears took their second straight win.
Martes handled the first five innings for Columbus, allowing four runs on three hits.
Erasmo Ramirez worked two innings, while Luis Ortiz and Jeurys Familia handled one apiece to close it out.
Familia earned his second save of the season.

Down 2-1, Columbus scored twice in the top of the fourth and added four more runs in the sixth to carry it to a 7-5 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997).
With the win, the Golden Bears swept their three-game series against the River Walkers.
A one-out homer from David Dahl off St. Louis starting pitcher Brendan Spagnuolo tied it in the top of the fourth.
Xander Bogaerts followed with a double and scored on a two-out single by pitcher Clayton Kershaw.
Spagnuolo went back out for the sixth and immediately got into trouble, issuing a lead-off walk to Bogaerts.
Catcher Oscar Hernandez followed with a two-run homer, his second of the season, making it 5-2.
Spagnuolo stayed in to face pitcher Kyle Gibson and gave up a single, leading to his departure.
Thad Ward took over and allowed consecutive singles to A.J. Pollack and Ozzie Albies.
He then issued back-to-back walks to Bryce Harper and Jeimer Candelario to bring in another run.
Reyes Moronta replaced Ward and struck out Paul Goldschmidt.
However, the fifth walk of the inning Dahl made it 7-2.
The Walkers sliced the deficit to 7-5 with three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Home runs accounted for them all, Michael Toglia led off the inning with a homer off Gibson.

Kershaw pitched four innings, giving up two runs on six hits.
He was followed to the mound by six relievers -- Gibson (1.1 IP), Ortiz (0.2), Blake Snell (1.0), Erasmo Ramirez (0.1), Mauricio Cabrera (0.2) and Omar Garcia (1.0) -- with Gibson earning the win, his second of the season, and Garcia notching his 12th save.

Walkers news: May 25 -- Springfield 4, St. Louis 3

Record: 22-19, 2nd (Tied/w. Kansas City), 3 GB Des Moines
Down 2-1, Springfield scored three times in the top of the seventh inning, paving the way for a 4-3 win over St. Louis at Busch Stadium (1997).
Kevin Pillar got things going with a one-out solo homer off River Walkers starting pitcher Aaron Nola.
With Nola still in the game, the St. Louis bullpen is running on fumes following a string of short starts, Wander Samuel Franco drew a two-out walk.
Max Schrock followed with a triple, putting the Prairie Fighters in front 3-2.
Jake Brentz replaced Nola and struggled issuing consecutive walks to Nate Traylor and Gary Sanchez.
A wild pitch then brought Schrock across the plate, and make it 4-2.
St. Louis got back within 4- with a run in the bottom of the eighth.
The Walkers then loaded the bases in the ninth against Hector Neris.
But with two outs Chaz Roe came on and struck out Bo Bichette to end it.
Springfield starter David Mengden worked four innings, allowing one run on two hits.
D.J. Jefferson handled the next two, allowing one run on two hits.
Four relievers -- Jake Diekman (1.0 IP), Alex Claudio (0.2), Neris (1.0) and Roe (0.1) -- combined to close it out.
Jefferson earned his first win. Roe got his first save.
