The Canadian Baseball League

Chapter 1: The Early Days

Prologue

In 1925, 2 leagues formed in 2 separate parts of Canada, with 8 teams each.

In the eastern part of the country, there was the Provincal Baseball Union of Canada.

And in the western part of the country, mostly the prairies, was the Western Canadian Baseball Association.

Each league will have a 4 team playoff.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the Calgary Black Sox defeated the Medicine Hat Mad Hatters in the finals in 2 games, while in the PBUC, both Toronto teams made the finals, with the Maple Leafs winning in 3 games. In game 2 of the Toronto series, the Leafs won 12-11, for a combined 23 runs. That's insane.

1927 Season

The London Tigers of the PBUC fold due to a lack of funding and dwindling attendance.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

The PBUC only played 86 games due to a players strike during pre-season.

The Calgary Black Sox win their second straight championship in 2 games, this time against the Vancouver Ravens, while the Montreal Royals defeat the Fredericton Beavers in 3 games.

However, the PBUC was brought back up to 8 teams after 2 teams, the Belleville Bears and the Cape Breton Islanders, were brought into the league.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the Eston Ramblers beat the Edmonton Eskimos in 3 games, while the Fredericton Beavers swept the Halifax Sailors in 2 games in the PBUC.

Chapter 2: The Depression Era

Now this is where things start to get interesting.

Due to the Great Depression, a lot of teams ended up struggling financially, and attendance was what you'd expect if you know the whole details of the depression.

1929 Season

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the Vancouver Ravens won their first championship in a 2 game sweep over the Winnipeg Maroons. In the PBUC, the Montreal Royals won their 2nd championship in 3 years, also in 2 games.

1931 Season

Due to the depression, coupled with an extremely small market and lack of an adequate ballpark, the Eston Ramblers owner Tom Gee decided to move the team to Regina's flashy new 5000 seat ballpark in hopes of saving the team from becoming the next to fold due to financial difficulty. While the small town was sad to see their team go, they understood the move, and fans from the area followed them to Regina.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the move paid off, as the Regina Roughriders won the championship in just their first season playing in the city, while the Montreal Royals of the PBUC won their third championship in 4 years. We might be witnessing the very first dynasty in this simulation.

In terms of league news, the 2 leagues have been rumored to be working together to hold a tournament pitting the 2 champions of the 2 leagues against one another. There are also rumors of a potential merger in the near future.

1932 Season

The Belleville Bears fold due to financial difficulty. What a surprise.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the Vancouver Ravens won their third championship, and in the PBUC, it would be the Fredericton Beavers winning their second championship.

Also, the rumors were true. Starting in 1933, both champions of each league will compete in a 5 game series for the Phillips Cup, named after Bill Phillips, the first Canadian-born player to play a major league game.

Chapter 3: The first Phillips Cups

1933 Season

Due to yet another players strike, only 86 games were played in the PBUC.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, the Winnipeg Railers won their first championship, while in the PBUC, the Cape Breton Islanders came out of nowhere and upset the Montreal Royals in 3 games to become the first PBUC expansion team to win the championship.

However, that's where the story ended for the Islanders, as reality set in and they got swept by the Railers in the first Phillips Cup.

1934 Season

The Medicine Hat Mad Hatters and the Halifax Sailors fold due to financial difficulty. The Hatters are the first WCBA team to fold.

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

In the WCBA, Vancouver wins their third championship, while the Montreal Royals win their fourth championship in 6 years. Dynasty confirmed.

However in the Phillips Cup, Vancouver would win in 5 games.

Due to increasing worries about both leagues futures, there were more talks of a merger between the 2 leagues. The PBUC and the WCBA reached a deal, and will both shut down after 1935, and become one unified league in 1936. The Phillips Cup will be under full control of the new unified league after 1935.

1935 Season

WCBA Standings:

PBUC Standings:

The Calgary Black Sox win the WCBA for the first time since 1927, and the Cape Breton Islanders win their second PBUC championship in 3 years.

The Cape Breton Islanders won the Phillips Cup in their second appearance.

The name for the new, unified league was announced during this season.

Everyone, say hello to the Canadian Baseball League!

And that wraps up the pre-unification part of the simulation. Now the title of the thread is relevant.

Chapter 4: The Unified League

Both leagues merged into one. There will be a west division with the WCBA teams, and an east division, with all the PBUC teams. The owners of the Winnipeg Railers and the Toronto Argonauts didn't approve of the merger, so they decided to fold their teams. Since the eastern division only had 5 teams when Toronto left, Quebec City got another chance at baseball with the addition of the Carnavals.

1936 Season

Standings:

In the playoffs, the Calgary Black Sox won their first Phillips Cup, and the first Phillips Cup in the unification era.

1939 Season

Standings:

Just before the playoffs, Canada joined World War 2. As you'd expect, a lot of players decided to join the Canadian military, and as a result, the talent pool was watered down a lot. Also, the first tiebreaker game happened, as the Quebec Carnavals and Toronto Maple Leafs were tied for the 4th seed in the east. Quebec would win that game and make the playoffs for the first time. Fun fact, if you look above, you can see that the Leafs lost a record 14 straight games including the tiebreaker. Yikes.

Calgary wins their second Phillips Cup.

In terms of team stability news, the Fredericton Beavers might not be in Fredericton much longer, as poor team play has caused attendance to go down, and with the war starting, could cause financial problems as more and more people join the military, which as a result means lower attendance, and lower profit for the team.

Despite the surprise playoff appearance, the future of the Beavers is still uncertain. Unless there is a big turnaround, the team could be gone by 1944.

1943 Season

The Beavers decided to move a year early to the relatively new Stade Municipal in Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.

Standings:

The Aigles swept the Calgary Black Sox to win their first Phillips Cup in their first season in Trois-Rivieres. Ouch.

Yes, I am aware that the Aigles are a real team. You can tell I am very original.
