New to the game.....

I played in OOTP 5 leagues for a very long time, but I never did the simming, and that game isn't nearly as involved as the newer versions.

I'm going to purchase OOTP 19 soon. My question is, those of you playing yourself, how are you doing it? I mean, what tasks are you doing, which are you simming through, things like that. Might be a dumb question, but do you control the actual in-game moves? Never did that in OOTP 5.

Just trying to figure out what I should expect when I start playing the game. Should I try to sim a game a day? Any additional hints/tips would be greatly appreciated as well. I'm 14 versions behind in knowledge. LOL

If you don't want to manage in-game, I have found that simming one day at a time creates more immersion. I usually quick-play my game and look at the box score. Then I simulate the rest of the games and check the results for other teams. Then I click next day and look at the injuries, transactions, and news before checking my own inbox and working on any GM functions that require my attention. Then it is time to quick-play another.

I use the same routine if I am managing, except I play out the game instead of quick-simming. Personally, I let the AI control baserunning and defensive strategy. I find that I lose concentration and miss some things when I do it myself.

I never play as just manager - too much of a control-freak I guess.

Awesome. That answers my question. Do you find that the team does better if you manage the games, or are the results about the same? Does the game prompt you GM functions that require your attention? What are some examples of those?

So you can control the base running during an actual play? I've got a lot to catch up on. I probably don't want that much control. Good info though, thank you.

Yes, the game will prompt you with emails or task reminders when your rosters don’t conform to the rules or there are players that need to go on the disabled list, etc. It will also remind you of upcoming deadlines such as Rule 5 draft and the need to protect players.

As far as AI managing vs. the human managing, it is hard to answer. The AI manages the other team in every game that I manage, and I don’t win them all. So it must be good enough to win for my team too when pitted against itself. I really just choose to delegate the things that I don’t want to do rather than what I think it does well.

Maybe it's all in my head, but I have a feeling that my players get less injury when I play my game than when I simulate the game...
