Westeros, anyone?
Does anyone have a name set and nation file for Westeros [from GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire] for OOTP14 that they would be willing to share?

You'll find a pretty extensive and accurate Westeros DB for cities & nations here: Others | OOTPMODS.COM
This was created 5 yrs. ago, though, so you'll have to insert the info into the world default file. I assume you know how to do this, but let me know if you have any problems with it. |

Thanks very much for this. I supposedly did a search for Westeros, but only found some logos with team names that I didn't want to use. Hopefully this will come in very handy. Many thanks again for the info

My pleasure
TBH, I haven't created an ASoIaF universe yet, but I'm currently working on a similar fictional world based on a book series I'm writing, and I think I've gotten a pretty good grasp at generating nations, states, cities, ethnicities, first & last names, etc. So again, let me know if you need help w/this (including logos, caps and jerseys, should you need them) and I'll be happy to lend you a hand whenever possible. |

I'm trying to create a dynasty set in modern-day Westeros. For team logos I am using house sigils lifted from the Wiki at Westeros: The 'A Song of Ice and Fire' Domain. For unis I am picking out the colours from the logos and using the "shoulder" styles which the game generates. I have fashioned a Nation file of sorts by editing Azerbijian in the World.dat file but I am aware that this is a bit makeshift. I have d/led the Westeros file you pointed me to but they are all .csv files and I haven't the faintest idea how to convert them and insert them into OOTP14, so any help on that score would be greatly appreciated.

Well, this can be rather cumbersome, but I'll try to explain the best way you could do it.
If you've already edited Azerbijian as Westeros, then I would replace the name of each State with the name of each of the 7 Kingdoms. To do this, open the nations.csv file, copy the name of each kingdom (i.e: Westernland, Vale, The North, etc.) and paste it into the STATE field in the world.dat file. For example: <STATE id="XXXX" name="XXXXX" pop="XXXXXX" lid="0" abbr="XXX"> Replace the name of state "XXXXX" with "Westernland", and the abbreviation with "WST", for instance (chances are the abbr=WES already exists, so I suggest this one just to be safe). Repeat this procedure within the CITIES field in the world.dat file, for every Westerosi keep/town that you wish to include in your world. First and last names can be easier. I suggest making a copy of the first_names.txt and names.txt files included in the game, so you can use the original files as backup. Once you've done this, open the first_names.csv and names.csv files you d/ld in Excel, copy and paste each name/surname into your copies of the first_names.txt and names.txt files. Just make sure to follow each name with its proper frequency and nameset (or ethnicity). Example: Aaron,1,1 Aash,1,1 Abelar,1,1 Addam,1,1 Adrian,1,1 Aegon,1,1 Etc… The original .csv files has replaced the "Hispanic" ethnicity with "Westerosi", so you probably want to keep it that way. Just make sure to have the Language ID pct. in line with your ethnicity(es). Again, this can be painful, given the number of names featured in the .csv file, but once you're done, you should be set and ready to get your Westeros League all set up. Needless to say, whatever you do, do NOT forget to backup every single original file from the game. Hopefully there may be someone who has an easier or quicker way to do this, but I hope this helps. At any rate, don't forget to let me know how this goes and if you need anything else. Perhaps you can share a QS of the game once you've got it all set up |

At first glance, that sounds doable, even for someone like me! I'll have a go and let you know how I get on - but it won't be in the next couple of days, as real life will be intervening! Thanks very much, Marberi, I really appreciate the help - especially coming from a Yankees fan

lol…let's just say I did this as a huge ASoIaF fan (even long before the HBO show came out), more than a Yankees fan
Good to see that you understood my explanation. I'm good at doing things myself, but not so good at transmitting them to others. Don't worry, sometimes it takes me a while to reply, precisely because real life gets in the way. So just take your time, keep in touch if/when you have any questions, and I'll be here to help whenever possible. |

Finally looking to make a start on this today and I'm quite hopeful that the steps will be fairly straightforward to follow. One issue strikes me at the start, however: do the population figures have to add up? i.e. does the figure you enter for the country have to equal exactly the total of all the cities you enter?

I've changed the database numerous times and never had a problem, I know for a fact that down the line I'll have made mistakes on the city populations and total populations so I'm thinking you shouldn't need to worry.

One thing I will add is, save before you change. What I usually do is have a folder in my docouments titled "original OOTP" and send any OOTP files to that before I start to change anything, I know some rename them in the OOTP folder but personally find it easier if the original and changed files are kept apart.

Pop. #'s are supposed to help the game's AI choose bigger cities when creating a league based on specific region(s), but after running some tests with a fictional universe of my own, I discovered that some smaller pop. centers are always chosen over bigger cities. Also, I wouldn't worry too much about lat/longitude and time zones. To my understanding, they help to establish game times and divisions (in region play), but they can be very painful to generate manually. Not worth the time and effort, IMO. |

Thanks Marberi. I'm failing miserably, I'm afraid, and I'm sure it's me being dense. I haven't bothered with lat & long, giving everything within the same state the same lat & long. Which programme would you use to edit the world.dat file?

I hear you, Tyke.
This is so complicated, that I can't get my fictional states right yet, for instance. So don't worry about it. I'm using a simple text sheet to edit the world.dat file. It's not as painful as it'd seem (I use lots of "copy/paste") and since I learned HTML design this way (ages ago lol), I'm used to it. A simple text sheet allows you to edit everything: the world.xml file, ethnicities, first names, last names, etc. All you have to do is replace the existing ones with your Westerosi set at the exact place (as I described to you above), with little difficulty. What is it that you're having trouble with specifically? Maybe I can point you in the right direction if I know the problem exactly… |

When you say you use "a simple text sheet" do you mean something like Notepad or Wordpad? [I'm afraid you're dealing with someone who works at a very basic level!!!]

No, sorry, it's my fault. I have a Mac and the language is different. I don't remember the name for the program for Windows, but I believe it's Notepad, yeah.
What program have you been using right to edit the world.xml file? |

I was using Notepad and spent most of today on it, but seem to have messed things up. when I tried to set up a new fictional league I got messages about errors, but not only in the parts of the file that I have amended. If I get time over the next couple of days I'll give it another go. [I do have original world.dat file saved, so in the meantime I've been able to reinstate that.] It's getting late over here now, so I won't be looking at it again until the morning. Thanks for your patience, Marberi, your efforts are much appreciated.

My pleasure, Tyke.
I also got lots of error messages and had to start over several times before I could get what I wanted, so it's natural. At any rate, have a good one and don't despair! You'll get there eventually, I'm sure. I'll keep hanging around to offer any help I can. Since I was able to edit my universe to my liking (somewhat lol), I'm happy to help and share w/e I can. |
