"What If" You Had a Time Machine?

This is a league idea that I ran on whatifsports.com once. I thought it would be cool to try on OOTP. Here is the idea:

Pick a franchise and select any team from that franchise's history that DID NOT make the playoffs (each team can only be represented once). Then, select TWO players from your team's history (a year that they actually played for your franchise) to add to that team (they also cannot be a player that is already on the team you picked).

The idea is to see who is the best GM by picking the most talented team that underachieved and then add the right necessary parts to get them over the top. I will post results and storylines in the Dynasty Reports section. There is a chance that this could extend beyond one season should the interest be there.

League Settings

Historical Year Settings: TBD
Financials: TBD
Trades: OFF
Injuries: Low
Suspensions: Low

Selections have closed. The sim will start shortly.

The details are yet to be ironed out. I know it only has space for two players and can only make up to 60 trips back in time

How far can you go back? and does it have to be Oakland Athletics all the way through or could you incorporate the Philadelphia Athletics?

Florida Marlins from 2009

1996 SP Kevin Brown
1996 RF Gary Sheffield (really hard going against Miguel Cabrera from 2006 - may regret this one)

Anytime from their history so yes the Philly A's would qualify

Somebody did something similar over on a Strat-o-Matic forum... they replayed the 2012 Pirates but added Pittsburgh Negro Leaguers Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige. IIRC, the Pirates did end up winning the Central.

There's lots of ways to go with this. I thought about doing a specific season and only the poorer teams could import players. May become a series I do...

1985 Yankees (97-64). No Mantle, Babe or Joe D. really needed to enhance this bunch (though they certainly wouldn't have hurt). They had a high octane offense powered by Henderson, Mattingly & Winfield, all of whom were in their prime. Their problem was pitching. Ron Guidry anchored the rotation with a 22-6 record, but after Phil Niekro (16-12) the drop in talent was severe (Cowley, Whitson, Rasmussen...blah). Righetti was a solid closer but tended to be streaky and spit the bit when you needed him most.

1999 Mariano Rivera (or any year between 1996-2011)
1958 Whitey Ford. Not his best year in terms of wins & losses, but definitely in WHIP & ERA.

2007 Atlanta Braves

1959 - RF Hank Aaron
1995 - SP Greg Maddux

SS - Edgar Rentaria
LF - Matt Diaz
3B - Chipper Jones
RF - Hank Aaron
1B - Mark Texiara
C - Brian McCann
2B - Kelly Johnson
CF - Andruw Jones

SP - Greg Maddux
SP - Tim Hudson
SP - John Smoltz
SP - Chuck James
SP - Buddy Carlyle

I debated adding Glavine over Aaron but I figured might as well have the HR King.

1993 SF Giants (103-59) best record not to make the playoffs (lost by one game to the Braves).
2008 Tim Lincecum
1962 Willie Mays

Ooooh someone needs to take the '94 Expos. Add Vlad and Strasburg.

Does that really count, though? Sure, they didn't make the playoffs, but only because no one did that year. They technically finished first in their division, so I wouldn't call it underachieving. The '93 or '96 Expos might be a better choice.
