Here are the first 35 out of 80 picks in the 1940 amateur draft, using my own draft values. This was my first go around. I've modified my process since for my new game's inaugural draft (which with 720 players takes a looong time, but I'm enjoying it). I'm using my own draft values because I've been told the draft values for AI don't work too well with Random Debut. They are more designed for use in straight historicals, so I decided rather than take the draft without draft values (which I saw Babe Ruth get picked 8th with), that I would take matters into my own hands.

The results are not bad. Guys who played a long time and were really good will tend towards the top of the draft, guys who played a long time and were really bad will tend towards the bottom of the draft. The cup of coffee guys tend to get stuck in the middle. Remember though, that sometimes the cup of coffee guys will get kissed by the player development fairy and turn into HoF type studs, or at least All-Star type players, so I think that in the end it works out OK. I had 5-year double weighted recalc on in this game, with player development also on:

The results are good really. Congratulations. Hard work, but you are reaping good results from it.

The inaugural draft is chock full of amazing shortstops: Honus Wagner, Alex Rodriguez, Vern Stephens, Joe Tinker, George Davis, Bobby Wallace. Wallace and Davis are past their prime, but the other four are looking good.
