The landscape of the game changed at the very start when Steve Carlton felt a twinge in his abdomen after surrendering a lead off hit to Mike Trout. He was pulled from the game for precautionary reasons and Alex Serrano was called upon to face the all RH Battle Cats.

Serrano provided 3 innings of shut out ball before turning the game over to Carl Hubbell.

Larry Doyle continued to be an important asset for the Sergeants as they looked to climb even with the Battle Cats in the standings. With Barry Bonds on first in the bottom of the second, Doyle ripped a single to right. Bonds made the turn at second and Eric Davis fired a perfect strike through the cut-off man to gun down Bonds and also keep Doyle at first.

Willie Mays followed with a two out double on which Doyle was able to score. 1-0 Sergeants.

In the 4th, Bonds got payback as he ripped a 2 run double and advanced to third on Doyle's deep fly ball. From there, a bouncing baall to the left of third was enough for Bonds to score and give the Sergeantsa huge (in 1919 baseball) 4 run lead.

The Battle Cats got two back in the top of the 7th, but Carl Hubbell helped his own cause as he singled and scored in the Sergeants' 2 run 7th, and finished the game for his second save in as many days with a 6-2 victory.

The Segeants have two games in hand as they lead the Battle Cats by pct points in the standings, but 6 of the final 9 meetings between the two clubs will be in Charlotte. Looks like an even call, at this point.

The teams will lock horns again on Aug 5th.

It's interesting to see the jockeying of pitchers in the rotation as they accumulate stats and scouting is reperformed.

Leader Boards entering Series 4

The item that leaps out from the leaderboards is the FIP leaders. All SIX are from the Cleveland Sergeants.

Randy Johnson suffered a partial tear of his elbow ligament. He is done for the season. No time for the Sergeants to worry. They simply added Walter Johnson from the reserve roster.

Benny Kauff suffered a setback in his recovery and will not rejoin the Battle Cats for another 4 weeks. Alex Rodriguez will miss this series, also. He is expected back in 3 weeks.

Series 4 Game 1 (12th Game overall)

Charlotte opens this series at home 1 game ahead of Cleveland.

Rico Petrocelli is out for a couple days. Jimmy Rollins gets the start at SS. Joe Rudi starts in LF, today.

For Cleveland, Willie Stargell gets the start at 1B and Stan Musial shifts back to RF.

The pitching match-up features two hot hurlers as Early Wynn faces Steve Carlton. This should be a good one....and exciting!....

Note: Since Petrocelli is not on the DL, his spot in the batting order, 4th, was left blank. I decided I would simply put Rollins in there, as he is the only player rated at SS not in the starting line-up. I thought it best to leave him in that spot instead of adding more of my own subjectivity by rearranging the order. If this happens again, for either team, I will follow the same protocol.

Early Wynn and Steve Carlton pitched to form as they both went the distance in Charlotte, today.

Wynn was having trouble locating his pitches in the 3rd when he hit lead-off hitter Willie Stargell, and then promptly plunked Gary Carter, who followed. Carter glared out at the mound...but c'mon, Kid, they're knuckleballs!

Steve Carlton executed the sacrifice and Eddie Collins lifted a fly to right which scored Stargell. 1-0 Sergeants.

With one out in the sixth, Larry Doyle reached on an error by Jackie Robinson and stole second. Mickey Mantle singled him home. 2-0 Sergeants.

Steve Carlton struck out 5 and walked none as he improved his season record to 6-0 while Early Wynn fell to 14-5.

Series 4 Game 2

THE pitching match-up everyone has wanted is here. Hal Newhouser and his 13.4 WAR takes on Josh Johnson and his 19-1 record.

Hank Aaron starts in RF for the Segeants as Stan Musial slides to first base.

The Battle Cats will send Jim Wynn and Manny Ramirez to the corner OF positions.

Ron Cey batting lead-off? What?!? Well, he hadn't been producing in the 6 spot, so why not?

After Josh Johnson had set down the Sergeants, in order, in the first inning, Cey led off the Battle Cat's half of the first with a single to LF. Good move Juan Gon!

Jackie Robinson followed with a single of his own. When Hal Newhouser uncorked a wild pitch before striking out Mike Trout, it provided subbing SS Jimmy Rollins an opportunity to bat with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out.

Rollins forced Hank Aaron back, but did not turn him around. Cey tagged from third, Aaron threw to the plate. The Penguin beat the throw....just like a good lead-off hitter should.

In the bottom of the 6th, Rollins reached on a FC with 2 outs. He swiped second base and trotted home on Miguel Cabrera's RBI Double.

Josh Johnson had the shutout in tact as he took the mound for the top of the 9th. Hank Aaron led the inning off with a single, bringing the tying run to the plate.

Mickey Mantle grounded one to the right of Cabrera and was thrown out 3-1, Aaron to second.

Kevin Mitchell strode to the plate and drew a base on balls to have the go ahead run, in the person of Stan Musial.

Stan was the Man as he took one for the team, loading the bases with one out.

The next hitter was.....Bonds......Barry Bonds.

This stirred the Charlotte faithful, but they were quickly shaken when he connected on the Johnson offering. Driven to straight Centerfield, Mike Trout turned and gave chase. With his back to the play, Trout reached out and....MADE the play. Aaron ambled home.

Kevin Mitchell had to hustle back to second when the thirdbase coach shouted that the ball had been caught. A huge bonehead play by Mitchell which cost him a base.

Larry Doyle had a tough day in the field, picking up 2 more errors, but now he could atone for the miscues with a big hit. On a 2-2 pitch he dribbled one to Jackie Robinson. The wrong guy on the field to hit one to. 4-3 went the put out and 2-1 was ball game.

The Battle Cats retake the lead in the pennant race and look towards tomorrow for a chance to even the season series at 7.

Series 4 Game 3

The series wraps up today with an important rubber game.

If the Sergeants win they will take a pct point lead in the standings. If the Battle Cats win the will take a 2 game lead.

Toad Ramsey makes this important start for Cleveland. Lou Galvin takes the hill for Charlotte.

Galvin has had a nice season, but he is always the underdog when facing the Sergeants. He has yet to down them and Ramsey has owned the Battle Cats.

Another must win for Cleveland.

Chipper Jones takes 3B duties for the visiting Sergeants. Meanwhile, Rico Petrocelli returns to play SS for the Battle Cats. Tommie Agee also gets a start for Charlotte.

Larry Doyle continued to be the center of the Sergeant's offense. In the second inning he singled, stole second, and scored on a Chipper Jones base hit giving Toad Ramsey an early lead.

In the third inning, Toad Ramsey got him self a hit to lead things off for the Sergeants. Not a good sign for Lou Galvin. By the time the inning was over the Battle Cats were through. The Sergeants scored 3 times and won the game 4-1, with Ramsey being absolutely dominant, again, against Charlotte.

The two teams will face each other in 10 days, in Cleveland.

The Battle Cats drew first blood as Rico Petrocelli laced a 2 out double in the top of the first to score Jackie Robinson.

The Sergeants evened things up in the bottom of the third when Mickey Mantle;s sac fly scored Gary Carter.

The Battle Cats retook the lead in the top half of the 6th. With two outs and no one one, Miguel Cabrera bounced a single just out of the reach of Eddie Collins. Ron Cey stepped up and jolted a triple, one of three hits on the day for the Penguin, to bring home Miggy.

Lou Galvin struggled with his control, walking 7, but he gave up just the one run in the CG effort as he hands Hal Newhouser another hard luck loss.

Charlotte holds a one game lead over Cleveland.

Series 5 Game 2

Again, the Sergeants have the advantage on paper, but the game is played on the field.

King Carl Hubbell will square off against Percy Coleman. Should the Battle Cats pull out two wins in as many days from the underdog spot, this would be a huge blow to the Sergeants.

Jim Wynn gets the start in CF as Mike Trout will be patrolling LF, again. Smoky Burgess gives John Romano a day off behind the plate, for the Battle Cats.

Percy Coleman was the hitting star for the Battle Cats as he went 3 fof 3. Unfortunately, for Coleman and Charlotte, Cleveland had an even bigger day at the plate.

The teams traded tallies in the first. The pitchers posted zeros through 6, then crooked numbers became the norm.

Barry Bonds laced a 2 run double as part of a 4 run sixth for the Sergeants. Bonds drove in another in the 8th as Cleveland posted 2 more.

Jackie Robinson hit a bases clearing bases loaded double in the 9th, but the damage had been done and Cleveland came out on to 7-4.
