Today is an off day for the team and it is time for us to reassess our roster.

SP Josh Spence (24-L), SP Matt Austin (27-R), C Will Mullen (27-L), 1B George Rauch (27-S) and SS Dan Thomas (27-R) and were all optioned to Daytona Beach (A).

SP Travis Barger (28-R) and 3B Sam Dickson (31-R) are out of options, so they were both waived and designated for assignment.

RF Mike Garrett (34-L) refused to be demoted so we decided to give him some more time to work things out because of his upstanding character and because he hit decently last season.

SP Cody Jacobus (29-L), SP Joe Abram (26-R), SP Leon Hermosillo (25-L), 3B Jamie Stelter (27-L), SS Ryan Farmer (25-R), CF Jamie Payne and RF Juan Lepe (30-L) were all called up from Daytona Beach.

SP Sam Rea (28-R) and SP Steve Bird (29-R) were waived and designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster.

P Sam Rea (28-R), who we removed from our 40 man roster, has been claimed off waivers by Orlando and installed as their #2 starter. Hope we did not screw up letting him go... We signed a minor league contract with Pat Ferebee (32-R) to take his place. Ferebee used to be a superstar before injuries brought him down.

SP Travis Barger (28-R), SP Steve Bird (30-R) and 3B Sam Dickson (31-R) all cleared waivers and were assigned to Daytona Beach (A).

Hartford Whalers (22-7 .759 3 GA in 1st place in the Northern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (11-18 .379 8 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division)

HART: Matt Dungan (29-R 1-1 8.04 ERA 15.2 IP, 21 H, 1 HR, 11 BB, 6 SO) vs.
JAX: Joe Abram (26-R 2-1 1.16 ERA 31 IP, 20 H, 1 HR, 6 BB, 23 SO in A Ball)

Dungan gave up 4 runs in 5.2 IP last time out in a loss.

Abram, who we signed as a minor league free agent in March, is making his Major League debut. He is a soft tosser (88 MPH), who throws a slider and circle change and pitches up in the zone, which does not seem a good combination, but it was working for him so far in Daytona Beach.

We are in Providence to play the Steamrollers a 4 game series. They lost 3 of 4 in Birmingham over the weekend. They are 11th in scoring with 3.48 runs per game (Jacksonville is #13 with 3.39). We are now last in the League in both HR (12) and walks (78). Earl Weaver would be proud. The Steamrollers are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.35 per game (Jacksonville is #9 with 3.90). Their run differential is -27 and ours is -16.

Jacksonville Jays (12-19 .387 7 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at

Hermosillo is making his Major League debut today. We got him in a trade with Charlotte in February. He is a hard thrower (98 MPH) who keeps the ball down and throws a cutter, curve and changeup.

Kauffman has lost every one of his 5 starts so far, but the Steamrollers have only scored him 8 total runs. He gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in 2.2 IP last time out.

RF Mike Garrett (34-L), who is batting .155 with a .393 OPS refuses to go to Daytona Beach (A), so we made a trade.

Trade #13
RF Mike Garret to Providence for SP Eddie Basset (30-R).

Basset is 6-1 with a 2.24 ERA in A Ball for the Portland (ME) Sea Dogs. He is a proven Major League pitcher, though. He pitches to contact, but has good control and keeps the ball in the ball park relatively well. He is making $418,000, which makes him the highest paid pitcher we have on our team. He will go to Daytona Beach, but will be the next candidate for a spot on our rotation if we get tired of someone in it now or we have an injury. In all likelihood, he is probably the best starter we have on the roster now other than Walt Urbanski, though ol' Walt has had a rough stretch of games of late.

RF Kurt Reuter (25-L) was called up from Daytona Beach to take Garrett's spot on the roster. He was signed as a minor league free agent in February. RP Ryan Schroeder (28-R) was waived and designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster.

Louisville Colonels (16-22 .421 4.5 GB in 7th place in the Southern Division) at
Jacksonville Jays (17-22 .436 4 GB tied for 5th place in the Southern Division)

LOU: Chris Tyler (31-R 1-4 5.13 ERA 52.2 IP, 55 H, 4 HR, 24 BB, 19 SO) vs.
JAX: Joe Abram (26-R 0-1 2.45 ERA 14.2 IP, 15 H, 0 HR, 4 BB, 7 SO)

Tyler gave up 5 runs in 4.2 IP last time out, but escaped with a no decision. His one win was against us back in April. He held us to 2 runs (1 earned) in 8 IP.

Abram gave up 2 runs on 5 hits in 7 IP last time out, but we were shut out and he took a loss.

SP Jimmy Kilman (29-R) was waived and designated for assignment to make room on the 40 man roster. RP Ryan Schroeder (28-R), who was waived earlier from the 40 man roster, cleared waivers and was assigned to Daytona Beach.
