newbie on 3D parks - question about exporting from Sketchup

Hi guys,

I've been reading up on what to do in regards to importing and exporting the 3D models into OOTP. I DL'd a version of Fenway that silvam14 had done (from 1976 I believe) that contained the Sketchup file of the park. To test, I took his Sketchup file and loaded it into Sketchup, then immediately exported it into an OBJ file. I made no chages. I then loaded the OBJ into OOTP and the 3D model was all black, as I have seen happen in threads I have researched. My question is: if I made no changes, why did it come out as black? The OBJ supplied by silvam14 works flawlessly, of course. Just trying to understand how these files work with eachother. Thanks!

It matters where you are exporting to everything must be under the models directory

I can confirm that I placed all the export files from Sketchup into a "Fenway 1976" folder that was contained in the "models" folder.

When you say the stadium is black, do you mean the entire stadium? Or just the sections where the crowd is?

The entire thing is black. I've attached a screenshot to this reply.

Never seen that before? Can you move the camera around? possible it is just stuck behind a texture?

If you can post what the folder contents look like in your models directory, that could help too

Well I just tried something else, which was importing all the camera angles in from another park. When I used the batter's box camera, I can see a portion of the sky, but the entire park is black, as you can see.

My canned answer to this question:

That usually means you have the folder structure incorrect. Using "Flagg Park" as an example, you should have the following structure (there may be a few other files in there, but these are the ones that matter for the 3d park):

Code:
ballparks
	models
		Flagg_park
			Flagg Park_Textures
			Flagg Park.mtl
			Flagg Park.obj
The .obj and .mtl files work hand-in-hand. The .obj file describes the actual 3D structure, and the .mtl file provides information about the textures. The textures have to be in the right location relative to the .mtl file. All of your texture files (the .jpg and .png files) should be in that "Flagg Park_Textures" folder.

Yep, that is the exact structure that I have set up.

Here’s a thought. Are you using the exporter that comes with sketch up? I use the free plugin that is functioning past the trial.

Anyway. With the exporter that comes with sketch up, there might be an option set where it only exports one side of a face. I don’t have it open now to check. Only other reason I can think of that every surface is black

Yeah, I've never seen that happen either, and eriqjaffe's trick usually does the work for me. I would test Silvam's idea and try using the .OBJ exporter plugin. eriqjaffe shared the link for the plugin here and here is an overview of how to install plugins.

Sketchup 2020 has OBJ exporting baked in, but I installed the plugin as well and tried it that way. Same exact thing happened. The entire stadium is black, except for the background sky.

The Sketchup baked in version does have an option for 2-sided faces, and I have had it checked the entire time.

One more question: when I used the plugin, it did NOT produce an .mtl file. Since I made no changes, I used the file from the original stadium, and then the park loaded correctly.

OK I think I have a solution: export with the baked in OBJ option to get teh MTL file, and then use the plugin to get everything else.

Thank you guys for talking me through this!

Spoke too soon. That's not working now either. Stadium still in all black.

One last thing: trying that workaround with silvam's park files does not work. Trying it with a random Fenway Park file from the warehouse works fine. So I dunno.

You install the plugin. Use the objexporter option under file menu (not file —> export)

Shouldn’t be anything left to do.

I’m pretty sure I have a video on this on YouTube

Yep that's what I did. Doesn't work for your park; works for that Fenway model from the Warehouse.

Are the textures that show up black in .BMP format in the textures folder? Because those are known to not work in OOTP21.
