Two dark horses win the MVP awards this year. Gunnell was a 1st round draft pick in 1904 out of Pepperdine and took the league by storm, winning both the MVP and Rookie of the Year. Kramer has been in the league since its inception and was the starting shortstop on the 1900 champion Twins. He has always had exemplary fielding but added a bit of offense this year to push him over the top.

These two were a little less dominant this year. Cabedo dealt with elbow tendinitis and just barely squeaked past Shemar Myrie for the top AL pitching spot. Avila had a stronger hold on Pitcher of the Year but a few of the top hitters caught up to him for overall MVP.

There are quite a few interesting stories in free agency this year, beginning with former #1 prospect Yago Pimentel. He has had massive injury issues throughout his career, having only pitched 79 games in the majors over the past 4 years. When pitching, he has been dominant, amassing 14 WAR in those 79 games. He is a very high risk, very high reward player.

Nate Clements has also found his way back on the free agency market. He used the player option in his contract and rejected the Marlins qualifying offer. He is the current MLB career leader in home runs with a whopping 66. In another time, another era, he may have 100 times that amount.

Deshawn Wetherspoon is the eternal free agent. He has been drafted thrice - first by the Rockies, then by the Orioles, and finally the Twins - and failed to sign every time. Perhaps he will find what he is looking for in free agency. Oddly enough, his personality ratings do not include high greed, but he does have low intelligence.

Here are the top 20 unsigned high school draftees this year. Both Clemson and Ohio State were hurting for players so they got quite a few prospects.

5 years into the league I'm starting a feature to look 5 years in the past and see where some of the interesting players have gone. The first couple might be a little more difficult due to all the name changes in this first generation of players.

Top Prospects:
Yago Pimentel (Apsuhomya Prusko) - I covered him a little bit in the free agency post, but he has had the stereotypical top-pitching-prospect-turned-injured career. He is still listed as having 80 potential, but his injury list is so long it has a scroll bar on my computer. The biggest ones:

Shoulder inflammation, 8 weeks; Torn UCL, 13 months; Sore shoulder, 3 weeks; Back spasms, 2 weeks; Sprained elbow, 2 weeks; Back tightness, 2 weeks; Recurring back spasms, 6 weeks; Shoulder inflammation, 6 months; Shoulder tendinitis, 8 weeks; Oblique strain, 4 weeks; Mild shoulder strain, 3 weeks; Mild shoulder strain, 2 weeks; Ulnar nerve entrapment, 2 months.

Every time I get an email about his next injury I expect it to be a career ender. He is only 25 years old but has the body of a 90 year old.

Manny Orduno (Hai-Liang Suhara) - The overall top hitting prospect in 1900 is also a free agent this offseason and he has had only one serious injury which caused him to miss 14 weeks. He has made two all-star teams and won 3 silver slugger awards.

Award Winners:
Chris O'Brien - After winning the AL MVP and Rookie of the Year, he was not able to keep growing his success. He has had a couple injuries that have hampered his career but is still performing well, just not at the MVP level. He is currently a free agent.

Tim O'Neill - The 1900 NL MVP dropped even further off the map. He had nearly half the production in 1901 and continued to drop until finally this year which he spent playing for the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the Atlantic League. He recently signed a contract with the Long Island Ducks for 1906.

Dana Clavez - The AL Rookie of the Year has had a solid MLB career and is one of the league's best base stealers.

Zaire Isabell - Pitched the first no-hitter in MLB history. He is still pitching with the Dodgers and having a solid career.

No players are Hall of Fame caliber yet, but the league has its first eligible player, due to the pseudo service times created at league inception. Sergio Granados is the first player on the ballot - 6 years, 136 G, 188 BB, 355 K, 2.75 FIP, 89 FIP-, 20.1 WAR. A pretty solid career but just came along too late.

Pimentel went to the White Sox on a 1-year contract, hoping he can stay healthy and get a better deal next year. Clements signed another long-term contract, this time without an option to leave early. The Brewers signed another top pitcher but gave him a player option after the first year, just as they did with Steve Gardiner previously.
