Lame resigning excuses for online leagues...
EDIT: ATT Mods, please move to online leagues forum!
--- Lately I have been looking at other online leagues to get some inspiration for my own league. One of the first things I look at are the owners of that league. Funny enough I saw lots of familiar names of owners that are, or were, part of my league. For the former owners, I was surprised to see some of the owners that (1) just stopped being active, and (2) resigned because of reasons that suddenly are not applying anymore. Here is my favorite: "I am on dialup and the league file is too large" (we offer .dat only league file btw) This guy joined other leagues after he resigned, so he must "suddenly" have broadband access again. I am happy for him! In general, I have no problems with owners resigning. 90% of them I write a thank you note, and let them know they are always welcome again. This is well appreciated, as we have had a couple of owners returning after a break. However, I am pretty sure some of the owners that resign are doing so because they are (1) not happy about the type of league (should be interpreted very broadly), or (2) cannot have short term success and leave. Either way, these owners give some sort of lame excuse, whereby they could greatly help by stating their real reasons. I had one owner resigning, and he gave me a very detailed briefing what his concerns were. By doing that, he gave me valuable feedback and I was able to act on it. The result was that he stayed and the league improved! I would be interested in the opinions of others on this issue!

I think the most popular "excuse" is just not enough time, but I imagine the most popular "reason" is just people would rather spend their time doing something else, which is perfectly understandable. Tastes change over time. Whatever the reason or excuse it doesn't bother me.
What's far more important however is, like you said, getting honest feedback about why they quit. Also like you said, you'll often see those who leave join other leagues and you wonder what it is about that league that they prefer over yours. Now if it's something like just the type of league is modern rather than fictional well you can just accept that and move on because you're probably not going to change something like that. But if it's something like say the new league's forum is more active than the other then that's very valuable to know as it points you in a direction. Now there might not be an easy fix, but at least you know what to fix. If anyone is going to quit a league, do the commish a favour and just add a couple points of how you think they might best be able to improve the league. They might not take it well at first, but if they really want their league to be as successful as possible they'll probably give it serious consideration in time. |

One excuse is good as another the way I figure it. If they don't want to be in, then it opens the way for a potentially more active owner to be in. I'd rather have them quit than just go through the motions in a disinterested manner.

Far worse than any of these, I think, is when they just fade away and dissapear. Even the lamest excuse is better than that, because at least you know they're done and can get someone else to run the team.

I agree, I would much rather get an e-mail saying that "I'm leaving cause I don't like ______" than a lie or worse just falling off the face of the earth.

The few people who have quit the USBA over the years, with maybe one exception, have faded completely from the OOTP community so their reason of "don't have enough/any time" seems like a valid one.
However, I have seen a number of people in other leagues I am involved in as a team owner leave due to time restriction or "real life" issues, only to pop up in other online leagues soon after they quit. That always puzzled me. Lucky turnover in the USBA is extremely low. When looking for replacement owners, I always eliminate the "league hoppers" from consideration.

Recently a member left a league I am a part of, his reason was that there was not enough interaction between owners. The league has 10-15 people online all the time, and I have never once seen this particular owner on aim at all since he joined. These are reasons that I will never understand.

I agree with Tredom, I would take any lame excuse. Anyone who at least has the decency to let me know they want to leave, is far better than someone who quits and never tells you.
I thank anyone that lets me know they are leaving, even if it is a lame excuse. At least then I can move on. I cant stand people that just stop being active and don't let me know.

not enough time after just joining the league is a HUGE one, but i actually had one tell me they couldnt remain in the league because his cat broke his league and needed surgery and i also had a guy tell me that he didnt want to remain in the league because "my wife got custody of the game in our divorce so i cant remain in the league"..........i actually HAD to post that on my main site for some time

just tell me that you are leaving is all i ask. Yeah it would be nice for an honest reason but really all that matters is to let the commish know.
