Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 74 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 7 MPH wind blowing out to left.
Attendance: 27,243

Top of the First:

Dan Fortino grounds out to 3rd. Ron Chestnut strikes out looking. Gary Halbert grounds out to 3rd! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet flies out to left. Dennis Webb strikes out looking... Bob Draper lines an 0-2 pitch to left for a hit. He gets caught stealing....

Bottom of the Second:

With 1 out, Tony Casarez yanks a home run down the right field line! 1 to 0, Beavers!

Bottom of the Third:
Dave Lesley leads off with a double to left. P Bob Grigg lays down a bunt and they fire to 3rd to get Lesley, but he is safe! Paul Bouvet flies out to shallow left and Lesley has to hold... Dennis Webb grounds into a 4-6-3 double play...

Top of the Fourth:
P Bob Grigg retired the first 11 batters of the game, but with 2 outs, Gary Halbert hits a home run to left and just like that, the game is tied... Does not seem very fair... 1 to 1.

Top of the Sixth:
Chip Carpenter leads off with a double to left, their second base runner of the day and the last that P Bob Grigg will allow, because he calls Pepe out and has to leave the game... New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). P Brad Simpson strikes out bunting one foul with 2 strikes! We walk Dan Fortino intentionally... Ron Chestnut squibs one in front of the plate and we get a force at 2nd, 2-6. Carpenter goes to 3rd. Gary Halbert flies out to center!

Top of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (30-L), our new #1 reliever. Sandy Mojica leads off with a home run to left.... 2 to 1, Seals. Hertzberg is now our old #1 reliever...

Bottom of the Ninth:

P Brad Simpson still on the hill. He have had 4 hits off him and he has sat down 10 in a row... We send up PH Dave Benya (27-S) and they counter by bringing in their closer, Jesse Adcock (29-L). 2.98 ERA with 26 SV. He has 2 saves and a win and a loss against us this year with a 1.93 ERA. We pull down Benya and send up Woody Griesbach (24-R). He works the count full and then pops one foul on the left side, but 3B Chris Greenwald drops the ball for an error. Given a second chance, Griesbach launches one deep to left, but it is caught on the warning track... Paul Bouvet lines a hit to left. PH Rollie Ferree (28-R) grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. I guess we cannot expect him to get a hit EVERY time... PH Eddie Thomas (26-R) flies out to center....

Lost - 2 to 1

San Francisco had 7 hits and made 1 error

Bob Grigg went 5+ innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 4.

Random Fact of Week:
Who's the best player in Baseball? Baseball America says it is 3B Rafael Montes (31-L) of Pittsburgh and it is hard to argue against their claim. He won a Gold Glove last year and is hitting .346 with 19 HR and 74 RBI and 72 R and a .991 OPS this season. The only knock against him is that he cannot outrun my pet three-legged box turtle. But he almost can and he can steal a base every once in a while. He was 9-0 last year and is 2-2 this year. The second best player, according to BA, is our own 2B Paul Bouvet! Though, truth be told, he was #1 one not too long ago....

Frank Martin (27-R) says he is ready to go, so we activated him from the Disabled List and sent P Larry Smith (27-R) back to Vancouver (AAA).

The Seattle Rainiers are in town to play a 4 game series. They lost 2 of 3 in Los Angeles over the weekend. We are 8-2 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the last time they were in the Skydome, June 21-24, outscoring them 20 to 5. They are 7th in scoring with 4.01 runs per game (Portland is 4th with 4.30). They lead the Majors with 113 HR, but are also last in the PCL in SB with 69. They are 12th (last) in fewest runs allowed with 4.96 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.33). They have allowed the 2nd most HR (104) and the have the worst BA allowed (.268).

Seattle Rainiers (38-73 .342 30.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (69-43 .616 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SEA: Dennis Simoneaux (29-R 8-13 3.66) vs. POR: Frank Martin (27-R 8-4 3.22)

Simoneaux is their #1 starter. He is 0-2 against us this year, but pitched well both times. In 13 IP, he gave us 5 runs (3.46 ERA).

Martin has not pitched since June 21, so we expect some rust.

Top of the First:

Randy Hobson triples to left center... Paul Blaine pops out to shallow left, 2B Paul Bouvet making the catch. Jim Rier grounds out to the pitcher and Hobson has to hold... This is where the Baseball gods are teasing me into thinking we can get out of the inning without a run scoring, but they are not going to fool me... Mark Fenik flies out to left!!! They fooled me!

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet swings at a 3-1 pitch out of the strike zone and pops out to 2nd... Dave Benya grounds out to 2nd. Woody Griesbach grounds a hit past the shortstop. That's the place to hit 'em; Paul Blaine is no Major League shortstop... On the first pitch to Tony Casarez, Griesbach steals 2nd. He goes to 3rd on a wild pitch. Casarez flies out to deep left.

Bottom of the Fourth:

With 2 outs, Bob Draper draws a walk form a full count and then steals 2nd. Larry Sinchak also takes a 3-2 pitch for a walk. Jeff Schottler lines a hit to right and Draper beats the throw to the plate! 1 to 0, Beavers! Dave Lesley grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Fifth:
P Frank Martin leads off with a double off the right center field wall! His first hit of the season! But the top of our order goes down 1-2-3....

Top of the Sixth:
With 1 out, Randy Hobson triples to left center again... The Pen is up. With the infield in, Paul Blaine grounds a hit past SS Dave Lesley and Hobson scores to tie the game at 1 apiece... With 2 outs, Blaine tries to steal but we have a pitchout on and he is out! C Dave Benya is one some kind of a roll at throwing out runners!

Top of the Seventh:
Mark Fenik leads off with a home run to left... 2 to 1, Seattle. We get the Pen up. But the next three make outs.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Dave Perez (24-L). Ken Murray leads off with a hit to right. PH Pedro de Jesus (26-L) grounds a hit to right and Murray beats the throw to 3rd. Randy Hobson lines out to deep right and Murray scores. 3 to 1, Seattle.

Lost - 3 to 1

We had 5 hits and made no errors
Seattle had 7 hits and made no errors

I was expecting to lose this game, but because Frank Martin got roughed up, not because our offense stunk....

Frank Martin (L 8-5) went 7 innings, allowed 2 run, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 2. At bat, he hit a double, our only extra base hit of the day.
LHP Dave Perez went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits and struck out 2.

Dennis Simoneaux went 5.1 innings, gave us 1 run, 5 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP.
RHP Danny Gilmore (W 1-0), claimed off waivers from San Diego a week ago, went 1.2 scoreless innings and gave us 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.
Danny Karpowicz (SV 17) pitched a perfect 9th and struck out 2.

Nobody did much of nothin' for us...

Down on the Farm:
In his first start back in Vancouver (AAA), Larry Smith (27-R) pitched a 4 hit shutout at Phoenix. He walked 1 and struck out 3. He is now 8-0 with a 2.96 ERA for the Mounties. He was 2 for 4 at the plate and scored a run.

We are in Oakland to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just lost 3 of 4 here to San Francisco and are 5-15 over their last 20 games. We are 8-1 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the last time we were in the Coliseum, April 30-May 2. The Oaks are 12th (last) in the PCL in scoring with 3.29 runs per game (Portland is down to 5th with 4.26). They are last in all of Baseball with a .227 BA and are last in the PCL with 62 HR. We are hitting .261 and have 93 HR. They are 7th in fewest runs allowed with 4.10 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.28). Their pitchers are tied for the most walks (403) and have the 3rd fewest strikeouts (603). We have walked the fewest (263) and have struck out 642 (8th).

Portland Beavers (71-45 .612 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Oakland Oaks (46-70 .397 25 GB in 5th place in the PCL West)

POR: John Alecci (26-R 0-1 1.29) Rookie vs. OAK: Bob Stark (27-R 4-2 2.61)

It is Bob Grigg's turn to pitch, but he is still bothered by a sore wrist. Alecci has only has 1 start this season and only gave up 2 hits and 1 run in 7 innings at San Francisco, but still ended up with a loss. That was almost two weeks ago, so I hope he is not too rusty.

Stark had almost as bad luck as Alecci in his last start. He gave up only 3 hits and 2 runs (1 earned) and took a loss. We have never faced him.

With 1 out, Norm Wynne homers to straight away center... 3 to 2, Beavers.

Norm Wynne takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4... 2 walks in the inning for a guy that averages less than 2 per 9 innings... PH Dick Hoagland (32-L), batting .265 with 11 HR in 294 AB with a .785 OPS is sent up. New Pitcher: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Hoagland strikes out! Stan Baker flies out to center!

Top of the Ninth:

Don Stokes leads off with a walk... Call to the Bullpen: Lou Hertzberg (30-L). Bob Waln swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out! 3B Larry Shayne (36-R), who is 1 for 12 (.083) with a triple on the year, grounds one to short, but Eddie Thomas boots it.... Henry Rangel flies out to left. 2 outs. A passed ball sends the runners up... Avery Shular takes a 3-2 pitch for strike three and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!

Monday, August 12, Year II

We are back home for a 3 game series with Dallas before heading back out on the road for the weekend. The Eagles split 4 games in Denver over the weekend. We are 4-2 against them on the season and swept them in 3 games the last time they were in Portland, May 10-12. They are 4th in scoring in the PCL with 4.31 runs per game (Portland is 5th with 4.22). They are 4th in the PCL scoring and 4th in the PCL East Division. They are 2nd to last in HR (71). They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.68 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.23).

Dallas Eagles (66-52 .559 in 1st place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (73-46 .613 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Ralph Hoskins (26-R 4-10 3.91) vs. POR: Brian Hagans (26-R 3-2 2.95) Rookie

Hoskins has not won a game since May 5, going 0-8 in his last 17 starts. He has had 7 no decisions in his last 8 outings. He is 0-1 in 2 starts against us, but only gave us 5 runs (4 earned) in 15 innings (2.40 ERA).

Hagans pitched a shutout in his last start and set the Beaver record with 11 K's.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 73 F, Partly Cloudy, with an 8 MPH wind blowing left to right.
Attendance: 21,953

Top of the First:
Fran Haer draws a walk... Bob Holder strikes out on 3 pitches! Haer tries to steal and C Dave Benya throws him out! Benya is now up to 50% in throwing out runners! 30 for 60! Edwin Juan swings at a 3-2 pitch and strikes out!

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet flies out to right. Dave Benya lines out to 1st... They are up to their new tricks in making outs... Bob Draper lines a hit to left. He steals 2nd. Jeff Austin grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Second:

With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Dave Lesley lines a hit to right. P Brian Hagans doubles to right and both runners score! Hagans goes to 3rd on the throw, but they cut it off and try to nail him, but he is safe! 2 to 0, Beavers! Paul Bouvet grounds out to the pitcher....

Top of the Fourth:
Bob Holder leads off by reaching base when SS Dave Lesley boots his ground ball. Edwin Juan then grounds another to short and ends up with an infield hit, the first hit of the game for the Eagles. Steve DeMuro grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and Holder goes to 3rd. Qian Duan strikes out! Hank Anderson flies out to left!

Bottom of the Sixth:

Bob Draper and Jeff Austin lead us off with a pair of singles. Tony Casarez grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and Draper goes to 3rd. Larry Sinchak doubles down the left field line and Draper scores! 3 to 0, Beavers! They walk Jeff Schottler intentionally to get to Dave Lesley, who grounded into a double play his last time up. They walk Lesley on 4 pitches to force in a run!! 4 to 0, Beavers! P Brian Hagans grounds into a force at home, 1-2, but beats the throw to 1st to keep the inning alive for Paul Bouvet, who is 0 for 3 today. He hits a lazy fly ball to center...

Top of the Seventh:

With 2 outs, Hank Anderson singles and then Steve Thwing triples to left center.... 4 to 1, Beavers. The Bullpen is up. Joe Aloe grounds a hit to center and Thwing scores. 4 to 2, Beavers. PH Chris Hagerty (25-L) doubles to right and Aloe scores... 4 to 3, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Fran Haer swings at the first pitch and grounds out to the pitcher!

Top of the Eighth:

The Bullpen is ready. Woody Griesbach (24-R), who pinch-hit last inning stays in to play right. With 1 out, Edwin Juan lines a hit to right. Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L). Steve DeMuro grounds a hit to right and Juan makes it to 3rd. Qian Duan bloops a hit to center and Juan scores to tie the game at 4 all... DeMuro tries for 3rd, but CF Jeff Schottler throws him out! Hank Anderson strikes out!

Bottom of the Eight:
We get runners on 1st and 2nd with two outs, but Paul Bouvet flies out to center....

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R). With 2 outs, PH Dan Kaczmarek (29-R), their normal starting catcher, who has been hampered with a muscle pull, lines a hit to left. Fran Haer lines out to 1st!

Bottom of the Ninth:

New Pitcher: Steve Patterson (30-L) with a 3.05 ERA in 65 IP. Dave Benya bloops a hit into right! Woody Griesbach grounds into a 6-4-3 double play.... Jeff Austin lines out to center.

Extras!

Top of the Tenth:
With 1 out, Edwin Juan doubles to right center... We walk Steve DeMuro intentionally. Seems reasonable. But a wild pitch moves the runners up.... Qian Duan strikes out! Hank Anderson grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Tenth:
New Pitcher: Bob Hagan (30-R) with a 4.18 ERA and 8 saves. He is their current closer, because Jose Uria (26-R), their old closer, was sent to AAA to try to become a starting pitcher. He had 35 saves for them last year and had 15 in the first half this year with a 2.15 ERA. He has the stuff to be a starter, but not the stamina. We go down in order...

Top of the Eleventh:

PH Dick Gottesman (32-L) grounds a hit to left. Joe Aloe takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. We get the Pen up, but the only fresh arm left is rookie Dave Perez and he has not been stellar thus far... 2B Gill Blair (29-), a .221 hitter, grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6, and Gottesman goes to 3rd. A passed ball and Gottesman scores... 5 to 4, Eagles. We walk Frank Haer intentionally.... Bob Holder strikes out. They let P Bob Hagan bat and he grounds a hit to left and Blair scores... 6 to 4, Eagles. Call to the Pen: Dave Perez (24-L). Steve DeMuro flies out to center.

Bottom of the Eleventh:

PH Dennis Webb (26-L) strikes out looking... PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) lines out to left. Paul Bouvet hits a home run to left... 6 to 5, Eagles. That's great, but too little, too late... Why did he not do that earlier and we could have won the game? Dave Benya hits a home run to right center to tie the game!!!!! 6 to 6. Woody Griesbach draws a walk. P Bob Hagan is not tired. Griesbach steals 2nd. Jeff Austin lines out to the pitcher.

Top of the Twelfth:

Well, now I have nobody to pitch.... P Bob Grigg (24-R), a starter is the only fresh arm, so in he goes. We have an off day doming up on Thursday, so we should be fine in the rotation. Eddie Thomas is in to play short. Qian Duan walks... Grigg picks him off at 1st! The next two ground out!

Bottom of the Twelfth:
We go down in order....

Top of the Thirteenth:
Joe Aloe leads off with a double down the left field line... Gill Blair flies out to left and Aloe tags up and gets himself thrown out at 3rd by Tony Casarez! Fran Haer swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Thirteenth:
We go down 1-2-3...

Top of the Fourteenth:
With 2 outs, Steve DeMuro draws a walk, but Qian Duan grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the Fourteenth:

P Bob Hagan is starting to look a little winded as he begins his 5th inning of work, but he is by no means gassed yet. We go down in order again... That is 10 in a row retired by Hagan since he gave up a walk to Woody Griesbach after the back-to-back home runs...

Top of the Fifteenth:
They go down in order with 3 ground outs to 2nd!

Bottom of the Fifteenth:

Tony Casarez leads off with a walk. Larry Sinchak strikes out... Jeff Schottler grounds into a 6-4-3 double play and I have hurt myself again....

Top of the Sixteenth:
Gill Blair leads off with a little pop fly to center that falls for a hit... Fran Haer grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Bob Holder strikes out! That is the fifth time he has today! He is 1 for 8.

Bottom of the Sixteenth:

And the bottom of our order... P Bob Hagans is starting to labor... But he has enough gas to sit us down in order with Paul Bouvet grounding out to the pitcher to end the inning....

Top of the Seventeenth:
If we can just hold them one more time... P Bob Grigg, starting his sixth inning, is starting to look a little tired... But there is no one else... After P Bob Hagan strikes out, Steve DeMuro drives one to deep center, but Jeff Schottler catches it at the wall! Qian Duan grounds out to short!

Bottom of the Seventeenth:

P Bob Hagan is clearly done.... If we do not win it right here, we do not deserve to win it. Dave Benya pops out to short... Woody Griesbach swings at the first pitch and lines out to left... Jeff Austin swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 3rd... We are pathetic....

Top of the Eighteenth:
With 2 outs, Joe Aloe grounds a hit to right. P Bob Grigg is laboring now... Gill Blair grounds a hit to center and Aloe heads to 3rd, but CF Jeff Schottler throws him out!!

Bottom of the Eighteenth:

P Bob Hagan begins his 9th inning of work. 91 pitches. We have had just 2 hits off him: the back-to-back home runs yesterday that tied the game in the bottom of the Eleventh. With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to right, but gets caught stealing....

Top of the Nineteenth:

P Bob Grigg starts his 8th inning of work and has thrown 95 pitches and is close to being gassed... Lou Hertzberg is up, but will only pitch after a run is scored... They go down in order!

Bottom of the Nineteenth:
Eddie Thomas lines a hit to center and we are going for the win right now and pulling P Bob Grigg. PH Phil Parker (28-S), the last player left on the bench is sent up. He will probably bunt, but we were going to pull Grigg regardless. He does NOT bunt and Eddie Thomas steals 2nd! Parker grounds out to 1st, unassisted, and Thomas goes to 3rd. Can Paul Bouvet just make good contact? Well, we will never know, because they walk him intentionally. Bouvet steals 2nd and Dave Benya draws a walk. One of those unintentional intentional ones... Bases loaded for Woody Griesbach, who takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

Won - 7 to 6 in 19 innings

Ties the record of 19 innings we had twice last season. We are 2-1 in games lasting 19 innings.
5 hours and 42 minutes.

We had 14 hits and made 1 error
Dallas had 17 hits and made 2 errors

Brian Hagans went 6.2 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 8. At bat, he hit a double and had 2 RBI. He lost a win because I did not get the Pen up a little sooner...

2B Paul Bouvet hit his 6th home run as a Beaver, was walked intentionally and stole a base, but was 0-7 otherwise. C Dave Benya had 2 hits with his 8th home run and drew a walk. PH/RF Woody Griesbach went 0 for 4, but drew 2 walks, including one with the bases loaded to end the game. He also stole a base. 1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits and stole a base. 3B Larry Sinchak had 2 hits with a double and an RBI. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits and 2 walks (1 INT) and scored a run. Today is OF Rollie Ferree's 29th birthday.

Dallas Eagles (66-54 .550 0.5 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (75-46 .620 in 1st place in the PCL West)

DAL: Bill Avallone (31-R 16-7 2.25) Silver Slugger All-Star vs. POR: John Alecci (26-R 0-2 0.64) Rookie

Avallone is the odds one favorite to win the Cy Young Award this year and repeat as the Silver Slugger winner at pitcher. We faced him once and beat him, scoring 5 runs on 7 hits in 2.2 innings, believe it or not. Over the last two seasons, he is batting .298 in 151 AB with 11 2B and 7 HR and 32 RBI with a .345 OBP and a .510 SLG. He even stole 3 bases last year, but has yet to try this season.

Alecci has had about the worst luck you can have so far. In the first two Major League starts of his career, he has gone 7 innings each time and allowed 2 hits in one game and 3 hits in the other and 1 total earned run (3 total runs). Yet he is 0-2. Is he finally going to get luck on his side and pitch a good game and get the win or is he (more likely) going to straighten out the karma flux by getting a loss on merit this time?

8: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .265-324-5-27-.705)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 23,005

Top of the First:
Tony Sierra swings at the first pitch and flies out to right. Chris Hagerty takes a walk, a rarity for him on the season, but his 3rd in the last 2 days. He only had 18 unintentional walks on the season before this series. He tries to steal 2nd, but we have a pitchout on, but he is safe anyway... Edwin Juan lines out to 1st. Steve DeMuro pops out to 2nd!

Bottom of the First:

Jeff Schottler flies out to center. Dennis Webb swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Bob Draper grounds out to the pitcher...

Top of the Third:

With 2 outs, Tony Sierra hits a home run to left center, only his 3rd of the season... He hit 5 all of last year. 1 to 0, Eagles.

The first time through our lineup is 9 up, 9 down...

Bottom of the Fourth:

The second time through our lineup starts with a home run down the left field line by Jeff Schottler!! Tie game: 1 to 1. The next three start a new streak of outs, though...

Bottom of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Paul Bouvet doubles off the top of the left field wall. They walk Dave Lesley intentionally to get to P John Alecci and I am tempted to pinch-hit, but our bullpen is still a little bushed. Alecci doubles to left and Bouvet scores! 2 to 1, Beavers! Jeff Schottler swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to short.

Top of the Seventh:
Dan Kaczmarek leads off with a 4 pitch walk. The Bullpen is up. Joe Aloe grounds into a force at 2nd, 3-6. PH Dick Gottesman (32-L) doubles to right center and Aloe scores and Gottesman ends up on 3rd. Tie game at 2 apiece. Once again, the seventh bites our starter... Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Gill Blair lines one to center and Jeff Schottler makes a great diving catch, but Gottesman trots home... 3 to 2, Eagles. P Bill Avallone grounds out to 1st, 3-1.

Bottom of the Eighth:
Jeff Schottler leads off with a liner to center for a hit. Dennis Webb swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4. Bob Draper swings at a 3-2 pitch and misses... Jeff Austin draws a 4 pitch walk. Tony Casarez grounds out to 3rd...

Bottom of the Ninth:

Larry Sinchak leads off and lines a 2-2 pitch to right for a hit. They go to their Bullpen. New Pitcher: Steve Patterson (30-L) with a 3.00 ERA. He pitched a scoreless inning on Monday. Eddie Thomas goes in to run for Sinchak. Paul Bouvet beats out an infield hit. Dave Lesley grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, but just beats the relay to 1st to avoid the double play. Thomas goes to 3rd. PH Woody Griesbach (24-R) is sent up with an admonition to not ground into a double play and not to strikeout... He does neither. He hits a home run to left!!! And THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!

Won - 5 to 3

Sweep!

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Dallas had 6 hits and made no errors

John Alecci went 6.1 innings, allowed 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks and struck out no one. At bat, he hit a double and had an RBI.
RHP Jorge Reyna faced 2 batters and got them both out.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (W 5-3) pitched 2 perfect innings and struck out 1.

Bill Avallone went 8+ innings, gave us 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks (2 INT) and struck out 3. He threw a WP. At bat, he went 0 for 3. It is the first game that he has had at least 3 AB and not had a hit since June 5.
LHP Steve Patterson (L 6-5 NS 4) faced 3 batters, got 1 out and gave us 2 hits with a home run.

CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with his 6th home run of the season. His hitting streak is at 12 games. PR Eddie Thomas scored a run. 2B Paul Bouvet had 2 hits with a double and scored a run. PH Woody Griesbach hit his 8th home run and had 3 RBI. He also ended the 19 inning game with a walk-off walk. This was a little more satisfying, I bet...

We are in Milwaukee to play a 3 game series over the weekend. They just won 2 of 3 in Los Angeles. We are 2-5 against them so far this season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were in the Cream City, May 13-15. The Brewers are 3rd in the PCL in scoring with 4.36 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.24). They are 10th in HR (77), but 1st in walks (432). They are 8th in fewest runs allowed with 4.19 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.24). They have allowed the 2nd most HR (112).

Portland Beavers (76-46 .623 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Milwaukee Brewers (60-61 .496 7 GB in 4th place in the PCL East)

POR: Frank Martin (27-R 9-5 3.09) vs. MIL: David Zecena (24-R 3-4 3.88) Rookie

Martin is 1-1 since his 6 week layoff, but pitched well in both games.

Zecena has pitched very well, striking out 8.9 per 9 innings, but he lacks the stamina to stay in the game for long. We have never faced him.

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Milwaukee County Stadium
Weather: 78 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 12 MPH wind blowing left to right.
Attendance: 23,159

Top of the First:

Jeff Schottler pops out to 2nd. Bob Draper flies out to right. Woody Griesbach swings at a 3-2 pitch and doubles down the left field line. Tony Casarez strikes out looking.... He is cold... 5 for 47 (.106) now in August....

Bottom of the First:

Bill Valdez, who is leading the PCL in BA, lines out to left. He hit .244 last year. Tom Harriger fouls out down the right field line, 2B Paul Bouvet making the catch. Larry Reichler lines a 2-2 pitch up the middle for a hit. Pedro Perez lines one down the left field line and Woody Griesbach makes a nice running catch!

Top of the Fifth:

With 2 outs, Bob Draper and Woody Griesbach hit back-to-back doubles! 1 to 0, Beavers! Tony Casarez grounds out to 2nd.

Top of the Sixth:

Dave Benya leads off with a double to right and they pull P Dave Zecena. New Pitcher: Steve Hendricks (35-R) with a 3.96 ERA in 52.1 IP. Larry Sinchak grounds out to short and Benya makes it to 3rd. They walk Paul Bouvet intentionally, so he steals 2nd! So they walk Dave Lesley intentionally to get to P Frank Martin, who is 1 for 32 on the season. He flies out to left and Benya tags up and beats the throw to the plate! 2 to 0, Beavers! Jeff Schottler lines a hit to left and Bouvet scores from 2nd on a close play at the plate! 3 to 0, Beavers! Love when those intentional walks score! Schottler has extended his hitting streak to 13 games. Bob Draper grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Seventh:

P Frank Martin has allowed 2 hits and no runs, but with all the trouble our starters have had of late in the seventh, I have the Bullpen ready to go. Pedro Perez leads off with a hit to right... Here we go. Gene Belt lines one back to the box and Frank Martin catches it and doubles Perez off at 1st! Bob Coyne grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Eighth:

With 1 out, Dave Glinsky, batting under .200, lines a hit to center. PH Gene Reed (33-L) gets hit by a pitch. Bill Valdez lines a hit to center and Glinsky scores. 3 to 1, Beavers. Call to the Bullpen: Don Schmidt (27-R). Tom Harriger pops out to 2nd. Larry Reichler doubles to right and both runners score to tie the game at 3.... We walk Pedro Perez intentionally. Gene Belt beats out an infield hit to load the bases up. Bob Coyne swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Top of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: George Thomas (34-L), their closer. He is 4-8 with 25 SV and a 5.36 ERA. He was 3-9 with 21 SV and a 4.65 ERA last year. Now it may just be me, but I would be looking for a new closer... By the way, he is the youngster in the Pen. They have 3 guys 35 or older. PH Rollie Ferree (29-R) grounds a hit to right. He steals 2nd! They decide to walk Woody Griesbach intentionally. Tony Casarez is taken down and PH Jeff Austin (30-R) is sent up. He lines a hit to right to load the bases up with no outs. Dave Benya up and a wild pitch scores Ferree! 4 to 3, Beavers! Benya then draws a walk to load them back up. Larry Sinchak grounds a hit to right, scoring Griesbach, but Austin gets thrown out at the plate.... Why are we taking risks like that with no outs?!?!?! 5 to 3, Beavers. Paul Bouvet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases back up. It is his 4th walk of the day, which ties the PCL record! Dave Lesley strikes out. PH Eddie Thomas (26-R) grounds a hit to center and Benya scores! 6 to 3, Beavers! Jeff Schottler grounds out to short.

We are forgoing the posting of the Beavers' individual stats this week and I am going to start posting them monthly. Since I am averaging almost a week of game time per actual day, it has meant that I have had to compile the lists almost every day and that is too much work.... But what takes more time than anything is figuring out something to post as the Random Fact of the Week, so that fan favorite feature is being eliminated. I will now only post tidbits that come to mind without me having to root around for one... For those subscribers outraged by this decision, please forward an SASE to the management and your subscription fee will be refunded. You'll have to look up the address yourself, though....

We are in Dallas to play a 3 game series. After getting swept by us in Portland in 3 games, they went to Oakland and lost 2 of 3 over the weekend to drop out of 1st place in the PCL East. We are 7-2 against them on the season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were in Dallas, May 17-19. This series will be the last time we face them this season. The Eagles are 4th in the PCL in scoring with 4.27 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.24). They are 4th in fewest runs allowed with 3.76 per game (Portland is #1 with 3.22).

Portland Beavers (78-46 .629 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Dallas Eagles (67-57 .540 2 GB in 2nd place in the PCL East)

POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 7-6 3.37) Rookie vs. DAL: Bill Avallone (31-R 16-7 2.30) Silver Slugger All-Star

Avallone is their #1 starter. We are 2-0 against him, though he went 8 innings and had a no decision last week.

Gaspar has pitched back-to-back CG wins in his last 2 starts: a 2 hit shutout and a 5 hitter where he allowed 2 runs against these Eagles.
