We are in Houston to play a 3 games series. The Astros just won 3 of 4 from the Angels here over the weekend and are 8-3 in their last 11 games. We are 3-3 against them so far this season and lost 2 of 3 the last time we were in the Astrodome, May 3-5. The Astros are 9th in scoring in the PCL this season with 3.87 runs per game (Portland is #5 with 4.20). Even though the Astrodome is a great place to pitch, they are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.55 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.16).

Portland Beavers (51-30 .630 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Houston Astros (34-44 .436 11.5 GB in 5th place in the PCL East)

POR: Larry Smith (27-R 1-0 0.00) Rookie vs. HOU: John Manly (26-R 1-7 5.32)

We are 1-1 versus Manly this year, but he did not get his win against us. We chased him in the 3rd inning once, but the other time he went a full 6 and only gave us 3 runs, though he walked 5 and stuck out 1.

This will be Smith's 2nd start as a Beaver; in his 1st, he pitched a shutout. We need him to go deep in this game because Barry Chapman is the only reliever we have that is not asking for a day off.

They are a very respectable 8th in fewest runs allowed, considering their home park, with 4.11 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.15).

Portland Beavers (53-33 .616 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (48-37 .565 in 1st place in the PCL East)

POR: Larry Smith (27-R 2-0 0.50) vs. DEN: Bob Harris (27-R Season debut)

This is Smith's 3rd start of the season for the Beavers. In his 1st, he pitched a shutout and in his 2nd, he had another CG win, allowing only 1 run. An ERA correction seems in order...

Kansas City Royals (48-42 .533 2.5 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (55-36 .604 in 1st place in the PCL West)

KC: Don Finley (27-R 6-4 3.22) All-Star vs. POR: Larry Smith (27-R 2-0 1.93)

Finley is their #1 starter. He pitched a scoreless inning in the All-Star Game on Tuesday. We are 1-1 against him this season, but only got 2 runs each time off him.

After a shutout and a CG where he allowed only 1 run in his first two starts as a Beaver, Smith allowed 4 runs and 7 hits in 5.1 innings at Denver last time out. But that is not a terrible outing in Denver. It would not be a terrible outing today, against the #1 offense in the League...

Top of the First:
Alejandro Prieto strikes out looking! Ernie McGuire fouls out to 1st. Randy Schmitt grounds out to short! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:
Paul Bouvet grounds out to short. Dennis Webb swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, 3-1. Bob Draper pops out to short.

Top of the Fifth:
With 2 outs, Ed Gladney takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jose Muniz swings at the first pitch and lines a hit to center and Gladney goes to 3rd. That is the Royals first hit of the game... P Don Finley flies out to center!

Top of the Sixth:
Alejandro Prieto leads off with a double to left center. We get the Bullpen up. With 1 out, we walk Randy Schmitt intentionally. I really do not like walking guys with less than 2 outs... Ricky Rodriguez up and Prieto steals 3rd on the first pitch and Schmitt steals 2nd on the third pitch... With the infield in, Rodriguez nevertheless manages to beat out an infield hit and Prieto scores... 1 to 0, Royals. Call to the Bullpen: Mitch Dowdell (25-L), who gave up a hit to Tony Olson, the next batter, the last time we brought him in to face him... This time Olson strikes out! Call to the Bullpen: Jorge Reyna (32-R). Pedro Fuentes grounds out to 3rd!

Bottom of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Paul Bouvet lines a hit to right and then steals 2nd. Dennis Webb grounds a hit up the middle and Bouvet beats the throw to the plate to tied the game at 1 apiece! Bob Draper grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6. There was no double play because Dennis Webb took SS Alejandro Prieto out with a hard slide and Prieto is hurt and has to leave the game. I hope he feels fine tomorrow, but I am glad he is out of this game. New SS is Frank Birch (33-L). Draper steals 2nd. Jeff Austin lines a hit to center and Draper scores! 2 to 1, Beavers! I cannot believe how Austin is hitting of late! He steals 2nd and they walk Tony Casarez intentionally. Woody Griesbach singles to left, but Austin gets thrown out at home by LF Ricky Rodriguez...

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Don Schmidt (27-R), to try for a 3 inning save... With 1out, Jose Muniz doubles to right. PH Julio Hernandez (30-L), batting .287, grounds out to 3rd. Frank Birch flies out to deep right center!

Top of the Eighth:
Eddie Thomas is in to play short. With 1 out, Randy Schmitt takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. and Ricky Rodriguez singles to left. But Tony Olson and Pedro Fuentes both strike out!

Top of the Ninth:
Rollie Ferree is in to play center and Woody Griesbach moves over to right. Ed Gladney flies out to left. Jose Muniz grounds out to short. PH Jim Dingess (33-R), batting .203 with 2 HR in 138 AB, strikes out and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!

Won - 2 to 1

We had 8 hits and made no errors
Kansas City had 5 hits and made no errors

Larry Smith went 5.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 3 hits, 3 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.
LHP Mitch Dowdell faced 1 batter and struck out out.
RHP Jorge Reyna (W 4-2) faced 1 batter and retired him.
RHP Don Schmidt (SV 11) went 3 shutout innings, allowed 3 hits, 1 walk and struck out 4.

Don Finley (L 6-5) went 6 innings, gave us 2 runs, 6 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 2.

1B Jeff Austin had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. CF/RF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits. 3B Omar Flores hit a double, but got caught stealing 3rd.

The Royals announced that Alejandro Prieto had a concussion and would likely miss 5 to 6 weeks... Dennis Webb will not be popular in Kansas City...

Luckily, we do not have to go there again this season. The Royals are the first team that we are done with for the year. We lost the season series to them, 5-7. We split it, 6-6, last year.

Monday Morning Report

NL Player of the Week - Carlos Mendoza, CF, Pittsburgh (27-R .244/.304/.408) Had 6 hits (13 AB) with 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 BB, 0 SO, 1 SB, 0 CS, 5 R and 6 RBI in 4 G
PCL Player of the Week - Greg Werner, SS, Denver (28-R .343/.379/.483) Had 13 hits (19 AB) with 2 HR, 1 BB, 0 SO, 2 SB, 1 CS, 5 R, 9 RBI in 4 G

(Slash lines are for the season, not the week)

July 13 - CF Tom Allen (31-S) of Detroit hit 2 home runs, drew 2 walks, scored 3 runs and had 6 RBI at home versus Washington. The Tigers won, 10 to 6.
July 14 - SS Greg Werner (28-R) of Denver had 5 hits, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had 3 RBI at home versus Oakland. The Bears won, 11 to 6.
July 14 - RF Dave Classen (27-L) of Boston had 5 hits with a walk and an RBI at home versus Cleveland, but the Braves lost, 7 to 5, in 11 innings.
July 14 - New York lost P Terry Melton (27-R) for the rest of the season with a torn triceps muscle. He was 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA. That is why we traded him...
July 14 - SP Jamie Cleveland (31-L) of Pittsburgh pitched 8.2 shutout innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 5 at home versus Philadelphia, one of the top offenses in the NL. He is now 4-0 with an 0.70 ERA for the Pirates since we traded him to them. This was his 3rd start and he has allowed exactly 1 run in 24.2 innings...

Random Fact of Week: Pittsburgh and St. Louis have won 22 games in a row between them! Philadelphia, who was leading the NL East earlier in the season, has lost 9 in a row. Their pitching has suffered some devastating injuries and their rotation is pretty stinky right now. Ron Wolf is their #1 starter. He has not pitched that badly. He is 4-5 with a 4.30 ERA in 14 starts since we traded him to them, but he has a 1.16 WHIP and has only allowed 7 HR in 90 IP. Their top 2 starters from last year are out for the season and their closer is out indefinitely. CF Perry Templet, by the way, is hitting .288 for them with a .797 OPS and is playing superb defense, of course.

The Houston Astros are here to play a 3 game series. They split a 4 game series in Los Angeles over the weekend. We are 4-5 against them on the year and won 2 of 3 the last time they were in Portland, April 5-7. They are 10th in the PCL in scoring with 3.81 runs per game (Portland is #4 with 4.16). They have a good batting average (.259) and are not last in HR (61), which is an accomplishment for a team playing in the Astrodome. The main reason that they are stinking on offense is that they are dead last in walks (218) and have the 3rd worst OBP (.309). The Astros are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.43 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.16). That is NOT much of an accomplishment for a team playing in the Astrodome.

Houston Astros (41-48 .461 8.5 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (56-36 .609 in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: John Manley (26-R 1-9 5.49) vs. POR: Lonny Tomski (28-R 1-3 4.63)

I hate to admit this, but we are 1-1 against Manly this season, though he did not get his win against us. The last time we faced him, we scored 5 runs in 5 innings and won.

In his last start for the Beavers, Tomski gave up 5 runs in 6.1 IP. He has not won a game in the Majors or the minors since he pitched a 4 hit shutout for Vancouver (AAA) on June 9.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
HOUSTON
1: 1B Bob Trigg (30-S .305-266-1-19-.731) Silver Slugger

8: SS Dave Lesley (27-R .256-234-4-20-.682)
9: P Lonny Tomski (28-R .250-12-0-1-.500)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 18,153

Top of the First:

Bob Trigg gets plunked to lead off the game... He steals 2nd on the first pitch to Dave Longman. Longman pops out to shallow center and Trigg tags up and tests the arm of Woody Griesbach, but the throw is off line... Bob Webster loops a hit into right center and Trigg scores. 1 to 0, Astros. Webster steals 2nd and goes to 3rd when C Dave Benya throws the ball into the outfield... I don't think P Lonny Tomski ever even looked over at Webster at 1st... Rick Dill grounds a hit to left and Webster scores... 2 to 0, Astros. Tony Baez grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-4. Don Mosley lines out to short, Dave Lesley making a nice play.

Bottom of the First:

Paul Bouvet grounds out to 3rd. Dave Benya swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Bob Draper strikes out looking.... I hate Mondays...

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Tony Baez singles to left and goes to 2nd when Bob Draper makes an error trying to scoop the ball... With 2 outs, Steve Coker, that noted slugger (1 HR in 140 AB), hits a home run to right... 4 to 0, Astros. That is Coker's second home run of the season and both have been against us...

Bottom of the Fourth:
Tony Casarez leads off with a hit to left and Gordon Saunderson follows with a home run to right! 4 to 2, Astros. I wish Saunderson was a decent defender. He'd be in the lineup a lot more often if he was... With 1 out, Omar Flores singles and steals 2nd. With 2 outs, Lonny Tomski singles him home! 4 to 3, Astros. Paul Bouvet strikes out....

Bottom of the Sixth:

With 1 out, Woody Griesbach takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Omar Flores grounds out to short and Griesbach goes to 2nd. They walk Dave Lesley intentionally to get to Lonny Tomski, so we send up PH Jeff Austin (30-R). He strikes out... Should have let Tomski hit...

Top of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (27-R). With 1 out, Russ Mitchell singles to center. With 2 outs, Chapman balks him to 2nd. We walk Bob Trigg intentionally to get to Dave Longman, who singles to right and Mitchell scores... 5 to 3, Astros. Bob Webster takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4 to load the bases up... Rick Dill strikes out.

Bottom of the Seventh:

New Pitcher: Brad Hamel (24-R), who has given up 15 hits in 8.2 IP. Top of our order up and they go down 1-2-3....

Top of the Eighth:
Tony Baez gets beaned... Don Mosley bunts him to 2nd. We walk Steve Coker intentionally. I HATE that! Russ Mitchell grounds into a force at 2nd, 6-4, and Baez goes to 3rd. PH Rob Mullins (29-L) beats out an infield hit and Baez scores.... 6 to 3, Astros. Bob Trigg grounds out to short.

Bottom of the Ninth:

On the Hill: Barry Haneke (28-R) and his 1.96 ERA. He is beginning his second inning of work after getting us out in order in the Eighth. Omar Flores beats out an infield hit. Dave Lesley reaches on an error by 3B Rick Dill. New Pitcher: Mark Faulk (29-R), their current closer because Phil DeNeui is injured. Faulk has an 0.59 ERA with 8 H in 15.1 IP and 15 SO. PH Larry Sinchak (31-R) grounds a single to right and the bases are loaded with nobody out. Paul Bouvet drives an 0-2 pitch over the head of the center fielder for a double and 2 runs score! 6 to 5, Astros. Dave Benya grounds a hit to right and Sinchak scores! Tie Game: 6 to 6! Bouvet is the winning run, 90 feet away.... No outs... Benya steals 2nd for some reason..... Luckily, he was safe... Bob Draper lines out to right and Bouvet heads home....no throw and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!

I must admit that I had checked out there for a while....

Won - 7 to 6

Our first walk-off win since June 10, when Draper also ended the game. That time it was with a 2 out HR.

We had 10 hits and made 3 errors
Houston had 8 hits and made 2 errors

Lonny Tomski went 6 innings, allowed 4 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, no walks, 1 HB and struck out 4. At bat, he had a hit and an RBI.
RHP Barry Chapman (W 4-3) went 3 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 4 walks (2 INT), 1 HB and struck out 3. He balked.

John Manly went 6 innings, gave us 3 runs, 6 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 7.
RHP Mark Faulk (L 0-2 BS 1) faced 4 batters and got 1 out, gave us 2 runs and 3 hits.

2B Paul Bouvet hit a double, scored the winning run and had 2 RBI. C Dave Benya had 2 hits, stole a base and had an RBI. He leads the PCL in SB by a catcher with 8. Our other 2 catchers, Dennis Webb and Phil Parker are tied for 2nd with 1... Bob Draper went hitless, but knocked in the winning run with a SF. He has gone very cold after his unbelievably hot start. 7 for his last 42 (.167). RF Gordon Saunderson hit his 3rd home run of the season and had 2 RBI. 3B Omar Flores had 2 hits, stole a base and scored 2 runs. PH Larry Sinchak had a hit and scored a run.

Houston Astros (41-49 .456 9 GB in 6th (last) place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (57-36 .613 in 1st place in the PCL West)

HOU: Pat Porter (26-R 4-9 3.96) vs. POR: Angel Gaspar (23-R 4-4 3.99) Rookie

Porter is their #1 starter. We are 0-3 when facing him this season and he has pitched brilliantly every time, allowing us only 1 earned in each game, though only once did he manage to get credit for the win.

Gaspar has lost his last 2 starts.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
HOUSTON
1: 1B Bob Trigg (30-S .301-269-1-19-.727) Silver Slugger

5: LF Tony Baez (33-R .239-297-9-40-.654)
6: CF Don Mosley (30-R .192-308-3-26-.521)
7: C Dick Becker (34-R .223-175-6-18-.652)
8: SS Russ Mitchell (32-R .277-303-3-23-.678)
9: P Pat Porter (26-R .269-26-0-4-.663)

PORTLAND
1: 3B Omar Flores (21-L .273-220-4-17-.713) Rookie
2: C Dave Benya (27-S .324-136-2-22-.796)
3: RF Bob Draper (23-L .303-119-5-25-.849) Rookie
4: 1B Jeff Austin (30-R .270-344-15-50-.791)
5: LF Tony Casarez (20-L .252-246-9-28-.726) Rookie
6: 2B Dave Lesley (27-R .253-237-4-20-.677)
7: CF Woody Griesbach (24-R .242-161-6-18-.702) Rookie
8: SS Eddie Thomas (26-R .200-170-4-25-.564) Gold Glove
9: P Angel Gaspar (23-R .129-31-0-0-.258) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 17,130

Top of the First:
Bob Trigg flies out to center. Dave Longman strikes out. Bob Webster swings at the first pitch and grounds out to 1st, unassisted! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Omar Flores grounds out to 1st, unassisted. Dave Benya grounds out to 3rd. Bob Draper swings at a 3-2 pitch and grounds out to 2nd.

First time through the order we go down in order...

Bottom of the Fourth:
Omar Flores leads off with our first hit of the game, a grounder to left. But Dave Benya grounds into a force at 2nd, 4-6, and then gets himself caught stealing, so we can still lay claim to having left no runners on base...

Top of the Fifth:
Having congratulated ourselves on getting through the middle of their lineup with no damage done, we let Don Mosley double to left with 2 outs and Dick Becker single to score the run.... 1 to 0, Astros.

Bottom of the Fifth:
We get our own 2 out rally when Dave Lesley draws a walk. Woody Griesbach singles to center and Lesley heads to 3rd. CF Don Mosley throws the ball away for an error and Lesley scores to tie the game at 1! They walk Eddie Thomas intentionally to get to Angel Gaspar, though he truthfully is not a WHOLE lot worse than Thomas... It is a bit too early to pinch-hit, though... Gaspar strikes out.

Bottom of the Sixth:

Omar Flores leads off with a double to right center! But the next three make outs...

Bottom of the Seventh:
Woody Griesbach hits a 2 out double and goes to 3rd on a wild pitch, but PH Gordon Saunderson (27-L) flies out to left.

Top of the Eighth:

Larry Sinchak is in to play 2nd and Dave Lesley moves over to short. Don Mosley grounds one to short and Lesley throws it away for a 2 base error... With 1 out, P Angel Gaspar balks Mosley to 3rd... With the infield in, Russ Mitchell beats out an infield hit and Mosley scores... 2 to 1, Astros. Their worst hitter has scored both of their runs... With P Pat Porter up, Gaspar balks again... With 2 outs, we walk Bob Trigg intentionally to face Dave Longman, who will be Gaspar's final batter of the day. Longman grounds out to 2nd!

Bottom of the Eighth:
PH Paul Bouvet (26-R) works the count full and then grounds a hit to left. Omar Flores bunts him to 2nd. With a defensively challenged catcher like Dick Becker and an uber speedster on first like Bouvet, would not it make more sense to try to steal 2nd and then let Flores try to knock him in? Dave Benya hits a home run to right!!!! 3 to 2, Beavers!!! Bob Draper doubles down the right field line! The Astros manager is staying put in his seat in the dugout... Jeff Austin works the count full and then swings at the payoff pitch and homers to right center!!! 5 to 2, Beavers! Now, the Astros manager pops up out of his hole. New Pitcher: Dale West (25-R) with a 3.81 ERA in 49.2 IP. Tony Casarez hits one down the right field line just fair and just over the fence!!! 6 to 2, Beavers! The first time that the Beavers have ever hit 3 home runs in one inning!

Won - 6 to 2

We had 9 hits and made 1 error
Houston had 5 hits and made 1 error

Angel Gaspar (W 5-4) went 8 innings, allowed 2 runs (1 earned), 4 hits, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 4. He balked twice.
RHP Jorge Reyna pitched a scoreless 9th, allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

Pat Porter (L 4-10) went 7.1 innings, gave us 5 runs, 8 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 3. He threw a WP.

3B Omar Flores had 2 hits with a double. C Dave Benya hit his 3rd home run of the season and had 2 RBI. 1B Jeff Austin hit his 16th home run of the year and had 2 RBI. He has already matched his season total from last year! He is currently tied for 4th in the PCL in HR and is 6th in RBI. LF Tony Casarez hit his 10th home run. CF Woody Griesbach had 2 hits with a double. PH/2B Paul Bouvet had a hit and scored a run.
