Friday, August 10, Year I

Both SP John Alecci (25-R) and RP Michael Navarrete (27-L) were put on the train to Vancouver (AAA) last night. My momma always told me to never trust a man who went by the name of Michael. He thinks he's too good to be a Mike or a Mickey.

RP Curt Riley (35-R), who only got to pitch 2 games in the Majors has been recalled. OF Woody Griesbach (23-R) has been called up to help in the outfield while Dale Ainsworth is recuperating. When we need a number #5 starter again, we will call one up. Griesbach has been a bit of a disappointment so far in Vancouver. He was the #48 prospect, according to Baseball American this Spring. We hoped he would knock the cover off the ball and force us to bring him to Portland, but he is only hitting .273 with a.700 OPS in AAA. He has not hit for any power (3 HR) or drawn many walks. He defense has been excellent, at least. Maybe this call up will set him on fire...

San Francisco Seals (53-61 .465 17 GB in 5th place in the PCL West) at
Portland Beavers (70-44 .614 in 1st place in the PCL West)

SF: Brett Davidson (31-L 7-12 3.74) vs. POR: Tom Horn (25-L 7-5 2.94) Rookie

Davidson was claimed off waivers from Houston on July 1. Since joining the Seals, he is 2-4 with a 4.86 ERA. We beat him when he was with Houston, but in his start against us as a Seal, we only got 3 hits in 8 IP. We won the game in extra innings, though.

The last time Horn faced the Seals here in the Skydome, he pitched a shutout.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)

8: C Dave Benya (26-S .157-70-0-2-.415)
9: P Tom Horn (25-L .262-42-0-9-.589) Rookie

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: Roof Closed
Attendance: 25,843

Top of the First:
Clint Graham grounds out to short. Chris Greenwald grounds out to short. Marcos Barron lines one to deep left, but Howard McNeal makes a great catch! 1-2-3!

Bottom of the First:

Eddie Thomas lines a hit to left. The battery of P Brett Davidson and C Chip Carpenter is about as tough as it gets to run on. Unless there is a passed ball! Thomas moves to 2nd. Dave Lesley flies out to left. Gary Long grounds out to 3rd. He has cooled off considerably. Hitting under .200 since the 1st of July.... Howard McNeal lines a hit to center and Thomas scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! McNeal tries to steal 2nd and is safe! Jeff Schottler grounds out to 1st, unassisted.

Bottom of the Second:
With 1 out, Woody Griesbach grounds out to short in his first Major League at bat.

Top of the Third:
Dennis Williamson leads off with a hit and, with 2 outs, Clint Graham homers to straight away center. 440 feet. 2 to 1, Seals.

Top of the Fourth:
Marcos Barron leads off by blooping a hit to right and then Chip Carpenter lines one to left, just over the fence... 4 to 1, Seals. With 1 out, Ron Chestnut doubles to left. With 2 outs, we walk Domingo Santay intentionally to get to the pitcher. Brett Davidson bounces one back to the box, but P Tom Horn throws the ball away at 1st for a 2 base error and Chestnut scores... 5 to 1, Seals. Clint Graham walks to load the bases up, but Chris Greenwald grounds out to 2nd.

Bottom of the Fifth:
Woody Griesbach strikes out in his 2nd Major League at bat...so much for getting fired up... Dave Benya then singles and PH Joe Harrison (35-R) follows with a double. Eddie Thomas grounds out to 3rd and Benya scores. 5 to 2, Seals.

Bottom of the Sixth:
With 2 outs, Jeff Schottler singles and then Jeff Austin doubles him home. 5 to 3, Seals.

Top of the Eighth:
New Pitcher: Brian Hagans (25-R). With 1 out, Clint bounces one back to the box, but Hagans flubs it for an error. Chris Greenwald doubles to left center. We walk Marco Barron intentionally to load the bases up with 1 out. Chip Carpenter flies out to shallow center and the runners hold. Dave DiMeglio flies out to right!!! No runs!!!

Bottom of the Eighth:
The first two go down quietly, but Howard McNeal beats out an infield hit and then Jeff Schottler lines a home run to left to tie the game at 5 all!!!! That sends Davidson to the showers. New Pitcher: Rich Kinney (33-R). He strikes out Jeff Austin, which is not much to brag about....

Top of the Ninth:
We have to stick with Brian Hagans on the mound for this inning, at least. Ron Chestnut leads off with a hit, but with 2 outs, C Dave Benya throws him out trying to steal!

Bottom of the Ninth:
New Pitcher: Jesse Adcock (28-L). Their excellent closer and our old one. Got off to a rough start in San Francisco, but has been lights out since the 1st of June. We did get a win off him back in May and he has 2 saves against us. With 1 out, Dave Benya lines a hit to center. Randy James (32-R) is sent up to hit. Adcock does not pay attention to Benya at first base and he lights out for 2nd....C Chip Carpenter's throw is into the outfield and Benya ends up on 3rd!!!! If Brnya scores, he will get to start for a few days! They decide to walk Randy James intentionally to get to Eddie Thomas. 1-1 pitch and Eddie lines a hit to center and THIS Ball Game Belongs to the Beavers!!!!!

Won - 6 to 5

We are now 8-6 in walk off games.
Eddie Thomas, the worst hitter on the team, becomes the first Beaver to end 2 games with his bat!

We had 10 hits and made 2 errors
San Francisco had 12 hits and made 1 error

It is the first time we have reached double figures in hits in August.

Tom Horn went 5 innings, allowed 5 runs (4 earned), 8 hits, 2 home runs, 2 walks (1 INT) and struck out 2.
Antoine Redd went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 4.
Brian Hagans (W 2-0) went 2 scoreless innings, allowed 2 hits, 1 walk (INT) and struck out 1.

Brett Davidson went 7.2 innings, gave us 5 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, 1 walk and struck out 3.
LHP Jesse Adcock (L 4-7) faced 4 batter, got 1 out, gave us 1 unearned run, 2 hits and 1 walk (INT).

SS Eddie Thomas had 2 hits, including the game winner, scored a run and had 2 RBI. He can hit lefties, but is clueless against right-handers. LF Howard McNeal had 2 hits, stole a base, scored a run and had an RBI. CF Jeff Schottler had 2 hits with his 7th home run of the season, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. 1B Jeff Austin hit a double and had an RBI. RF Woody Griesbach went 0 for 4 in his Major League debut. C Dave Benya had 2 hits, stole a huge base and scored 2 runs. PH Joe Harrison hit a double.

For the Seals, C Chip Carpenter had 3 hits with his 11th home run, drew a walk and had 2 RBI.

Sounds a whole lot like this new TV show everybody is talking about, "Flame of Moans", which viciously cripples like your three favorite characters in every episode, but doesn't quite kill them...

Perry Templet swings at a 3-0 pitch with the bases empty and us down 2 runs....and grounds out to short. If he wasn't one of the very few people hitting his weight on this team of late, I would sit him on the bench....

John Ross doubles to left for their 10th hit of the game.... We walk Domingo Santay to get to the pitcher, Ray Hradek, who will be Ron Wolf's final batter of the game, regardless of the outcome. Hradek lines one hard, but SS Eddie Thomas makes a fine catch to rob him of a hit! Wolf had nothing, today....

Lost - 7 to 2

Random Fact of Week: Question: Which Beaver has had a day at the plate that is ranked in the top 25 performances of this season? Answer: None... New York and Philadelphia each have 4 days make the list. We do have 4 of the top 25 pitching performances, though, which is the most of any team. 2 by Terry Melton and one each by Ron Wolf and Frank Martin. Melton is one of 4 pitchers to make the list twice. The other 3 are Rick Wright of Houston, Mike Nackley of San Diego and Miguel Garza of Detroit. Wright and Garza each have made the list pitching for 2 different teams.

Tuesday, August 14, Year I

We are in Los Angeles to begin a road trip with 3 games against the Angels. They lost 3 of 4 in Seattle over the weekend. We are 4-5 against them this season. The last time we were in Los Angeles was for the second series of the season, April 6-8, and we lost 2 of 3. The Angels are 7th in the PCL in scoring with 3.9 runs per game (Portland is tied for 8th with 3.8). They are 1 HR shy of leading the League with 108, but have the lowest batting average (.232). They are last in triples with only 13 and second to last in stolen bases with 83. They are 5th in fewest runs allowed with 3.8 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.2).

Portland Beavers (71-46 .607 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Los Angeles Angels (58-59 .496 13 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Frank Martin (26-R 11-8 2.64) Rookie vs. LA: Dave Ibarra (28-R 13-5 3.05) All-Star

Ibarra is a selfish braggart. We have faced him once and we did not make him eat his words.... He gave us 5 hits and 1 run in 8 IP and banked a win.

Martin is starting to look like our ace, at least until Terry Melton returns. He has won 3 starts in a row, allowing only 2 total runs in those games.

Dale Ainsworth, our best hitter, says he is ready to play!

Portland Beavers (72-46 .610 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Los Angeles Angels (58-60 .496 14 GB in 2nd place in the PCL West)

POR: Tom Horn (25-L 7-5 3.10) Rookie vs. LA: Ricardo Avalos (24-R 6-11 4.74) Rookie

But he has pitched well in his last 2 starts, allowing only 3 R in 14.1 IP. He is 0-1 in 2 starts against us, but went 8 innings each time and gave us only 3 runs in each game.

Horn gave up 5 runs in 5 IP in his last start.

Friday, August 17, Year I

We are in Dallas for a possible preview of the Pacific Coast League Championship series with 3 games over the weekend. It would seem (knock on wood) that we have the West in hand with the 2nd place team 4 games under .500 and 16 games out. The East has become a 2 horse race with Dallas leading Kansas City by 3 games. The Eagles just won 2 of 3 in Houston and are 11-3 in August. We are 5-1 against them, but I have a feeling that record is in for a correction this weekend. Our first trip to Dallas saw us win 2 of 3, May 29-31. The Eagles lead the PCL in scoring by a healthy margin with 4.7 runs per game (Portland is 7th with 3.9). They are not a home run hitting team: they are only 9th in home runs with 86, though that is a lot more than out paltry total of 63, which is last in the League. They lead or are tied for the lead in 2B (224), BB (435) and BA (.269), OBP (.339) and SLG (.406). They are 2nd in 3B (42) and SB (145). In short, they are our offense after the fairy godmother turns us into a princess. They are not slackers on the other side of the diamond, either. They are 2nd in fewest runs allowed with 3.6 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.2), even though 3 of their starting pitchers have been grabbed off the waiver wire this season.

We sent OF Woody Griesbach (23-R) back to Vancouver (AAA) and recalled P Dave Cole (25-R) to pitch tomorrow's game. I meant to call up Tim Carrol (26-R), who only had one start for Portland earlier and it was decent and he deserves another outing, but my personal assistant, Christy, failed to deliver my message to Vancouver to hold him out of games so he would be rested. She says I never gave her any message to deliver, but I am 100% certain that I meant to.... Anyway, unless Cole pitches great tomorrow, he will be sent back to Vancouver and we'll bring up Carrol.

Portland Beavers (74-46 .617 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Dallas Eagles (71-49 .592 in 1st place in the PCL East)

POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 12-8 2.95) vs. DAL: Henry Vega (25-R 5-3 3.07) Rookie

Vega was claimed off waivers on July 1 from San Francisco. We faced him when he was a Seal and he held us to 1 run on 4 hits and 2 walks in 8 IP. We won the game in extra innings.

Wolf has lost his last 3 starts and had absolutely nothing going last time out with 10 hits and 3 walks allowed in 5 IP.

Cole pitched a 4 hit shutout at Sacramento in his last start for Vancouver (AAA). In his last start for the Beavers, he gave up 5 runs in 2.2 IP and showed me that he was a quitter. Has he changed his attitude? I hope so.

8: RF Tommy Wilson (29-R .250-128-1-17-.662)
9: P Brad Dombeck (32-R .128-39-0-4-.370)

Game Start: 1:05 PM
Ballpark: Arlington Stadium
Weather: 92 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 12 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Attendance: 24,972

Top of the First:

Dale Ainsworth strikes out on 3 pitches... Dennis Webb strikes out on 4 pitches... This guy is NOT a strikeout pitcher! Only 46 in 136.2 IP (3.0 per 9) coming into this game.... Perry Templet flies out to deep left.

Bottom of the First:
Tony Sierra flies out to almost the same spot that Perry Templet did. Gill Blair gets beaned. Qian Duan, the only Chinese player in the Major Leagues, grounds into a 6-4-3 double play!!

Bottom of the Second:

The first two hitters single: Steve DeMuro and Bob Holder. Joe Aloe grounds into a force at 2nd, 1-6, and there are runners at the corners with 1 out. Aloe tries to steal, but C Dennis Webb throws him out!! 2 down and we have a chance to escape unscathed when Dan Kaczmarek grounds one to 1st, but Jeff Schottler makes a bad toss to the pitcher covering for another of those derned errors and DeMuro scores. 1 to 0, Eagles.

Bottom of the Fourth:
The first two reach again when Qian Duan draws a walk and Steve DeMuro singles, but Bob Holder grounds into a 4-6-3 double play! Joe Aloe grounds one to 3rd and Randy James boots it and Duan scores....E-5. 2 to 0, Eagles and 2 unearned runs... You know the amazing thing about this streak of errors? Dave Lesley is not on the field....

Bottom of the Fifth:
Yet again, the first two reach with a walk to Tony Sierra and a hit by Gill Blair. Qian Duan lines one to left and Sierra scores from 2nd. 3 to 0, Eagles. The Bullpen is scrambled. Steve DeMuro hits one deep to right and Dale Ainsworth goes back to the wall and leaps, but it is over his glove for a home run.... 6 to 0, Eagles. P Frank Martin has allowed more runs in this game than in his last 4 starts combined.... With 2 outs and the bases empty, we try to let Martin close out the inning, but he walks Joe Aloe. Call to the Bullpen: Brian Hagans (25-R). Dan Kaczmarek launches a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall... 8 to 0, Eagles. Hey! Is your kid done with that Connect-the-Dots coloring book? Can I try one?

Lost - 9 to 3

We had 8 hits and made 2 errors
Dallas had 11 hits and made no errors

10 games in a row with an error and 15 errors in those games....
Even with this horrible stretch, we still have made the 2nd fewest errors in the PCL.
It is not like we have a bad fielding team....
We lead the Majors by a lot in Zone Rating.

Frank Martin (L 12-9) went 4.2 innings, allowed 7 runs (5 earned), 7 hits, 1 home run, 3 walks, 1 HB and struck out 2.
RHP Brian Hagans went 3.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 4 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP. Yes, of course, it was with a runner on 3rd.

Brad Dombeck (W 9-10) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 3 runs, 8 hits, 1 home run, no walks. 1 HB and struck out 7.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits and scored a run. 3B Randy James hit a double and his team leading 12th home run of the season and had all 3 of our RBI, but also bade a big error. 2B Gary Long had 2 hits.

For the Eagles, LF Steve DeMuro, who they told us was cold coming into this series, had 4 hits with his 16th home run of the season and 2nd in as many days, scored 3 runs and had 3 RBI.

Random Fact of Week: All of our minor league affiliate are at .500 or better on the season, except for the Helena Gold Sox of the Pioneer League (R). 3 of them are in 2nd place in their leagues and 1 is leading their league, the Dubuque Packers of the Midwest League (A). A shakeup of our affiliations is in store for next season. Editor's Note: When I originally created this league, I was planning on playing as Seattle and gave them some of my favorite minor league teams, but then I decided I did not want to play my home games in the Kingdome and switched to Portland.

We are in the Mile High City to play the Denver Bears a short 2 game set to finish this road trip. On July 26-29, they swept the first place Dallas Eagles in a 4 game series in Denver to pull to with 3 games of the lead. But they immediately cooled off and dropped out of the race. They did just sweep Seattle in 3 games over the weekend, however, outscoring the Rainiers, 33 to 10. We are 6-1 against them on the season and won 3 of 4 in our first visit to Mile High Stadium. They are 2nd in the PCL in scoring with 4.7 runs per game (Portland is 8th with 3.9). They score 5.6 runs per game at home, while slugging .459 as a team. They are 11th in runs allowed with 4.7 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.2). They allow 5.6 runs per game at home, while opposing batters slug .434.

Portland Beavers (75-48 .610 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (64-59 .520 9 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Tom Horn (25-L 7-5 3.09) Rookie vs. DEN: Stump Seely (30-R 0-0 6.75)

Seely has only made 2 starts this season because in his first start of the year, he hurt his shoulder. In his first start since coming back, he gave up 5 runs and 11 hits in 5.2 IP at Minnesota. Hopefully, he is still rusty today, because he used to be a very solid pitcher who pitched to contact and had excellent control and kept the ball in the yard.

Horn has only had 2 decisions in his last 7 starts, though they were both wins.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
PORTLAND
1: RF Dale Ainsworth (26-L .305-452-7-48-.794)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: Mile High Stadium
Weather: 79 F, Partly Cloudy, with a 10 MPH wind blowing in from left.
Attendance: 21,183

Top of the First:
Dale Ainsworth beats out an infield hit. He steals 2nd. Dennis Webb strikes out. Perry Templet lines a hit to right, but Ainsworth stops at 3rd. RF Mel Jarrett has one of the strongest arms in Baseball. Wild pitch! Ainsworth scores! 1 to 0, Beavers! Randy James grounds out to short and Templet goes to 3rd. Jeff Schottler grounds out to 3rd.

Bottom of the First:
Luis Castillo plunks one down in front of the plate and C Dennis Webb throws him out. Greg Werner walks. He steals 2nd. Ivan Gallegas lines out to deep center, but P Tom Horn calls the trainer out.... He has to leave the game. New Pitcher: Antoine Redd (31-R). Mel Jarrett swings at the first pitch Redd throws and triples to right, scoring Werner to tie the game at 1. Wally Dardick takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Mike Carpenter grounds out to 3rd!

Top of the Second:

The first 2 batters, Dave Lesley, Jeff Austin and Eddie Thomas all single and we have the bases loaded with no outs for P Antoine Redd, who is allowed to bat. He strikes out. Dale Ainsworth draws a 4 pitch walk! 2 to 1 , Beavers! Dennis Webb grounds into a 4-6-3 double play....

Top of the Third:
Perry Templet leads off with a liner to left for a hit and gets bunted to 2nd by cleanup hitter Randy James. Why we are bunting with our cleanup hitter in Mile High Stadium is a mystery to me.... Jeff Schottler grounds a hit to left and Templet scores! 3 to 1, Beavers! Schottler steals 2nd. Dave Lesley takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Jeff Austin also gets a full count, but grounds into a 4-6-3 double play....

Through 5 innings, we have grounded into 3 double plays....

Bottom of the Fifth:
Luis Castillo leads off with a walk steals 2nd and 3rd and scores on a ground out. 3 to 2, Beavers.

Top of the Seventh:

Jeff Schottler strikes out....

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Lou Hertzberg (29-L). With 1 out, Luis Castillo singles. With 2 outs, Ivan Gallegas doubles to left and Castillo scores. 5 to 3, Beavers. Mel Jarrett grounds out to short!

Won - 5 to 3

We grounded into 4 double plays and lined out into another.

We had 13 hits and made no errors
Denver had 6 hits and made 1 error

No errors!!! That breaks our streak of 10 games in a row with 1.

Tom Horn faced 3 batters, got 2 outs, allowed a run and a walk.
RHP Antoine Redd (W 4-4) went 5.1 innings, allowed 1 run, 4 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3.
LHP Lou Hertzberg (H 6) went 2 innings, allowed 1 run, 2 hits and struck out 1.
RHP Barry Chapman (SV 7) pitched a perfect 9th and struck out 1.

Stump Seely (L 0-1) went 6.1 innings, gave us 5 runs (4 earned), 10 hits, 3 walks and struck out 3. He threw a WP.

RF Dale Ainsworth had a hit and a walk, stole a base, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. C Dennis Webb had 2 hits. PH Joe Harrison had a hit. CF Perry Templet had 4 hits, scored a run and had 2 RBI. 2B Dave Lesley had 2 hits and a walk and scored a run. PH Gordon Saunderson drew a walk and scored a run. PH Howard McNeal drew a walk.

Pepe, our trainer, had no report on P Tom Horn, but instead referred me to a Doctor somebody or other, the Bears team doc. He said Horn's elbow is completely blown out and needs surgery that will keep him out of action for the rest of this season and all of next year, too.....

Tuesday, August 21, Year I

We called up P Tim Carrol (26-R) from Vancouver (AAA) to take the spot of Tom Horn, who was put on the 360 day DL....

Portland Beavers (76-48 .613 in 1st place in the PCL West) at
Denver Bears (64-60 .516 10 GB in 3rd place in the PCL East)

POR: Johnny Maskell (24-R 3-4 3.86) Rookie vs. DEN: Jerry Ivester (25-R 8-10 4.46) Rookie

Ivester is a good young pitcher who's numbers are ugly because of Mile High Stadium. On the road, he has a 3.48 ERA and has given up 13 of his 17 HR allowed here in Denver. We won both games he started against us. He pitched 1 good game and 1 bad game, but ironically, the time he pitched well was in Denver.

Maskell has a 4.58 ERA over his last 3 starts.

Top of the Seventh:
With 1 out, Jeff Austin and Eddie Thomas draw walks and PH Gordon Saunderson singles to load the bases up. But Dale Ainsworth flies out to shallow right and the runners hold... Dennis Webb grounds out to 2nd....

Bottom of the Seventh:
New Pitcher: Barry Chapman (26-R). Ivan Gallegas leads off with a double down the left field line. We walk Bob Cratchit intentionally to get to Tiny Tim, I mean Bob Pritchett to get to Mike Carpenter. But Carpenter walks, too, to load the bases up with no outs. Larry Sinchak strikes out. P Jerry Ivester grounds into a 6-2-3 double play!!! No runs!!

Top of the Eighth:

Wednesday, August 22, Year I

We are back home to play 8 games in a row and then we will finally get a much needed day off. First up on the home stand is the Milwaukee Brewers for 2 games. They just split 2 at home with Seattle. We are 4-3 against them on the season and won 3 of 4 the last time they were in the Skydome, June 14-17. Oh! Those idyll days of youth in fair Avalon in June! The Brewers are 4th in the Pacific Coast League in scoring with 4.2 runs per game (Portland is tied for 8th with 3.9). They are 9th in fewest runs allowed with 4.4 per game (Portland is still #1 with 3.2). Their pitchers lead the League in strikeouts and ours are last. But they have allowed the most home runs with 112 and we have allowed the second fewest with 79.

Milwaukee Brewers (63-62 .504 12 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (76-49 .608 in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIL: Charlie Gibson (29-R 4-9 4.24) vs. POR: Ron Wolf (27-R 12-9 2.98)

Gibson looks better to me than a 4.24 ERA, but we beat him the only time we faced him, scoring 5 runs on 11 hits in 6.2 IP.

Wolf has lost his last 4 starts.

Lineups: Pos Name (Age-Bats BA-AB-HR-RBI-OPS)
MILWAUKEE
1: 3B Bill Valdez (29-R .254-468-6-43-.675)

4: RF Larry Reichler (23-L .262-362-17-57-.805) Rookie #20 prospect
5: 2B Tom Harriger (24-R .321-467-10-68-.859) All-Star

8: SS Dave Lesley (26-R .252-290-3-33-.658)
9: P Ron Wolf (27-R .130-54-0-1-.315)

Game Start: 7:05 PM
Ballpark: The Skydome
Weather: 73 F, Clear Skies, with a 16 MPH wind blowing in from center.
Attendance: 20,825

Top of the First:
Bill Valdez gets a bunt hit and steals 2nd. Dave Mancini beats out an infield hit and HE steals 2nd. Jack Stull then plants one in the upper deck in left for a 3-run home run. 3 to 0, Brewers. Full count to Larry Reichler and he takes ball 4. I have not done the math, but Ron Wolf's ERA in the first inning must by 20+ and his ERA in the rest of the innings is probably under 1. Tom Harriger grounds into a 6-4-3 double play! Barry Anderson lines out to 3rd.

Bottom of the First:

Dale Ainsworth lines a hit to center to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Denis Webb lines a hit to right and Ainsworth tests RF Larry Reichler's arm, reported to be excellent....he is safe at 3rd! The throw was a good one. Perry Templet flies out to shallow left and Ainsworth has to hold. Has anyone ever had a sacrifice fly with no outs? Randy James takes a big swing and hits the ball about 6 inches...C Diego Cordova looks Ainsworth back to 3rd and fires to 2nd to get the force out there. 2 down. Jeff Schottler grounds out to short....prttz...

Top of the Third:
Bill Valdez leads off with a hit and goes to 3rd on a hit by Dave Mancini and scores on a fly ball by Jack Stull. 4 to 0, Brewers. THEY get a sac fly with no outs...

Bottom of the Third:
Dale Ainsworth leads off with a hit, gets bunted to 3rd by Dennis Webb and goes to 3rd on a ground out by Perry Templet and scores on a single by Randy James. 4 to 1, Brewers. Why we are bunting down 4 runs, is a good question....

Lost - 10 to 1

We had 6 hits and made no errors
Milwaukee had 14 hits and made 2 errors

I liked it better when we were making errors and winning games...
Ron Wolf has now lost 5 straight starts...

Ron Wolf (L 12-10) went 3.2 innings, allowed 8 runs, 9 hits, 1 home run, 2 walks and struck out 2. He threw a WP.
RHP Curt Riley went 5.1 innings, allowed 2 runs, 5 hits, 1 home run, no walks and struck out 5.

Charlie Gibson (W 5-9) went 9 innings (CG), gave us 1 run, 6 hits, no walks and struck out 4. He threw a WP. At bat, he had a hit and scored a run.

RF Dale Ainsworth had 2 hits and scored our only run. CF Perry Templet hit a double.

For the Brewers, the top 3 in their lineup went 11 for 14 with 7 runs scored and 9 RBI. Bill Valdez had 3 hits with a double, stole a base, scored 3 runs and had an RBI. LF Dave Mancini had 4 hits with a double, scored 2 runs and had 2 RBI. SS Jack Stull had 3 hits with a double and 2 home runs and had 6 RBI.

Thursday, August 23, Year I

RP Don Schmidt (25-R) has been activated from the Disabled List and RP Brian Hagans (25-R) has been sent to Vancouver (AAA). We decided to keep the old man, Curt Riley (35-R), instead.

1B Jeff Austin (29-R), last year's best hitter and this year's worst, has finally been officially benched...at least for the time being.

Milwaukee Brewers (64-62 .508 11 GB in 4th place in the PCL East) at
Portland Beavers (76-50 .603 in 1st place in the PCL West)

MIL: Dan Morrell (30-R 10-11 4.04) vs. POR: Dave Cole (25-R 2-2 4.98) Rookie

Morrell is their #2 starter. We are 1-1 against him, though he did not have a decision in either game. He pitched one great game and one not so great one.

Cole had a rough 1st inning in his last start, but then pitched very well. We need at least one of these pitchers who have been on the fringe for us to step up now that Horn is out.

Bottom of the First:
Dale Ainsworth fouls out to the catcher. Gordon Saunderson grounds out to the pitcher. Perry Templet takes a 3-2 pitch for ball 4. Randy James wallops a 3-1 pitch down the left field line for a double and Templet scores from 1st! 1 to 0, Beavers! Gary Long works the count full, but then grounds out to short.

Top of the Second:
Larry Reichler leads off with a hit and with 1 out, steals 2nd. Bob Coyne grounds a hit to right, but Reichler stops at 3rd. Gene Belt flies out to shallow right and Reichler holds. Don Duggan grounds out to 3rd! Now, THAT is showing some cojones!

Top of the Fourth:

With 1 out, Tom Harriger and Bob Coyne both single and Gene Belt follows with a double to left, scoring Harriger. Coyne tries to score from 1st, but is thrown out by Gordon Saunderson, 7-6-2! Tie game at 1 apiece. 2 outs and a runner on 3rd. We walk Don Duggan intentionally to get to the pitcher, Dan Morrell, who grounds out to 2nd.

The Denver Bears are here to play 3 games over the weekend. They just lost a pair of games in Oakland, but split two with us in Denver to begin the week. We are 7-2 against them on the season and swept them 3 games the last time they were in Portland, June 11-13, in the middle of an 8 game winning streak for us. Ah....Those were they days, my friend. We thought they'd never end... Denver is 2nd in the League in scoring with 4.6 runs per game (Portland is 9th with 3.9). They are 11th in fewest runs allowed with 4.8 per game (Portland is still #1, but up to 3.3). Thanks, Ron Wolf!

Adame is their #1 and is pretty impressive. ERA of 3.00 on the road. We beat him the only time we faced him, but he only gave us 1 earned run in 8 innings in Denver.

Martin was shelled in his last start for 7 runs in 4.2 innings.

Random Fact of Week: I ask you, does this Beaver team honestly look like a Championship team to you? It does not to me. Right now, we have 1 starting pitcher who is not chopped liver (Frank Martin). The other pitcher who has been decent for us at times this year and still has his arm attached to his body (Ron Wolf) has lost 5 starts in a row with a 5.79 ERA in those games. The offense, even though they have been relatively injury free, has been futile in the extreme with our best hitter from last season (Jeff Austin) losing 150 points off his OPS. In August, we have only 1 starter, ONE!!! with an OPS over .700 for the month: rookie CF Perry Templet. Even RF Dale Ainsworth, who has been our best player on offense so far this season is stinking it up in August with a .628 OPS. The Bullpen has been good most of the season, but that is the only area that we look like a quality team right now....
