Ah man. Bummer. Waaay before my time but as a Dodger fan I like their 50's history, and Oisk was a fun character and a great representative of that time. RIP

Ah, bummer. Rough day. (See also Herzog, Holtzman.)

How different would history have been if Erskine hadn't bounced a curve ball in the Brooklyn bullpen just when the call came for a reliever for Don Newcombe in the bottom of the 9th inning in Game 3 of the 1951 playoff? At the very least, Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca would probably not have become such good friends.

The last to get a featured chapter in Roger Kahn's The Boys of Summer, but not the final survivor of the 1955 "This IS Next Year" World Champion Brooklyn Dodgers. 19-year-old Sanford Koufax, now a spring-like 88 years old, is still with us.

(Sandy shares a birthday [Dec 30] with LeBron James, who also persists in persisting.)

Really beautiful tribute to Oisk, his raising his Down's Syndrome son (Jimmy), and his work for the Special Olympics (for over 50 years) at the start of today's Mets broadcast. Great job.

(Jimmy, who was born at a time when Down's kids were sent to mental hospitals and usually didn't survive to puberty, passed a few months ago at 63, which is impressive on its own.)
