YANKS and REDS in 1961 WORLD SERIES
REDS MEET YANKEES IN WORLD SERIES
The Yankees are taking on the Reds in the 1961 World Series. Normally the Yanks would be heavy favorites, but their pitching staff is racked with injuries. Veteran left hander Whitey Ford has been out most of the season, and it does not look like he will return until spring training also out of action is young Bill Stafford but manager Ralph Houk hopes to have him back in action soon. The Reds Jim Maloney came in and shut the Yankees down in Game 1 of the 1961 World Series Maloney got the win against the Yankees in Game 1. Last edited by ACESFAN 1; 10-01-2009 at 11:43 PM. |

Ahem. Since when did they play a WS game on a Friday in 1961?
Other than that I like it. And remember the series. Yanks in five. |

Ok it is a replay so what if it was on a Friday lol Yes the Yanks did take the "real" WS 4-1 and the Reds did not have much chance against the Yanks, I was surprised in my replay that the Reds fought that hard to force a game 7.

I wasn't trying to make a diddly correction. But I have a bit of nostalgia for that series format and taking the six transister radio to school to catch up during class breaks. All the series games were played during the day then. And the World Series was more important than the super bowl x10.
I still remember the headline during the off season "the Reds are dead." Gene Freese had broken his ankle (sliding into second iirc). Guess I'm just getting old. Wait up. Happens to the best of us. :-) |

Interesting. Harper played in 1961? At second base? No wonder he had 2 errors lol.

I looked up Harper he broke into the majors 1962. So he must have been a minor leaguer that had been called by the computer. During "my" WS I managed the Yankees and the computer ran the Reds.

Heh, I don't know why I thought second base when you didn't mention it. Actually had totally forgotten where Freese played, it's been a while lol, but I checked and he played third. Very interesting that you replayed the 1961 season and it still ended up Yanks against Reds. Shows how accurate the game is in this case. I usually don't get the same pennant winners.

For some reason the computer had Freese playiny 2B and I don't remember who was playing 3B(yes I know who was on first lol). I should have started my 60's replay with 1960 but I started with 61 and getting ready to start 1962, see my thread 1962 season. Will be interesting to see if NY and SF meet in the series. I am using free agents(I know that there were no free agents in that era) just to see what if.
Oh, one other thing about Freese. I watched him and his brother play in the PCL back in the day. His brother George was an infielder with the LA Angels in 1956 when they were the Cubs affilate in the PCL and Gene I cannot remember which team he played for at that time. I had already looked at your other thread. Mays went to the Mets? Wow. That just definitely eliminated SF. Especially if Koufax stays healthy all season. But Drysdale went elsewhere so he'll need to be replaced. I'm from LA and lived through those times until going in the army in 1966. From reading your previous post looks like you did too.
I think with free agents it's a matter of preference. I play with financials off. Have requested for XI real financials for the reserve clause era but not holding my breath. It's not a big deal since they rarely affected anything. |

Drysdale going to the braves prior to 1962 is heresy lol. I'll be looking at your 62 season. I think it would be funny if we went to the same hs about the same time.

Ok, I'll be keeping an eye on 1962.
And yes, I can imagine a Yankee outfield with Mantle and Mays. I can imagine the fight to see who plays center lol. I'd pick Mays but to each his own. |

Yeah but Willie Mays wasnt' established like Joe. And Mantle at ss? He would have set hr records for that position that would never be broken. No matter how hard I try I can't picture the Mick having a career at ss.
